This past week, HSPI at George Washington University released the first issue brief of its Africa series (initiated last month) entitled “Boko Haram in Nigeria: No Easy Fix“. The first installment covers a topic I don’t know much about – Boko Haram in Nigeria. Omar Mahmood does an excellent job of concisely putting some needed details and perspective on Boko Haram, its origins, the underlying causes for its ascension and identifies some questions we might examine in the coming months. Additionally, Omar addresses some of the questions surrounding the group’s links to al Qaeda and its newest manifestation Ansaru. Harakat Al-Shabaab Al Mujahideen intelligence teams have retrieved some very valuable documents from the office of the apostate Somali president inside the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu. The documents contain highly confidential information, including detailed intelligence reports, internal memos, planned operational details and other classified material.

Some of the documents contain letters received from an influential Arab regime instructing the apostate president to name certain individuals for specific posts within his government so as to facilitate better cooperation and sharing of intelligence between the two countries.

We will publish some of the documents on Twitter in the coming hours and the rest will be published when deemed appropriate Insha-Allaah.

I haven't seen this video, but do I really need to see it to understand the kind of animals we're dealing with here?

A man accused of being an informant has been beheaded by Islamist group Boko Haram. The incident was recorded in a video obtained Tuesday in which the victim accused of being an informant appears to be beheaded on camera.

The clip has been distributed to Nigerian journalists in the country's north in recent days through intermediaries....

Sources familiar with Boko Haram say it was handed out in this manner because Nigerian authorities have been blocking the group's videos from being uploaded to YouTube.

Omar Hammami, one of the most notorious Americans to join an Al Qaeda affiliate, is already on the FBI’s most-wanted terrorist list. Now, he’s accused of a different sort of crime — plagiarizing his rap lyrics.

Hammami, who now goes by the name Abu Mansour al-Amriki (The American), released a series of rap songs over the past few years that are now being attributed to another American-born Islamic extremist. And the accusations are apparently coming from his former best buds at Al Shabab, the terrorist organization that helped launch Hammami to international fame.

In a document acquired by Wired.com, an alleged former colleague named Abu Hamza Al-Muhajir, calls Abu Mansour out on his “Nasheeds,” or Islamic vocal music.

“The Jihadi rap Nasheeds, ‘send me a cruise’ and ‘make Jihad with me’, that are often erroneously attributed to Abu Mansour are the work of another Muhajir — another American Mujahid,” Al-Muhajir claims in the 17-page PDF. “But, of course, Abu Mansour would never say otherwise since the Nasheeds ‘perfect’ and complement his projected self-image.”

His brother's heart-wrenching fate is due to be sealed within the next 20 something hours, in the war-torn Somalia.

So as the clock slowly ticks towards midnight Thursday, he will have to keep checking social networks to know whether or not the Al Shabaab terror group makes good its threat to execute his elder brother, Edward Mule and registration clerk Fredrick Irungu.

"It is very sad. It is hard on my mother because of the pain of losing a child. It is hard on my sister, his wife, my father and me. We just want to talk to him again. All I think of is Mule," says Yesse.[More...]

They have since opened a new Twitter account - @HSMPRESS1. I don't see anything on it regarding these hostages and most likely they are careful not to do so. There is also another Twitter account here, but most likely a supporter and not a spokesperson for al-Shabaab.

Tomorrow will tell the tale, sigh. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the hostages.

Omar Hamammi is so lonely, he spends most if his time hanging with J.M. Berger of Intelwire on twitter. We're not sure if that says anything about Berger's fascination with Godzilla but here.

Today, Omar Hamami -- better known as Abu Mansoor al-Amriki or "the American" -- has split from the insurgents, who want to kill him. He cuts a forlorn figure: homesick, stuck somewhere in Somalia, and telling anyone who will listen about his apparently doomed career path.

Twitter yawns over TOS violation as they did when Al Shabaab, aka @HSMPress, threatened to kill French hostage Denis Allex if France attempted to rescue him. He died and Al Shabaab tweeted several images of a French commando who was killed in the failed hostage rescue operation.

I suppose we should start calling Twitter JihadTweet or JihadTwitter or TwitterJihad, much like we call Google's YouTube JihadTube.

Forward: I didn't know the French military knew how to go in that direction:

French troops advance on Islamist rebels in northern Mali

French troops in armored vehicles and machine gun-mounted pickups moved northward Wednesday to bolster Malian army units fighting Islamist guerrillas entrenched in the beleaguered town of Diably.

The troop movements, recorded by journalists on the scene, set the stage for what seemed likely to be French troops’ first major engagement on the ground since President Francois Hollande ordered a major military intervention in Mali six days ago. Some reports said French special forces advisers were already in the city battling alongside the Malian soldiers.

France has reported two commandos and the hostage, Dennis Allex, were killed during the rescue attempt. Not wanting to take credit for killing the hostage during the rescue, al-Shabaab is now claiming they killed Alexx after and are blaming the French for his death.

The African Taliban's Twitter account put out the following 'press release' in a "'TwitLonger'. Twitter has become al-Shabaab's only means of communicating. You could say the Jawa Report is mainly responsible for that.

Anyway, here is part of the press release minus the Allah this and Allah that

The Verdict:

The death of the two French soldiers pales into insignificance besides the dozens of Muslim civilians senselessly killed by the French forces during the operation. Avenging the deaths of these civilians and taking into consideration France’s increasing persecution of Muslims around the world, its oppressive anti-Islam policies at home, French military operations in the war against Islamic Shari’ah in Afghanistan and, most recently, in Mali, and its continued economic, political and military assistance towards the African invaders in Muslim lands, Harakat Al-Shabaab Al Mujahideen has reached a unanimous decision to execute the French intelligence officer, Dennis Allex .

With the rescue attempt, France has voluntarily signed Allex’s death warrant. Following the failed operation, Le Drian, aware that execution is the natural corollary of treachery, announced that the punishment had already been meted out, despite the fact that Allex was at the time alive and safe in another safe house.

Saturday’s botched rescue operation was an abysmal failure; both in terms of intelligence and the ground operation. The French forces, driven by false intelligence reports from the ground, landed a few kilometers away from the town of Bulo-Marer and headed towards their designated location, killing all the villagers that crossed their path. The villagers, including an elderly woman, were later found some with their throats slit and others with bullets riddle all over their bodies. But before the French forces could reach their destination, the Mujahideen in Bulo-Marer were alerted by HSM intelligence teams who had information of the French movements.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Dennis Allex. Also, the commandos killed in the operation. One such commando has his images on the African Taliban's Twitter account:

Yeah, actually I'm all for France's war of choice in Mali. They are fighting Taliban-like, al-Qaeda sympathizing elements in the country. So, killing as many of them as possible is a good thing.

But don't you find it, I don't know, ironical that when France intervenes in the internal affairs of a country that none of the usual suspects come out and protest?

On Friday, France sent fighter jets and special forces across the vast desert north of Mali, reversing an eight-month-long stalemate between the former French colony and the fundamentalist rebels who overran Mali's north last year.

French forces had focused on regaining control of Konna, which had fallen into rebel hands last week. French and Malian officials have described this small town in central Mali as a strategic gateway for a possible rebel attack on Bamako.

Over the weekend, fighter jets from France attacked targets deep in northern territories controlled by Islamist groups, notably the large city of Gao near the front. The French also targeted sites along the border with Mauritania, as well as Kidal, a remote trading post near Algeria.

The real question, though, is whether the French tactics will work? Whether limited French airstrikes will be enough?

The African Taliban, have held Allex since 2009

A French soldier was killed and another was captured in a failed French commando raid on Saturday to rescue French hostage Denis Allex, who is also believed to have died in the operation, according to the French Defence Ministry.

The Islamist captors of a French military agent killed him during a French commando raid in Somalia, the French Defence Ministry said Saturday. One French soldier and 17 Islamists were also killed in the fighting.

Gen. Martin Klotz, a spokesman for the ministry, declined to provide details of the overnight operation aimed at rescuing secret service agent Denis Allex - the code-name for the man who was kidnapped by the militant Islamist group al-Shabaab in Mogadishu, the capital, in 2009.

His Somali captors, however, claim they are holding Allex alive and said they had a new captive, a French commando wounded in the fighting.

"(Denis) Allex still remains safe and far from the location of the battle," al-Shabaab said in a news release. "As a response to this botched rescue operation by the French forces, (the Shabaab) assures the French people that it will give its final verdict regarding the fate of Denis Allex within two days."

Ethiopia's security and intelligence agency announced 15 members of an East African terrorist cell affiliated with al-Qaida [al-Shabaab..ed] have been arrested.

Military training manuals, weapons and videotapes pertinent to jihad, or religious war, were also discovered in the arrests Wednesday, a government statement on the news website AllAfrica said.

The terrorist group released a full translation in English via its HMS Press Office here on Twitlonger.

The series of video releases - one in March when the Kuffar were preparing to invade the Islamic Administrations in Lower Shabeelle region and another in October just after the Kenyans had invaded the port city of Kismayo, in Lower Jubba region - were intended to serve a broader purpose. Hence, the timing of the releases and the convergence of the entire East African nations upon the Mujahideen were not entirely coincidental occurrences but a calculated attempt to draw attention to the alleged voices of dissent within the ranks of the Mujahideen at a time when they were most likely to be under pressure from their enemies so as to cultivate the destructive seeds of disunity. But Allah is the best disposer of all affairs; the seeds failed to germinate ‘and the evil plot encompasses only him who makes it.’

The gist of it being that Omar Hammami is a traitor, a spy or both. Sewing "fitna" or conflict among the Mujahideen. That despite efforts to "counsel" Omar that he has refused.

The thought crimes listed in the statement would carry a penalty of death under the hard line Islamist interpretation of Sharia used by al-Shabaab. although it does not specify any punishment nor read very harshly like your typical Sharia death warrant.

We've no word on Hammami's fate.

Little twitter spat there. I've that and one other claim he's alive. The twitter feed makes the claim that Shabaab will kill Omar and blame it on the US and Zionist forces in a false flag operation.

Well the narrative seems right anyway.

Al-Shabaab plans to strike the Dutch Parliament, after the country’s legislators abolished blasphemy.

Announcing the decision last Friday, Sheikh Fuád Mohamed Khalaf Shongole, the Chief propagandist of the radical Islamist group in Somalia, warned that the consequences of the legislator’s decision will be major.

He was reacting to a recent decision by the Dutch Parliament that insulting God will no longer be a crime in the Netherlands, revoking a decades-old blasphemy law from the statute books.

“Nobody can portray the figure of Allah (God),” said Sheikh Shongole through the media supporting his movement. “We are going to respond to such decision.”

Authorities in the UK have confirmed that they are investigating a charity said to have ties to the group. The charity has denied that it is secretly funding Boko Haram:

The UK Charity Commission (CC) has confirmed, for the first time, that it is talking to different departments, regarding allegations that Al Muntada Al Islami Trust is providing financial support to the Boko Haram group.

“We confirm we have been contacted by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Metropolitan Police (MP) in relation to this matter,” the CC spokesperson told Ahram Online.

The emir of Boko Haram, the Nigerian terror group that has ties to al Qaeda, has praised the global jihadist organization, and said he and his fighters support jihad in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, Chechnya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia, Algeria, Libya, and Mali.

A Kenyan radical Islamist cleric has been killed in a drive-by shooting in the city of Mombasa.

Aboud Rogo Mohammed was on US and UN sanction lists for allegedly supporting Somalia's al-Shabab militants.

Gunmen shot dead a well-known comedian known for poking fun at Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabab insurgents in the Somali capital Mogadishu, officials and colleagues said Wednesday.

Abdi Jeylani Malaq Marshale, in his late thirties or early forties, was killed late Tuesday, minutes after leaving Kulmiye radio station, where he worked as drama producer and performer.

"Two men shot and seriously injured Marshale... the comedian was later pronounced dead," said police lieutenant Mohamed Gaal, adding that "unfortunately the assailants escaped."

The United States offers millions for information leading to the capture of the world's most wanted terrorists.A Somali militant group has purportedly countered with an offer of camels for U.S. officials.Al-Shabaab has placed a bounty of 10 camels for President Barack Obama and two camels for information on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.An audio statement posted on jihadist websites purportedly from Al-Shabaab jeered news that the United States is offering millions of dollars for information on seven key members of al-Shabaab through its Rewards for Justice program.The man on the audio claimed to be Fuad Mohamed Khalaf, considered by the State Department to be Al-Shabaab's leading fundraiser. The United States has offered $5 million for information of his whereabouts."Whoever brings the mujahidin information about the whereabouts of infidel Obama and the lady of Bill Clinton, the woman named Hillary Clinton, I will give a reward,"

In case you're wondering I did some camel research and a good camel goes for about 3 to 7 thousand US dollars, even more if it has a machine gun mounted on it. Or was that a Toyota? Whatever. Making the offer somewhere between 30 and 70k depending on the quality of the camels, camel trim level and installed camel options.

Christof Putzel was able to speak with Abu Mansuur al-Amriiki this past weekend. Christof sent files to Omar that contained questions Omar sent back recorded answers to those questions.

In the interview Omar defends al-Shabaab's Taliban like brutality against the Somalis calling Sharia swift and merciful.

I've placed an embed of the video below the fold. The interview is audio only, there are no images with which to verify Omar's location.

The interview ends with African Union Troops approaching and Omar's final message to Christof was typically American. "Houston, we Have a problem." (See video below at around 7:20.) He says he has three wives and five children in Somalia and he hopes that if he is killed his father can find them and bring them to America to care for them.

Ironic that in the end he is hunted by those he purports to fight for and asking his family and America to pass along his last words and to care for his family. That says a lot about al-Shabaab, no?

I hope that for his mother and father's sake he is not killed but captured by the African union troops. But Omar seems determined to go out in a last futile gesture of stupidity. Dying for Allah is one thing, but dying for al-Shabaab murders wrapped in a false cloak of Islamic piety is another.

Note the Youtube account associated with Omar Hamammi aka Abu Mansuur al-Amriiki yesterday linked this photo of Omar holding a laptop displaying the banner page for his autobiography.

The assumption being that this is proof of life. The photo was first posted to Facebook, however the Facebook account to which the photo was uploaded was flagged down (sweet! whomever you are) forcing the user known on Twitter as Abu M to update the Youtube account associated with his last known video with this link to the original .jpeg.

Downloading that file and checking the metadata associated with the file we find the make and model of the camera along with the date taken of 07/17/2011.

#FAIL!

So it basically proves Omar was alive almost a year ago. And who said taking down web pages isn't useful?

If you are a young American male considering joining a foreign terrorist organization in general and al-Shabaab in Somalia in particular, I highly recommend you to read Omar Hammami’s autobiography (available on the Internet, but not yet on Kindle). Unfortunately for Hammami, he arrived in Somalia before the release of al Qaeda’s (Mis) Adventures in Horn of Africa. Had he waited until after the summer of 2007, Hammami could have read al Qaeda’s primary source documents from 1992-1994 and diverted his plan. Al Qaeda’s internal documents ’92-’94 read just like Hammami’s bio from 2012 – tales of suffering, betrayal and defeat. (For some highlights from the 90’s AQ documents, see this post) The irony is that Bin Laden learned from these Somalia pitfalls of the 90’s and I’m certain they influenced his decision to block a Shabaab-AQ merger as debated in this new Abottabad document released this month. (See SOCOM-2012-0000006-HT)

In follow up to yesterday’s post on Fazul-Hammami connections, I present 6 reasons for why joining al-Shabaab or any extremist group in Somalia appears to be a particularly bad idea; above the obvious point that joining a terrorist group in general is never a good idea. So here it goes:

#1 – Betrayal

This reason more than any other should be the biggest deterrent for those considering joining al-Shabaab. If malaria, dehydration, starvation, rival clans or foreign armies don’t kill you, other members of Shabaab will.

"If I could touch him for five minutes, I would be thrilled," Debra Hammami of Daphne, Ala. said of her son Omar who this week published a 127-page account of his road to terrorism from a small town in the American South.

I found it using the same Youtube account where he posted that he was in fear of his life by members of al-Shabaab.

In the Name of Allaah the Most Beneficent the Most Mericful. Indeed all praises are due to the Lord of the Worlds and may He send peace, blessings, and salaah upon His Messenger and upon his family and companions, as well as those who follow his guidance until the Day of Judgment.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the environment in the lands of Jihaad, I decided now is as good a time as any to release the first part of my auto-biography. Although nothing special, I thought my addition to the Jihaadi library could at least provide some benefit. I find the advice of Abu Muscab as-Suuri1 that we should document our history extremely important for a number of reasons: 1) events are happening more rapidly in the age of Globalization, 2) the war of narratives has become even more important than the war of navies, apalms, and knives, 3) with the internet, recording events and spreading reports of them has become extremely easy (so we should take whatever we can get).

Due to the necessity of security the first part of this auto-biography only reaches up to my affiliation with Xarakah ash-Shabaab al-Mujaahidiin. I'm sure everyone can understand the need for such measures. But in all reality the lands of Jihaad are all similar and history inevitably repeats itself, so I would imagine that the following information is enough of a glimpse into reality to provide the foundations for future insight.

Back to Omar's Autobiography, a self indulgent record of second grade recess. Another time, Brandon, who was supposed to be my friend, decided to kick me in the nose with his cowboy boots. I never understood why he did that.

It says little about his status except that he's alive, very bored and apparently he's now allowed to access the internet. Although publishing this seems like he may have his doubts about how long this will be the case.

If you can get past the blow by blow account of Grade School, Jr. High and dropping out of college he eventually talks about Jihad and has a Q&A session in which he muses on the similarities between he and the late Steve Jobs. I shit you not.

It appears Hamammi has been in communication with Christof Putzel of Current TV who also blogs at Huffpo for some time. Jawa Report intercepted the upload as Hamammi added a link to the description on his last known Youtube channel today.

Once considered a key figure of Al Shabaab’s leadership, posting videos on YouTube of leading battles in the field and recruiting other Muslim westerners to join him in Somalia, Hammami appears to have fallen out of favor with Al Shabaab and is currently alone in hiding. In March, he posted a video in which he described his fears that Al Shabaab may plan to kill him.

Hammami has been indicted on terrorism charges and is wanted by the FBI.

A formal investigation is just underway and HSM is still attempting to verify the authenticity as well as the motivations behind the video.

Why didn't the HSM twitter feed deny the recent rumors that al-Amriiki was slaughtered? Isn't their silence a bit strange? Or maybe it was too much to write a sentence on an unofficial platform like Twitter?

Bamako, Mali (CNN) -- Elderly men were keeping watch Saturday over Timbuktu's main library after Islamists burned a tomb listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The attacks Friday were blamed on Ansar Dine, a militant group that seeks to impose strict Sharia law.

"They attacked the grave, broke the doors and windows and ripped and burned pieces of white clothing that surrounded the tomb of the saint in front of everyone," said Haidara, who is from the central Mali city. "With their attack, the militants touched the heart of Timbuktu. They picked Friday because they know many people visit the shrines on this day."

Earlier today a supposed statement by al-Shabaab was put out stating Hammimi was alive and well and stuff. But wait, was it really from al-Shabaab?

The problem with the AP report is that Somalimemo.net, the website that released the statement, is not an official Shabaab website. Abdulkadir M. Wa'ays, a former United Nations researcher and a leading authority on Shabaab who is based in Belgium, told The Long War Journal the following:

I can confirm to you that al-Shabaab had not issued any official statement on the matter as yet and that the AP is just using as [an official] Shabaab statement an opinion piece published by a pro-Shabaab Somali language website Somalimemo.net, which is not, BTW, al-Shabaab's official website as reported by the AP.[ More...]

The least you can do is let Omar Hammimi's father Shafik know the status of his allegedly beheaded traitor of a son.

DAPHNE, Alabama -- Shafik Hammami has no special insights into the fate of the son he lost contact with years ago. He and his wife, like the rest of Alabama, await confirmation of reports in Somalia that Omar Hammami has been betrayed by the terrorist organization he joined in 2006.

“I have not heard anything other than what I’ve read in the newspaper,” Shafik Hammami said this afternoon from his home in Daphne. “We are like anyone else. We haven’t had any confirmation.”

...U.S. officials have been unable to confirm those reports, though, and the elder Hammami said he has had no contact with the government. The last few weeks have been particularly difficult for the family, he said.
