Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese political prisoner, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Mr. Liu was barred by the Chinese government from attending the ceremony.

In case you were wondering who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, the White House issued this statement from President Obama about Mr. Liu's Nobel Peace Prize:

One year ago, I was humbled to receive the Nobel Peace Prize -- an award that speaks to our highest aspirations, and that has been claimed by giants of history and courageous advocates who have sacrificed for freedom and justice.

And again, in case you missed it the first time, Obama closed with:

I regret that Mr. Liu and his wife were denied the opportunity to attend the ceremony that Michelle and I attended last year.

President Obama also added that he & Michelle, just as they did last year when they won the Nobel Peace Prize, would be more than happy to accept and spend Mr. Liu's monetary award.
