US Chopper Shot Down
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- A military helicopter crashed in eastern Afghanistan, killing 31 U.S. special operation troops and seven Afghan commandos, the country's president said Saturday. An American official said it was apparently shot down, in the deadliest single incident for American forces in the decade-long war.First, our thanks and prayers to all those who served us so well. Please pray for their families in this most difficult of times.
The Taliban claimed they downed the helicopter with rocket fire while it was taking part in a raid on a house where insurgents were gathered in the province of Wardak late Friday. It said wreckage of the craft was strewn at the scene.
NATO confirmed the overnight crash took place and that there "was enemy activity in the area." But it said it was still investigating the cause and conducting a recovery operation at the site. It did not release details or casualty figures.
Now I find myself wondering what target they were after, Zawahiri?
Second. The Taliban have never demonstrated this capability in the last 10 years of this conflict. Only very a few groups demonstrated this capability in Iraq and not very effectively.
Now the question is: who in the world would have an interest in supplying the Taliban with such good surface to air armaments?
If you think about it there is only one answer. Pakistani intelligence who were humiliated by the death of UBL have every motivation to prevent another similar operation.
UPDATE by SH: Members of Seal Team 6 reportedly killed in the crash. ISI taking revenge? and, why the hell were this Seal Team even named? Gawd, the fecking leaking mouths of this administration p*sses me off!
WASHINGTON -- The Associated Press has learned that more than 20 Navy SEALs from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden were among those lost in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.Sigh...Our thoughts and prayers are with all families who lost their loved ones..
Update by Howie: Reports are pointing toward a lucky RPG shot? Possibly as it was leaving? That would be better than say a shoulder fired missile....
