Israel Attacks Syrian Air Base?

Ok, somebody attacked an anti-aircraft battery at a Syrian air base this morning. If Israel did it, they're being tight lipped about their involvement. Reports from Arab media are that the attack came from the sea, but the same reports claim that Israeli fighters were seen over Lebanon en route, so make of that what you will. These are Arab media reports, so expect a high level of confusion wrapped in propaganda wrapped in another layer of lies.

But, still, Israel isn't denying involvement .... yet. And if it was Israel, then what does it mean for the war effort overall? The Israelis are between a rock and a hard place here. They hate Assad, who supports both Hezbollah and as a conduit for Iranian money to Hamas, but Assad at least is predictable. And the rebels? Well, we know how that is working out.

So, what's the play here? This may simply be Israel trying to level the playing field a bit. Over the past two months momentum has shifted away from the rebels towards Assad. Maybe Israel just wants to help the rebels drag this thing on for a bit longer?

Then again, they may have weighed both sides and decided the rebels were the lesser of two evils here. JPost:

A Syrian air defense base near the port city of Latakia was completely destroyed on Thursday morning in a missile attack from the sea, Arab media reported.

According to reports emanating from the rebels seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad, a large explosion occurred near the army base in Latakia on Wednesday night. Witness posted on Twitter that the explosion happened near coastal city Jableh, 30 kilometers south of Latakia, a stronghold of Assad's Alawites.

We'll try to update if and when there's more to know.
