Boston Marathon Atrocity Image

I thought this picture really summed up the best and worst of that cowardly act of terrorism committed in Boston. It shows the best in people, those heroically rushing into potential danger to help others, and it shows the worst - the terrible, gruesome results endured by the innocent victims.

The hero:

Peace activist Carlos Arredondo heroically went to the aid of horrifically injured victims of the Boston marathon explosions.

The cowboy-hat wearing bystander threw himself into the scene pulling debris away to allow emergency crews access just seconds after two bombs exploded at the finish of the course. [...]

In one of the most harrowing images from the atrocity, Mr Arredondo can be seen tending to an injured man whose legs were both blown off by the force of the blast.

He apparently pinched off the exposed femoral artery of the ashen-faced young man, who retained consciousness during the appalling ordeal, as he is escorted from the scene on a wheelchair.

The victim:

Jeff Bauman Jr. sustained extensive damage to both of his legs during the Boston Marathon terror attack Monday afternoon, but he survived the explosion and is in stable condition, according to his father.

The 24-year-old had to have both of his legs amputated, but his father, Jeff Bauman Sr., wrote on Facebook that his son is going to pull through, despite the brutal wounds he sustained.

"Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers; they did help greatly. Unfortunately, my son was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," Bauman wrote in a Tuesday-morning Facebook post. "He had to have both lower limbs removed due to the excessive vascular and bone damage. ... He went back into surgery last night at midnight for exploratory due to fluid in his abdomen. He came out at 2:30, and doctors informed us he was doing better."
