Taliban Confirms it Will Seek to Kidnap More Soldiers

It's almost like rewarding people for bad behavior leads to more of that behavior, not less. Who could have predicted that?

A Taliban commander close to the negotiations over the release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl told TIME by telephone Thursday that the deal made to secure Bergdahl’s release has made it more appealing for fighters to capture American soldiers and other high-value targets.

“It’s better to kidnap one person like Bergdahl than kidnapping hundreds of useless people,” the commander said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media. “It has encouraged our people. Now everybody will work hard to capture such an important bird.”

The glass half full view of this? The Taliban really do suck at pretty much everything, especially taking POWs. Hell, they're bad at killing our guys. We've been in Afghanistan for 12+ years now and we've lost 2300 men. Which is tragic, yes, but put that into historical context and you realize that our enemies there just aren't that good. To put that into context, that's about as many men that were KIA at Pearl Harbor ... in a single day.

The problem with this isn't that they will succeed in kidnapping more of our military men and women, it's that they might try. Which means more attacks, and more dead soldiers. In a war we've already decided to quit fighting.

Now that's tragic.
