Tiny Minority of Oppressed Muslims Stone Women to Death
Women in parts of Syria under "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) control are being subjected to harsh and discriminatory treatment which has included public stoning, al-Raqa residents told Al-Shorfa.The real war on something something.
Al-Raqa residents were startled July 19th by the sound of loudspeakers in mosques and atop vehicles calling on residents to head to the municipal stadium to participate in the stoning of a woman who was said to have committed adultery, said Mahmoud al-Amin, a retired teacher.
"People came out of their homes to see what was going on and were astonished to see dozens of ISIL elements surrounding a square near the municipal stadium and the popular market," he said.
A man with a foreign accent read the charges and the order issued by the group's "sharia committee" through a loudspeaker, al-Amin told Al-Shorfa.
"ISIL elements tried to persuade citizens to participate in the stoning but no one did, so they carried out the sentence themselves," al-Amin said, adding that local residents were prohibited from filming the incident or even holding their mobile phones in their hands.
The woman's body remained under the stones until the next day, when she was moved to an unknown location, he added.
Two days before, ISIL stoned another woman to death in a public market in the city of al-Tabqa in al-Raqa province on charges of "adultery", the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
