A More Aggressive Approach to Counter Cyber Terror?
Bumped

[**Bumped by SH because important Scroll down for newer]

At last! The counter cyber terror pendulum stops and pauses. Will it swing toward a more equitable and effective strategy for dealing with Online Jihad?

Foreign Policy:
A great paradox of the conflict with al Qaeda is that the terrorists, largely driven by 14th century Islamist ideology, make such skillful use of 21st century information technology. Whether to tell their story of a sacred mission to reduce the shadow cast by American power over the Muslim world, to motivate recruits to join the jihad, or to provide a form of "distance learning" in terrorist tradecraft...

..The Boston bombing once again reminded the world of the benefits al Qaeda reaps from cyberspace, as it appears that the Tsarnaev brothers were radicalized and trained via jihadist websites. In this they were hardly alone. The London bombings in 2005 (which killed 52), the fizzled Glasgow Airport attack in 2007, the foiled plot against Fort Dix in 2007, Nidal Hasan's rampage at Fort Hood in 2009 (which killed 13), and the failed attempt to bring down a Northwest Airlines plane that same year all featured terrorists who made extensive use of online motivational and training materials.

The piece goes on to outline the classic conflict in dealing with the Online Jihad, how to balance the competing interests of intelligence gathering or spying, efforts to counter the messaging with more messaging and also direct engagement like take downs and interference with al-Qaeda and other terrorists' propaganda online.

We at Jawa Report have long been an advocate of strong action in the direct engagement camp. Through our actions we've taken down thousands of Youtube videos and hundreds of websites. While also being careful to save and preserve information and passing it along to the appropriate authorities when required.

A few our our cases have resulted in press, not to mention convictions and incarcerations of real cyber terrorists. All of which are too extensive to list here in this post. Of course we had the help of our wonderful reader activists as well as those in LE who do the real heavy lifting in getting these folks prosecuted and sentenced.

Takedowns can actually yield valuable intelligence as well, in the aftermath of an action the Jihadis will take steps that can be tracked and watched as well. Sometimes you breed a more resistant pest. Other times a slip up getting a new site running yields open directories full of data or maybe a DNS registration that was not privacy protected. Sometimes the target gets so angry they feel the needs to express themselves on your platform. Um yeah.... PWNED.

But we have to admit the last few years have been a slog. Here's counter terror expert Aaron Weisburd expressing his feelings at the current state of Counter Cyber Jihad.

aaronhopeless.JPG

The heydays of rampant take downs and Youtube Smackdown have long since passed in favor of the lets just watch method. While all the Jawas, Internet Haganah and other activists have our differences here are a few points I think we all feel basically the same about.

The goal is not to totally eliminate Terrorist Propaganda nor should it be. Never mind that its not possible, the existence of a certain areas that the more dedicated cats can be herded into is not a problem really. These high level forums for heavy hitters yield a lot of intelligence. Even then I'd still throw a wrench it it every now and then just to keep the level nagging discomfort at an appropriate level.

But then again neither should al-Qaeda and the terrorists be allowed free run.

If intelligence gleaned from cyberspace had given the counterterrorist coalition anything like the "information edge" enjoyed by the Allies against the Axis powers in World War II, the age of terror would already be over.
Exacly! Too much watch and not enough act creates new terrorists faster than they can be tracked. Much faster. The events in Boston demonstrate this.

A more comprehensive strategy is needed as the article suggests.

Several years ago, I met with senior intelligence officials to pitch the case for a New Bletchley Park. No dice. They were already doing just fine, I was told. I then took the matter up inside the Pentagon, finally reaching a then-serving member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was very supportive of the concept, and expressed concern that jihadists were being "given a free ride in cyberspace." But he felt that the matter had to be carried forward by...the intelligence community. No joy. Fast forward to the present: The old three-prong strategy of website-based observation, ideological disputation, and selected site disruption continues, despite the fact that al Qaeda still enjoys that virtual free ride.
Speaking of Boston and Samir Khan's Inspire magazine. Did you know that Jawa Report took down Samir Khan's blog a number of times.

We were one of the first to note that Samir was dangerous and was providing what we considered material supports for al-Qaeda's propaganda operation online. Through dissemination, translation and even his own propaganda Samir's goal was to support and aid al-Qaeda in its war against America.

Because see we really don't need a New Bletchley Park all we need is for US TO CARE. And much like if you see a Jihadi walking down the street with a bomb and an AK. If you see something say something.

Participate as a nation and we along with the appropriate authorities can help thwart al-Qaeda's goals and slow the radicalization of new and dangerous Jihadis. We can make them feel less safe to spread their evil online.

Can it prevent the next attack? No strategy is perfect but we know the results of doing nothing. And we can start right now.

Samir Kahn's Inpsire magazine that Dzhokhar and TamerlanTsarnaev used to murder and maim Americans at the Boston Marathon is still online.

Its being spread and discussed right now at the Minbar Al-Tawhid Wal-Jihad website and their Facebook page.

The site is hosted in NJ.

http://www.tawhed.ws/

MTJ is hosted by Interserver.net, which according to its website is a New Jersey company located at 110 Meadowlands Parkway, Suite 100, Secaucus, NJ 07094. The toll-free office number is 1-877-566-8398, and regular office number 1-201-605-1440.

We're sure the site is being watched.

The question I guess is, Do you believe that the authorities, by watching alone, can identify and stop every potential terrorist that might be radicalized by information being spread via the website and Facebook?

If your answer is no then its time to take action. if not against the forum itself then against its Facebook and Youtube presence. Cecause the goal is not 100% elimination of the Cyber Jihad, it the bunt its effectiveness, to slow its spread and create a more hostile and less welcoming environment to the aspiring new Jihadis and terrorist propagandists.

Because sitting around and watching will seem of little benefit the next time we see our countrymen and women laying in the streets dead or maimed by another Jihadi who was incubated online.

Fatwa Published 4/21/2013: Sure Akhi, It's OK To Distribute Bomb Making Instructions Via Jihadi Forums
Website Hosted By NJ Company

I guess Samir Khan's "How to make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom" isn't reaching enough jihadis?

Via MEMRI

On April 21, 2013, the Salafi-jihadi website Minbar Al-Tawhid Wal-Jihad (MTJ) posted a fatwa encouraging the dissemination on jihadi forums of content relating to the manufacture of explosives.

The fatwa, by Sheikh Abu Mundhir Al-Shinqiti, was issued in response to a query by reader "'Omar Al-Dalimi" about the home manufacture of explosives. Claiming to be a member of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), Al-Dalimi asked if he was permitted to publish via "the brothers' forums," that is, jihadi forums, some exclusive content in his possession pertaining to the manufacture of explosives.

Al-Dalimi said that his content was sought after by other forum members for the purpose of jihad, but that he was concerned that if such content was posted openly on jihadi forums, other undesirable members, who he says are Shi'ites, could also access it and benefit from it. Al-Shinqiti responded by encouraging Al-Dalimi to disseminate his content freely over jihadi forums so that the "mujahideen and their supporters everywhere can benefit from it."

It is noteworthy that the MTJ is hosted by Interserver.net, which according to its website is a New Jersey company located at 110 Meadowlands Parkway, Suite 100, Secaucus, NJ 07094. The toll-free office number is 1-877-566-8398, and regular office number 1-201-605-1440.

Following is Al-Dalimi's question, followed by Al-Shinqiti's answer:

Six days after the Boston Marathon Bombing and this is published on a website hosted by a US company.

Surprising? Nope, not at all.

Dagestan: Mujahideen Of The Caucases Emirate: We Weren't Behind #BostonBombing
We Don't Kill Innocents?

Caucases Mouthpiece, Kavkaz Center, deflecting this by showing image of Hamas

A jihadi forum carried this:

New statement from Wilayah Dagestan of the Caucasus Emirate: “In Relation to Events in Boston”

After the events in Boston, the US, information has been distributed in the press saying that one of the Tsarnaev brothers spent 6 months in Dagestan in 2012. On this basis, there are speculative assumptions that he may have been associated with the Mujahideen of the Caucasus Emirate, in particular with the Mujahideen of Dagestan.

The Command of the Province of Dagestan indicates in this regard that the Caucasian Mujahideen are not fighting against the United States of America[they have fought in other theaters such as Afghanistan, against Americans..ed]. We are at war with Russia, which is not only responsible for the occupation of the Caucasus, but also for heinous crimes against Muslims.

Also, remember that even in respect to the enemy state of Russia, which is fighting the Caucasus Emirate, there is an order by the Emir Dokku Umarov, which prohibits strikes on civilian targets.[See video below..ed]

In this regard, the Command of the Mujahideen of the Province of Dagestan urges the media, primarily the American, to halt speculations and promotion of Russian propaganda.

If the US government is really interested in establishing the true organizers of Boston bombings, and not in complicity with the Russian show, it should focus on the involvement of Russian security services in the events.

Command of the Mujahideen of the Caucasus Emirate Province of Dagestan

As an example, the families of these children would heartily disagree with his statement about strikes against civilians. Dr Zuhdi Jasser, whom I just did a previous post on, narrates this:

No surprise here, Anon sided with Hamas during the IDF''s Pillar of Defense.

[H]ackers around the world are plotting to strike Israel’s online presence in a coordinated cyber-attack later this week. The effort, known as “OpIsrael,” which is being organized by hacktivist group Anonymous, aims to target the 100 largest websites in the country, especially those of banks, credit card companies, and communications firms.

The attack is scheduled to take place Sunday, April 7. That evening, Israel begins to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.

According to “Mauritania Attacker,” who leads a group of hackers called AnonGhost, “the hacking teams have decided to unite against Israel as one entity, and Israel should be getting prepared to be ‘erased’ from the Internet.”

“Its gonna be the biggest ever operation launched against any country, Its gonna be Huge [sic]!” said Mauritania Attacker in an interview to The Hackers Post.

Sunday Sermon For Wannabe Splodeys On A Jihadi Forum

Just another recruiting day for suckers on Ansar al-Mujahideen forum:

Words of advice to the brethren leaving for Jihād
by:martyred brother Sayyid ( rahimahullah.)

Know, may Allāh bless you and make you firm on the most trust worthy handhold, and on this religion, and may Allāh make knowledge easy for you, that if this path has been chosen by you as your way of life, if you have made the decision to walk this noble path, that is the path of Hijrah and Jihād, know that you have embraced a life of hardship and trials, a life of tears and sweat, a life of fear and sadness, a life also if thought about in depth, or if thought about its reality and what you are gaining by embracing this life, which Allāh opens on his truthful slave, it contains the inner happiness and peace, you will never loose, you will get the honor in this world and what Allāh has saved for you in the next is not known except to the Rabb who has bought from you, your wealth and soul.[...]

The points I wanted you to be aware of are:-

The pep talk goes on and on including a mention of 'democracy' equating it to devil worshiping.[Arab Spring reference]. Same ole 72 virgins pep talk with a sprinkling of young boys for their pleasure.
In the Gardens of delight (Paradise). (They will be) on thrones woven with gold and precious stones, Reclining thereon, face to face. They will be served by immortal boys, With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine
Wherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.
And fruit; that they may choose. And the flesh of fowls that they desire.
And (there will be) Houris (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for the pious),Like unto preserved pearls. A reward for what they used to do.
Boy are they ever gonna be surprised like the "Lion of Islam" was when he saw his 'Houris':

Ha-Ha! Reuters Editor Indicted for Helping Cyber Terrorists

mathew-keys-reuters-twitter-indictment.JPG

The fact that a Reuters journalist has terrorist sympathies? Doesn't surprise me a bit.

The fact that the federal government indicted him? That's the shocking part.

You'll notice that the indictment cites Keys as a former employee at a Sacramento TV station. After he left, he got a gig at Reuters. Where, as of this writing, he still has a gig.

Apparently Reuters has no problem employing this guy:

A former web producer for a Tribune Company-owned television station in Sacramento, Calif., was charged today in an indictment for allegedly conspiring with members of the hacker group “Anonymous” to hack into and alter a Tribune Company website, the Justice Department announced.

Matthew Keys, 26, of Secaucus, N.J., was charged in the Eastern District of California with one count each of conspiracy to transmit information to damage a protected computer, transmitting information to damage a protected computer and attempted transmission of information to damage a protected computer.

Keys was employed by Sacramento-based television station KTXL FOX 40, as its web producer, but was terminated in late October 2010.

The three-count indictment alleges that in December 2010 Keys provided members of the hacker group Anonymous with log-in credentials for a computer server belonging to KTXL FOX 40’s corporate parent, the Tribune Company. According to the indictment, Keys identified himself on an Internet chat forum as a former Tribune Company employee and provided members of Anonymous with a login and password to the Tribune Company server. After providing log-in credentials, Keys allegedly encouraged the Anonymous members to disrupt the website. According to the indictment, at least one of the computer hackers used the credentials provided by Keys to log into the Tribune Company server, and ultimately that hacker made changes to the web version of a Los Angeles Times news feature.

The indictment further alleges that Keys had a conversation with the hacker who claimed credit for the defacement of the Los Angeles Times website. The hacker allegedly told Keys that Tribune Company system administrators had thwarted his efforts and locked him out. Keys allegedly attempted to regain access for that hacker, and when he learned that the hacker had made changes to a Los Angeles Times page, Keys responded, “nice.”

If convicted, Keys faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000 for each count. The indictment also contains a notice of forfeiture provision for property traceable to the offense.

The charges contained in the indictment are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

This case was investigated by the Sacramento and Los Angeles Field Offices of the FBI. The case is being prosecuted by the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.
For his part, Keys hasn't said a thing on his Twitter account about being indicted. Which I guess is the smart move and the one most lawyers will recommend.

But the real funny part here? So, Keys helps the Anonymous thugs hack some websites. And what does he get in return for his help? They out him:

keys-anonymous-outs.JPG

Which just makes this whole thing all the more funny.

Why Taking Out Jihadi Twitter Accounts is Good for Intel

One of the most important articles written on strategies for dealing with terrorists online. Ever. Why? Because it adds data to what we've intuitively for some time.

The main takeaway:

All of this illustrates an important but oft overlooked point: Strategy doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. Total suppression of extremists on the Internet would cost us real intelligence, but that isn't a reason to just let them do whatever they want. By making their lives difficult, we make ours easier in ways large and small.
Berger is make the same basic argument that I've been making for .... years and years now. Knocking jihadis off the web has a funneling affect: the less committed tend to fall off the radar because of the hassle, but the more committed are likely take the time and effort to find a new outlet.

Often the problem isn't that we don't have enough data, it's that we have too much data and not enough eyeballs to analyze it. I won't belabor the point as it is self explanatory.

Moreover, when a Twitter account or a website goes down we don't lose all the data from the previous iteration. It's called "backing up the website", and if that seems too complicated than you shouldn't be in the business in the first place.

Update: Kenya Won't Negotiate With These Bitches

First, Al Shabaab (aka the African Taliban) tweet a link to the download:

Next, it appears on JihadTube:

Then the threats:

Twitter yawns over TOS violation as they did when Al Shabaab, aka @HSMPress, threatened to kill French hostage Denis Allex if France attempted to rescue him. He died and Al Shabaab tweeted several images of a French commando who was killed in the failed hostage rescue operation.

I suppose we should start calling Twitter JihadTweet or JihadTwitter or TwitterJihad, much like we call Google's YouTube JihadTube.

Update: Kenya officials respond to the above threat We will not bargain with al-Shabaab

* Says government "cannot negotiate with terrorists"
* Nairobi says hostages are non-combatants, not POWs
"not POW's", exactly.

Update: If you so choose, tweet this article to @hrw and/or contact them here and ask why the silence on these hostages and the death threat. If Jews were involved it would be all over the news.

Facebook Helping Designated Terrorists Linked to al Qaeda

This week the Jabhat al-Nusra group in Syria was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the US State Department. The designated makes it illegal for US companies to provide services, even free ones, to such terrorist organizations.

So, naturally, they have an official page on Facebook.

jabhat-al-nusra-facebook.jpg

The page even features one member of the group murdering captured Assad soldiers. Or at least, I think that's what is going on from the reactions in the comments to the photo.

Just to emphasize: the group itself is so proud of the murders, that they post images of themselves committing them.

jabhat-al-nusra-murders-facebook.jpg

The page also features a video biography of Osama bin Laden and a tribute to 9/11, just in case you didn't know where they stood on the subject.

I'm just throwing this out there. Just in case any one in the FBI, Treasury, or State care.

Palestinians Fight Over Dead Baby

You know I really hate how the bodies of children are used as fodder for propaganda in the Middle East. What comes to mind for me recently is the situation in Syria where its a regular staple of reports coming out of that conflict.

The only thing worse than the conflict itself is the rush to use the suffering to advance a cause, especially when that takes the form of dead baby porn. That there are those on any side that see the death of a child as an asset to be used to advance a cause.

But there is an argument that the unvarnished truth should get out, I guess I can't go against that. So watching network coverage over the weekend of the Gaza conflict I was struck by the two Palestinians fighting over who gets to carry the dead baby past the cameras.

MEMRI's series of articles on Hizbullah's Facebook activity and its multiple Facebook pages was followed by Facebook's August 2012 removal of Hizbullah and Al-Manar pages; MEMRI's activity against Hizbullah's social media activities has been reported by the Lebanese media.

Following this removal of the previous Hizbullah and Al-Manar TV Facebook pages, and after vowing to return to Facebook, Hizbullah created two new Facebook pages for its Al-Manar TV, as MEMRI reported on August 22, 2012.

Last night, Facebook removed these two new Hizbullah Al-Manar TV pages, as well as a page belonging to Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah. This latter page, while it was created in October 2011, has never been shut down; its removal is a new move for Facebook.[More...]

Another Online Jihadi
Another Attempted Bombing

Fortunately for us most online Jihadis are few cards short of a full deck.

A Middle Eastern man tried to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in Lower Manhattan this morning, law-enforcement sources told the Post.

FB profile pic eta.jpg

The terrorist parked a van filled with what he thought were explosives outside of the Liberty Street building, sources said, then tried to set them off using a cell phone detonator.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was provided the explosives from an undercover FBI agent that he met on the Internet and believed to be an accomplice, the sources said.

The suspect raised red flags after posting about Jihad online, they said.

The agent made contact with the jihadist about three months ago. The suspect told him that he wanted to blow up the bank, the sources said.

It will be interesting to see who this actually was.

Update by SH: Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis is the perps name

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis , 21, was arrested this morning in downtown Manhattan after he allegedly attempted to detonate what he believed to be a 1,000-pound bomb at the New York Federal Reserve Bank on Liberty Street in lower Manhattan's financial district[...]

According to the criminal complaint filed today in the Eastern District of New York, defendant Nafis, a Bangladeshi national, traveled to the United States in January 2012 for the purpose of conducting a terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Nafis, who reported having overseas connections to al-Qaeda, attempted to recruit individuals to form a terrorist cell inside the United States. Nafis also actively sought out al-Qaeda contacts within the United States to assist him in carrying out an attack. Unbeknownst to Nafis, one of the individuals he attempted to recruit was actually a source for the FBI.

Update by Howie: The image is of one Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis from Google +

Also I see a Yfrog account here linked to this twitter feed. Which then links to a dead Facebook account.

I mean how many Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis can there be?

The complaint is here(pdf). Of interest to Jawa Report readers is the fact that he was an avid fan of Samir Khan's Inspire magazine. Also that the main channel of communication he used was Facebook.

From the complaint.

During that meeting, which was consensually recorded, NAFIS
told the UC, in sum and substance, that he wished to launch a terrorist
attack against the United States. NAFIS further told the UC, in sum
and substance, that he was collaborating with two other individuals
-- “Yaqueen” (the CO-CONSPIRATOR) and the CHS -- and that those
individuals also wanted to participate in the attack. NAFIS stated,
“We are ready for action.” NAFIS then said, in sum and substance,
that he, “Yaqueen” and the CHS “don’t care anything about our work.
We just want to meet our lord as soon as we can.” NAFIS continued:
What I really mean, is that I don’t want
something that’s like, small. I just want
something big. Something very big. Very very
very very big, that will shake the whole
country, that will make America, not one step
ahead, change of policy, and make one step
ahead, for the Muslims . . . that will make us
one step closer to run the whole
world . . . .

MEMRI: Testing YouTube's 'Promotes Terrorism' Flagging Feature For Videos Of Osama Bin Laden, 9/11, Al-Qaeda – The Results: 58 Of 100 Remain Active

Certainly no surprise for the Jawa Report, we didn't make the category JihadTube for nothing. We are constantly frustrated that Google's YouTube doesn't do jack sh*t about terrorist propaganda videos. After constantly flagging videos just to see them remain because - "free speech" - cop-out bs. Also stuff like this:

MEMRI:

In the past three years, as part of the MEMRI Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor (JTTM) Project, we determined that YouTube has emerged as the leading U.S. website for online jihad. It has replaced – and surpassed – websites administered by jihadists themselves, which were previously their venue of choice.

MEMRI has briefed members of the U.S. government and Congress on this issue, and has also directly offered its assistance to YouTube in identifying videos that incite violence and terrorist acts for possible removal.

Al-Qaeda Online Threatens Navy SEAL Involved in bin Laden Raid

Finally, an idle threat I'd like to see the eHadis actually try. It's not really a fair fight. A wannabe al Qaeda member who lives in his mom's basement and fantasizes about goat porn and jihad, vs. a member of SEAL Team 6.

I almost feel sorry for the guy.

Yeah, please try it. Also, bring along a fellow jihadi to video tape the attempted murder. I'll pop some popcorn in anticipation:

Users on several militant Islamic websites affiliated with al-Qaida have posted the name and photo of a former Navy SEAL identified as the author of an upcoming book on the commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden. The posts called for his "destruction" in revenge for the al-Qaida founder’s killing....

"Oh Allah, make an example of him for the whole world and give him dark days ahead," read another....

"Here is the first picture of the dog who murdered the martyr Shaykh Usama Bin Laden," wrote one of the posters, using an alternate spelling of bin Laden's name. "May Allah have mercy on [bin Laden]."

Thanks to Laura.

What Lone Wolf Terrorists?

Ah, yes, the so-called "lone wolf" terrorist. This type of terrorist is more dangerous because they are harder to detect. Which is why in the waning days of his life, al Qaeda in the Arabian Penninsula's American publicist urged his compatriots to take up arms lone wolf style.

But what if most of these lone wolves weren't so lonely? That's what one study from Prof. Gabriel Weimann of the University of Haifa suggests:

According to Prof. Weimann, most of the “lonely wolves” make contact, share information, and acquire training through the Internet, whether from sites that are linked with terror organizations, from forums supporting such organizations, or from other platforms. In addition to this sort of “regular” activity on the web, social networks provide these individuals with their virtual wolfpack: a virtual community of people who think like them, who share their ideals, and with whom they can consult and share advice. “The virtual community gives the ‘lone wolf’ social environment, support, and moral encouragement,” Prof. Weimann notes.

The researcher presents a number of examples of such terrorists who supposedly acted alone. It was revealed that American officer Nidal Hasan, who shot and killed thirteen American soldiers, had communicated with a known terrorist through the Internet. Arif Uka, a young Bosnian who shot and killed American soldiers in Frankfurt, was a Facebook friend of various known Islamist radicals.

Another known example is the Internet activity that followed Mohamed Merah’s attack killing four Jews in Toulouse a number of months ago. Monitoring the web, Prof. Weimann has observed that immediately after Merah was killed in a police siege, members of Jihadist online forums began praising Merah’s act and encouraged additional acts like it. A Facebook page praising the killings was promptly created and by the time it was closed down with the involvement of the French government, 500 Facebook users had joined it. According to Prof. Weimann, it is these types of forums and activity that must be monitored to locate and identify the next “lone wolf”.

Wait, so you're telling me terrorists use the internet and are on social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter? Who knew?

Twitter/Instagram: What Iran Sanctions?
Bonus: Caption This!
Update: Fatwas Issued!

Twitter has no problem with Khamenei having an account. Neither does Instagram

Three years after shutting down Internet service after Iranians used Twitter and photo-sharing services to coordinate mass protests and tell the word about the Iranian regime's brutal crackdown, that same regime is getting in on the Twitter and photo-sharing action themselves.

Journo, Not Terrorists, Banned from Twitter

shabaab_twitter_account.jpg

Howie gave us the meh on why journalist Gery Adams getting his Twitter account yanked is really nothing compared to what we on the right have experienced in social media. I had my Facebook account yanked, no media outrage there.

But to put this into even better perspective, consider the fact that several terrorist organizations have their own Twitter accounts.

For instance, the al Qaeda linked al Shabaab Tweets here and here and here. Notice that all the users identify themselves as belonging to or associated with the State Department designated terrorist organization, and that they do so in English. That last link being an official spokesperson for the terrorist group.

Or check out the Twitter page for Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qssam Brigades. They're not hiding who they are. The Twitter page tells us that it is, "The official web site of Al Qassam Brigades in Palestine."

The Taliban even have their own Twitter account. We're at war with the Taliban.

Not only is that really outrageous, it's also illegal.

So, this whole outrage by the media is simply naval gazing: media outrage because it affects .... the media. The same goes for the Romney "kiss my ass" outrage of the day. The "victim" here was a member of the .... media.

These people are the enemy of common sense.

UPDATE: It gets worse -- the guy's Twitter suspension was lifted. I don't mind that, not at all. But why was it lifted? After much outrage and "backlash".

When was the last time the media foamed at the mouth over something truly worth a bit of backlash?

I dunno, like maybe the fact that people who kill innocent civilians and American servicemen are on f*cking Twitter?!??!?!!!!!

Islamic Terrorist Calls for Murder of German Anti Sharia Group Members for Insulting Islam

Jihad Watch:

"Far right" in this story and other mainstream media stories means opposition to Islamization and Sharia. "Islamist calls for murder of German far-right party: media," from Expatica, May 20 (thanks to David):
A German Islamist is calling for the murder of members of a far-right party that regularly provokes ultra-conservative Muslims using cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, a newspaper reported.

According to an article due to appear Monday in the Tageszeitung daily, an Islamist from Bonn in western Germany has appeared in a video on an Islamic forum in which he encouraged "the killing of all activists from the Pro NRW party".

Members of the small extreme-right political party held a campaign event using anti-Islamic caricatures ahead of an election in Germany's most populous state North Rhine-Westphalia on May 13.

In his appeal, the Islamist urged the collection of personal information on Pro NRW members, including their home addresses and work schedules, with the goal of attacking them.

The terrorist in question is Abū Ibrāhīm al-’Almānī’. Here is a copy of the threat uploaded to Youtube here by Jundullah Studio.

You can find more about Abū Ibrāhīm al-’Almānī’ here at Jihadiology. Note the second entry in this category.

Dailymotion, France's Leading Video-Sharing Website – A Jihadi Video Repository

No reason, just this image makes me laugh cuz they're dead..especially Sammy

I know we have covered this before but MEMRI has an excellent report and must read regarding some of who's who of online jihads and their nice, comfortable home at Dailymotion. Even after France's recent crackdown on "incitement" such as these jihadis create, they live on at Dailymotion.

This is just a snippet of the article, so be sure and read it all:

Jihadi Forum Members Explain Dailymotion's Advantages

In a thread on the Shumoukh Al-Islam jihadi forum on methods of uploading to video-sharing websites, "Abu Qudama Al-Muhajir" set out the advantages offered by Dailymotion: "For your information, my brothers, the Dailymotion website is excellent, as it accepts videos in most formats, including rmvb, and it accepts any amount of time. I uploaded the film la tukalif ila nafsak[5] in its entirety, without dividing it up [into segments]. One of [Dailymotion's] advantages is that it is less oppressive than YouTube, as the latter has declared war on anything that has to do with jihad by erasing its files. It also provides the option to withdraw [files] from other websites, such as Hotfile, 2shared, Filefactory, Sendspace, Megaupload, Mediafire and 4shared."[6]

A Shumoukh member going by the handle "zarqawi1" noted to fellow member "Ma'askar Khalden," who had created a YouTube archive of videos of Al-Qaeda commander Ayman Al-Zawahiri: "Don't forget to create a channel with the same videos on Dailymotion, since YouTube will eliminate your channel after several days[well not quite, but we try...ed], and all your hard work will be gone. So create a channel on Dailymotion and you will be pleased."[7][...]

Dailymotion is among the most prominent of these websites; videos produced by the media companies of Al-Qaeda and its affiliates inciting violent jihad and depicting violence are uploaded to the website on a daily basis[..]

Bringing Jihadi Propaganda to French Speakers .....

Pretty much sucks like Google's YouTube. As noted in the article, Dailymotion has removed some videos but like rats, they keep breeding.

So check the article out and the "references" at the end. Interesting links, I might add.

Taliban Blatantly Raising Funds Over the Internet
Obama Cool With That

Given this weekends blatant attack by the Taliban, I was reminded of this last week.

Via the Taliban's English Language Website

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Financial commission

...Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan which stood up with Muslim Ummah’s physical and financial support, are still waging legitimate Jihad single-handedly with mere help from common sincere Islam-loving masses and is in dire need of financial assistance from the Muslim brothers worldwide for its military and non-military expenditures.

...However, what if you were not prepared to fight in the way of Allah, either financially or in soul ? Prophet (sallallu alaihe wa salaam) says in Sahi Muslim "One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire or determination for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite."

Thus, save yourself from a greater hardship in the Hereafter and protect yourself against hellfire.

There is no life worth living except the life of the Hereafter and our hereafter depends on our present.

Let us save up for our Hereafter by doing our share of Jihad responding to the call of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and offer our monetary aid and donation to the financial officials of the Islamic Emirate so that it may be used to meet the requirements of the Jihad and Mujahideen fighting the invading forces on the ground in appropriate ways.

In case of any contributions, please contact the financial commission of Afghanistan on the following Email address.

I learned how to send money to the Taliban via one of their twitter feeds.

https://twitter.com/#!/GhazniwalTariq

So here we have American, British and Indonesian companies all helping the Taliban spread their message and raise funds.

In case we've forgotten this is unlawful both under US and International law.

President of the United States William J. Clinton declared Executive order 13129.
This was replaced by President Bush's executive orders 13268, 13224, 13372 and 13284 as well as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act

Providing business services, even free ones, to the Taliban violates the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) in the US. Each IEEPA violation of carries a fine of up to $250,000.

Providing business services to the Taliban also violates the Charter of the United Nations (Anti-terrorism — Persons and Entities) List, under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1373 of which Canada & the US have recognized as a legally binding resolution.

It also violates UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1267, of which Canada & the US recognize as binding law. "Asset holders are under an obligation to freeze the assets or economic resources of persons involved in terrorism as listed in the Consolidated List", of which the Taliban are listed.

Here's an example of an IEEPA prosecution for support of Hezbollah.

So lets face it. The Taliban exist on the web due to one factor and one factor only. The Administration's tolerance of their presence. There are plenty of tools at both the domestic and international level for them to exert pressure on the nations and providers who lend their systems to the Taliban's presence.

These are not the top tier forums where intelligence gathering on high level terrorists take place. These websites are static and target the general public.

We've exerted a bit of pressure of our own a few times Since the Obama administration has taken office. And the results have been quite different than under previous administrations.

It seems there is a deliberate failure to enforce these sanctions against the Taliban. The Obama administration has approved a Taliban embassy in Qatar and is seeking talks with the Taliban. It makes sense, given the administrations strategy, that interfering with the Taliban's messaging and fundraising would also be off limits. It might upset these delicate negotiations, No?

So tell me how's that been working out for you Mr. President?

Meanwhile, in northern Pakistan, Taliban militants raided a prison in Bannu, CNN reported, freeing 384 inmates.

Four prison officials were wounded in the two-hour attack, CNN said. According to a Pakistani information minister, 21 of the 384 escaped prisoners were "high-profile" militants, and the raid was apparently designed to free a senior Taliban commander.

"This is beyond terrorism," Iftikhar Hussain, the information minister of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, told CNN. "Such an attack challenges the writ of the state."

That good huh?

Canada: Dear Mayor of Fredericton, New Brunswick & Vagrant Web (Bumped-Update)

The owner of Vagrant Web has replied to my post. I want to thank Carter McLaughlin for looking into this and clearing this up. Our finest and bravest certainly will thank him:

I was made aware of your blog post and the reason behind that post by tweets to my personal Twitter account, @carter_vagrant. I did not notice and did reply to any tweets to the @vagrantweb account because of the reasons I will mention below.

I previously developed and released a social media sharing plugin for the Joomla CMS called "VagrantWeb Social Buttons". This plugin was a simple content sharing plugin released on the Joomla Extensions Directory. As part of the settings, you could enter your own Twitter account to be tagged, much like Sharethis plugins add the "via @sharethis" tag to the tweet. The default setting on the plugin was set to "via @vagrantweb".

Regrettably, this plugin appears to be used by nefarious and hateful organizations on their websites, as by design.. the plugin was available to anyone and everyone. I of course, do not condone, and in fact, condemn the use of this plugin by any hateful, illegal group.

It's highly regrettable that my companies name has been attached in any way to content being shared on Twitter that is of this horrible nature.

This plugin was deleted by myself from the Joomla Extensions Directory and is not supported in any way.

Please share this with your blog followers.

In peace,

Carter McLaughlin
Owner, Vagrant Web

I would also like to thank @Flippintheray for directing my tweets, and link to my post, to @carter_vagran.

Now, if Twitter would only do the right thing by suspending all of the Taliban twitter accounts THEN we wouldn't be having this problem to begin with..

I know...

************Begin original post

Taliban spokesperson, Tariq Ghazniwal ( @ghazniwaltariq), proudly uses a Canadian web hosting company, Vagrant Web.ca ( @vagrantweb) to spread the Taliban's propaganda on twitter.

It's bad enough he (and others) is even tweeting on twitter let alone using the above web host's via @ in his tweets:

twitter_taliban_canadawebhost_2.jpg

My tweets to the company have resulted in zero, zilch reply so I went the round of the Mayor of Fredericton, NB ( @bardwoodside), where the web host office resides. Zero, zilch, nada except for a PM thanking me for following him.

That's like not giving a d*mn about Canadian/American soldiers killed or injured by the Taliban.

The finest and bravest in the Canadian/American military deserve better than this. The Mayor, web host AND Twitter need to get their heads out of you know where...

End.of.rant.

Sandcrawler PSA: Top 8 Signs a Cyber Jihadi Might be Dangerous

Government Computer News:

While there are many factors that could indicate an individual online is considering committing a terrorist act, there is no smoking gun to determine who will actually act out, said Alix Levine, director of research at Cronus Global, in a recent presentation at the 2012 GovSec conference in Washington.

“On the Internet you can be anyone you want to be," said Levine, who assists and advises government officials on tracking and spotting potential terrorists. "You can be Osama bin Laden or support [those views] in forums." But an individual “won’t necessarily act that way in the real world. At what point does virtual and reality collide? What pushes someone over the edge?”

Some online behaviors of known terrorists that could indicate a predilection towards physical violence include:

Posting pictures of themselves with weapons.

Posting but removing other incendiary posts to avoid detection by law enforcement.

Threatening celebrities to gain fame.

Disseminating terrorist propaganda.

Access to elite (i.e., password protected) radical forums.

Creating their own propaganda.

Public posts of their desire to be part of the movement.

Creating content to help others strategically plan violent activities.

Abdullah Dhu Al-Bajadin: Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy the 1st Issue of Al-Qaeda Airlines Magazine

alqaeda_airlines_2.jpg

Move over Samir Khan (pun? intended) "How to make a bomb in your Mom's kitchen", here comes a explosive expert, jihadi Abdullah Dhu Al-Bajadin, to take your place.

73 pages long apparently, lots of pictures?

Also five videos, with English subtitles, s/b uploaded shortly by jihadis, wouldn't want to miss out on how to manufacture chemicals at home.

Al Qaeda's many-headed media beast is back at it — a bomb-making expert has published a new e-magazine providing how-to info for would-be terrorists.

The first installment to circulate through jihadist online circles is ominously titled Al Qaeda Airlines and features an image of a silhouetted twin-engine airliner climbing into the sunset. The 73-page text was penned by longtime jihadist and explosives guru Abdullah Dhu al-Bajadin, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist Web traffic. The mysterious figure is credited with writing an Internet encyclopedia of terror tradecraft, and once fielded online questions about bomb-making from wanna-be evildoers.

Why Google bomb making instructions when you have al-Bajadinoogle it all together!

From a Arabic forum:

In an attempt to change the routine that will be the new file in another area is the area of explosives - the Department of poisons, gases and drugs (sleeping pills) have chosen in the first issue to be a special substance chloroform narcotic and toxic in the same time - we chose him because he can Mujahid Alambtdy prepare it at home Mtafrh and materials in the grocery and supermarket and non-suspicious and Mtafrh all over the world and therefore will not need to Mujahid laboratory tools are expensive - with careful, dear brother to follow the wishes you all mentioned in the first issue of the new magazine
Chloroform! Yea, that's the ticket:

alqaeda airlines_chemicals.jpg
This is the issue of the Review of the files that took a long time in preparation because of the large number of studies on this article and more than one language and therefore abounded contradictions, especially in experiments on animals - anesthesia - or toxic dose - but thank God we were able to get out the file from the vortex to choose the appropriate the Mujahid at this time
