French jihadist Gilles Le Guen, suspected of taking part in the attack on the Algerian gas plant in January, was arrested by French forces a few days ago in northern Mali, a French military spokesman reported on Tuesday.

The attack on Algeria's In Amenas gas plant saw 38 hostages and 29 assailants killed over a four-day period.

French Col. Thierry Burkhard said Tuesday that Gilles Le Guen was arrested this week north of Timbuktu, the fabled city which had been his base for some two years.[More..]

An escapee from a psychiatric institution slashed a rabbi and his son with a box-cutter on Tuesday, prompting witnesses to tackle and subdue the attacker after a chase through a Paris synagogue, officials said....

The assailant was of Iranian origin, and an official investigation was underway to determine a possible motive....

the assailant screamed “Allah-u-Akbar” — or “God is great” — during the attack.

One resident stated: "It was a big mistake to site the French embassy in our neighbourhood"

A car bomb has exploded outside the French embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli, wounding two French guards and several residents.

The blast in Tripoli destroyed the embassy's ground-floor reception area and perimeter wall, as well as damaging neighbouring homes and shops.

French President Francois Hollande called on Libya to act swiftly over this "unacceptable" attack.

It is the first major attack on a foreign embassy in the Libyan capital.

Tuesday's explosion happened shortly after 07:00 (05:00 GMT) in a smart residential area of Tripoli.

One of the embassy's guards was severely injured while the other suffered lighter injuries. Several residents were also slightly hurt.

One young girl suffered a spinal cord injury and was being transferred to neighbouring Tunisia for treatment, her father told the BBC[...]

Many neighbours who gathered in the street to survey the damage were shaken and upset by what had happened, our correspondent says.

They told her that there was a lack of proper policing for such a potentially high-profile target

"It was a big mistake to site the French embassy in our neighbourhood," a local resident said.

One was a soldier, and some reports claim that the three helped the murderer, Mohamed Merah, get the scooter he used in the shootings:

Agnes Thibault Lecuivre of the prosecutor’s office said two people were arrested late Tuesday in Toulouse, adding that one of the arrests took place in the gritty Les Izards neighborhood where Merah spent some of his childhood.

A third person, a serving French soldier, was arrested at his barracks on Wednesday morning in the nearby town of Castres.

Two Frenchmen suspected of plotting terrorist attacks, making explosives and extremist activity online were detained Thursday, amid heightened concern about threats to France over its military campaign against al-Qaida-linked fighters in Mali.

Officials at the Interior Ministry and the Paris prosecutor’s office say intelligence and police officers detained the young men Thursday in a house in Marignane near the Mediterranean port city of Marseille. Authorities were scouring the house for explosives or other evidence of terrorist connections. The suspects are French citizens, aged 18 and 20, the officials said.

The suspects were identified as Ali Dokaev, arrested in Noyon, 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Paris; Elsy Issakov, arrested in Les Lilas on the east side of Paris; and Mourad Idrissov, arrested in Genevieve des Bois, on the south side of Paris, the ministry said.

Several Islamist and jihadi groups have called for a demonstration outside the French embassy in Cairo, in protest over France's campaign against jihadis in Mali. The demonstration is slated to be held January 18, following Friday prayers[today..ed]. The groups, which include the General Islamic Movement (Al-tayyar al-islami al-'am), a coalition of Islamist groups; the Hazem Abu Isma'il Ultras; and the Salafi-jihadi movement, have issued their calls via their Facebook pages, among other venues[...]

The Salafi-jihadi movement, for its part, confirmed that its leaders and members will attend the demonstrations. A statement on their websites read: "At your service, Mali, the state of Islam! The infidel states of the West continue to pick fights in our Muslim countries with the soldiers of the devil, hoping to extinguish the light of the state of Islam, but how wrong they are! If Allah sows [something], who can reap [it]?"

The Salafi-jihadi leaders who confirmed attendance include Muhammad Al-Zawahiri[al-Qaeda #1' bro..ed], Ahmad Salama Mabrouk, Mirjan Salem, Tawfiq Al-'Afani, and others.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zawahiri's group and the others, again, demand the release of the no eyed bitch during the Islamic Rage boys demonstration today.

Famous last words you know.

French forces led an all-night bombing campaign over a minuscule Malian town, not even big enough to appear on most administrative maps, in an effort to dislodge the Islamic extremists who seized the area, including its strategic military camp.

Meanwhile, a convoy of 40 to 50 armed trucks carrying French troops crossed into Mali from Ivory Coast, where they were stationed, as France prepares for a possible land assault.

French President Francois Hollande launched an attack on Mali's rebels, who are linked to al Qaeda, last week after the rebels began advancing south. France's action preempted a United Nations-approved plan for a military operation in Mali, which was expected to start about nine months from now. Hollande decided a military response could not wait that long.

Obama has also committed to help Hollande clean up the mess in Mali. I mean after all they made it. We can't have it turning out like say Libya now can we?

After Mali & Somalia military action

The French president says the country will raise its domestic terror threat level after military action in Mali and Somalia, promising to increase protection at public buildings and transportation networks.

President Francois Hollande said Saturday he had ordered increased security after the French military operations in the two African countries against Islamist forces.

France has some of the world's most recognizable monuments and a wide-ranging national transportation network; like the U.S., it also has an organized government response if there are specific fears of a terrorist attack.

French aircraft and troops are backing soldiers in Mali who are trying to push back Islamist offensives; in Somalia, French commandos launched a failed raid to rescue an intelligence agent held hostage there for three years.[...]

For the past nine months, the Islamic militants have controlled a large swath of northern Mali, a lawless desert region where kidnapping has flourished.

"French armed forces supported Malian units this afternoon to fight against terrorist elements," Hollande said in Paris.

He did not give any details of the operation, other than to say that it was aimed in part at protecting the 6,000 French citizens in Mali, where seven of them already are being held captive.

(Paris, France) France's Socialist President François Hollande jacked up income tax rates to 75% and the Constitutional Council said no.

The tax rate had angered business leaders and prompted some wealthy French citizens to seek tax exile abroad, including actor Gérard Depardieu who recently took up residency in Belgium.

The Constitutional Council said in its ruling that the temporary two-year tax rate, due to take effect next year, was unconstitutional because unlike other forms of income tax it applied to individuals instead of whole households.

As a result, the council said, the tax rate "failed to recognise equality before public burdens".

President François Hollande said on Thursday that Islamist groups holding French hostages in Africa were not trustworthy….

French police arrested two people on Tuesday in connection with the attacks by extremist gunman Mohamed Merah, whose shooting spree in and around the southern city of Toulouse this year left seven people dead.

One man described by police as a member of the traveller community who converted to Islam was detained on suspicion of having provided aid to Merah in carrying out the March attacks that shocked France.

He was arrested without incident at his home in the town of Albi, about 70 kilometres (45 miles) northeast of Toulouse, where he was to be taken for questioning, police sources said.

His former partner was arrested separately at her home in Toulouse, with police saying she may have been aware of his involvement and failed to inform authorities.

The nature of his alleged involvement was unclear, but investigators have been searching for a suspected "third man" believed to have been with Merah and his brother Abdelkader during the theft of a scooter used in the attacks.

Merah shot a rabbi, three Jewish schoolchildren and three French paratroopers in March before being shot dead in a police siege in Toulouse.[More...

A man, a member of the traveler community, was arrested in a small town between Albi and Castres, where he lives so sedentary. A source close to the case said Le Figaro that this 38 year old man who had converted to Islam for some time. He was close to Mohamed Merah, and perhaps his brother Abdelkader, he had known in the city of Toulouse Izards where they grew up together.

The suspect is already stuck in nine cases including cases of theft, outrage and rebellion, abuse or weakness of drunken driving. It was a priori unknown intelligence. His ex-girlfriend has meanwhile been arrested in Toulouse to determine its possible involvement

"I am proud of my brother, he fought till the end (...) I think well of Bin Laden, I told the cops, I can tell you." She does not hide its antisemitic sentiments: "The Jews, all those who are massacring Muslims, I hate them." "The Salafists, they act," she said again. "Me and (Abdel) Kader, it supports the Salafists, Mohamed took the plunge. I am proud, proud, proud, "she shouted.

Update II: The situation has been resolved and the hostages are safe and the terrorist was only slightly wounded. Some are describing him as a mental case, we're glad to see the press as finally come around to the idea that support of Islamic terrorist groups is a mental disorder.

You guys remember Censored31? He's the Belgian al Qaeda supporter who used to troll the comments section. I goof on him from time to time. He's part of a network of extremists centered in Belgium, but which is also active in France and the Netherlands.

It's a small, small world:

A family with jihadist connections

Merah's path to radicalism remains murky but appears to have been influenced by family connections. His mother is married to Sabri Essid, a member of a Toulouse network that tried to recruit fighters to join al Qaeda in Iraq. Essid was convicted in a French court in 2009 after being detained in Syria in 2006 where he was running an al Qaeda safe house.

According to French security officials, Merah tried to visit his stepfather in prison in 2008 and sent him money.

His brother Abdelkader was also suspected of involvement in the same network but not charged. He has now been charged with complicity in the recent spate of murders.

A senior Belgian counterterrorism official has told CNN that Abdelkader Merah first came to their notice during a joint investigation in 2008 with French police into a Brussels, Belgium-based jihadist recruitment network. The network was sending Belgian and French militants to Cairo en route to join militants in Iraq -- and may also have connected Europeans to jihadist groups in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region

Not so incidentally, even though the leadership of Shariah4Belgium is sitting in jail their website continues to operate. Notice their avatar in the upper left hand corner of their webpage. That's al Qaeda's flag.

And just in case al Qaeda's flag being part of the banner representing the group was too subtle, they have this message from Osama bin Laden in their link banner rotation.

Didn't Mohammad Merah say he was motivated to kill little Jewish kids as revenge for what was happening in Palestine? It's almost as if he got that idea from somewhere.....

Here is their YouTube channel. Check out the videos. You'll notice that the number one visual motif common to them is .... the black flag of al Qaeda.

Howie complained about them to YouTube. The response he got was that Google's employees over at YouTube couldn't find anything in the videos that violated their TOS.

They openly fly the flag of al Qaeda, and Google thinks it's fine. I wonder how they'll feel when one of the victim's families sues them for wrongful death?

Time:

A police investigator told The Associated Press that the anti-terrorist section of the Criminal Brigade detained five men before dawn in Paris who had suspected links to an Islamist movement. Weapons were also seized, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with the department's rules.

The other arrests took place in Toulouse, Marseille, Nantes and Lyon, the official said, adding that these raids were not linked to the inquiry into the slayings in Toulouse and Montauban.'

In Nantes, the head of Forsane Alizza, a radical Muslim group that formed two years ago, was among the detained. In October 2011, a preliminary inquiry was opened into the Forsane Alizza organization, and the French Interior Ministry broke up the group in February.

Meet Dr. Adlene Hicheur, a physicist who worked at CERN and an aspiring member of al Qaeda. And how did he become radicalized and through what medium did he try to join an al Qaeda cell? The internet:

French anti-terrorist services have said they first flagged Hicheur because of his frequent visits to radical Islamic websites. However, the order for the scientist’s arrest came only after he began exchanging emails with “Shadow Phoenix”, the alleged pseudonym of Moustapha Debchi, a key player in the north African branch of al Qaeda.

Of the 35 emails allegedly exchanged between the two men, one will feature prominently during Hicheur’s trial. In June 2009, Debchi asked Hicheur: "Don't beat around the bush: are you prepared to work in a unit becoming active in France?"

The scientist replied: "Concerning your proposal, the answer is of course YES..."

The answer, of course, has to be that they must already have been predisposed to violent radicalism:

In an interview with centre-left daily Le Monde, Hicheur’s lawyer, Patrick Baudouin, said his client was a moderate Muslim who was interested in his religion from a young age. He also said he developed a “critical view of the world”, in particular over the Iraq War and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The terrorists in Fatah are constantly telling themselves that they are moderates, not like those crazy fanatics in Hamas. And the guys in Hamas consider themselves moderates, not like those crazy al Qaeda types. And so forth, and so on.

It's the problem many Muslims never seem to grapple with when the move to the West. In their own societies they may be very much a moderate. But measured against Western values they really are in the radical fringes.

When his family defends his al Qaeda sympathies written on Islamist forums and in emails with members of al Qaeda as "free speech", then it's not a stretch to infer that the family doesn't quite get what a "moderate" really looks like in the West.

I also can't help but wonder if his extensive stints within the walls of academia weren't just as important in shaping his worldview of who "the enemy" really was as was his religious upbringing? He spent time at some of the world's most prestigious universities -- for instance, Stanford -- where Marxist and other radicals find their ideas have a home.

Combine the two -- Leftist ideology and Islamic supremacy -- and that's just a recipe for disaster.

If Mohammad Merah didn't send the snuff video showing him murdering his victims, then it certainly implies that he was not alone. So, his rantings to the media and the police about what "we" wanted, may not have been all bluster. Remember, he had gone to Pakistan and Afghanistan and trained with al Qaeda or one of its affiliates.

The evidence suggests the "lone wolf" narrative being foisted on us by the media may be way, way off:

A French official close to the investigation said it was not sent by Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman who was killed in a shootout Thursday after a 32-hour standoff with police at his apartment building in Toulouse.

Another official said the envelope sent to Al-Jazeera contained a Wednesday postmark from a large postal processing center for the area around Toulouse, meaning it was unclear exactly where it was mailed from. He could not say anything about who may have sent the video.

The first official said a technical analysis had concluded that it was not sent by Merah but did not indicate whether that analysis included fingerprints, DNA, surveillance or other data.

Mohamed Merah's brother, Abdelkader, described as an Islamic fundamentalist says he's proud that little bro killed a few apostates and Jews:

Le Point news weekly and other French media reported him as telling investigators he had no knowledge of his brother's acts, but that he was "proud" of them.

"Religion has nothing to do with this. He got worked up all by himself," the brother of Merah's mother, whose identity was withheld, said.

An English teacher sparked outrage across France today after calling for her pupils to observe a minute’s silence for Toulouse serial killer Mohammed Merah.

In disturbing scenes at Gustave Flaubert High School in Rouen, Normandy, Lorraine Collin, 56, described the 23-year-old who murdered seven including three children as himself being the ‘victim of an unhappy childhood’.
This prompted up to 15 pupils aged between 17 and 18 to storm out of their classroom and report Ms Collin to their headmaster.

Nicholas Sarkozy: The Jawa Report's biggest fan:

Sarkozy argued that it was time to treat those who browse extremist websites the same way as those who consume child pornography....

"Anyone who regularly consults Internet sites which promote terror or hatred or violence will be sentenced to prison," he told a campaign rally in Strasbourg, in eastern France. "What is possible for pedophiles should be possible for trainee terrorists and their supporters, too."

The critics of Sarkozy's proposal are already claiming that any one who now visits a jihadi website will be jailed. But I don't think that's the case at all. They're looking for regular visitors to jihadi websites, not the casual lookie-loo. The key words here being "regular visitors".

I'll note that the Forsane Alizza internet group, of which Mohammad Mera belonged, had 415 members. And that's just a single online extremist group. There are many more that cater to French speakers.

And even though France had outlawed the group, they continued to carry on their activities online. Banning organizations that support terror rings hallow in the internet age. So, we can't assemble together physically? We'll just get together online!

If you don't understand that cyberspace shares many of the characteristics of physical space, you've already ceded this important territory to the enemy.

Of course, Either Sarkozy doesn't realize the scale of the problem and he'll backpedal when he realizes that thousands of his citizens visit extremist websites, or it's time to invest in whatever French company makes striped uniforms.

The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has joined the ranks of the unemployed again. Just one day after being named guest editor of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hedbo, the paper's office was destroyed by fire.

Apparently some Islamophobes feared Muhammad's new position would give him too much power and decided to destroy the paper once and for all.

The phobes hurled back charges that Muhammad's own followers had burned the office calling it an inside job.

When asked for comment Muhammad said that the suggestion that his followers would destroy property was outlandish, "Islam is a religion of peace," he was quoted as saying by several major news outlets.

I guess I could only come up with one reason and now that is pretty much shot in the ass. No more drinking on the job!!?? What is this....Russia?

Al Jazeera:

"President Nicolas Sarkozy's refusal to remove his forces from Afghanistan is nothing but a green light for killing the French hostages," Bin Laden says in the recording, broadcast on Al Jazeera on Friday.

"We repeat the same message to you: The release of your prisoners in the hands of our brothers is linked to the withdrawal of your soldiers from our country."

This is the second tape that Bin Laden, believed to be hiding in the mountainous border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan, has released an audio recording attacking French policy and linking the French presence in Afghanistan to the kidnapping of its nationals in Niger.

Seven foreigners, including five French nationals, were kidnapped in Niger in September, with the group's north African wing Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claiming responsibility.

It gives us a clue as to either his proximity to or trust level of Adam Gadahn and the rest of the crack staff at as Sahab productions. He may not be close enough to the crew, he may not trust them (would you?), or he may believe that the distribution network of al Fajr might somehow be traced back to his physical location.

Let's assume, though, that it's simply a proximity issue and that bin Laden simply isn't near those who produce propaganda for him. We're fairly sure that Gadahn is holed up with one of his goat-ugly wives in a small village in the nether-regions of Pakistan. So where is bin Laden?

I'm just wondering if there is something about his sudden and keen interest in Saharan Africa that is a clue as to his location? Or is that just crazy talk?
