Two weeks ago, 24-year-old Pakistani-American Jubair Ahmad admitted that he had been making videos for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) from his Woodbridge, Virginia home under the direction of LeT leader Hafiz Saeed's son Talha. Around the same time, governments on both sides of the Atlantic published findings into the link between online activity and terrorism. In the United Kingdom, the Home Office published a paper that concluded "the internet does not appear to play a significant role in AQIR [al Qaeda influenced radicalization]," while in the United States, at a hearing on the Hill, RAND terrorism guru Brian Michael Jenkins concluded that jihadist websites "may create virtual armies, but these armies remain virtual." But while the link between turning individuals from passive consumers into active terrorists may be weak, cases like that of Jubair Ahmad show the important role this virtual army can play in magnifying the message of al-Qaeda and affiliated groups.

Jubair Ahmed is not the first Western individual who has helped establish websites or created video content in support of radical groups. One of the earliest was U.K.-based www.azzam.com, established in 1996, which provided a point from which groups in Afghanistan and Chechnya could broadcast their message while also telling potential recruits how to contact the groups. In addition, www.azzam.com (using the moniker Azzam Publications) helped produce a series of videos and cassette tapes about the fighting in Bosnia and Chechnya that venerated fighters in the field.

News is starting to leak about the arrest this weekend of a New York City man who planned to bomb police and military facilities. The NY Post reports:

The NYPD and Manhattan DA’s office have arrested a terror suspect who was planning to bomb city police facilities and US military sites, where he plotted to target returning war personnel and the families who gathered to welcome them home, The Post has learned.

The suspect, who lives in Manhattan, was arrested after he actually purchased bomb-making materials, sources said. He’d been on the authorities’ radar for about a year, the sources said.

It wasn’t immediately clear exactly where he planned to attack.

We can report here exclusively at PJM that the man arrested is Jose Pimentel of Harlem. On his Facebook page he describes himself as:

Why does this matter? Note the recent arrest of Jubair Ahmad for his work aiding the Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba. Lashkar-e-Taiba and its front group Jama'at-ud-Da'wah have a huge presence on Youtube. Also they are both specially designated terrorist entities. While Youtube removed the obvious accounts connected to this person, we've been quietly flagging a few videos and reporting some users behind the scenes in order to get a handle on Youtube's reaction. They've not taken down a single video or user we've looked at. NOT. A . SINGLE. ONE.

Of course its against the law to knowingly provide hosting to Jama'at-ud-Da'wah and Lashkar-e-Taiba. While we applaud the arrest of the individual the US Dept of Treasury has never ever pursued prosecution of a provider for knowingly providing these services. NOT. A. SINGLE. ONE. (please please super please correct me if I'm wrong on this)

Both are uploaded by a supporter of the terrorist organization, Lashkar-e-Taiba. And then LoonWatchers, another supporter of jihad, defends these videos as "pure political speech." To a LoonWatcher ONLY pro islam speech is "free."

The entire " Islamophobia movement" has but one purpose, to deflect attention from the jihad for khilafah. Flippin's sole purpose is to expose the jihad, in particular it's use of social media. LoonWatchers et al are Flippin's natural prey.

Flippin has gone beyond reasonable lengths to afford LoonWatchers et al the opportunity to tell the whole truth.[on twitter..ed] To some that seemed "a waste of time", a polite version. However, by going to such lengths, Flippin has confirmed beyond a reasonable doubt that LoonWatchers et al are NOT innocents. Flippin's Graphic Dept. is therefore "Weapons Free".

Jubair Ahmad, a 24 year old immigrant from Pakistan living in the D.C. suburb of Woodbridge, has been arrested for providing material support for a terrorist organization. The material support in question? He produced and uploaded videos to YouTube on behalf of the Pakistanit terrorist group behind the Mumbai massacre, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba.

YouTube, your days are numbered. Can there be any doubt, now, that YouTube has become an important tool for the jihadis to spread their propaganda?

I'm pretty sure I remember this YouTube account, but I'll need to confer with the posse to see if we have anything on them that we saved.

Here's the FBI presser:

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Jubair Ahmad, 24, a native of Pakistan and resident of Woodbridge, Va., has been arrested on charges in the Eastern District of Virginia of providing material support to Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), a designated foreign terrorist organization, and making false statements in a terrorism investigation.

The charges were announced by Neil H. MacBride, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Lisa Monaco, Assistant Attorney General for National Security; and James W. McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

If convicted, Jubair faces a maximum potential sentence of 15 years in prison on the material support charge and eight years in prison on the charge of making false statements in a terrorism investigation.

According to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, Jubair received religious training from LeT as a teenager in Pakistan and later attended LeT’s basic training camp. Jubair entered the United States in 2007 along with other family members, and in 2009, the FBI launched an investigation after receiving information that Jubair may be associated with LeT.

The affidavit alleges that in September 2010, Jubair produced and uploaded a propaganda video to YouTube on behalf of LeT, after communications with a person named “Talha.” In a subsequent conversation with another person, Jubair identified Talha as Talha Saeed, the son of LeT leader Hafiz Mohammed Saeed. Talha and Jubair allegedly communicated about the images, music and audio that Jubair was to use to make the video. The final video contained images of LeT leader Hafiz Saeed, so-called jihadi martyrs and armored trucks exploding after having been hit by improvised explosive devices.

In October 2010, Talha allegedly contacted Jubair and requested that he revise the LeT propaganda video, giving Jubair specific instructions. Jubair allegedly revised the video and posted it on Oct. 16, 2010. In August 2011, FBI agents interviewed Jubair, where he falsely denied any involvement with the October 2010 video.

This case was investigated by the FBI Washington Field Office. The prosecution is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia with assistance from the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

Criminal complaints are only charges and not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty.

UPDATE: My memory may be failing, but if convicted wouldn't Jubair be the first person to be convicted based solely on his YouTube activities?

UPDATE: Here is the affidavit against him. His details are redacted, but they forgot to redact the name of the video he made on behalf of LeT. Even though the video had been removed, an archive existed of the user who uploaded it.

So, this is Jubair Ahmad's YouTube account where he goes by the handle "AbuDujjana".

It will be interesting to see which of his friends deletes their various social media accounts first.

Remember, each time you flag one of these videos the more likely it will be that YouTube removes it. Each video removed means less eyeballs being propagandized. Less eyeballs means less feet making the trek towards jihad.

Plus, whoever is uploading the videos has to make the decision whether or not to waste another afternoon re-uploading them. That takes effort and effort takes commitment. The less committed will give up and the more committed? Well, we now have a clue about just who they are.

It's not a lot, but it's not nothing either.

Baby steps, people. Baby steps.
