Al Qaeda Support Rally in Central Russia

Here's an image of "the al Qaeda flag" in Kazan, Russia as reported by the Kavkaz Center. The important thing to remember about this is that Kazan is nowhere near the Caucuses mountains, home to "Islamic Emirate of the Caucuses".

Kazan is a major Russian city.

The bad news is that this is an indication that support for radical Islam is not a regionally limited phenomenon in Russia. The good news is that Vladimir Putin doesn't seem to be the type of quasi-dictator who will put up with this kind of thing for very long.

But the fact that the image is from Kazan and not Grozny is a surprise. Perhaps this will send a signal to Moscow that they can no longer expect to be able to feed radical Islamism with one hand when it is directed against the US and not expect it to bite the other hand domestically.

Thanks to 44.
