Another Angel in Heaven: Beastie Boys' MCA Dead at 47
Wow. I'm actually a little sad about this, which is almost never the case when a celebrity dies:
Beastie Boys co-founder Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, has died after a long battle with cancer, Rolling Stone confirmed. The Beastie Boys have been in my top 10 bands since like my Freshman year in high school. Unlike so many other bands I liked as a kid, they stood the test of time. I even have a "Beastie Boys Radio" station on Pandora. The Brooklyn-born rapper, 47, had been battling the late stages of his untreatable case at a New York hospital, sources told the Daily News.
I know what I'll be listening to the rest of the day.

America, The Beautiful
Happy 4th, America!
To start the celebration, I want to share one of the more memorable and unique versions of "America, The Beautiful" by the unforgettable Ray Charles:
Below the fold, also included are the lyrics and a few other versions. Pick your favorite. If not listed, post it in comments.
The King:
Lee Greenwood:
Charlie Rich:
Mormon Tabernacle Choir:
Whitney Houston:
Bon Jovi:
Willie Nelson (with many other Hollywood stars):
Jaycie Ward (a child singing at a baseball game):
Lyrics:
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion'd stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.
O beautiful for heroes prov'd
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country lov'd,
And mercy more than life.
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev'ry gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears.
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.

I decided to combine the Christmas music videos into one post. I'll be adding throughout Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with the most recent addition above the fold and the rest below the fold.
I hope you all enjoy the music. I'm trying to present a nice variety for all music tastes. Feel free to add your own favorites in comments.

Say A Little Prayer
Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, is suffering from cancer. She is doing well after recent surgery.
The Respect singer, 68, is suffering incurable advanced pancreatic cancer, a US mag claimed. Her family confirmed she had the disease but refused to give details or discuss her prognosis. Family and friends are "very concerned" but said she is doing well.

Happy 90th birthday to Jazz icon Dave Brubek
Dave Brubek is perhaps the greatest practitioner of the truly American musical art form, Jazz, and is the living historical embodiment of it. His influence on American music in all genres is so pervasive that his legacy is impossible to calculate. And he is still making music today.
Additionally, he is genuinely a decent human being, who has a loving wife, his college sweetheart Iola, and children who clearly adore him and regularly perform with him. Brubek is a patriot, having fought in Europe during WWII with Patton's Third Army, and a man of faith, having converted to Roman Catholicism later in life.
May we all be so truly blessed.
With that said, a very Happy 90th birthday to Dave Brubek.

Friday Night Rush
By the way, you idiots, it's now permissible and - dare we go there - cool to like this band in 2010.
Of course, we heads knew this long, long ago.

More Rachmaninoff!
One of my favorite pieces, in which the music dances adroitly and rhythmically around the D-major tonality - never quite touching it - until the final glorious release in the closing measures.
It's a good thing.

What Happens If Westboro Baptist Church Holds A Protest And No One Shows Up?
For the first time, I was hoping Muslims would protest...
We assumed something would happen. We assumed wrong. Nothing happened. You know what happens when you ass-u-me... I have to post the Assumption Song.
Could be safe for work, or could be NSFW. It all depends on the assumptions you make.

Gene Simmons Military Tribute
No matter how you feel about the rock group KISS, you have to respect Gene Simmons for this military tribute from his series, Family Jewels.
I know this video is a bit old, but I never get tired watching it.
Lyrics below the fold.
ARMY:
Over hill, over dale
We have hit the dusty trail,
And the Caissons go rolling along.
In and out, hear them shout,
Counter marching and right about,
And those Caissons go rolling along.
And it's hi! hi! hee!
In the field artillery,
count out your numbers loud and strong!
And where e'er you go,
You will always know
That the Army go rolling along.
The U.S. Army goes rolling along!
NAVY:
Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay.
Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam!
All around the world, it's U.S. Navy, forever, and strong!
U.S. Navy, forever, and strong!
AIR FORCE:
Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun!
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame.
Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!
Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!
MARINES:
From the Halls of Montezuma,
To the shores of Tripoli!
We will fight our country's battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean.
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine!
Of United States Marine!
AMERICA:
God Bless America, land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam,
God bless America, My home sweet home.

It's Ice!
Just because I'm in a Phishy mood. From their legendary 1996 Clifford Ball festival at the decommissioned Plattsburgh AFB in NY. As one of the few right-of-center Phishheads in the neoconosphere, I feel I occasionally must represent. For those of you who are attuned to or are proficient with any kind of axe or instrument, admit it to yourself - the boys were just killing it on this track. If so inclined, revisit this post tomorrow night after a few glasses of wine - preferably aged pinot noir.
If you don't agree, then you, sir, are worse than Hitler.

Every Friday I like to unwind by cracking open a couple of Dabs, and Lowenbraus and cranking up some funk.
