Al-Shabab fighters have reportedly vacated their strongholds in Mogadishu ahead of a government offensive.According to sources, the group has been pulling out all its weapons and vehicles from its main stronghold ever since they heard the reports of an imminent government attack.

Other reports also suggested that other Al-Shabab strongholds, including the Daynile district, have witnessed large movements of military personnel and equipment. It is unclear if this is a military tactic that Al-Shabab is employing. In addition, five people were killed and dozens of others injured on Sunday in shelling that rocked parts of the Somali capital Mogadishu, medics and witnesses said...

A crucial witness in an FBI probe that led to terrorism charges against two Greater Boston men was rewarded for his cooperation yesterday with a sentence of probation for his own crime.

Bilaal McCloud, 54, of Roxbury, who began cooperating with the FBI in 2005 after he was indicted on charges of being a felon in possession of a semiautomatic pistol and ammunition, told a federal judge, “I felt it was my duty to assist in that way.’’

During the sentencing hearing in US District Court in Boston, prosecutors said McCloud “provided singular and very important information’’ in a significant case, but did not publicly disclose which case it was.

Two people familiar with the inquiry that led to the terrorism indictment in November of Tarek Mehanna, 27, of Sudbury, and Ahmad Abousamra, 28, a fugitive formerly of Mansfield, said McCloud is one of the unnamed cooperating witnesses in that case.[...]

McCloud converted to Islam while in state prison and befriended Mehanna and Abousamra while attending mosques in Greater Boston, according to one of the people familiar with the investigation.

Mehanna is facing a charge of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. Authorities allege he conspired with Ahmad Abousamra and others in the plot, Loucks said in a news conference today at his office in Boston.

The al Qaeda supporter and blogger arrested by the FBI earlier this week has been identified as Tarek Mehanna. Mehanna was arrested as he attempted to leave the country on charges that he had lied to the FBI about prior knowledge of another Muslim blogger's, Daniel "Al-Jughaifi" Maldanado, plans to travel from Egypt to Somalia to join the jihad. Maldanado is now in federal prison after being convicted of receiving specialized weapons training from an al Qaeda linked group in Somalia.

Iraqi and US forces dealt al Qaeda in Iraq a major blow last week during a raid in Mosul that killed the terror group's top facilitator, who was based out of Syria.

The joint US and Iraqi special operations team killed Abu Khalaf, al Qaeda in Iraq's senior most foreign fighter facilitator, during an operation on Jan. 22. Khalaf was killed after he "attacked a security-team member participating in a warranted operation," a US Forces- Iraq press release stated.

The US military said Khalaf's identity was confirmed using "multiple sources, including fingerprint matches."

Khalaf, whose real name is Sa'ad Uwayyid 'Ubayd Mu'jil al Shammari, was placed on the US Treasury Department's terrorist sanctions list in May 2009 and was identified as al Qaeda in Iraq's top facilitator, who operated from Syria. more

A source close to the Obama administration said the Yemenis had agreed in principle to the establishment of a Reintegration and Risk Reduction Initiative, which would be internationally funded and monitored.

Aimed at steering detainees back into society, it would be modeled on previous efforts in Northern Ireland, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

The project has support from within the US state department and is gaining ground among White House advisers, said the source....

Kenya paid more than $500,000 to deport controversial Jamaican Muslim preacher Abdullah al-Faisal, according to Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang.

He was finally expelled last week on a chartered jet, after Kenya had spent three weeks trying to deport him.

Meanwhile, two immigration officials have been suspended for letting Faisal into the country in the first place.

The cleric spent four years in a UK jail for soliciting the murder of Jews and Hindus.

The extra security check comes on top of a metal detector placed outside the doorway of the Manhattan courtroom where Aafia Siddiqui is on trial for attempted murder.

Her defense team said Thursday the precautions are depriving her of a fair trial.

"The suggestion is that the gallery may be a threat," said Charles Swift.

Grilling spectators, often in front of jurors waiting to get into the courtroom, "is highly prejudicial," Swift told Federal Judge Richard Berman.

WASHINGTON -- The United States has released a long-secret list of 645 detainees held at a military base in Afghanistan, providing the information as part of a lawsuit seeking details of the government's treatment of terror suspects.

The list was just a small part of roughly 2,000 pages of documents released by the government Friday night related to various lawsuits seeking government records about detainees.

The identities of the detainees at Bagram Air Base had been sought by the American Civil Liberties Union.

ACLU lawyer Melissa Goodman said the government also should provide details of how the inmates were captured and why they are being held.

COPENHAGEN (AP) - Prosecutors filed a preliminary charge of terrorism Monday against a Somali man accused of trying to kill a Danish cartoonist who caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.

The man had faced a preliminary charge of attempted murder for breaking into Kurt Westergaard's home in Aarhus, in western Denmark, Jan. 1 armed with a knife and an ax.

Prosecutor Marian Thomsen said investigators changed the preliminary charge to terrorism, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, after questioning the suspect over the weekend for the first time since his arrest.

Westergaard, 74, locked himself in a safe room and was not injured. The suspect was shot by police in the hand and knee, but was not seriously injured and is being held in jail pending the outcome of the investigation.

A radical Jamaican-born Muslim cleric who led a British mosque attended by convicted terrorists was flown back to Kenya on Sunday after an attempt to deport him failed, officials said.

Nigerian authorities refused to grant a transit visa for Sheik Abdullah el-Faisal and instead sent him back to Kenya early Sunday, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Al-Amin Kimathi, head coordinator for the Muslim Human Rights Forum, said el-Faisal was now being held in a Nairobi prison. He said el-Faisal had been invited to Kenya by Muslim youths to give lectures[...]

El-Faisal served four years in Britain for inciting murder and stirring racial hatred by urging followers to kill Americans, Hindus and Jews. Britain deported him to Jamaica in 2007.

At a news conference Sunday, Kimathi made a call and put on speaker phone a man who identified himself to journalists as el-Faisal.

He said he was being held at a prison in Nairobi's industrial area and described the conditions as "horrible."

It was not possible to independently verify the claim.

MOGADISHU, Jan 10 (Reuters) - A pro-government militia in Somalia executed a commander from the al Shabaab rebel group in public on Sunday, ramping up the stakes in battles for central regions of the failed Horn of Africa state.

The Ahlu Sunna Waljamaca militia, which is aligned with Somalia's weak Western-backed government, has been fighting al Shabaab insurgents in central Galagadud region. The United States says al Shabaab is al Qaeda's proxy in the country.

Ahlu Sunna's spokesman said it had captured many rebels during clashes last week around Galgadud's capital Dusamareb, including the commander who was sentenced to die by firing squad after he refused to renounce al Shabaab's hardline ideology.

A federal judge has tossed out most of the government's evidence against a tarrorism detainee on grounds his confessions were coerced, allegedly by U.S. forces, before he became a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay.

In a ruling this week, U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan also said the government failed to establish that 23 statements the detainee made to interrogators at Guantanamo Bay were untainted by the earlier coerced statements made while he was held under harsh conditions in Afghanistan.

Wow, how stupid does this administration think we are???

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A man tried to board a commercial airliner in Mogadishu last month carrying powdered chemicals, liquid and a syringe that could have caused an explosion in a case bearing chilling similarities to the terrorist plot to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner, officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday[...]

A Nairobi-based diplomat said the incident in Somalia is similar to the attempted attack on the Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day in that the Somali man had a syringe, a bag of powdered chemicals and liquid — tools similar to those used in the Detroit attack. The diplomat spoke on condition he not be identified because he isn't authorized to release the information.

(Detroit, Michigan) Curious news here. A second Nigerian man, without luggage, on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam has been arrested on arrival today in Detroit. Today's flight -- NW253 -- took the same route as Friday's flight targeted by Abdulmutallab.

The 30-something Nigerian locked himself in the bathroom. Cabin crew members knocked down the door and pulled him out. He was reportedly "irate and verbally aggressive." After being subdued, he was taken into custody.

No explosives were found and the FBI gave an all clear after a few hours. Officials downplayed the whole episode as a sick passenger who was disruptive. (More ....)

(Detroit, Michigan) On a Northwest Airlines flight from Nigeria today, passenger Abdul Mudallad claimed he was acting on orders from al-Qaeda when he tried to blow up the plane.

Passengers reportedly snuffed Mudallad's plans and the Airbus 330 landed safely at 11:51 AM EST. The flight plan was Nigeria to Detroit via Amsterdam.

Reportedly, the wannabe terrorist was carrying a mix of powder and liquid which somehow failed to explode when he tried to detonate.

Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates, said the incident occurred during the plane's descent. Jafri said he was seated three rows behind the passenger and said he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."

"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," he said.

The FBI, Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration and the White House have all become involved with the story. Inquiries are being directed to the FBI. (More ...)

A commander in al Qaeda's military organization was among 17 Islamist extremists killed during today's strikes in the Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan in Pakistan.

Zuhaib al Zahibi, a commander in al Qaeda's Shadow Army, or the Lashkar al Zil, was among seven Arab "foreigners" and nine Taliban fighters killed in one of two airstrikes in the Datta Khel region in North Waziristan, a senior US military intelligence official told The Long War Journal. Two other Taliban fighters were also killed in an earlier, separate strike in the Datta Khel region.

Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.), ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, says the Obama administration is stalling in providing information to the leaders of the House and Senate and the congressional intelligence committees on the multiple murders allegedly committed by a radical Muslim Army officer at Fort Hood more than a month ago.

So far, the committee chairman and congressional leaders have received no detailed, substantive briefing on the event and what is known about its perpetrator.

“You know, they’re playing out the string,” Hoekstra said Thursday. “We’re going home next week, (and) they will have effectively made it through three months[weeks...ed] with giving no substantive briefings on Fort Hood.”

(Detroit, Michigan) A physical education teacher at A.L. Holmes Elementary School, Garry Laverne Porter (aka Mujahid), was arrested by the FBI in this week's roundup of Islamist radicals. Porter is charged with conspiracy to commit federal crimes and possession of firearms or ammunition by a convicted felon.

He was one of eight men taken into custody Wednesday as part of a group called Ummah which aims to establish a separate Islamic nation within the United States.

Having convicted felons teaching children in Michigan is reportedly not uncommon. However, it's unknown how many radical Islamists teach in Michigan. (More ...)

(New York City) According to the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, a Queens cab driver originally from India, 45-year-old Patrick Nayyar (pic), was indicted yesterday on charges of attempting to provide material support to Hezbollah, the Shi'ite Iranian-backed U.S.-designated terrorist group based in Lebanon.

Another man whose whereabouts are unknown, 43-year-old Conrad Mulholland, was indicted on the same charges. Mulholland is believed to be in England.

According to the indictment, the men agreed to sell weapons, ammunition, vehicles, bullet-resistant vests and night vision goggles to an FBI informant they believed was a member of Hezbollah.

Nayyar appeared in Manhattan federal court and pleaded not guilty to a five-count indictment that included conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization as well as illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He faces up to 80 years in prison on a combined total of the maximum of each of the five charges.

"The government is going to have real difficulty demonstrating any terrorist links," said Nayyar's lawyer, Martin Schmukler, who called the terrorism charges "overblown" and disputed a claim by authorities that his client was an illegal immigrant.

Nayyar was arrested on September 24 at his home in New York on separate firearms charges that were dropped. U.S. authorities said an alleged accomplice, British citizen Conrad Stanisclaus Mulholland remains at large in Britain, but Schmukler said he is being detained there.

Nayyar will be detained pending trial. A court appearance before a U.S. Magistrate is scheduled for November 3.

(Munich, Germany) Heightened security at the Oktoberfest includes bag checks, increased video surveillance, establishment of a temporary no-fly zone over the grounds and hundreds of additional police officers.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann said the increased security is precautionary and not in response to a specific threat which is odd since recent videos released by the Taliban and al-Qaeda have specifically threatened Munich.

The videos threatened Germans with terrorist attacks unless they elected a government on Sunday that would withdraw the nation’s troops from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile Munich police announced on Monday morning that they had arrested two suspected Islamists in connection with the videos. Both suspects allegedly had contact with al Qaida member Bekkay Harrach – who threatened Germany in one of the videos, police said.

The two men, who come from the Middle East, will be held until after the festival ends, they said.

Note that an estimated 6 million beer-lovers are expected to attend the festival. Since the terrorists want to kill as many people as possible, don't be surprised if an ugly situation develops in Munich between now and Sunday (10/4) when the Oktoberfest ends.

(White Plains, New York) Last May, four men were arrested by terrorism task force members for allegedly plotting to blow up Jewish centers in the Bronx. The four suspects were identified as James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen. They face charges of conspiring and attempting to use weapons of mass destruction.

Defense attorneys are claiming that the men were entrapped by an FBI informant who bribed them with fried chicken to carry out terrorist bombings. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Leibowitz said he would check the fried chicken angle.

The four men are scheduled to stand trial on June 14, 2010.

INDONESIAN authorities are expected to reveal this morning that the man gunned down in a counter-terrorism raid over the weekend was Ibrahim, a florist who worked at the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels.

Ibrahim was a key player in the terrorist cell that orchestrated twin suicide bombings at the hotels, providing inside information and helping smuggle in the explosives that killed seven bystanders, including three Australians.

The 17-hour siege in Temanggung, Central Java, on Friday and Saturday was originally believed to have led to the slaying of Noordin Mohammed Top, the fugitive terrorist mastermind who has been on the run for more than six years.

Those hopes were dashed once the body was hauled from an isolated farmhouse and family members of the Malaysian-born terrorist were shown photographs of the body and said it wasn't him.

Update on: German Terrorism Trial

Apparently the suspects became tired of the trial proceedings and decided to confess:

Berlin - The lead suspect in one of Germany's largest terrorism trials since the 1970s told a court Monday of how he had travelled[sp] to Pakistan for training and volunteered to attack US interests in Europe. Fritz Gelowicz, 29, a German-born convert to Islam, told the court in Dusseldorf he was the leader of the so-called Sauerland Group, before giving an extensive confession as part of a sentence-reducing deal with prosecutors.

"The main target was to be American soldiers in Germany," Gelowicz said, adding that the group also planned to attack a politically sensitive US target, such as a consulate.

Thirdly, Gelowicz said the alleged terrorists wanted to send "a final warning to the German population," to force Bundeswehr troops to withdraw from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

"In al-Qaeda there were no Europeans that could have carried out attacks in Europe. We declared ourselves ready, because there was no- one else," Gelowicz added.

The Sauerland Group, consisting of Gelowicz, Daniel Schneider, Adem Yilmaz and Attila Selek, are accused of planning attacks on US military bases in 2007.

The four made a dramatic decision in June to give extensive confessions in return for reduced sentences, and prosecutors have taken the testimonies, which run to some 1,200 pages, over the past four weeks.

The case is expected to yield unprecedented details of militant Islamist training and recruitment methods in Pakistan.
