Pakistan Lawyer Murdered For Defending Accused Blasphemer
This is what a lot of people don't understand about Sharia Law. There is no concept of due process. There is a presumption of guilt until the accused can prove innocence. But non-Muslims, and sometimes Muslims accused of blasphemy, receive no opportunity to prove their innocence. They are denied legal counsel and, therefore, can not receive a fair trial.
Gunmen posing as clients shot dead a prominent human rights lawyer defending a professor accused of blasphemy, officials said Thursday.
Wednesday's killing of Rashid Rehman in the southern city Multan of was the first time a lawyer has been killed for taking on a blasphemy case, police said.
Rehman had been representing Junaid Hafeez, a lecturer in English accused by hardline student groups of making blasphemous remarks against the Prophet Mohammed in March last year.
Hafeez had been in prison without being able to find a lawyer until Rehman agreed to represent him in February.
Blasphemy carries the death penalty in Pakistan. The accused are often lynched or languish for years in jail without trial because lawyers are too afraid to defend them. [...]
On Thursday morning, an unsigned pamphlet was distributed in Multan saying Rehman met his "rightful end" for trying to "save someone who disrespected the Prophet Mohammed". (Source)
This sad story reminds me of another case from 2009. A wealthy Muslim lawyer purchased a "maid" (which is the politically correct term for "slave" in some Islamic societies). Over the next few months, the 12-year-old "maid" was beaten, raped and tortured by the lawyer and his family.
In January 2010, the girl died from injuries. When the case went to trial, Muslim lawyers protested the charges against her killer. The lawyers threatened to "burn alive" anyone who took the case to prosecute. Eventually, the girl's killer was acquitted.
This case illustrates that radical Muslims are not poor and impoverished some apologists claim. These are educated, professional men. Even being a part of legal system, these men oppose fair trials for those accused of certain crimes.
That is the nature of Sharia Law. This is why we must never allow it in our civilized world.
