Giant Cross Falls on Nasir Al-Wuhayshi

Well not so much a cross as a hellfire missile.

Al Qaeda's second in command, Nasir al-Wuhayshi, has been killed in a drone strike in Yemen, dealing a heavy setback to the leadership of the international terrorist group.

Al-Wuhayshi was the top leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the most dangerous and dynamic branches of the jihadist network.

Next up for elimination.

Zawahiri's Failure is Complete

Sources within Ahrar al-Sham stated that their allies in Jabhat al-Nusra have told them that AQ leader Ayman al-Zawahiri will relinquish his authority – or what left of it – over AQ branches globally and absolve them of their allegiance to him. The move was in response to the rising power of Islamic State in Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Libya and Nigeria as well as new IS incursion into Yemen. AQ and Zawahiri can no longer offer any meaningful leadership...

Flatting Jawa Report File Image of Zawahiri

Yemen Another Obama Foreign Policy Success

Yemen as of today is a failed state.

Not that it was much better before, so you now have a choice, abandon Yemen to AQAP or let Iran and the Houthis work over AQAP in Yemen for US.

Yeah I know the press is always saying that the Houthis are the other Shia, not the Persian Shia and that may be true but the Administration wants to play down any Iranian connections or support for obvious reasons. Namely sectarian conflict.

I say we need to play this sectarian conflict the way folks in the ME would. Play it dirty, and let Iran and AQAP go at it. For so long as they are killing each other they are not killing US.

So go pop some popcorn kids. And my apologies to those of you that didn't like the other Pop Corn Song. Here is a more modern, appropriate and multicultural version.

AQAP Releases Threats to Blow Up Airliner For Baby Jesus' Birthday

al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has issued a new issue of their magazine Inspire #13 and a video to go with it asking Muslims to blow up an airliner.

The video is called Open Source Jihad.

After some clips of US officials speaking of the threat al-Qaeda poses the video asks, "What if this can be made in the kitchen of your mother?"

Then the video shows and extensive production of the downing of a western airliner complete with screaming infidels being sucked out of a depressurized airliner and its crash.

Apparently a clip from World War Z according to readers

Jawa Report has obtained copies of both, I'm still looking these over.

It appears the magazine carries the same theme complete with how to instructions on committing a terrorist act against an airliner.

AQAP has long sought to bring down an airliner in a spectacular attack.

I see no indication at this point they have an attack planned, but instead hope to inspire Muslims in the west to carry out the attack in their stead. Just a reminder to stay vigilant and remember al-Qaeda wants to kill us and would if they could.

Given the recent spate of attacks its prudent to stay alert if you are traveling.

Update one of the lone wolf Jihadis in this weeks' series of attacks in France is featured in Inspire 13.

As is long time Jawa nemesis Samir Khan.

Gay, and also dead.

There is also an article on Ramzi Yusuf who was involved in the first World Trade Center bombing. Also a message to America holding up the Tsarnev brothers as heroes and threatening more attacks.

*Then followed by step by step instructions in building and sneaking a bomb onto an aircraft.

A more analysis here at IntelWire.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula put out the 13th issue of its English-language magazine Inspire, with content and timing clearly meant to invoke the specter of its most-mocked attack, the 2009 Christmas Day bombing attempt in which a would-be terrorist wearing an underwear bomb did incredible damage to his own genitalia but failed to take down a plane.

Much of the issue is devoted to instructions for a "new" kind of "hidden" bomb that "America does not expect," a self-defeating announcement intended more to provoke an outburst of security theater than anything else. If this bomb design has any purpose at all, it is to sell full-body scanners to airports, as the instructions helpfully note that the bomb is vulnerable to such.

... It also includes lackluster responses from Anwar Awlaki to questions posed years ago by Inspire readers, reading lists and lengthy psuedo-intellectual justifications of jihadist action, of the sort ISIS has largely rendered obsolete in favor of a stripped down argument that can be summarized as "let's just kill a bunch of folks."

Observation: AQAP assumes, logically, that anyone stupid enough to do this will still live with his mommy.

*Obviously we won't be giving out copies of this to the public for obvious reasons.

But selected analysts and readers, feel free to request a copy. We'll make that judgement on a case by case basis.

Boston Blogger Becomes ISIS Media Head

American Thinker:

Yet another American is suspected of joining ISIS and using skills acquired in this country to advance the goal of a global caliphate. Ahmad Abousamra, a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston with a degree related to computer technology, is suspected of being the social media manager of ISIS and is on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.
Ahmad Abousamra is a long time participant in the Cyber Jihad.

Jawa Report first ran his addition to the most wanted list in December of last year.

He is a long time associate of convicted terrorist Tarek Mehanna, who still maintains that he's, you know, totally innocent, convicted, he claims, of "thought crimes."

Thought crimes, as in when two US soldiers were dragged through the streets and burned in Iraq he called it..

There is still an online campaign to free Mehanna.

Both Mehanna and Ahmad Abousamra cut their radical teeth so to speak under the guidance of Sharon Imam Muhammad Masood who was later deported to Pakistan for visa fraud.

With Masood starting in on Ahmad Abousamra as early as age 14.

I would just like to add this comment from Rusty:

The charge is yet another indication that internet jihadis are often dangerous and should be taken seriously.
The online Jihad is just not speech, its often times advocacy and material support for the most extreme and terrorist organizations on Earth. Terrorists who are at war against all of us. Tolerating it as just thought crimes leads to what we have now in Syria and Iraq. Its just as, if not more dangerous in the long run as the car bomb on the field of combat.

The Jihad must have recruits it must be promoted and that is where people like Daniel Maldanodo, Terek Mehanna and Ahmad Abousamra become not just a a bother, but a truly dangerous aspect of the Islamofascist war against all who would stand against an extreme sixth century caliphate like the one ISIS is creating in Iraq and Syria.

Hundreds Of Al Qaeda Members And Leaders Gather; Obama Administration Misses The Boat

From CNN:

A new video shows what looks like the largest and most dangerous gathering of al Qaeda in years. And the CIA and the Pentagon either didn't know about it or couldn't get a drone there in time to strike.

U.S. officials won't comment on that, but every frame of the video is now being analyzed by the United States.

In the middle of the clip, the man known as al Qaeda's crown prince, Nasir al-Wuhayshi, appears brazenly out in the open, greeting followers in Yemen. Al-Wuhayshi, the No. 2 leader of al Qaeda globally and the head of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, has said he wants to attack the United States. But in the video, he looks unconcerned that he could be hit by an American drone.

The video started appearing on jihadist websites recently, drawing the attention of U.S. officials and global terrorism experts. U.S. officials say they believe it's authentic.

Confirming what Everybody Knows: al Qaeda Trying to Produce Chemical Weapons

It's one thing to want to produce chemical weapons, another to train people to produce them, and still another to get them to work. Luckily the path from aspiration to using them successfully is usually a lot longer and harder than people suspect.

However, is it really "news" that al Qaeda wants to use chemical weapons? They want to use nukes, but the fact that they haven't yet is evidence not of lack of intention but rather lack of ability.

I think the same thing can be said about their chemical weapons program. Sure, they want to make them. And, in fact, they've probably tried to use them on several occasions. But homemade chemical weapons almost never produce the mass casualties aspired for.

So, this isn't so much news as it is "news":

On Wednesday, CBS News obtained a document filed by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York indicating that three men charged with being members of the al-Shabab terrorist group in Somalia had "substantial knowledge regarding an al-Shabaab research and development department that was developing chemical weapons." ..

The new document says the defendants' planned to join al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, the terror network's branch in Yemen which has orchestrated numerous recent, high-profile a terrorist attacks, including plots targeting the U.S. mainland.

So, al Shabaab had people who they thought could produce chemical weapons. And these guys decided to go to Yemen and join al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, bringing that knowledge with them.

I post this not so much as "news" as a reminder of what we've known for a long time but seem to lose focus on from time to time: al Qaeda is not dead, and the fact that they haven't hit the homeland since 9/11 is not for lack of trying.

Tribal officials then said that two Yemeni troops and another AQAP fighter were killed during clashes that followed. "A cache of weapons was found at the site" of the strike, according to Reuters.

"So Called American Citizen": Is That Another Name For Traitor?

Sen Feinstein calls Awlaki a so called American citizen

We’re still trying to wrap our heads around Democratic Rep. John Conyers’ suggestion to start calling illegal immigrants “out of status” new Americans, and now Sen. Dianne Feinstein has thrown us another curve. While questioning CIA director nominee John Brennan at his confirmation hearing today, Feinstein referred to [AQAP's..ed]radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in a Predator drone strike in 2011, as a “so-called American citizen.”
I guess that means the North Carolina Muslim, Samir Khan, was also a "so-called American citizen" too? Sammy went to Yemen, joined AQAP and was proud to 'denounce' his citizenship, as he pointed out in "Inspire":

Therefore, I am proud to be a traitor in America’s eyes just as much as I am proud to be a Muslim; and I take this opportunity to accentuate my oath of allegiance (bai`yah) and the mujahidin of the Arabian Peninsula’s bai`yah to the ferocious lion, the champion of jihad, the humble servant of God, my beloved Shaykh, Usama bin Ladin, may Allah protect him. Verily, he is the man that has shook the thrones of the tyrants of the world. We pledge to wage jihad for the rest of our lives until either we implant Islam all over the world or meet our Lord as bearers of Islam. And how reputable, adventurous and pleasurable is such a life compared to those who remain sitting, working from nine to five?
He was with Awlaki when he was droned, so what? We killed 2 al-Qaeda bitches, period.

AQAP’s media arm, al Malahem Foundation, released the video on jihadist forums on December 23. According to the unidentified jihadist forum user, the original video released on December 23 is missing a section offering a bounty for the killing of U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Gerald Feierstein and U.S. soldiers. A reward of 3,000 grams of gold was offered for the killing of Ambassador Feierstein and five million Yemeni Riyals was offered for the killing of a U.S. soldier serving in Yemen. The rewards would reportedly be paid within six months of the announcement.[1]

Allahu Dronebar!!

A Yemeni jihadist has identified two of the five al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula members who were killed in a US drone strike in eastern Yemen on Dec. 24. The two AQAP fighters escaped from a Yemeni prison 18 months ago.

The jihadist announced "the martyrdom of the two mujahideen brothers Abdullah Bawazir and Nabil al Kaldi" in a statement that was released today on the al Qaeda-linked Ansar al-Mujahideen forum, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which obtained and translated the statement. Images of the two fighters, including photographs taken after their deaths, accompanied the announcement.

"They were martyred after an American drone strike with three rockets at a group of mujahideen near al-Watan stadium in the city of al Shehr, al Mukallah, today," the jihadist continued, according to SITE. The identities of the other three fighters are not yet known.

According to the jihadist, Bawazir and al Kaldi appeared in an al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula video titled "Story of Salvation," which documented the June 2011 escape of the two fighters and other AQAP operatives from the Mukallah prison. In that incident, 46 inmates, including many al Qaeda operatives, escaped from the Mukallah prison after tunneling under it. SBD™: US kills AQAP bombmaker, 9 fighters in pair of strikes in Yemen

I love it when terrorists are sploded by drone (SBD™)

The US launched two drone strikes against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen today[yesterday...ed], killing a senior bombmaker and nine other fighters. The US has now conducted three strikes in Yemen in the past four days. Meanwhile, jihadists named one of the AQAP fighters killed in Saturday's drone strike.

In the first strike, the unmanned Predators or Reapers fired several missiles at two vehicles traveling in the town of Rawdah in Baydah province, The Associated Press reported. Yemeni officials said that Abdullah Awad al Masri, a wanted bombmaker who is also known as Abou Osama al Maribi, was killed in the strike. It is unclear if he is a Yemeni, however, as his surname, al Masri, indicates he is an Egyptian.

Two Egyptians, a Tunisian, a Saudi, and a Bahraini were among the seven AQAP fighters killed in the strike. Their identities have not been disclosed.

Six Seven Eight Terrorists Arrested In UK (Updated)

Members of the Religion of Peace™? No way!!11!!

I'm shocked, SHOCKED, I tell ya!

From AP:

A total of six people were arrested there and in separate raids in other parts of the capital, but Scotland Yard said the operation was not linked to the upcoming games, due to kick off on July 27.

Police didn't identify the suspects, who range in age from 18 to 30.

However Mizanur Rahman, who is involved with a Muslim activist group, said all those arrested were British Muslims. He said the three men taken into custody in Stratford, the neighborhood that contains Olympic Park, were brothers and claimed that one was a former police support officer.

Scotland Yard declined to comment on the claim.

Update II: (Un)Related, it hasn't been a good summer for Islamic terrorists (H/T: Anna in comments)...

From The Telegraph:

Minh Quang Pham, 29, is said to have sworn an oath of allegiance to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsular (AQAP) after leaving Britain to join the terrorist group in December 2010. [...]

He is said to have “facilitated communications and provided expert advice and assistance in photography and graphic design” for AQAP’s media wing.

He allegedly met two American citizens, referred to only as “American CC-1” and “American CC-2”, working with the former to produce online propaganda for AQAP.

At the time Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, both of whom were US citizens, were running the propaganda operation for AQAP which included the notorious on-line magazine called “Inspire.”

Update III: Going for the Hat Trick, another Islamic terrorist arrested, though this one in France, not the UK. This one appears to be a major enabler. Hat tip to Howie.

Report: Al Qaeda Planning To Bomb U.S. Plane In Run-Up To Olympics?

The "report" on this is sketchy at best. Apparently this comes from British intelligence officials.

Via NYPost

Intelligence officials have uncovered a new al Qaeda plot to bomb a US passenger jet in the run-up to the London Olympics, according to a new report.

Al Qaeda's Yemen-based terror cell, the same organization behind the 2009 attempted underwear bombing and a similar terror plot uncovered by a CIA informant less than two months ago, is believed to be behind this latest planned attack, according to the Sunday Times of London.

The plan is not specifically targeted to the Olympics, intelligence officials told the paper, and instead should be seen as another attempt by al Qaeda's Yemen affiliate to blow up a US plane

“There is terrorist plotting going on irrespective of the Olympics. The only thing that connects this to the Olympics is the fact that they are about to happen,” said a Whitehall official.

Vietnamese Immigrant Charged With Aiding AQAP
Met With Awlaki & Samir Khan

Minh Quang Pham allegedly helped design and distribute AQAP "propaganda"

A Vietnamese immigrant has been charged in New York over an alleged role in helping al-Qaida in Yemen.

Minh Quang Pham was arrested in Britain. He is accused of traveling to Yemen to train with members of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

Pham is also accused of helping the group with its online propaganda efforts. Investigators said he was in Yemen from December 2010 through July 2011.

The article further states he met with Anwar al Awlaki and Samir Khan. As regular readers know, both were droned. Too bad this assmaggot wasn't with them at the time.

Update: Alternative title: Samir Khan's assistant arrested in Britain, soon to be shipped to USA

Update II: The IPT has a PDF link to Pham's (aka "Amin") indictment

From the indictment, Pham appears to have been actively participating with AQAP just months before the United States killed senior American al-Qaida propagandists Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan. The drone strike effectively halted AQAP's reach in the English-speaking world, although the group released two additional issues of the Inspire magazine produced by al-Awlaki and Khan.

Inspire 9 Different Editor Same Anti-Semitism

Some basic analysis of the differences between AQAP's Inspire 8 and Inspire 9.

l Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's release of issues eight and nine of its English-language terrorist magazine, Inspire, serves as a reminder of the group's continued effort to target western audiences.

These issues, released on May 2, 2012, are the first since Samir Khan, believed to be the principal author of the magazine, was killed in a September 2011 drone strike along with popular jihadist ideologue and magazine contributor Anwar al-Awlaki. At the time, their deaths led to speculation of the media franchise's demise.

Inspire 8 is dated fall 2011 and does not address the eight-month delay of its publication. The feature article, written by al-Awlaki, offers religious justifications for attacking civilian populations. The article was written in response to reader-submitted questions, the most prevalent of which apparently concerned the religious authorization for attacks on civilians.

Awlaki condones and encourages the use of explosives, firearms, poisons, and chemical and biological weapons. The only limitation he apparently places is a prohibition on "the execution of women or children when the target is clear."

The article concludes that some of the material claimed to be authored by Samir Khan and Anwar al-Awlaki differs in editing style. Also discussed the above ad which appears with an article which urges Muslims to carry out acts of murder in the west which uses the Obama 2008 campaign slogan, "Yes we can!"

al-Qaeda Beheads Woman in Yemen

Nasser Arrabyee:

Al Qaeda beheaded a woman for not being a good Muslim in the south eastern town of Rada'a, said local sources on Wednesday.

Al Qaeda fighters stormed the house of Mrs AlSharifa Amer, in Bani Zeyad, Rada'a, and slaughtered her and took the head and hang it in front of the house of Mohammed Mohammed Al Awbali. Mrs Amer is locally known as a popular doctor who treats sick people by herbs .

The sources said that Al Qaeda considered the woman as an enemy of Allah for being a "trickster".

A source close to the al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) told Xinhua by phone that the killed included three wanted leaders identified as Abdul-Monem al-Fadhani, Al-Khadr Em-Soudah and Ahmed Mu'eran Abu Ali, who was top AQAP leader in neighboring southeastern province of Shabwa....

Al-Fadhani, an al-Qaida military commander in Abyan, had escaped unharmed eight U.S. air raids over the past few months. He was one of the most wanted terrorists for his involvement in the USS Cole suicide bomb attack in Aden in October 2000 that killed 17 U.S. sailors, a senior Yemeni intelligence official told Xinhua.

To be honest, I've never heard of this al-Fadhani guy. Or, at least, the name isn't ringing any bells at this moment.

I'd keep an eye out on The Long War Journal on this one. Or, even better, Jane will chime in.

Thanks to Franz

A Quote Destined to Lead to Cosmic Justice ...

... or irony. Or karma. Or whatever it is when you say something like this and forget to knock on wood:

According to AQAP, top commander Abu Basir al-Wahishi "hasn't been targeted in any [drone] strikes and he enjoys good health."
Yeah, we'll just have to see how long that good health lasts.

Underwear Bomber Trial Begins

The trial of the Christmas Day 'underwear bomber', Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, begins in Detroit today. Abdulmutallab will act in his own defense, which proves the old adage about a lawyer representing himself has a fool for a client.

Earlier today
the judge denied the defense's motion to suppress the word 'bomb' from the trial. Lulz.

Since Abdulmutallab's guilt is certain, what many of us are looking for are details on the relationship between Abdulmutallab and Anwar al-Awlaki. I'll also be keen to know if Abdulmutallab had communicated with Samir Khan while he was a student in London.

That, and the laughs. Expect lots and lots of laughs.
