(UK) The British National Health Service (NHS) has denied life-extending treatment to kidney cancer patients because the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) determined the patients were non-exceptional. A definition of exceptionality hasn't been reported.

Arguably, 'exceptionality' is a euphemism for cost.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Authorities in southern Arizona have found a deputy wounded in a shootout with suspected drug smugglers after a frantic hour-long desert search.

Pinal County sheriff's Lt. Tamatha Villar says the deputy suffered a superficial wound to his abdomen after being shot with an AK-47 assault rifle Friday afternoon. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Casa Grande, about 40 miles south of Phoenix.

I certainly hope they catch these nice folks who crossed the border illegally and tried to murder this deputy doing his duty.

CBS Two United States citizens residing in Brooklyn, N.Y., have been charged with trying to aid Al Qaeda terrorists. According to the indictment obtained by CBS News, the men, Wesam El-Hanafi, 33, and Sabirhan Hasanoff, 34, are charged with one count of "conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization."

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Also according to the indictment, "the defendants would and did agree to provide al Qaeda with, among other things, computer advice and assistance, services, and currency, knowing that al Qaeda had engaged and was engaging in terrorist activity[.]"

(AlertNet) - The U.N. food aid agency says a lack of funds is forcing it to cut rations for people driven from their homes by fighting in northern Yemen, endangering a fragile ceasefire between rebels and the government.

From May, the World Food Programme (WFP) will reduce food assistance for 270,000 displaced people by half until donors provide more money or the funds run out altogether, the organisation's Yemen director Gian Carlo Cirri said on Friday..."There has been a lot of talk within the international community about helping Yemen, but very little money," Cirri said. "In funding humanitarian operations, you are buying stability at a relatively cheap price."

The latest cut means food aid recipients will receive 1,040 kilocalories per person per day - half of what is needed for a healthy life.

DENVER — A religious watchdog group says a cross and religious motto on the emblem of an Army hospital in Colorado violate the constitutional requirement for separation of church and state and should be removed.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation asked the Army this week to change the emblem of Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson, outside Colorado Springs.

The emblem says “Pro deo et humanitate” or “For God and humanity.”

Wollman said the cross, which has a pointed base, is both an emblem of mercy and a symbol dating to the Middle Ages, when pilgrims carried a cross with a spiked base to mark the site of a camp.

Mikey Weinstein, president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said that’s a reference to the Crusades and could embolden U.S. enemies who want to portray the war on terror as a Christian war on Islam.

Readers may recall the report from a couple weeks ago regarding the Green Party adopting an Anti-Macho Manifesto which was driven, of course, by feminist leadership in the party. Arguably, the intent is to hyper-estrogenize or de-testosteronize the males in society. Simply put, the manifesto outlines a campaign to make men less manly. Consequently, it's hard to dispute the contention that radical feminists are really out to change biology.

Curiously folding into the same theme is a new report which attempts to convince men not to be manly in the boudoir. Specifically, a noted female psychologist, Dr. Pam Spurr, asserts that men shouldn't strive to be long-lasting during sexual episodes since women don't want it. Dr. Spurr states that women won't admit it but their preference is for quick sex, a minute of less would likely be ideal. According to Dr. Spurr:

Women are shy of admitting that short sex sessions actually suit them, because they fear it means they have a low sex drive. But the truth is that quick sex sessions aren't always a curse. For a great many women they are actually a blessing.

U.S. Flags Salute Wounded Warrior Athletes

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2010 – The American flags raised over five military installations don’t look any different from the one raised over the U.S. Capitol on any given day, but there is one distinct difference.

These flags will bear the well-wishes of servicemembers stationed around the world for injured soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines and veterans competing in the inaugural Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., next month.

With the help of the Defense Media Activity and the USO, five American flags found their way to Afghanistan, Germany, Hawaii, Iraq and South Korea, where they were raised over military points of interest. One flew above the USS Arizona in Hawaii, and another over Korea’s demilitarized zone. A third was raised above Germany’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Flags flew over Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, and Joint Base Balad, Iraq, as well.

Each flag-raising was filmed and will be broadcast with special messages from deployed servicemembers during the Warrior Games opening ceremonies.

For one recipient of a flag, what began as a routine assignment to organize and film the flag-raising turned into much more, especially after he called the Landstuhl public affairs office and explained the project.

“Their response was overwhelming,” said Air Force Tech. Sgt. Leigh Bellinger, who serves with Detachment 4, Air Force News Agency, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

The public affairs team in Germany organized a joint-service detail to raise and lower the flag. The detail practiced for more than an hour the day before the actual flag-raising, Bellinger said.

“It was the afternoon of the actual ceremony that it all hit home,” he said. “As I stood in front of those soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen talking about the flag and the Warrior Games, it hit me -- the importance of what we were doing. This was for our brothers and sisters taking part in the Warrior Games.”

Troops injured in overseas combat zones receive treatment at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center before transport to stateside medical facilities. Landstuhl, therefore, “has special significance for every single wounded warrior taking part in the games,” Bellinger said. “More than likely, they passed through on their way back home from Iraq or Afghanistan.”

Army Staff Sgt. Clinton Carroll, the operations noncommissioned officer in charge for American Forces Network Afghanistan, said the request to fly an American flag wasn’t so unusual.

“Because we are in a combat zone, we are asked to fly lots of American flags for different reasons,” he said. “Each of them has meaning and importance for someone we don’t usually know. This one is unique, because it’s flown specifically for our brothers and sisters in arms and in honor of the sacrifice they have made, some of them here in Afghanistan.”

Carroll asked soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division if they’d be willing to participate in the ceremony to raise this special flag.

“Not only did they want to do it, but because they are the 82nd, they wanted to do it big,” Carroll said. “They had no issue finding servicemembers to help out with the flag raising … because of the significance of the event. They also wanted to have a formation spelling out ‘USO’ to thank everyone for their dedication to the Warrior Games.”

Carroll had a message for the athletes participating in the Warrior Games, as well.

“I would say to them, regardless of what branch of service they are in, they are heroes to us all,” he said. “I want to wish all the warriors good luck, but I want to especially say, ‘Go Army!’”

Bellinger offered the warrior athletes his best wishes, in the form of “a slow, sharp salute for all my brothers and sisters taking part.”

Nicholas Tovo, DMA’s Hawaii bureau chief, enlisted the help of two wounded warriors who will participate in the Warrior Games to raise the flag over the USS Arizona. Tovo offered a special thanks to everyone who made the flag-raising a success.

“I especially want to thank the servicemembers for participating and everything they have done, and will do, to support our country,” he said.

Once the five flags are back in the United States, members of the Rolling Thunder motorcyclist’s organization will transport them to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in time for the Warrior Games opening ceremonies, scheduled for May 10.

Rolling Thunder works to draw attention to prisoner-of-war and missing-in-action issues and veterans causes. The ride will begin May 5 at the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack in New York City, with stops at the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa., to honor all 9/11 victims.

The Warrior Games begin May 10 and continue through May 14.

NEW ORLEANS – A massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is even worse than believed and as the government grows concerned that the rig's operator is ill-equipped to contain it, officials are offering a military response to try to avert a massive environmental disaster along the ecologically fragile U.S. coastline.

Speaking Thursday on NBC's "Today" show, an executive for BP PLC, which operated the oil rig that exploded and sank last week, said the company would welcome help from the U.S. military.

Also it seems a bit odd, this is the worst accident with a drilling platform that I can recall. Drilling is inherently risky. Especially when establishing a new live well like this. The recent record of offshore drilling has been very safe.

But there are other risks.

Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud is now believed to have survived a U.S. missile strike earlier this year, but has lost clout within the militant network, a senior intelligence official said Thursday.

The revelation contradicts initial confidence among U.S. and Pakistani intelligence officials that the brash militant leader had been killed in a mid-January missile attack in the Waziristan stretch of the northwest tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.

The Taliban consistently denied Mehsud was killed, but declined to offer evidence he was alive, saying it would compromise his safety.

But Mehsud's power has lessened, and other Taliban commanders, such as Waliur Rehman, are now overshadowing him, the official said.

Also, it is claimed that he was the only person to survive the attack. Ansar al-Mujihadeen was quick to point out that it was a miracle and, I'm sure its coming if I know my akhi, Allah's divine will. I just threw up a little.

I have the DVR set to record every new episode of South Park. It recorded Episode 200, the first Mohammed one that got Zach's panties in a wad. It recorded tonight's episode 202.

But it didn't record last week, the one that Comedy Central had a bladder control problem with.

Did anyone else who records the show have this issue? I had to watch that online. We have Cox Cable, by the way, so I'm wondering if it was Comedy Central, or Cox.

What have you – the American Taxpayer – received for all this largess doled into the laps of these idiot gamblers? You have the worst economy since the great depression. You have over 22% of the population “under-employed”. You have plummeting home values. You have more tax. You have known tax cheats heading Treasury and the IRS.

Now Greece is going to go bankrupt, and guess who is going to bailout that government? The IMF gives money to Greece. 20% of the IMF’s funding comes from the US Taxpayer, so you – the American Taxpayer – are now sending $7 billion to the Greek government so it can pay its bills.

Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, France and the UK are in line for the same thing.

What can you do about it?

A group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers say wooden remains they have discovered on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey are the remains of Noah's Ark.

The group claims that carbon dating
proves the relics are 4,800 years old, meaning they date to around the same time the ark was said to be afloat. Mt. Ararat has long been suspected as the final resting place of the craft by evangelicals and literalists hoping to validate biblical stories.

Yeung Wing-Cheung, from the Noah's Ark Ministries International research team that made the discovery, said: "It's not 100 percent that it is Noah's Ark, but we think it is 99.9 percent that this is it."

There have been several reported discoveries of the remains of Noah's Ark over the years, most notably a find by archaeologist Ron Wyatt in 1987. At the time, the Turkish government officially declared a national park around his find, a boat-shaped object stretched across the mountains of Ararat.

The 26Sep.net, a Web site linked to Yemen's military and security service, identified the suicide bomber in Monday's attack on a convoy carrying the British Ambassador as Othman Ali al-Selwi, a 22-year-old student from the southern city of Taiz. No one but the bomber was killed, three passersby were slightly injured. There's a heck of a photo of Othman's head sitting on a curb though.

(Head of Central Security and presidential nephew) Yahya Saleh's newspaper, Naba News reports the suicide bomber studied in Britain for nearly two years on a scholarship awarded by the British embassy and returned to Yemen a few months ago. He had no overt extremist leanings his family said. Naba's sources theorize that he was radicalized in the UK or else the bombing was a reaction to a personal issue with the Embassy related to his studies.

Other sources say the 22-year old al Selwi was detained some time ago in a National Security prison in Sana'a and he paid regular visits to the National Security's headquarters in Sana'a upon his release.

This, though, is a ridiculous suggestion: WaPo: A statement by the Yemeni Embassy in Washington suggested that the attack may have been in retaliation for a Yemeni operation that killed two suspected al-Qaeda operatives in the western city of Hodeida on April 18.

If we recall, the two "al Qaeda operatives" killed were carrying IDs from the National Security and one was an agent of the Central Security.

An earlier attack on an official convoy targeted South Korean investigators in March 2009. They were in Yemen following the murder of three South Korean tourists. The route of the motorcade was disseminated to the so called al Qaeda by subverted elements within Yemen's security forces, Parliamentarians charged. No was was killed except the bomber in that attack.

Update: Yemen rounds up usual suspects, father confirms the bomber was recently released from jail:

Reuters, WaPo; Yemeni police arrested dozens of al Qaeda suspects in sweeps a day after a suicide bomber tried to kill Britain's ambassador to Yemen, security officials said Tuesday.

At the 22-year-old bomber's home near Sanaa, his father told Reuters that he condemned his son's actions and that he had tried to get him to marry and find a job, before the young man went missing around six weeks ago.

Othman Ali al-Sulwi, who wore an explosive belt when he threw himself at a convoy taking Ambassador Tim Torlot to work Monday, had spent two years in prison before being released at the start of this year, his father said.

Well, this explains a lot.

Sorry I'm kind of late to the party here, but regular readers know that we've been following Zach's antics for a long time and that we noted the threat he made against the South Park creators days before it hit the MSM. But because of my Dad's death I wasn't around for all the fun.

Continuing our examination into the Ohio Department of Homeland Security, our correspondent inside the department adds new details concerning its multicultural affairs director Omar Alomari. Last week we reported that Alomari had been fired from his faculty position from Columbus State Community College for violating the school's sexual harassment policy. Namely, he had been sleeping with his students while they were taking his classes. This would be none of our business if it weren't for the fact that Ohio Homeland Security director William Vedra continues to cite Alomari's academic career to defend them both against their critics.

Now our correspondent adds an important new detail to Alomari's "multicultural affairs" efforts:

One important sidebar to Omar's firing by Columbus State is that several years later he ended up suing his sexual harassment victim for defamation and emotional distress. This was after he lost his case against Columbus State before the state civil rights commission when he claimed he had been discriminated against for his religious and ethnic background. In the lawsuit Omar claimed that in reporting his illicit activities to the higher-ups, his victim had defamed him. He lost that case too, but it financially ruined his victim. She not only lost her marriage but had to spend a significant sum to defend herself against Omar's baseless charges.

I wish I could say that Omar's sexual harassment stopped there. Here in the office he treats the women that work here with contempt and regularly making sexually suggestive remarks. When two women complained about his behavior, it was quickly hushed up and the women were moved to another department with better paying jobs. Omar defended himself by saying that it was a misunderstanding over "Middle Eastern customs." A CAIR attorney immediately got involved on his behalf. Next he will demand that we dress in burqas to accommodate his religious beliefs.

No one knows why Bill Vedra decided to cover-up for Omar. He was hired by the previous administration and that was as good of an opportunity to get rid of him. I'm not the only one in our office outraged that our "multicultural affairs" director (or community engagement, whatever they are calling it today) is a serial sexual harasser.

Based on information provided to us by our correspondent, we contacted the Franklin County, Ohio Court of Common Pleas who confirmed the details of the case (99 CVC 01 00421). Omar Alomari's victim spent nearly two years defending herself against his baseless law suit (she eventually won a summary judgment). He claimed tortious interference with a contract/business relation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and defamation. He lost on all counts.

Our correspondent makes a fair point: is this the best they can do for a "multicultural affairs" director? The women's rights groups in Ohio should be in an uproar that he not only has his position at Ohio Homeland Security, but he continues to teach at several colleges and universities (Ohio State, Otterbein, Franklin) in the area after having been fired previously for sexual harassment. His bogus lawsuit and civil rights case demonstrates he believed it his right to sleep with his infidel students without consequence.

Since my Dad died shortly after we first broke the news that South Park's creators had been threatened by one of the guy's behind the Revolution Muslim website, I've been kind of out of the loop.

Not so far out of the loop that I didn't know that we've gotten virtually none of the credit for breaking the story, so that's a little irritating, but out of the loop nonetheless. Also that people over at George Mason University's MSU denied knowing the man who had made the threats -- even though many of their leaders are Facebook pals with him. How do you spell taqiyah?

Another thing, though, that caught my attention were the replies by Zach "Abu Talhah al Amrike" Chesser that he wasn't threatening Matt Stone and Trey Parker, he was only making the observation that they might be killed for blaspheming he-who-must-not-be named.

You know, warning them in Good Samaritan fashion and what not.

Let me just answer Zach's denials that he was threatening Stone and Parker with a few observations.

First, no one ever accused Zach of being brave. Instead of fighting for Allah, he is safe in suburban Washington, DC. He is a pussy. The kind of pussy who believes his job is inciting the believers (Quran 4:84) to violence, not to do that violence himself. Like Muhammad, Abu Hamza, bin Laden, and Hitler, Zach and people like him never personally kill any one. You don't have to worry about that.

But, I cannot let him get away with these denials that he was threatening Stone and Parker. He was.

Before he ever posted on Revolution Muslim he twittered the same sentiments and also posted on an Islamic Forum. I archived both of these threats knowing in advance that once this hit the media Zach would pull back and try to explain them away (just like his mentors Samir Khan and Yousef al Khattab once did).

First, the Twitter threat:

May Allah kill Matt Stone and Trey Parker and burn them in Hell for all eternity.

Sounds like a threat to me. Especially given the added context that the man making the statement once used an image of Osama bin Laden for the banner on his blog.

But, Zach might argue that he was only praying that God would kill Stone and Parker, not that he or any radical Islamist would actually carry out God's will by murdering them (like they did with Theo Van Gogh). No, he was just hoping an tornado would strike.

Okay, maybe. But then how do we explain Zach's threat posted over at the Ansar forum?

He starts the thread out with this title: "South Park Insults The Prophet Muhammad Salaa Allahu 'Alayhi Wa Salam In 200th Episode". He then posts a picture of the murdered Theo Van Gogh and asks the question, "Theo Van Gogh - Have Matt Stone And Trey Parker Forgotten This?"

Here's an image of that part of the original post.

Zach then quotes this news article about the South Park episode which had many people speculating would be canceled.

He then asks, "asks, "Where do they live?". Meaning where do Parker and Stone live.

And how do we know this is the same Zach Chesser who goes by the online name of "Abu Zacharia" and "Abu Talhah al-Amrike"? Here's how the post was signed:

If you don't then your family will be left to do all these things at a time when they should be mourning. It is a moral obligation you owe to those who will survive you.

I'll try and write some thank you notes over the next few days. If you helped by donating money and don't get something from me soon, please accept my apologies. Sometimes the notification of payments received gets diverted to my spam folder while other times it goes to my inbox -- all without any particular rhyme or reason.

RABAT (Reuters) - Morocco's government said on Monday it broke up a cell linked to al Qaeda that was planning assassinations and acts of sabotage, suggesting an undercurrent of Islamist militancy lives on in the north African country.

The group, which had 24 members, also recruited Moroccan citizens to send them to conflict areas including Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia, state news agency MAP cited the Interior Ministry as saying.

Four members had previously served jail terms for terrorism offences, according to the ministry.

It said the group's members would appear before a judge when the police investigation ends but did not clarify whether they had been formally charged.

The group's members "were preparing to carry out assassinations and acts of sabotage within the country, notably targeting the security services and foreign interests in Morocco," the ministry said in a statement carried by MAP.

(Harare, Zimbabwe) On Thursday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Harare for talks with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

Ahmadinejad was greeted with an 21-gun salute and a military flyover. Reportedly, trade agreements between the two nations are expected to be finalized and Ahmadinejad will open the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.

Most Zimbabweans have viewed the whole reciprocal invitation as a tasteless joke.

My father, the man I most loved and respected in the world, passed away last Friday -- one day after his 73rd birthday. He leaves behind 7 children, 19 grandchildren, & 5 great grandchildren.

My father served his country as a Marine. I always sensed a twinge of regret in his voice when he would explain to people that he was in the Corps just after Korea but too soon for Vietnam. His personal hero? Chesty Puller.

In addition to serving his country he also served his community in law enforcement for 35 years and in various positions in his church's lay hierarchy. He will be sorely missed.

Because of the unexpected expense of traveling halfway across the country with my wife and four kids, I'm asking friends, fans, and readers if they might be willing to make a small donation to The Jawa Report to help defray costs? A local business owner is flabbergasted after a shipment of 30 toy guns for his store was confiscated by ATF agents in Tacoma.

Brad Martin and his son, Ben, sell the Airsoft BB guns from their store in Cornelius where they’ve been in business for seven years.

The Martins said they buy their stock from Taiwan because the merchandise is less expensive. But the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives seized a shipment of 30 in October. That shipment is worth around $12,000 and the ATF is promising to destroy the entire shipment.

Special Agent Kelvin Crenshaw said the toys can be easily retro-fitted into dangerous weapons.

"With minimal work it could be converted to a machine gun," Crenshaw said...

Ben Martin disagrees that the toy guns could ever be considered dangerous.

"To say these are readily convertible to machine guns is absolutely preposterous,” he said. “The round wouldn't go into the firing chamber and even if the firing pin did strike the primer the gun would basically blow up in your face.”

ATF said it also seized the toys because they are missing the blaze orange tips required on all imported toy guns.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A flight from Los Angeles to Florida was diverted to Albuquerque early Friday after a passenger sprayed the first-class cabin with a water bottle, tried to open a cabin door and threatened to blow up the aircraft.

Crew members and passengers on Delta Air Lines flight 2148 to Tampa, Fla., subdued Stanley Dwayne Sheffield, 46. He was taken into federal custody after the plane landed at 1:30 a.m. Friday.

"There wasn't time to think, just react. When somebody says they're going to blow up the plane, there's no fooling around," said Tampa Bay Rays broadcaster and former major league manager Kevin Kennedy, who was among a group of eight men that subdued Sheffield.

Kennedy was asleep when the ruckus awoke him, he told reporters before Tampa Bay's baseball game Friday night against Toronto.

"Then I hear in loud voices some guy talking about Satan and death. I can hear the flight attendant, a lady who was a little bit nervous. It woke me up and I was wide awake immediately. I see this guy and he was crossing himself and flipping water around, talking about Satan. As I looked around, other guys (in first class) were kind of waking up," he said.

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Darrin Jones said authorities do not believe the incident was related to terrorism.

Sheffield, whose hometown in Florida wasn't disclosed by investigators, was charged with interference with flight crew members and destruction of aircraft.

Sheffield made an initial appearance Friday before U.S. Magistrate Richard Puglisi, who scheduled preliminary and detention hearings for Monday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chuck Barth said Sheffield remained jailed in Albuquerque.

BAGHDAD -- A U.S. military judge has cleared a Navy SEAL of wrongdoing in the alleged beating of a prisoner suspected of masterminding the grisly 2004 killings of four American contractors in Iraq.

The military says the judge found insufficient evidence to convict Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Keefe on charges of dereliction of duty.

Younus Abdullah Muhammad, author of RevolutionMuslim.com, charged "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone continue to "mock" Muhammad even though the Islamic figure's name was censored from a follow-up show that aired last night.

Asked today if a network decision to bleep out Muhammad's name in a follow-up show satisfied his site, Abdullah Muhammad replied, "They continue to mock. It's a blatant mockery and it's typified by their response. We declared what is Islamically permissible."

A Muslim woman fighting to stay in Canada fears being disfigured with acid for allegedly “bringing shame” to her ex-husband’s family in Pakistan by leaving him and travelling here to work in a hair salon frequented by men.

Roohi Tabassum, 45, of Brampton, said corrosive acid is thrown in the faces of women in Pakistan and other Islamic countries to disfigure them because they have allegedly “shamed” their families.

Tabassum said there have been two incidents the past month in Pakistan where women’s faces were burned with acid by assailants who fled.

“I don’t leave the house or go anywhere because I am scared,” she said. “Sometimes the women are also disabled, burned or tortured.”

Tabassum claims family members in Pakistan are still receiving threats from ex-husband, Faisal Javed, who has threatened to kill her.

“He (ex-husband) is determined to have me killed or crippled,” she said. “I am very concerned for myself.”

ONE OF the world's leading climate scientists has brought a libel lawsuit against a Canadian newspaper for publishing articles he says ''poison'' the debate on global warming.

In a case with potentially huge consequences for online publishers, lawyers acting for Andrew Weaver, a climate modeller at the University of Victoria, Canada, have demanded the National Post remove the articles not only from its own websites, but also from the numerous blogs and sites where they were reposted.

Dr Weaver says the articles, published at the height of several recent controversies over the reliability of climate science in recent months, contain ''grossly irresponsible falsehoods''. He said he filed the suit after the newspaper refused to retract the articles.

Dr Weaver said: ''If I sit back and do nothing to clear my name, these libels will stay on the internet forever.''

The four articles, published from December to February, claimed that Dr Weaver cherrypicked data to support his climate research, and that he tried to blame the ''evil fossil fuel'' industry for break-ins at his office in 2008 to divert attention from reported mistakes in the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, on which he was the lead author.

The attack on the 1,220-ton Cheonan, which sank on March 26 with the loss of 46 of its 104 crew, was carried out in retaliation for a skirmish between warships of the two nations' navies in November of last year, South Korea claims.

The South Korean government has refused to comment officially on the reports but Defence Minister Kim Tae Young told a parliamentary session that the military believed that the sinking was a deliberate act by North Korea.

Officials in military intelligence say they warned the government earlier this year that North Korea was preparing a suicide-squad submarine attack on a South Korean ship.

"Military intelligence made the report to the Blue House [the presidential office] and to the Defence Ministry immediately after the sinking of the Cheonan that it was clearly the work of North Korea's military," a military source said.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - U.S. federal agents detained a passenger on a New York-bound jet from West Africa, telling passengers the man was on a 'no-fly' list and ineligible for international travel for undisclosed security reasons.

Customs and Border Protection agents detained the man while the Delta Air Lines jet stopped to refuel in San Juan, Puerto Rico after an overnight trip from Dakar, Senegal. The flight originated in Nigeria, the native country of a man accused of boarding a Detroit-bound airplane from Amsterdam in December with a bomb hidden in his underwear.

It was unclear if the man detained in Puerto Rico boarded the plane in Nigeria or Senegal, and his name and nationality were not disclosed[...]

But passengers told The Associated Press that the captain announced over the intercom that a passenger had been identified as being on a no-fly list while the jet was over the Atlantic. He made the announcement shortly after a U.S. agent escorted the man in a T-shirt and jeans off the plane.

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., April 22, 2010 – With a cocky grin and larger-than-life presence, Cornelius Madison commands attention when he walks down the high school hall here, always with a hint of a swagger.

Bumping fists and cracking jokes, Cornelius seems impervious to stress or worry. It’s only when discussing his deployed mother in an interview does he reveal a small chink in his otherwise impenetrable bravado.

“As long I know she’s alive, then, I’m good. But if I ever get that call ….” His words drift off and he looks away, unwilling to share his potential pain.

His mother, Army Staff Sgt. Asia Lowe, and stepfather, Army Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Lowe, deployed to Afghanistan for a year about a month ago, their second deployment in three years. Cornelius and his two younger siblings are staying with a family friend.

At 16, Cornelius has assumed the role of man of the house in a home that isn’t even his own.

“It’s not easy, but I was brought up to keep going, no matter what,” he said. “I have to do it for my Mom. I’m really proud of her.”

Cornelius is one of the nearly 2 million American military children and youth growing up in a decade marked by war. He’s also one of the some 900,000 military children whose parents have deployed multiple times. These children endure long separations from a parent who may be in harm’s way, frequent moves, and multiple new schools. They mark major milestones, including graduations, prom nights and sports events, either alone or without one or both of their parents.

The challenges and stressors they endure would knock most well-functioning adults to their knees, said Nancy Beale, school psychologist for the Fort Campbell High School here.

“Yet these kids get up and come to school and maintain their grades and do the best they can,” she said. “It blows me out of the water. And it gives me faith in that concept we call resiliency.”

The ongoing Afghanistan and Iraq wars have taken their toll on the post here. About two-thirds of the active-duty soldiers assigned to Fort Campbell are slated to deploy by fall, noted Bob Jenkins, a post spokesman. That’s a big hit to a post with a total soldier population of roughly 30,000.

While some of his peers take the deployments harder, Cornelius takes the separations and moves – this is his fifth so far -- in stride, shrugging them off as an inevitable part of military life. “Other people have it worse,” he said.

Cornelius’ laid-back attitude may seem surprising to some, but actually is the new norm for adolescents growing up in the military, Beale noted.

Our correspondent inside the Ohio Department of Homeland Security brings even more troubling news. Last Friday they informed us about the department's destruction of thousands of taxpayer-funded brochures because the author, multicultural affairs director Omar Alomari, had promoted a whole laundry list of Islamic groups identified by the DOJ and FBI as groups that had supported terrorism. Alomari described these terror-tied groups in the brochure as "organizations we [Ohio homeland security] are working with".

Then on Monday we were informed that just last week, Ohio homeland security director William Vedra defended his organization's continued association with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), despite a nationwide ban by the DOJ and FBI on any formal association with the group. And yesterday our correspondent had provided us information that Vedra's right-hand man Alomari had been fired from a local college for violating their sexual harassment policy by sleeping with infidel coeds taking his classes. This would be of no one's concern except Mrs. Alomari, except Vedra has invoked Alomari's academic credentials to defend Alomari (and himself) from their critics.

Now comes our inside correspondent with potentially earth-shattering details:

Despite the information I've already provided it is difficult to understate how absolutely corrupt and incompetent our department really is. Most of our leadership are [Gov.] Strickland flunkies and flacks who only have their high-paying jobs because of their political connections. This is nothing new in state government, but the ramifications of such corruption and ineptitude in the agency responsible for our state's homeland security are dire.

For instance, many of our top leaders have inflated their resumes and some have falsified their credentials. I've seen the personnel files for our department, and we have a number of people who have obtained fake degrees from diploma mills. One example I know of first hand is Olen Martin, task force coordinator of our Northern Border Initiative. He not only has one fake degree; in fact, he has two that he cited to get employment here. He is hardly alone in our office. It is truly an insult to those of us who spent years in college and graduate studies that we sometimes work for and are paid less than these frauds.

The leadership problems in our department start from the top down. Bill Vedra never served a day on duty in law enforcement and is a retired firefighter. That is certainly a noble profession, but it hardly qualifies him to be our state's homeland security director. The only reason he is here is because of his political connections to Strickland.

The situation in our state is extremely dangerous, much more than our leadership is willing to publicly admit - even to our elected officials. The flunkies and flacks who run this department are going to get people in our state killed. And when that happens, it will be a very short line from those engaged in terrorist acts and those who encouraged it. Those encouraging it include groups that we continue to work with despite their known terrorist ties, usually escorted into our offices by Omar Alomari. And the politically-connected people in our office with no experience, padded resumes and fake degrees who will have allowed this situation to occur will be the ones promoted when there are dead citizens in our streets.

Checking the LinkedIn profile for Olen Martin (don't worry Mr. Martin, we've got screenshots and printed copies to post once you delete the information; Google cache of the page here), who heads up the Northern Border Initiative, finds that he lists both a bachelors and masters degrees from "Suffield University". But a fifteen second check on the internet finds that "Suffield University" is an illegal diploma mill. Here's what their wikipedia page says:

Suffield University (sometimes referred to as Suffield College and University) is an unaccredited internet school specializing in what it calls Life Experience Degrees, issued upon payment, with life experience assessment based on the word of the applicant. Suffield is not accredited by any accreditation body recognized by its [sic] country. According to the US Department of Education, unaccredited degrees and credits might not be acceptable to employers or other institutions, and use of degree titles may be restricted or illegal in some jurisdictions...

In 2004 the Hartford Courant reported that state authorities in Connecticut had ordered Suffield to cease operations. The states of Oregon, Texas, and Maine list Suffield University as "operating illegally in Connecticut." According to its website, Suffield University now operates in Twin Falls, Idaho, but does not provide a mailing address.

Is falsifying applications for government employment such as what Olen Martin has done with his two fake degrees illegal in the state of Ohio? You would have to ask a legal expert in Ohio about that, but it appears to be the case. A few years ago the police chief in Fostoria, Ohio was indicted on charges of falsification and tampering with records. During the trial it came out the the department's police dog also had a degree from the same educational institution as the police chief. No doubt the next Ohio homeland security director (depending on who had the better political connections -- the police chief or the police dog)!

Having such problems of falsifying resumes in a local police department is certainly one thing; to have top homeland security officials engaging in the same behavior is clearly another. Where are the Ohio state legislators and attorney general? And where the hell are the Ohio media?

BAGHDAD – A U.S. sailor testified Wednesday he saw a Navy SEAL punch an Iraqi prisoner suspected of masterminding the killings in 2004 of four U.S. private security contractors, as the court-martial of another member of the elite unit allegedly involved in the incident opened at a military base outside Baghdad.

Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas, wearing his blue Navy uniform, appeared in a military courtroom at the Victory Base Camp on Baghdad's western outskirts to answer charges of dereliction of duty and impeding an official investigation. He has pleaded not guilty.

Huertas, 28, of Blue Island, Illinois, is the first of three Navy SEALs to go on trial in connection with the alleged assault of the Iraqi prisoner, Ahmed Hashim Abed. He is accused of failing to safeguard the prisoner and attempting to influence the testimony of another service member.

The SEALs' case has gained widespread sympathy in the United States as well as support from at least 20 lawmakers in Congress who have urged U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates to drop the charges.[...]

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Kevin Demartino, who is not a SEAL and was assigned to process and transport Abed after his capture, testified he saw Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe punch the prisoner, and blood come from the prisoner's mouth

Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas, 28, of Blue Island, Illinois, was found not guilty by a six-man jury of charges of dereliction of duty and attempting to influence the testimony of another service member.

The jury spent two hours deliberating the verdict[...]

In her closing arguments, Huertas' civilian attorney Monica Lombardi pointed to inconsistencies between DeMartino's testimony and nearly every other Navy witness. She also reminded the jury of the terrorism charges against Abed, who is in Iraqi custody and has not yet been tried, saying he could not be trusted and may have inflicted wounds on himself as a way of recasting blame on American troops.

You may have heard about the thinly veiled threat against the creators of South Park on the Revolution Muslim website. What you may not know is the contributor who wrote that, Zack Chesser aka Abu Talhah al-Amrike also has another terror supporting blog called the Mujahid blog.

Zack is so proud of his work he has also posted the threats on this blog as well.

The blog is hosted by Wordpress who is hosted in turn by Peer1. We believe that these threats taken in context violate the terms of service of both providers. Zack claims he is just explaining what he thinks is likely to happen to Trey Parker and Matt Stone. But then he goes on to post personal information that makes it all the more likely that someone might try and kill them. In other words he won't kill them, but he's going to try and help out any Radical Muslim who might read his site and decide to "defend the prophet" by the sword.

Below you will find all the information needed on both providers' TOS to write complaints requesting that this blog be removed. My name is Marc Schenker, and I’m a freelance writer. Politically, I’m a committed conservative. First off, thanks to Howie for graciously allowing me a post on this blog to expose and document the vicious, anti-conservative bias and censorship that one of the most heavily trafficked, “news” websites has subjected me to.

I write for Associated Content, a popular news site that gets more unique visitors per month than the Washington Post or the Huffington Post, according to web analytics company Compete.com. I’m a freelance political writer there and am paid per article I publish through an ad revenue-sharing business model. Ostensibly, Associated Content claims to be a non-partisan website, encouraging its contributors to publish articles at will on any topic without prohibitions towards political ideology…unless, as it turned out in my case, YOU ARE CONSERVATIVE.

The actor Jon Voight recently appeared on Fox News’ Huckabee program on April 10, where he read a letter to the American people criticizing Barack Obama. Among many choice criticisms, Voight correctly said Obama was raping America due to his policies. I, being an observant political freelance writer, noticed how absolutely no one in the media covered this electrifying Voight speech, so I decided to write a report on Voight’s Obama criticism and, since I’m conservative, gave it favorable coverage in my analysis. That’s when my publisher, Associated Content, immediately started punishing and retaliating against me for being conservative and expressing a conservative viewpoint in my Voight report.

Associated Content heavily edited my Voight article by censoring exact descriptions of his criticism against Obama as well as the embedded video of his speech that I included; they, without explanation, deleted previous articles that I had written where I criticized Obama and Al Gore; they cheated me, to boot, by actually denying me the payments I had earned for said articles; they threatened to ban me outright from their site when I dared to complain about their unjust anti-conservative bias; they revoked my ability to publish without editorial control; and they subjected all my future articles to first pass through their editorial panel before publishing, a total turnaround from their policy before I authored my Voight article!

In conclusion, it’s beyond undeniable that Associated Content is punishing me, a conservative freelance writer, for reporting on Jon Voight’s criticism of Obama. The issue here is not that Associated Content can do this (they likely can since they’re not a government website), but I think that they are defrauding everybody by not advertising themselves as they should, which is a liberal website that crushingly censors criticism of Obama and Democrats! They claim that they’re simply an open-content publishing “news” site, but they aren’t.

To further prove my point, Associated Content shamelessly allows cheap shot, character assassination articles on their site which tear into conservatives like Glenn Beck. In example, AC contributor Timothy Sexton calls Glenn Beck a 13-year-old special needs kid, yet he wasn’t punished by Associated Content like I was; his Beck-defamation article was even featured on their political section!

What I’m asking is that all conservatives and those who value honesty in advertising and freedom of speech boycott Associated Content absolutely. If you don’t go on Associated Content, you still may find yourself there if you search on the internet for news, as they appear quite frequently at the top of search results, so be cautious. For what I think is their fraud, censorship and anti-conservative bias, Associated Content ought to lose business and thus income as a consequence.

The joint forces quickly followed that up with a morning raid the following day in which insurgent leader Ahmed al-Obeidi was killed in the northern province of Ninevah,

Maj Gen Qassim al-Moussawi, an Iraqi military spokesman, said Obeidi was in charge of al-Qaida in Iraq's operations in the provinces of Kirkuk, Salahuddin and Ninevah.

A man was arrested at Toronto's Pearson airport Tuesday morning trying to carry "suspicious materials" through security, CBC News has learned.

The man intended to board a U.S.-bound flight just before 9 a.m. at Pearson's Terminal One when security staff noticed something suspicious and detained him.

A search revealed the man was carrying batteries in one shoe and shrapnel in another. Peel Regional Police have the man in custody at their airport division. He is being interviewed, but has not been charged.

It's not clear whether the man was acting alone or in co-ordination with others.

Who woulda thunk? I thought the Juice caused Palestinians to hide behind their wives, now this?

WASHINGTON, April 20, 2010 – Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates today told the members of the U.S. Paralympic team that they are inspirations to all members of the armed forces.

Gates hosted the team that competed at the Vancouver, British Columbia, winter games at his Pentagon office.

The Paralympic movement began after World War II, when returning GIs -- many wounded in combat -- looked for ways to continue competing. “It’s important in healing injured servicemembers,” said Charlie Huebner, secretary general of the U.S. Paralympic Committee.

“My transition from a disabled veteran to a disabled athlete was aided by the Defense Department,” said Heath Calhoun, a squad leader with the 101st Airborne Division who lost both legs after his vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Iraq. “For me, it is a personal thing. It’s the power of sport in my life and knowing how it’s helped me rehabilitate, and I just want to say, ‘Thank you very much.’”

The team left the Pentagon to visit with servicemembers undergoing treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here and the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

In recent days we've been providing an overview of the glaring incompetence and outright corruption within the Ohio Department of Homeland Security, led by its director William Vedra. Thanks to our correspondent inside the department, Jawa readers have been treated to a shocking inside view of the agency. Yesterday we noted the recent statements made last week by William Vedra before a group of local law enforcement officials heard and related to our correspondent by a department employee who was present in support of his agency's ongoing partnership with the the terrorist front group, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). As we demonstrated with photographs, not only has Vedra had his picture taken with CAIR officials at department events, he also had the top CAIR official in the state of Ohio, Asma Mobin-Uddin, speak at their "interfaith forum" last August, thumbing his nose at a nationwide ban by the FBI and DOJ of formal contacts with CAIR.

The director's "right-hand man" (a pun, see below) in this ongoing outreach to CAIR is the department's multicultural affairs director Omar Alomari. Last month we noted that Alomari had authored several publications for the homeland security department that Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, likened as "classic Islamist propaganda". Of particular note was a pamphlet authored by Alomari entitled "Agents of Radicalization", which our correspondent informed us the department had to destroy thousands of copies of (at taxpayer expense) when informed by local counterterrorism officials it listed several Islamic organizations who have been identified by the FBI and DOJ as terrorist front groups (including CAIR) that Alomari described as "organizations we [Ohio homeland security] are working with".

Now we have received new information about Alomari and his background. While Omar Alomari and his boss William Vedra like to flaunt his academic teaching credentials, there is one curious hole in his resume: his previous teaching position at Columbus State Community College. This is no mere accident.

In fact, what CSCC officials discovered during Omar Alomari's tenure with their institution is that he liked to have sex with pretty blond-haired, blue-eyed infidel coeds. On its face this would only be of concern to Mrs. Alomari, the relevance for our purposes is that the college also discovered that Alomari was sleeping with his female students while they were enrolled in his classes in violation of the school's sexual harassment policy. We've been provided by our inside correspondent a copy of the CSCC investigation report that found he was doing exactly that.

The school didn't appreciate Omar Alomari's peculiar approach to "multicultural affairs", because upon confirmation of those facts, Alomari was fired. In good Islamist fashion, he immediately claimed that he was being discriminated against for his ethnic and religious background. Take one wild guess who his case was supported by? The Ohio Civil Rights Commission eventually disagreed, though they didn't take into account his right to take "women whom your right hand posses" (4:24), proving that they too are a bunch of Islamophobes.

From those internal CSCC and court documents we were provided it seems that Alomari's special approach to "multicultural relations" would be to target married coeds in his Middle East and Arabic classes, promising his victim "special help" with projects. After wooing them for a while, he would promise to leave his wife and marry them if they would divorce their husbands, treating them to weekend trips to Niagara Falls and continued "special help" with their classes he was teaching. In the case that prompted his firing from CSCC, the scandal cost the victim her own marriage.

Again, while this would be of no concern for us whatsoever if it were a strictly private matter, William Vedra has recently cited Omar Alomari's academic career as something to silence Alomari's (and also his) critics. Now we see that in doing so Vedra is being flatly disingenuous. When Vedra speaks of the sterling character and outstanding reputation of "his friend" Omar Alomari, it is clear his standards are pretty low. No doubt members of the Ohio Muslim community would be rightly outraged to discover that the only person considered for the multicultural affairs position with the Ohio Department of Homeland Security is the scandal-ridden and CAIR-selected Omar Alomari.

A New York businessman who pleaded guilty to trying to funnel money to a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan has been sentenced to just over 10 years in prison.

Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari, also known as Michael Mixon, is a bank underwriter and resident of Ardsley, New York, charged in Manhattan federal court with terrorism financing, material support of terrorism, and international money laundering, as well as additional charges of conspiracy and wire fraud.[1]

Hassan Abdulraham, an American-born Muslim convert who is wanted for murder in the United States, says he met with Robert Levinson on March 8, 2007, at the Maryam Hotel on Kish Island, a Persian Gulf island that is part of Iran. Levinson, who was working for a private security company, had taken a flight to Kish Island from Dubai as part of an investigation into the lucrative cigarette smuggling trade.

Can we really be expected to believe an American born Muslim convert wanted for murder here in the U.S.?

Iraq's Prime Minister and the US military confirmed that al Qaeda in Iraq's top two leaders have been killed during a raid in a remote region in the western province of Anbar.

"Abu Ayyub al Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al Muhajir, Abu Omar al Baghdadi and a number of al Qaeda leaders in Iraq were killed during a security operation in al Thar Thar region in Anbar," Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki told reporters at a press conference in Baghdad, according to Voices of Iraq.

The eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano is unlikely to have any significant impact on climate but has caused a small fall in carbon emissions, experts say.

How could this be possible, you ask?

A larger effect on the atmosphere, though still small in global terms, comes from the mass-grounding of European flights over the past few days.

Let me get this straight. Per the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, the volcano eruption could cause "very insignificant" cooling. But what is really getting the climate change crowd moist is that planes aren't flying, which means planes aren't emitting carbon. Technically, the volcanic eruption is good. Awesome! I'll call Europe and tell them things are good. Real good.

This could be extrapolated further into the underlying goal of the environmental groups. The earth is healthier when economic pursuit is at a stand still.

Those affected by this are always in my thoughts and prayers.

Strange goings-on in the state of Ohio. Last Friday we published correspondence from an official inside the Ohio Department of Public Safety, which oversees Ohio homeland security, informing us that the department had to destroy thousands of copies of homeland security brochures authored by multicultural affairs director Omar Alomari. Our correspondent noted that the copies of the brochure (printed at taxpayer expense), "Agents of Radicalization", had to be destroyed because Alomari promoted several Muslim groups on the back of the publication identified by the DOJ and FBI as supporters of terrorism as "organizations we [Ohio homeland security] are working with".

Just last month Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich sent a letter to several members of Congress explaining why the terror-tied group was named unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorism finance trial in American history and why the DOJ and FBI has severed relations with CAIR.

But Ohio homeland security director William Vedra has not apparently got the DOJ and FBI's memos on CAIR. Our correspondent informs us that just last week, Vedra appeared before a group of Ohio law enforcement officials explaining why his organization continues to do business with CAIR in defiance of the federal ban on open association with the terrorist front group, which DOJ prosecutors said in February 2008 had "conspired with other affiliates of the Muslim Brotherhood to support terrorists".

Now to our correspondent inside the Ohio department of homeland security:

The office is buzzing about comments our director Bill Vedra made at a law enforcement meeting this week in defense of our ongoing association with the Council on American-Islamic Relations. There are pictures circulating of Vedra getting cozy with CAIR officials at an interfaith forum organized by Alomari last August, even though we were already aware that the FBI had cut ties with them.

According to one of my co-workers who was in the room, Vedra explained that we continue to work with CAIR just like we meet with gangbangers, drug dealers, mafia underlings, criminal informants and other "bad guys" to gather information. He explained away him getting his picture taken with Alomari and the executive director of the local CAIR office by saying that it was an open forum and he couldn't stop anyone from attending.

I doubt CAIR is going to appreciate likened to criminals, but it is staggering that he had to scrape the bottom of the social strata to defend their association with CAIR. Through another source we were able to procure for Jawa readers a copy of the photograph in question, which indeed shows Ohio Homeland Security director William Vedra with Omar Alomari and Babak Darvish, the CAIR-Columbus executive director (who Jawa readers will remember organized the persecution of Muslim apostate Rifqa Bary).

Ah, but our correspondent still has yet to reach the punch line:

Vedra started to squirm when someone asked him if he couldn't prevent a top CAIR official from attending the event, why was Darvish's boss, CAIR-OH president Asma Mobin-Uddin, asked by Alomari to speak at the event. I'm told that with a deer-in-the-headlights look, Vedra mumbled something about not inviting Mobin-Uddin to speak as a CAIR official.

Indeed, we also have procured a copy of CAIR-OH president Asma Mobin-Uddin speaking at the Ohio homeland security interfaith event:

So William Vedra gets caught in a lie with his initial explanation that he couldn't prevent CAIR officials from attending a public event, conveniently forgetting that the top CAIR official in the state was on the homeland security's agenda as a featured speaker that day. Vedra must also be Ohio Secretary of State if he can magically wave his hands and deem a CAIR corporate officer a non-CAIR official for the day so they can speak at his interfaith forum. Do you think that William Vedra has gangbangers, drug dealers and mafia rats speaking at his state-sponsored forums on gang violence, drug prevention and organized crime????

It is nothing short of institutional rot, incompetence and outright corruption that allows a state homeland security department to publish "classic Islamist propaganda" as Zuhdi Jasser of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy described the Ohio homeland security publications authored by Omar Alomari. And it is becoming clear that the fish is rotting from the head down in Ohio beginning the homeland security director William Vedra, who can justify as the top homeland security official in Ohio continuing to work with terrorist front groups like CAIR. Then again, he has allowed CAIR's own mole inside their organization, Omar Alomari, to operate with impunity.

Our thanks to our correspondent inside the department who is risking not just job, but also career, to let the public know the truth about this situation. We'll bring you more if and when we get it.

...Taliban believe they are winning and are able to negotiate from a position of strength. Asked about a forthcoming Nato offensive in the Kandahar region, a local Taliban commander who sat alongside the two scholars boasted: “We’re ready for this. We’re going to break the Americans’ teeth.”

The Taliban leaders said that lessons had been learnt from Nato’s last big offensive in the Marjah area of Helmand province earlier this year. When Nato gave advance notice of the operation, the Taliban were lured into sending too many fighters to the area, some of whom died.

The leaders said that in Kandahar a plan to counter Nato had already been prepared.

“There will be no surprise there,” said Abdul Rashid. “We have our people inside all positions in the city, in the government and the security forces.”

Adam Savit at Big Government has the details: The Pastor, the Pedophile and CAIR

On April 5 the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a press release urging GOP leaders to “insist” that Congresswoman Sue Myrick (R-NC) withdraw support from the non-profit grassroots advocacy organization ACT! for America. CAIR referred to ACT! for America, one of the largest national security (and pro-American and pro-Israel) citizens organizations in the United States, as an “anti-Islam hate group.” ...

On April 13 CAIR-Tampa echoed the CAIR national office message with this action alert and directed readers to a petition calling for 5,000 signatures condemning the GOP and Myrick for associating with ACT! for America. CAIR could only find a single spokesperson to prop up their attack on ACT! For America, a certain Reverend Wilifred Allen-Faiella of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove, FL. The CAIR action alert quotes from her letter which echoes, word for word, CAIR’s talking points from their smear campaign:

“As a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ who preached love for all I am appalled that a Congresswoman can support a hate-filled group such as “Act for America”. Their statements about Muslims constitute hate speech and no responsible leader of this country founded on the principles that all are created equal should associate herself with such an anti-American group.”

Big mistake in spokepersons, CAIR.

The question is open as to whether CAIR bothered to investigate Allen-Faiella’s questionable background before they chose her to be their sole spokeperson, since she is best known for her starring role in a well-publicized 2004 Miami scandal when she allowed a convicted pedophile to volunteer at the thrift shop next to her church’s K-6 elementary school.

Oh, there's more. But it is a testament to the character and judgment of those dwindling few who still continue to defend Hamas front-group CAIR.

What could go wrong?

Muslim and Arab-American advocates have participated in policy discussions and received briefings from top White House aides and other officials on health care legislation, foreign policy, the economy, immigration and national security. They have met privately with a senior White House adviser, Valerie Jarrett, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to discuss civil liberties concerns and counterterrorism strategy.

The impact of this continuing dialogue is difficult to measure, but White House officials cited several recent government actions that were influenced, in part, by the discussions. The meeting with Ms. Napolitano was among many factors that contributed to the government’s decision this month to end a policy subjecting passengers from 14 countries, most of them Muslim, to additional scrutiny at airports, the officials said.

That emergency directive, enacted after a failed Dec. 25 bombing plot, has been replaced with a new set of intelligence-based protocols that law enforcement officials consider more effective.

Also this month, Tariq Ramadan, a prominent Muslim academic[And terrorist supporter..ed], visited the United States for the first time in six years after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reversed a decision by the Bush administration, which had barred Mr. Ramadan from entering the country, initially citing the U.S.A. Patriot Act. Mrs. Clinton also cleared the way for another well-known Muslim professor, Adam Habib, who had been denied entry under similar circumstances.

The ploy has defied thousands of security forces in Baghdad by getting around the mass of checkpoints used to deter car bombings.

America's military has even come up with a new term - HBIED (house-borne improvised explosive device) for the attacks.

(Bonn, Germany) At the Green Party National Women's Congress this weekend in Bonn, the party leadership announced an anti-macho manifesto to achieve gender justice among all Greens. The new and stronger gender message is now proclaimed to be: "We no longer need to be macho!" along with "equality and male feminism."

The signatories include several Green politicians from the European parliament, the German Bundestag as well as local Green leaders. "We no longer want to be macho," it declares, "we want to be people. You are not born a man, you are turned into one."

The men's manifesto makes two main points. First, men need to break out of their traditional gender roles. "We need a new awareness of a new masculinity," write its co-authors Sven Lehmann and Jan Philipp Albrecht. Second, they argue that their fellow men need to realize that real equality will not happen without their participation.

"We want to live differently!" writes Lehmann, a senior member of the North Rhine-Westphalia branch of the party, and the European parliamentarian Albrecht. They appeal for a slower pace of life, less focus on profit and more health consciousness. They want to start holding "Boys' Days and gender-sensitive career-guidance sessions."

Arif Mujali blew up a ship in 2002, was eventually arrested. He escaped jail in 2006. He was plotting to attack the British Embassy when he was arrested again. Mujali was released this week without explanation or charge.

When the Yemeni government starts releasing al Qaeda, its important to look at the other side of the deal. Its usually a quid pro quo or maybe a high ranking military commander pulled some strings to get him out.

Yemen Post Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula AQAP rejected on Wednesday reports including statements by a Somali minister that it had relocated to Somalia, the News Yemen reported.

On the other hand, an official source said that security authorities had freed an Al-Qaeda-linked detainee, Arif Mujali who escaped from the Central Prison in Sana'a in 2006. Mujali was charged with attacking the French oil tanker off Mukalla port in 2002. Mujala was recently arrested among a group that planned to attack foreign missions in the country including the British embassy.

Yemen Times: There is no law in Yemeni legislation that defines a minimum age for marriage. However, there are Islamic legislations that prevent men from forcing their wives into intercourse. Renowned religious scholar Mohammed Hassan said that the Islamic Jurisprudence prohibits forced intercourse between the husband and wife.

"If a woman is forced to bed by her husband, she should know that he is committing a sin and should be punished according the jurisprudence. She should not think that Islam discriminates against women, it is the sole act of this man," he said.

He emphasized that, in Islam, marriage is a relationship based on kindness and empathy as read in the Roman’s Chapter in the Quran verse 21: "And among His signs is that He created spouses for you from yourselves for you to gain rest from them, and kept love and mercy between yourselves; indeed in this are signs for the people who ponder."

"The essence of the marital relationship is passion and the husband should make his wife feel that he wants more than just her body for early pleasure but also her companionship and emotions, and so should the wife. Aggressiveness and violence in the bedroom is not acceptable in Islam," he added.

The Prophet Mohammed (MPBH) had said: "Do not fall onto your wife like an animal, and have a messenger between the two of you." He was asked: "What is this messenger?" He replied: "The kiss and the conversation."

Security experts contacted Facebook and they shut it down

The al Qaeda leader, or someone posing as him, was using the social-networking site as a platform to show videos and speeches to Islamic militants -- until Facebook shut him down, that is.

His address was given as "the mountains of the world."

On Thursday, a security expert urged Facebook's U.S. owners to shut down the profile page, named "The leader of the Mujahideen, Osama bin Laden." The profile became active on March 25 and had already attracted nearly 1,000 extremists. Access was via the Taliban's own Facebook presence, according to U.K. publication The Sun.

Anwar Awlaki's brother Omar verbally attacked and threatened a Salafi researcher on al Qaeda as he was leaving a mosque in Sana'a yesterday. Saeed Obaid Jamahi said in an interview with al Tagheer (The Change), an independent news site, that Omar Awlaki confronted him and threatened to kill him in front of dozens of worshipers. Jamahi told al Tagheer the attack surprised him because he sympathizes with Anwar Awlaki's cause and believes Awlaki should not be hunted or killed without clear evidence of wrong doing. Jamahi urged the Ministry of the Interior and Attorney General to do their duty and take the threats seriously.

Ah, update from a witness: Saeed Ubeid was interviewed at his home by a western TV channel which was conducting a series of interviews for a program on Anwar al Awlaqi. As Anwar's home was in the same neighborhood, the channel called Nassir al Alwalqi (Anwar's father and a leading member of the ruling party) for an interview. He refused and asked the channel to stop "campaigning against his son" and insulted the channel aggressively. Afterward, Mr. Ubeid left his home for prayer in the neighborhood mosque, where he met with Anwar's brother who insulted him, tried to physically attack him and threatened him with death.

A senior Iranian cleric has claimed that dolled-up women incite extramarital sex, causing more earthquakes in Iran, a country that straddles several fault lines, newspapers reported on Saturday.

The bombers struck minutes apart in the Kacha Pukha camp on the outskirts of the garrison city of Kohat, a registration centre for people fleeing Taliban violence and Pakistani army operations close to the Afghan border.

Update on Al Qaeda: "We Will Murder French & Italian Hostages if You Don't Release our Brothers"

An Italian couple who were being held hostage in the west African country of Mali by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb have been released.

Local officials said Sergio Cicala and Philomene Kaboure were picked up by an army patrol in the eastern Gao region.

Italy's foreign minister said they were "in the hands of Malian authorities" and were being taken to a "safe place".

Mr Cicala and Mrs Kaboure - who is also a citizen of Burkina Faso - were seized in December in neighbouring Mauritania.

Or something like that has gone viral on twitter. Only, the whole thing is a hoax.

Hey, nutjobs: I heard the same thing in 2000, and in 2004, and in 2008.

I'm sure this particular urban myth has been around much longer than that but if you get a viral email along these lines just pay it no attention. The conspiracy nuts work over time to find each and every unrelated factoid in order to weave together a complicated narrative of hidden powers out to get us.

But they weren't making fun of Muhammad. They were making fun of Muslims like Zach who are the only group of religious zealots who threaten violence every time they are offended.

Which makes this whole thing perfectly ironic.

And it's not just Zach, but his buddies on the forums and over at Facebook who are pissed off at South Park for once again pointing out that they are a bunch of thin-skinned dirtbags.

After which he answers his own question and gives out the address to Parker and Stone's offices with the advice that you can contact them or, "pay them a visit".

Members of the U.S. Navy were denied access to FoxNews.com for hours on Friday before service was finally restored shortly before noon ET, the Navy confirmed.

Cdr. Danny Hernandez, a Navy spokesman, said he was unable to offer an exact reason why access to Fox News' Web site had been blocked, but he said it most definitely was a technical issue.

"This was not a policy issue," Hernandez said.

Fox News received e-mails from Navy personnel around the world on Friday complaining that they could not gain access to the Web site. They said they were able to view numerous other news Web sites.

When they tried to access FoxNews.com, the following message appeared: "Access to this site has been denied in accordance with Navy policy to safeguard the security posture and/or to maintain the operational integrity of the NMCI."

Last month I noted an Investigative Project article noting that Ohio Homeland Security had published materials that Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, characterized as "classic Islamist propaganda". These items were written by the homeland security office's multicultural affairs director, Omar Alomari.

Now an insider has contacted us informing us that Ohio Homeland Security had to destroy thousands of the brochures mentioned in the previous article for promoting terror-linked groups and that they are trying to promote Alomari as a "de-radicalization" expert. Can it be really just coincidence that the government continually picks the radicalized foxes to guard the de-radicalization hen-house?

The brochure in question published by Ohio Homeland Security is entitled "Agents of Radicalization". The Investigative Project described it contents:

Alomari also authored a two-page brochure called "Agents of Radicalization" for the Ohio Department of Homeland Security. In it, he lists several grievances driving terrorism in the Muslim world, including Israel's occupation and oppression of the Palestinians, U.S. support for Israel, the U.S. invasion and occupation of Muslim lands and support for repressive regimes. [i.e. it has nothing about Islamic ideology - B] Alomari goes on to explain that such terrorism also stems from the expected societal reaction of the once proud and thriving Arab/Muslim culture, now in decline and conflict because of the stronger and aggressive West.

Jasser describes the two publications as "full of factual inaccuracies" including the assertion that 66 percent of American Arabs are Muslim (close to three-fourths are Christian). Alomari also "misses the core problem: political Islam." Instead, he indulges in "bizarre revisionist history" which "seeks to portray Muslims as victims."

The United States is engaged in "a war of ideas" with radical Islam. Regarding jihadists, "you would hope that [Alomari] would say that these are corrupt thugs who have hijacked our faith," Jasser told the Investigative Project on Terrorism. But instead he "describes [terrorism] as a response to what the West has done."

The material Alomari's agency is putting out is "classic Islamist propaganda" which suggests that "these thugs who kill people in restaurants and shopping malls will stop if we solve the Arab-Israeli conflict," Jasser said. "In fact, they'll find another grievance in a year or two."

The article goes on to state that the brochure lists seven different Islamic organizations, many of which were listed by the Department of Justice as unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation trial.

We recently received an email from a State of Ohio employee who recounts what happened to Alomari's radicalization brochure (apologies for just now getting around to it):

I read your recent article about our department's publication entitled "Agents of Radicalization."

I work with Omar Alomari and I can tell you what actually happened with that brochure. Thousands of copies were printed up by the department (at taxpayer expense, of course). Some copies had been provided to some of our partner agencies. As boxes of these things were getting ready to be shipped out, our director was contacted by some counter-terrorism officials and told that the brochure was promoting groups that the FBI and other agencies were trying to distance themselves from (like CAIR). The director was told that Department of Justice had linked several of these groups to terrorist organizations (CAIR, ISNA, MAS, etc).

The end result is that the radicalization brochure never saw the light of day. All of the copies that were about to be sent out had to be destroyed and employees were sent that day to the other agencies to collect the handful that had already been distributed. We don't even have the pdf posted on our website anymore. I know a few hard copies still exist that people inside and outside our office have held onto because of the fiasco. I can try to get you one if you need proof. I'm not sure how much the state paid to print these up only to have to destroy them before they ever went out, but I'm sure someone could file a public records request to find out. It was around March or April 2008 as I recall. [Anyone want to submit that request? Contact us! - B]

It is common knowledge in our office that Omar is definitely not on our team. He hangs out with these same terror-linked groups and even brings them into meetings he arranges to give them legitimacy. But now our agency and especially our director Bill Vedra is pushing Omar out as some kind of national de-radicalization expert. It is no secret to anyone who knows him that Omar Alomari IS a radical, but he is great at playing the "moderate" when he needs to be.

In hindsight, I'm glad the brochure didn't go out, because it was clearly "Islamist propaganda" as described in your article. But we all know Omar is untouchable because of his connection to our local Islamofascists who will lay siege to our office and brand anyone a bigot that dares say a word against him. He is the one who keeps the bad guys aware of what goes on in our office. CAIR is the one who got him this job in the first place!!! Because he is basically the information pipeline to the wrong people it is virtually impossible to do our job to protect the public as long as Omar is in our office. And our agency's leadership -- especially Bill Vedra -- being a bunch of cowards makes it even worse.

I'm contacting you through my personal email for obvious reasons and I have to ask that you keep my identity strictly confidential. Any criticism of Omar and his friends is strictly forbidden and I would get fired for even breathing a word about this. I did contact the correspondent and confirmed that they did in fact work at the Ohio Department of Public Safety. They definitely hold a position where they would know about these matters. On January 15th, 2010 LTC Aldridge left for his third active duty deployment since joining the Army Reserves Medical Corps. Before leaving, Danielle Mostoller, the hospital’s PR representative, had LTC Aldridge promise to write regular updates that would be placed in the hospital’s email newsletter, which reaches 1600 people.

By February, 2010 LTC Aldridge was settled in with the 909th Forward Surgical Team (FST) in Forward Operating Base (FOB) Shank located in Logar Province, Afghanistan.

Soon after Aldridge’s “updates” hit the hospital newsletter, people began to respond. Danielle asked if there was anything they could send him. Maybe some care packages of snacks or books and such? LTC Aldridge, knowing that there were so many people around him that really did need something, responded with a simple request of socks for the Afghan soldiers and school supplies for the orphaned children of a nearby local village. A singular sentence. A simple whisper.

Pakistan intercepted a message that the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) has added an Islamic scholar to their list of people to kill. This shouldn't surprise anyone since the list simply says "Everybody, even Muslim, since they are just sitting there. I mean right freakin' there for Allah sakes."

Tahir ul-Qadri issued a fatwa (Sorry Howie - not for you) condemning terrorism last month. Here are some quotes from the Foreign Policy article:

"I have declared a jihad against terrorism," says the 59-year-old Qadri in an interview. "I am trying to bring [the terrorists] back towards humanism. This is a jihad against brutality, to bring them back towards normality. This is an intellectual jihad."

While quite a few scholars before have condemned terrorism as haram (forbidden), the new fatwa categorically declares it to be no less than kufr (acts of disbelief). The US Treasury Department has designated two Pakistanis as terrorists for using charitable front organizations to funnel money to al Qaeda and the Taliban. The Karachi-based terrorists have not been detained by the Pakistani government, despite providing open support for the Taliban, al Qaeda, and other terror groups.

Mohammed Mazhar, the director of the Al Akhtar Trust, and Mufti Abdul Rahim, the leader of the Al Rashid Trust, have been designated as terrorists under Executive Order 13224 for "providing support to terrorists or acts of terrorism." The designation allows the US to freeze their assets, prevent them from using financial institutions, and prosecute them for terrorist activities.[ more]

Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) accused the Obama administration of stalling a congressional investigation into the Fort Hood shootings and threatened to start issuing subpoenas.

His vow opens a new rift with the White House for the Independent Lieberman, as well as the possibility of President Barack Obama’s first legal showdown with Congress.

At a press conference Thursday, Lieberman said he would give the administration until Monday to release information about the shootings and, if it didn’t, would start subpoenaing.

Lieberman and ranking Homeland Security panel member Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said they would issue the subpoenas to the Defense Department and Justice Department under their own authority and would seek full committee approval to take the administration to court if the information isn’t released.

A stern Lieberman said he and Collins have been stalled for five months in their attempts to seek answers in the Nov. 5, 2009, tragedy at the Texas military base, in which 13 people were shot dead. An Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, is accused of the murders, which Lieberman and others have described as an act of terrorism because Hasan had been in contact with Islamic clerics and may have acted out of opposition to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The firm made the remarks as part of a settlement agreement with New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in his ongoing probe into unethical practices and criminal conduct in connection with the investment of public funds. Quadrangle, which Rattner co-founded, agreed to repay $7 million to New York State and to sign on to Cuomo's "Public Pension Fund Reform Code of Conduct."

The top leader of the dangerous Haqqani Network operating in eastern Afghanistan said that al Qaeda fighters are welcome to fight alongside the Taliban, and that his forces control 90 percent of the areas under his command.

Siraj Haqqani, the military commander of the deadly Haqqani Network, a Taliban group that operates in eastern Afghanistan, made the statements during an interview conducted by Abu Dujanah al Sanaani for the newly established Al Balagh Media Center. A translation of Siraj's interview was provided by Flashpoint Partners.

...When asked about the Haqqani Network and the Taliban's relationship with "mujahideen who emigrate to the land of the Khorasan" and whether they "form any obstacle or burden on the Afghani people," Siraj responded that the foreign fighters, or al Qaeda, "enlighten the road for us and they resist against the cross worshippers by cooperating with us and us with them in one trench." Hamas executes two "collaborators" with Israel

In the first such executions in Gaza for five years and the first since Hamas seized power, the two men were killed by firing squad before dawn, said Samir Zakut of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Misan.

"This morning, the death sentences against collaborators Mohammed Ibrahim Ismail, 37, from Rafah, and Nasser Salameh Abu Freih, 34, of Jabaliya, were carried out," the Hamas interior ministry said on its website.

"They had been found guilty of collaborating for several years with the Zionist occupiers and of having as a result caused the death of several fighters," it said.

I'm only posting this because: a) it's being shown on the Islamist forums as evidence that the mujahideen brought the plane down; b) it's being shown on a number of other websites as evidence that the Russians brought the plane down.

I don't believe either version. If those really are gunshots, then I think the far more likely explanation is that Russian police [милиция] are firing shots into the air to warn off people.

I've lived in Russia and if the police out in the boondocks are as unprofessional as the police in Moscow, then it not only wouldn't it surprise me if they were shooting in the air but it would surprise me if they weren't.

I speak a little Russian, but I can't vouch for the translation as most of the voices are very feint. But if the translation is right, then I think the scenario I've laid out is much more likely than either of the two conspiracy theories.

For instance, before the alleged shots are heard someone is saying off in the distance, "Get out of here you bastards."

Then, "Get out of here."

Then there's yelling which goes untranslated by the video maker, but I'm pretty sure the voice is saying, "давай" which is what you say when you are trying to get someone to hurry up, kind of like, "come on!"

Then, "we're all going back". And, "Sir, get out of here. We're all leaving."

I'm not 100% sure what the guy holding the camera says next, but it's not "Give me a gun" as some suggest. It's been 15 years since I really had a long conversation in Russian. Maybe someone wants to translate that?

It's only at this point that I hear what could be a gunshot and a voice saying, "Everyone, move back! Let's go."

So, if those really are gunshots then I think that the most likely explanation is that it's the local yokel police trying to warn off lookie loos (perhaps even the military, given that this was a state function with all the added security -- and the Russian military is even less professional than the police).

Another explanation, though, is those aren't gunshots at all, but rather secondary minor explosions from the crash. Notice the fire burning? Ever throw a can of soda pop in a fire? Every former Boy Scout knows what I'm talking about.

As Colbert noted the other day, 90% of Americans who have heard about the alleged "murder" of civilians in Iraq by US troops won't actually take the time to watch the video which clearly vindicates them.

And how did the Huffington Post -- one of the leading left-of-center blogs -- contextualize the report? By reporting the Wiki Leak "collateral murder" lies as if they were the truth.

Now that we've definitively shown the entire affair to be a hoax propagated by Wiki Leak in order to raise money for the failing website, what has Huff Po done to clarify to its "patriotic" readership that the entire affair was bogus, and that while the deaths of any civilians are tragic, that US soldiers acted entirely within the rules of engagement?

Precisely squat.

Go read the whole affair over at Huff-Watch. It's shameful.

It's more than shameful, it's unpatriotic.

I know there are patriots on the Left. It's just hard to find them when every single accusation leveled at the military seems to be believed by them prima facie.

I'm not saying no one in the military ever does anything bad. Of course that's not the case. There are over a million men and women in uniform, and with numbers that large you are destined to get a few nuts and/or bad apples. Case in point.

What I'm saying is that if your first reaction to an alleged scandal is to believe it, then you need to check your patriot meter.

My first reaction is to put the onus of proof on the accusers, not the military. I'm guessing this is because I love our country and actually know that our military is run by professionals and manned by people like you and me. Good people. Not the kind of people who routinely kill civilians for fun.

Our men and women in uniform have made grave and mortal sacrifices of time, money, and blood for our nation. If any one deserves an assumption of innocence until proven guilty, they do. Anything short of this is unpatriotic.

(Isle of Anglesey, UK) Peter and Claire Davey, parents of seven children with one on the way and plans for 14 total, are unemployed and live entirely on welfare.

The Daveys subsist in their four-bedroom home, with two cars and a 42-inch wide-screen among other electronic gizmos, on the paltry sum of £42,000 a year in benefits. That's about $65,000.

For some strange reason, the Daveys complain that they deserve more in benefits.

Mrs Davey, who has never had a full-time job, told Closer magazine: "It's hard. We can't afford holidays and I don't want my kids living on a council estate and struggling like I have.

"I don't feel bad about being subsidised by people who are working. I'm just working with the system that's there.

"If the government wants to give me money, I'm happy to take it. We get what we're entitled to. I don't put in anything because I don't pay taxes, but if I could work I would.

"We couldn't afford to care for our children without benefits, but as long as they have everything they need, I don't think I'm selfish."

The British government deserves condemnation for turning a population of proud and independent people formerly at the forefront of industry and invention into a parasitic crowd of arrogant beggars.

Now Waxman has quietly spiked his inquisition:

A House Energy and Commerce Committee spokeswoman tells me that Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., has indeed cancelled the April 21 subcommittee hearing in which CEOs were to testify about Obamacare.

The CEOs, required by law to be honest about earnings projections, re-stated their bottom lines in reaction to Obamacare's passage, earning the ire of Waxman and other Democrats.

Hearings on this matter would likely have proved an embarrassment to the Democrats and helped drag out discussion of Obamacare's unexpected ill effects.

Rahm over at Terror Free Somalia brings us word that al Qaeda's Somali affilliate, the al Shabaab Youth Mujahideen Movement (al Shabaab), have beheaded a man in the streets of Mogadishu.

His crime? Tax evasion. Rahm calls it the "jihad tax."

I don't read Somali, but the images pretty much speak for themselves.

I did a Google search on this and apparently this wasn't the only beheading in Mogadishu in the last couple of days. Another body was found near a market today, but that appears to be a separate incident that the one pictured below.

U.S. military officials tell NBC News that the U.S. Army will court martial a lieutenant colonel who refuses to deploy to Afghanistan because he considers orders from President Obama to be "illegal."

Army doctor Lt. Col. Terry Lakin believes Obama does not meet the constitutional requirements to be president and commander-in-chief, because he believes (incorrectly) that Obama wasn't born in the United States.

One wonders if Lakin displayed any signs of mental illness in the past but the military powers that be overlooked them because they really need doctors? Kind of like they did with Nidal Hasan and his public flirtations with violent jihadism.

President Obama signed an executive order freezing the US assets of Somali pirates and militants, and Yemeni Fares Manna for violating the arms embargo on Somalia. Nice move!!! I guess Manna's smuggled shipload of Chinese weapons (and all the ships before) didn't exactly escape notice. Yemeni arms to Somalia is a main cause of instability, the UN found. I have no idea if Fares Manna has US assets, but for sure he's a leading regional arms smuggler. I've been saying that for five years. Fares Manna was also the Yemeni government's prime negotiator with the Houthi rebels and his brother Hassan was the governor of the war torn Sa'ada governorate until Fares was arrested last month.

AP Obama's action would allow the Treasury Department to sanction or freeze the assets of individuals involved in piracy off Somalia's coast or militants who have done anything to threaten the shaky nation's stability.

The piracy and eroding security in Somalia, where al-Qaida linked insurgents are finding sanctuary, "constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States," Obama said in an executive order.

The order targets anyone who threatens the peace, interferes with the delivery of humanitarian assistance or violates the United Nations arms embargo in the lawless nation.

Earlier Tuesday, Treasury officials imposed new sanctions on nearly a dozen suspected Islamist militants, including some linked to the al-Shabab terrorist group in Somalia....

The Treasury Department said that it would also freeze the assets of: Abshir Abdillahi, 44; Hassan Abdullah Hersi al-Turki, 66; Ahmed Abdi aw-Mohamed, 33; Yasin Ali Baynah, 44; Mohamed Abdi Garaad, 37; Yemane Ghebreab, 59; Fuad Mohamed Khalaf; Bashir Mohamed Mahamoud, 28; Mohamed Sa'id, 44; and Fares Mohammed Mana'a, a Yemeni who reportedly holds a diplomatic passport from Yemen. All of the ages are estimates provided by the department.

Mana'a, one of the biggest arms dealers in Yemen, has been arrested and in the custody of Yemeni authorities for more than a month.

Yemen’s Foreign Minister Abu Baker al Qirby urged Anwar Awlaki to turn himself to be tried under Yemeni law, vowing that no Yemeni citizen would be extradited to the US or any other country.

The US announced last week that it had authorized Awlaki’s kill or capture, having determined he is an active al Qaeda operative. Awlaki was previously known for brainwashing vulnerable persons on the internet. Awlaki holds duel Yemeni-American citizenship.

“Yemen is going to prosecute those within its territory, and they will be punished according to the law if found guilty of any crimes punishable by the law,” al-Qirby said in an interview published by the quasi governmental Yemen Observer.

There is one small problem. Yemen’s law does not criminalize jihad abroad in defense of occupied Muslim lands. If Anwar Awlaki, or any other Yemeni jihaddist, is guilty of conspiring to commit murder in the US, there's no law in Yemen that prohibits or punishes it. Yemeni courts have explicitly accepted jihad as a viable defense.

In one notable terror trial in July 2006, the defendants admitted to fighting in Iraq against coalition forces as well as training suicide bombers. "This does not violate [Yemeni] law," the judge found. “Islamic Sharia law permits jihad against occupiers," he said.

Jihad on American Soldiers and American Civilians

What is jihad? A lethal shooting spree at Fort Hood, according to Anwar Awlaki. Awlaki was in contact with Nidal Hassan prior to the attack and issued a statement after, entitled "Nidal Hassan is a hero.”

Personable and easy spoken, Awlaki is the calm western voice of al Qaeda's bloody fanaticism that slipped under the door of many English speaking homes. His logic of slaughter is chilling: “Nidal opened fire on soldiers who were on their way to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. How can there be any dispute about the virtue of what he has done?” Some of Yemen’s religious authorities also consider US troops as legitimate targets of terrorism.

Yemen’s Koranic dialog program, aimed at reforming al Qaeda terrorists, never discouraged fighting in Iraq. An expedited release program, the dialog program discouraged religious fanatics from defining the regime of President Ali Abdullah Saleh as an apostate. The program’s director, Judge Hamoud al Hittar said in 2005, "Iraq is not a subject of the dialogue." Al Hittar has since become Minster of Endowments. Some state clerics in Yemen call for harm to the US in weekly prayers.

The Yemeni judicial system and religious authorities have found that US soldiers are legitimate targets. Does it matter if they are in Iraq or the US? Yemeni courts would likely agree with Anwar Awlaki that Fort Hood is a legitimate target of jihad.

Awlaki goes further and defines ordinary Americans as sanctioned victims of terrorism. Awlaki was joyous in praising Umar Farouk Abdulmutalla, who tried to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Dec. 25. Exploding a jet plane in mid air is legitimate under Islamic law, he says, because "the American populace is living within a democratic regime and they hold the responsibility of its policies.” Awlaki defines all Americans civilians as worthy of a death sentence because they are “participant in all the crimes of their government."

Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh openly supports many external resistance groups. Hamas and Hezbollah both have official offices in Yemen. A variety of other regional death cults maintain informal offices.

(London, England) The rules of the British National Health Service (NHS) now formally recognize that NHS workers who are Muslims are more equal than those who are Christians.

The Department of Health will allow female Muslim staff to opt out of a strict NHS dress code to cover their arms and protect their modesty.

But campaigners warn that the NHS is putting lives at risk because guidance that all staff should be 'bare below the elbow' was introduced after long sleeves were blamed for spreading MRSA.

The change has been brought in after some female Muslims objected to being forced to bare their arms on wards. The Department of Health has also relaxed its no jewellery rule to let Sikhs wear their Kara bangles as long as they can be pushed up to the elbow when dealing with patients.

The policy is in stark contrast to the treatment of nurse Shirley Chaplin who last week lost her discrimination battle against Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital Trust which claimed the cross she wore round her neck was a 'hazard' in case it scratched patients.

Last night she accused the NHS of 'double standards.' She added: 'What can you say? It seems that life is stacked up against Christians these days.'

She also pleaded guilty to two counts of having unlawful sex with a minor in an April 2008 case involving a 16-year-old student.

Prosecutor Rita Peters said Ragusa had intercourse with the 14-year-old on three occasions between October 2006 and May 2007. [...]

Peters said the encounters with the other teen began when he was 15. They ended when she was arrested in April 2008 as she was leaving his home.

If you want to know the truth, I've found a lot of Obama's foreign policy quite rational and I might even have to admit that, looked at individually, many of them make sense.

But there's a meta-narrative going on here as well, and foreign policy cannot be broken down to a bunch of discrete and unconnected actions: they also send signals.

Add many of Obama's policies together and the signal being sent to terror supporting states like Syria is that we are much less apt to respond should they attack Israel. Not that Israel needs protection from us, but to the Mad Mullahs and their puppets in Damascus the only thing keeping Israel from utter destruction is our protection.

Mad because in reality the only thing keeping the Israelis from completely annihilating their enemies is our protection ... of Israel's enemies!

In the meanwhile, Sheikh Abu Bakr Ben Farid al-Awlaki, a sheikh in Shabwah province, denied that there was a tribal forum in al-Awalek’s tribe, regarding Anwar al-Awlaki. A statement, allegedly attributed to the al-Awalek tribes, had been distributed to Yemeni media outlets warning against any cooperation with America in helping arrest or kill al-Awlaki. Ben Farid said that his tribe’s stand is the same as the state’s and that they are avoiding any further confrontations with the state. “We do not know al-Awlaki’s whereabouts,” said Ben Farid to NewsYemen website.

Violent jihad supporters have Facebook accounts, I don't. You see, Facebook suspended my account today. I've no idea why.

Well, actually, I have a few guesses as to why. You see, some of the Jawas here have been messing with terrorist supporters on Facebook. Over the last few days several prominent Facebook pages dedicated to radical Islam have been suspended because Stable Hand, Howie, and others have filed complaints.

They've also pulled some funny pranks on these terror supporters, such as posting offensive photos.

I suppose this is payback in the minds of the Facebook jihadis. Even though I had nothing to do with the flagging operation or the pranks, I am kind of the symbol of the enemy to these would-be terror supporters.

If having your Facebook page is the price to pay for making the right kind of enemies, so be it.

The only other thing I can think of is that Facebook is pissed off at the dozens of posts we've put up pointing out that terrorists and their supporters use Facebook. The al-Qaeda inspired forums are so yesterday, Facebook is the place for the the terrorist in crowd these days.

I've appealed the decision, but I have no idea how Facebook adjudicates disputes like this. I'm not hopeful, nor am I terribly upset. I only bring this up by way of apology to my many many Facebook friends who may be wondering where I went and to point out that Facebook, like so many internet social networking sites that depend solely on user complaints for policing, has unwittingly become a tool of some very dangerous people.

At least one RPG and AK-47 clearly seen before permission to fire given. The pilots then mistake camera slings for AK-47 slings, but the Reuters photographers were clearly with Mahdi Army insurgents.

On one thing I will agree with the highly edited and editorialized version of the Wiki Leak video seen by the 90% of viewers cited by Colbert: the first casualty in war is indeed the truth.

As to whether or not Colbert wasn't serious with his questions? I dunno, I guess it's possible that this was just part of the shtick, but I think not.

However, the larger point Ed makes might be the one that Colbert himself makes when he argues that Assange is being disingenuous about just wanting "the truth" out there since 90% of people won't actually take the time to view the entire unedited video so they are bound to believe the "murder" charge.

Perhaps by not knowing which parts of Colbert's interview are shtick and which parts are serious criticism of Assange, the casual viewer will be left with the impression that there is some validity to Assange's charges? I hope not.

Clearly, Assange has an agenda and that agenda is hostile to the United States and its military. I think Colbert knows this, but I can only hope his viewers do too.

George Galloway's entourage has been attacked by "students" of a controversial Muslim leader, the politician's spokesman has said.

The Respect party candidate for Poplar and Limehouse was campaigning in Watney Market, east London, when three men allegedly abused and lunged at him.

The spokesman said that the trio pushed members of the group and would have attacked Mr Galloway if they could.

Anjem Choudary, ex-leader of Islam4UK, said the claim was "fabricated".

He said the men were his former students who had studied the Islamic religion with him, but refused to say if they were former members of the now-banned Islam4UK group.

Police arrested and bailed three men on suspicion of behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

The alleged incident took place at about 1500 BST on Saturday. No one was injured.

Mr Galloway's spokesman said: "There were three characters who were shouting abuse.

"They were shouting 'kafir' [a derogatory word for non-believer], which is very insulting, and that Mr Galloway deserved to die.

Behind the wheel is Air Force Senior Airman Kayla Manning, from Detachment 2 of the 732nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron. Before missions, she almost doubles her weight when she dons her battle gear.

While climbing into this life-saving vehicle, Manning has to place one knee on the MRAP's steps to hoist her weight upward to climb into the vehicle. But despite a stature of just over 5 feet 2 inches, she possesses the power, control and confidence of someone twice her size.

"This is my Big Bertha," said Manning, who is deployed from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. "Before arriving in Iraq, we were trained on smaller vehicles. Once we arrived here, I was assigned to drive this big beast. Believe it or not, I drive better in this vehicle than the smaller ones."

Personally any man that produces offspring like this.

Five people suffering serious burns were hospitalized in West New Delhi this week from contact with radioactive material in a Delhi scrap market identified as Cobalt-60 which may be used for making a dirty bomb. Scrap dealer Deepak Jain and his helpers lost consciousness when they cut a piece of scrap metal. A white fluid oozed out causing the burns, Jain’s hair fell out and within minutes his skin turned black.

Taliban militants in Afghanistan are threatening to kill two kidnapped French journalists unless their demands are met, including the release of some detainees held by France.

In a video posted online, the journalists, who were kidnapped in December, are shown in separate clips.

Speaking in English and French, one reads a lengthy statement saying that if "this interview" is not aired on French TV, the journalists will be killed, along with their translator and driver. No other voices are heard in the video, only those of the two journalists.

"The French president, Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy, must understand that we are now in danger of death. I repeat: the French president much negotiate very quickly. Otherwise, we will be executed soon," he says.

France 3 Television -- which had not previously identified its two missing journalists -- identified them Monday as Herve Ghesquiere and Stephane Taponnier.

Realize that attacking the non-believers in their territories is a collective duty (fardh kifayah) with the consensus of the scholars. However ibn al Musayeb and ibn Shubrumah state that it is a duty (fardh ayn) on each and every individual.

The Imam al Haramain says, ‘I adopt the opinion of the scholars of usool. They stated that Jihad is a mandatory call and must be established according to the ability until none remains in the world but a Muslim or one who has submitted to Muslims. Thus, Jihad is not limited to once a year. It should be done more frequently if possible. What the scholars of fiqh stated is because usually the time spent in preparations for combat limit the ability to wage war to once a year.’

Ibn Qudaamah writes in al-Mugni, ‘The minimum Jihad is once a year, so it is mandatory every year. If there is a need to fight more than once a year, it becomes mandatory on the Muslims to fulfil that need.”

Al Qurtubi states in his Tafseer: “It is mandatory on the Imam to send an army of Muslims to the land of the enemy once every year and the Imam should participate himself in such expeditions. If not, then he should send someone capable whom he trusts, to call them to Islam, keep away their harm, to give victory to the religion of Allah, until they enter Islam or pay jizyah.”

Jihad is not mandatory on children, the mentally incapable, women, and the ill. It is mandatory however, on the one-eyed, the one who is suffering from a mild illness such as a headache, a sore tooth, or fever, or the one who has a slight limp. This is in the madhab of Imam Ahmad, and I don’t know any disagreement regarding that and Allah knows best.

It is the consensus of scholars that one cannot participate in Qazw (offensive pursuit of the enemy) without the permission of the parents.

This is all regarding the Jihad, which is Kifayah - a collective duty - (starting war with the non-believers on their territory). But if the enemy enters the Muslim land, or even approaches it and masses on its borders, even if they do not actually enter it, and their armies are double the size of that of the Muslims or less, then Jihad becomes mandatory on each and every individual. Then, the slave leaves without the permission of the master, the woman without the permission of her husband (if she has the strength to fight according to the stronger opinion), the son without the permission of the parents, and the one indebt without the permission of the lender. All of the above stated is the opinion of Imam Malik, Ahmad, and Abu Hanifah (in addition to the madhab of the author which is Shafi’i).

If the enemy ambushes the Muslims in a certain area and they don’t have a chance to assemble together and prepare to fight, then whoever is faced by a nonbeliever, or a group of non-believers, and the Muslim knows that if he surrenders he would be killed, then he must fight. There is no difference in this ruling between a freeman, slave, man, woman, blind, limp, or ill. If there is only the possibility of being killed if surrendered, but would defiantly be killed if he refuses to surrender, then it is allowed to either surrender or fight, but fighting is better. If a woman thinks if she is taken prisoner she would be sexually abused, it is mandatory on her to fight, even if that would lead to her death because if a person is forced to commit adultery or fornication it is not allowed to give in even if to save one’s life.

Now if some of the Muslims in the attacked area go to fight the enemy and they are sufficient in numbers and are capable of fighting the enemy alone, it is still a duty on the rest to help. Al Mawardi states that because it is a Jihad of defense so it remains a duty on every Muslim capable of fighting in that territory.

If the nonbelievers descend on an unpopulated Muslim land that is far away from populated areas there are two opinions in that, and Al Gazali narrates both. The first is that of the Imam al Haramain. He states that it does not become mandatory on Muslims to fight and put their lives in danger to protect such a secluded, unpopulated land. The other opinion, which is the position of the madhab, is that it is mandatory for Muslims to fight for that land. Imam Nawawi says the opinion of the Imam (of al Haramain, al Juwaini) is unacceptable.

How can we - the Muslims - allow the non-Muslims to take away part of the Dar al Islam (Land of Islam) with our ability to protect it?

Al Qurtubi say, ‘If the enemy just comes close to Muslim territory, even without entering it, it becomes mandatory on Muslims to go and meet the enemy in order for the religion of Islam to prevail and gain the upper hand and to humiliate the enemy.’

Al Baghawi states that, ‘It is mandatory on the Muslims who are closest to the invaded land, and is collective duty on the Muslims who are far away.’

If you scroll down a little more than half way, you will see what Wikileaks claims are the last two photos taken by Namir Noor-Eldeen. The first of two photos is a standard shot you see from many ‘real’ photo journalists. It’s the Poor Civilians Seen Through Bullet Hole Riddled Glass shot.

The streets are completely empty, which is what piqued the helicopter pilots' interest in the first place: what were a group of men doing on the streets during a security sweep in which firefights are taking place?

So, Wiki Leak would have you believe women and children are around while the bullets are firing. They're not. Just, more deception on Wiki Leak's part.

Later we clearly see an AK-47 and an RPG, which means that these are definitely Mahdi Army insurgents, who the US has been battling all morning. The Reuters stringers are embedded with them. The helicopter pilots, understandably, mistake the camera slings for gun slings.]

The photo appears to have been taken during the first seconds of the attack.

You may have noted that the name of the first photo is 1.jpg and the name of the second photo is 5.jpg, which made me question where did photos 2 through 4 go?

Then I remembered from the CENTCOM released a 15-6 investigation in which they too had released some of Namir’s final photos. These photos do not show distressed civilians through broken window:

d. Photos later recovered from the camera show a US Army HMMWV sitting at an intersection, less than 100 meters away from the camera. The digital time/date stamp on the photo indicates that these photos were the ones taken as the cameraman peered from behind the wall (Exhibit R).

Now, according to the Army, those THREE photos were taken just moments before the Apache was cleared to fire. This seems to go along with how a Reuters map described the scene of the attack, which was then published by Wikileaks.

So, what do we have here? A bit of a discrepancy. Where did the two women and broken glass come from? Were they in the same area as the attack? Did Namir take that photo in the barely one minute after he took the Humvee photo, but before the Apache opened fire? Is someone lying here? There are many ways this might play out, but I am going to lay out what I see as the most likely scenarios.

1. The Army is lying. The photos of the Humvee and the time stamp claim are pure whitewash. Those photos weren’t taken at the time and place described in the video

2. Wikileaks is lying. Wikileaks is in possession of all of the photos. The three photos named 2,3 and 4 are of the humvee, but Wikileaks withheld it because it goes against the narrative they supplied that the journalists were nowhere near US forces at the time they were attacked.

3. No one is lying. We do not know where Wikileaks received their information. It could be possible that they have never seen the humvee photos. It could be possible that the Army deleted them from the camera’s memory card. Many things are possible, but at this point I trust the Army 15-6 investigation more than I trust the agenda driven, fame seeking Euroweenies or Wikileaks.

Just to add some final confusion to the scene, Wikileaks does publish one last photo.

Rusty's comments: What could explain the numbering discrepancy is that it's common practice to rename photos once you download them from a camera or flash card. The original photo probably would have been named "DSC" followed by a long string of numbers. If Wiki Leaks follows the practice I use, then #1 - #5 would just have been the order they uploaded the selected photos from the flash card to a designated folder.

But, that doesn't explain the misleading captioning of the photos. The one photo of the two Shia women could not possibly have been taken when Wiki Leak claims.

This fits in with the general sloppiness of the Wiki Leak "investigation" and the way they carefully omit important pieces of information in order to give misleading context to the casual reader.

And context is everything, because depending on the context pictures do lie.

For instance, imagine if you will a picture of a crowd of people at a protest, one of which is holding a placard with a Nazi swastika on it. A caption reading, "Nazi swastika seen at anti-government rally" would lead the reader to believe that there were Nazi sympathizers at the rally.

However, the same picture with a different caption makes all the difference in the world: "Anti-government protesters called the President a fascist and compared his policies to those of Nazi Germany today".

Yes, pictures do lie. The context is everything.

Update by Stable Hand Could this be the same woman as the one above? The "Magic Bullets" lady? The photog, Wissam al-Okaili, was famous for images of people behind broken glass, etc. Most of his work Bullet Lady images magically deleted after this faux bullet incident.

Dumb because it totally misses the nature of the insurgency as it was in 2007. The insurgency was made up of three distinct separate insurgency movements. One Shia (the Mahdi Army), one religious Sunni (al Qaeda in Iraq, the Islamic Army in Iraq, etc), and one secular but distinctly Sunni (1920s Revolution Brigades, Naqushabandi Sufi Army).

To be a member of one insurgency group was not to be insulated from terrorist threat, but would make you more likely to be threatened by members of the other insurgency groups. Again, in 2007 much of the violence was between Shias targeting Sunnnis and vice versa.

Our position is that the dead photographer was embedded with Shia insurgents of the Mahdi Army. This would only be possible if they knew him and trusted him. And, if true, would also make it more likely -- not less -- that his family would be targeted.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia – Indonesian police raided a home used by suspected terrorists Monday in the far western province of Aceh, fatally shooting a man allegedly involved in the beheadings of three Christian girls.

Two other suspects were arrested at the house in Cot Irie village on the outskirts of Banda Aceh, said Col. Esa Permadi, chief detective of Aceh police. Interrogations of the men led to another raid in which two more suspects were detained, he said.

The men are allegedly members of al-Qaida in Aceh, a splinter of Jemaah Islamiyah, the Southeast Asian offshoot of al-Qaida blamed for deadly bombings in Indonesia in recent years.

The Sheik of the Awlaki tribe in Yemen denied that tribal leaders held a meeting regarding Anwar Awlaki or threatened Yemeni citizens as is being widely reported in the Western media.

Reuters reported receiving a faxed statement last week from the Awalki tribe that said, "We warn against cooperating with America to kill Sheikh Anwar al-Awlaki” after the Obama administration announced that it authorized operations to kill or capture Anwar Awlaki, who holds duel Yemeni American citizenship.

News Yemen, a reliable independent news website, interviewed the head of the Awlaki tribe, Sheik bin Fareed, who denied a statement was issued. “We haven’t held any meeting of our tribe regarding Anwar Awalki. What has been published doesn’t reflect our tribe's attitude,” the Sheik said

Sheik bin Fareed said his tribe is loyal to the government, and that they are working to keep their tribe from becoming embroiled in any acts of violence or revenge. “We can’t let government down,” he said.

Sheik bin Fareed added that the responsibility for the arrest of Anwar Awalaki lies with the government’s forces, not the tribe's, saying, “We don’t know where Awlaki is. The government is the one who knows where Anwar Awlaki is and is capable to arrest him, because she is responsible for that.”

Reuters reported the "heavily armed" Awalki tribe warned it would "not remain with arms crossed if a hair of Anwar al-Awlaqi is touched, or if anyone plots or spies against him." The purported statement also said that tribal leaders held a meeting and denounced "the reckless act by the U.S. government to allow the killing of the brave sheikh."

Reuters employs President Saleh’s personal translator as a stringer in Yemen, and its reporting is often biased in favor of the Yemeni government.

Awlaki is noted as al Qaeda’s primary propagandist to the English speaking world. In a 2010 audio, Awlaki urged American Muslims to commit jihad against the US. Awlaki has been in contact with several English speaking losers who later committed violent acts, including Nidal Hassan, Farouk Abdulmatallab and Sharif Mobley. Awlaki is relatively unknown in Yemen. His father is one of President Saleh's cronies and previously held the posts of Agriculture Minister and head of Sana’a University. Yemeni authorities have described Anwar Awlaki as a preacher not a terrorist.

Awlaki is thought to have morphed from a pamphleteer to an operational al Qaeda cultist after his release from jail in 2007. The non-governmental al Tagheer reported that Awlaki returned to Shabwa and “started preaching to people in the mosque every Friday and began to recognize a group of young people and meet them.” USS Cole bomber Fahd al Quso lives in the same area of Shabwa. Al Quso was convicted in Yemeni court and sentenced to ten years in jail. The 2000 terror attack on the USS Cole in the port of Aden killed 17 US service members and wounded 49. Al Quso was released after three years in prison, despite having escaped once.

On Dec. 24, Yemeni warplanes, using U.S. intelligence help, bombed a meeting of senior al-Qaida figures at al Quso’s farm. Awlaki and other al-Qaida top leaders left the meeting hours before the strike, giving rise to speculation that they were tipped off by compromised elements within the Saleh regime.

Yemen was aptly described by the LA Times as “a surreal world of spin, lies and propaganda (that) makes one wonder if reality exists at all in this cruel and beautiful land.” The Yemeni government regularly issues outright lies or manipulates the news. The Saleh regime reported the death of al Qaeda cult member Ammar Al Waeli in January. He was later spotted recruiting for the Al Qaeda cult in the war torn northern Sa’ada governorate. Al Qaeda leader Qasim al Reimi was also reported dead, three times, although he is not.

This is good news, because Poland is a country which has soldiers in Afghanistan. Rather than the mujahideen killing these kuffar, Allah has done it for them in a manner which is easier.

As your President's soul enters a ditch from Hellfire, in sha'a Allah, along with his advisors and his family, you now have an oppurtunity to rethink your failing operations in Afghanistan.

The only thing you can accomplish in Afghanistan is the oppression of an impoverished people. You can kill innocents and prolong the lifespan of the single most corrupt government on the face of the Earth so long as Allah allows you, but while you do this your citizens will die and your country will remain a fair target in the eyes of the Muslims.

Two Italian doctors are among nine people detained in an alleged plot to kill an Afghan provincial governor, officials said Saturday.

Their detentions follow the discovery of suicide bomb vests, hand grenades, pistols and explosives in a hospital storeroom in Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern province of Helmand, a spokesman for the provincial government said.

Police were tipped off about a plot to kill Helmand's governor during a future visit to the hospital, spokesman Daud Ahmadi said.

The mine disaster happened about an hour and 15 minutes from my location. This has been one of the better responses to the Westboro nutjobs. The community supporting the miners' families came out and counter protested because the families could not.

Hundreds of protesters from the mountain state worked to cover up the Westboro group's signs that said "God Hates West Virginia" and "Thank God For Dead Miners."

Brittany Bailey, whose father is a miner from Pineville, said "Just because they passed away doesn't mean God is punishing us. God is love. He's love, not hate. This is stupid."

(April 10) -- Poland's president, his wife and some of the country's most prominent military and civilian leaders died this morning when their plane crashed while coming in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia.

Russian and Polish officials gave differing death tolls but agreed there were no survivors.

President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria were heading to Russia's Smolensk region to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, where Soviet secret police killed thousands of Polish officers during World War II.

InterAct Theatre Company continues its long-time relationship with Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-nominated playwright Blessing with the new work, which will open April 14.

Commissioned by InterAct in 2008, When We Go Upon the Sea is set in a high-end hotel room at The Hague, and imagines Bush on the eve of his trial for international war crimes. "Tended to by an inscrutable Dutch butler and an alluring masseuse, the President embarks on a long night of drinking, joking, and ruminating, taking the audience through a deep exploration of how we regard our leaders - loving them, fearing them, unintentionally deifying them," according to InterAct notes.

BAGHDAD (AP) — An al-Qaeda front group claimed Friday that it carried out triple suicide bombings outside foreign embassies, underscoring U.S. and Iraqi fears the terror group is attempting to make a comeback.

t also said "all diplomatic corps, embassies and international organizations" dealing with the Iraqi government are "legitimate targets." The group denied involvement with another attack this week, when bombs ripped through apartment buildings and a market, killing at least 50 people, in mostly Shiite areas of Baghdad.

Iraqi security officials, however, blamed al-Qaeda for both bombings, as well as execution-style shootings of villagers one week ago as gunmen went door-to-door in a Sunni area just south of Baghdad. About 120 people were killed in all three attacks.

Yemen’s National Dialog Committee published an English language summary of its National Salvation Plan yesterday. The document is available at the Yemen Vision website. The National Dialog Committee (NDC) is an important Yemeni civil society coalition dedicated to creating a forum and consensus on a peaceful route to popular empowerment.

The National Dialog Committee is comprised of members of the opposition party alliance, the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) along with independents, some of the ruling General People’s Congress party members and prominent social figures including political leaders, tribal sheiks, businessmen and intellectuals. It is headed by Mr. Mohammed Salem Basandwah, an adviser to President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The JMP’s Hamid Al-Ahmer is its Secretary General. The group is dedicated to building a national consensus on the issues facing Yemen and implementing solutions through peaceful means.

Yemen is a hyper-political state where benefit accrues from proximity to President Saleh, his family and his tribesmen who control much of the military and security forces, the economy and political system. The high degree of cronyism means that state bureaucracies are dysfunctional and corrupt. Basic services are nearly absent and the black market is thriving. Yemen’s water shortage gave rise to water barons who thwart implementation of water strategies. Land theft by officials is overt and further centralizes the economy. The rule of law is absent; the powerful flout the law and the weak are subject to retaliatory verdicts. Yemeni children are the second most malnourished globally and half of Yemenis are under 24 years old.

The JMP faces criticism on the street as “the other face of the regime,” interested in retaining power, corrupt, disconnected from the citizenry, and restricting itself to complaining without opposing due to the Saleh government’s brutality. The political party system is dominated by historical personalities, rebuffing the energy of Yemen’s youthful population. However some members of the JMP have made dedicated efforts to expand the horizons of hope in Yemen, often with tragic consequences.

Years of Reform Efforts Blocked

The opposition Joint Meeting Parties contains ideologically diverse political parties joined together in a pragmatic quest, the rescue of Yemen. The architect of the rapprochement between the Yemeni Socialist Party and the Islamic Reform Grouping, Jarallah Omar, was assassinated in 2002 by a fundamentalist who, authorities claim, was working alone.

In 2005, it became obvious that economic reform was vital to the survival of the nation. Depleting oil coupled with rampant corruption and abuse of power had distorted Yemen’s economy to the point where only a handful benefited from natural resources and foreign aid, unemployment was staggering and development stalled. But economic reform was contingent on political reform, the opposition parties found, as powerful interests continually blocked efforts to rationalize the economy. The JMP released a reform initiative calling for the establishment of a Parliamentary system of governance.

They were soon to learn that if economic reform is contingent on political reform, then political reform is contingent on electoral reform. In the 2006 elections, members of the ruling party had overwhelming advantage in local elections, and President Saleh won his re-election handily against his rival, Faisal bin Shamlan. The JMP agreed not to dispute the election’s results in exchange for an agreement with the GPC to overhaul the electoral system. Recommendations from the European Union’s Mission to Yemen were to be the starting point.

Following the election, Salah’s regime rounded up activists who campaigned for the opposition candidate, imprisoning some and firing others from civil service jobs. Electoral reform stalled when the JMP and GPC could not agree on the terms or scope of negotiations. The JMP also insisted on the release of political prisoners prior to discussions.

The Vision of Salvation

Yemen has since seen two brutal wars in northern Sa’ada and an exploding anti-government sentiment in the south provinces that eventually morphed into an independence movement, largely due to the states brutal response to the peaceful protests.

With electoral reform stalled in Yemen, and civil unrest threatening to drive the state to failure, the National Dialog Committee formed a broad coalition among predominant social groups to devise a plan for “National Salvation.” The grouping finds the central issue is “the personalization of the state” that has devolved into a clan-based structure dedicated to retaining power and acquiring personal wealth. In the absence of a functional parliament the NDC’s strategy for Yemen relies on a conference representing the people of Yemen and their communities.

The NDC noted the “blocking horizons of any change through free and fair elections, obstructing the principle of the peaceful transfer of power, destruction of the plural political system, diminishing the democratic project and civic live pillars, seizure of public freedoms and rights, strangulation of free press, generation and fueling of violence, fanaticism, hatred and all forms of political conflicts, tribal feuds and battles and local violence.”

The committee found both the Saada War and Southern protest movement arose from the centralization of the state. The economic crisis ruthlessly crushing the vast majority of Yemenis is a product of the Saleh regime which dealt with natural resources and national wealth as “gain to be shared among the oligarchic group, their relatives and affiliates.”

The report continues, “The hand of corruption was unleashed and the mafia of illegal interests dominated. Hence, corruption, unfortunately, became a regular practice to manage the country and a tool to monopolize, own and secure power as well as inheriting it to the sons thereafter. The development process and plans became merely tools to seize national wealth and an element for political propaganda.” The deterioration of education, health services, private investment and the squandering of donor aid accompanied the downward spiral.

The coalition suggests treating the hotspots of instability as a first step toward reversing the collapse of the Yemeni state recommending the immediate cessation of state violence, campaigns of arrest and the release of political prisoners. The NDC invited the northern rebels, southern separatists and opposition abroad as well as the ruling authority to a national conference, much to the consternation of the GPC which has labeled all of its opposition as unpatriotic apostates.

Not everyone accepts the Committee as a legitimate effort. General Nassar al Nuba, Head of the Military Retired Association which initiated the southern protests in 2007, said in an emailed statement that the JMP’s efforts to organize protests in solidarity with besieged southerners is a ploy cooked in the “kitchen of influential people who seized the fortunes and wealth of the south with a view to occupancy opinion external public about what is going in the land of the south and attempt to confuse the issue, the South, which imposed itself on the table of international conferences and has become a just cause and political distinction.”

Equal Opportunity for All

With regard to growing calls for southern independence the NDC sees the need to “remove the impacts of 1994 war through a comprehensive national settlement leading to resolving the southern cause with its righteous and political dimensions fairly and comprehensively putting the south in its natural position as party in the national equation and as a real partner in power and wealth in a national partnership state. This is a critical entry point for a comprehensive national solution for the aggravating situation under which the vast majority of people in all parts of the country live.” It’s easier said than done.

Among several strategies to accomplish the decentralization of the state power are the prohibition of family members of the president or prime minister to assume any of the nation’s top posts including in the judiciary, military and intelligence. Senior state officials should be banned from any commercial, financial or industrial activities, and from buying or selling state properties, and from bidding for state contracts.

The establishment of a Parliamentary system is one option for decentralization but the group does not exclude consideration of proposals by other parties to the dialog. Reform of the judiciary, the electoral system and civil service are other essential components. Free and fair elections are a fundamental requirement to entrench pluralism and the peaceful transfer of power.

Among the economic and social reforms included in the proposal is the empowerment of women, a topic that receives a one line treatment. Yemen is ranked in last place globally in terms of gender equality by the World Economic Forum. In the highly gender segregated society, women have social, physical and legal obstacles in efforts to support their children economically, gain an education or participate politically. About half of Yemeni women marry before age 15, usually to an older man, and 70% of women are illiterate, resulting in perpetual dependency.

Obstacles to consensus

Obstacles to developing a national consensus are many; among the foremost is state domination of broadcast media. The NDC finds that implementation of the strategy includes both communicating the national crises to the citizenry, and creating mechanism for dialog and consensus building.

Furthermore over 70% of Yemenis live in rural communities, and half of those have no electricity, meaning they are out of touch with each other and the nation’s elite. Parliamentary representatives are often tribal Sheiks, reinforcing an unresponsive patriarchal system. Many MP’s do not have an office in their districts or make regular visits to assess the concerns of their constituencies. Local councils are another arm of the Saleh regime.

The NDC recognizes the need to develop mechanisms of “qualitative communications, intellectual and media interaction to expand the scope of support for the salvation, change and national development and reforms solutions reaching to a stage where a national community-based framework is formed with peoples’ support encompassing all elements of the Yemeni society to work as a guardian for the state from collapse.”
