Two Syrian Nationals Apprehended while trying to enter U.S. Illegally
Delaware River – Two Syrian nationals are in federal custody after attempting to unlawfully enter the United States by jumping from a shipping vessel Tuesday evening near the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Both men were apprehended following a search effort by Pennsville Police, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Cherry Hill, which falls under the HSI Newark field office, as well as HSI Wilmington, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the New Jersey State Police.
Pennsville police apprehended one crew member shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday 5/7/14 after he was observed on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property near Kilcohook allegedly attempting to break into a construction vehicle. He is identified as Omar Khalef (M/18) of Syria. The second crew member was apprehended while still in the Delaware River
