In today's NYTimes, former Vice President Al Gore weighs in on the global warming debate by asserting that a scientific consensus on the issue has been achieved, despite minor problems with data manipulation which resulted from "make-work demands from climate skeptics."

In three pages, Gore repeatedly blames unrestrained exploitive capitalism for the impending demise of the planet. The answer to the climate crisis, he says, is cap and trade legislation enacted immediately to stave off unimaginable calamity.

And for a quotable nugget regarding cap and trade, Gore provides:

From the standpoint of governance, what is at stake is our ability to use the rule of law as an instrument of human redemption.

Mr. Gore seemingly imagines himself as providing the path to redemption for all people. Quite theological, eh?

In any event, Mr. Gore's piece is largely three pages of attacks on capitalism and questionable scientific and economic assertions apparently pulled out of thin air before concluding with a The-End-Is-Near plea for cap and trade legislation. In other words, the piece is pretty much the same old shoe polish.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — The Pakistani Taliban released a video of their militant chief, Hakimullah Mehsud, but his taped comments fail to prove he survived a U.S. missile strike earlier this year.

U.S. and Pakistani officials have become increasingly confident that the brash militant commander died of wounds from a drone-fired missile in mid-January, but the Pakistani Taliban have denied he was killed.

At the same time, the militants have said they felt no responsibility to definitively prove he's alive.

Hardline Islamist fundamentalist radicals are quietly infiltrating political parties in the United Kingdom with the aim of transforming British society and implementing sharia law. From the Telegraph:

The Islamic Forum of Europe (IFE) — which believes in jihad and sharia law, and wants to turn Britain and Europe into an Islamic state — has placed sympathisers in elected office and claims, correctly, to be able to achieve “mass mobilisation” of voters.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Jim Fitzpatrick, the Environment Minister, said the IFE had become, in effect, a secret party within Labour and other political parties.

We have established that the group and its allies were awarded more than £10 million of taxpayers’ money, much of it from government funds designed to “prevent violent extremism”.
IFE leaders were recorded expressing opposition to democracy, support for sharia law or mocking black people. The IFE organised meetings with extremists, including Taliban allies, a man named by the US government as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and a man under investigation by the FBI for his links to the September 11 attacks.

George Galloway, a London MP, admitted in recordings obtained by this newspaper that his surprise victory in the 2005 election owed more to the IFE “than it would be wise – for them – for me to say, adding that they played a “decisive role” in his triumph at the polls.

An amputee missing both legs was arrested Thursday after police said he was wheeled into a busy New York City train station and planted a bomb.

Police found the bomb before it could detonate, but the discovery interrupted regional train lines briefly and closed the station for several hours.

The alleged device—a bag of small explosives wrapped in shotgun shells, along with bullets, glue, lug nuts, pens and a ruler—was left in a waiting area at a station in Harlem. Police later surveyed security videos to identify suspects including, Roosevelt Terry, the amputee.

Quake hit at 3:30 am. Early reports say 82 have been killed.

According to US Geological Survey (AOL News)

The U.S. Geological Survey put the temblor at an 8.8-magnitude, with two dozen aftershocks in the hours afterward, including one that was 6.9-magnitude. A quake of magnitude 8 or above is considered a "great" earthquake that can cause "tremendous damage," according to the USGS Web site. By comparison, the earthquake that devastated Haiti's capital last month was rated a magnitude 7.0.

Because the scale is exponential, today's seismic event was about 500 times more powerful than the one in Haiti. How much damage an earthquake actually makes depends not only on magnitude but also on depth, local geology, population density and building codes.

"This quake is much larger [than in Haiti], and it's occurring in an area that has a history of generating large quakes in the past," Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado, told AOL News. "I don't know if that [history] ultimately affected building codes [in Chile]. It's hard to project damage at this early stage."

A tsunami warning is in effect for neighboring countries of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica as well as farther-flung Hawaii, Australia, Russia and Pacific nations. A tsunami advisory was issued for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands, The Associated Press reported.

It seems the new Somali envoy to the US, Abukar Arman, is a big Al-Shabaab enthusiast. Arman has lived in the US for nearly 30 years, but is still a Somali citizen.

Arman has also moonlighted as a blogger at the Huffington Post. Just two months ago, before being appointed to the envoy position, Arman wrote an article where he urged amnesty for Al-Shabaab terrorists:

Fifth, offer confidence-building amnesty to key individual players who are on the US terrorist list, as these lists further radicalize people.

In 2006, Abukar Arman hailed the takeover by the Islamic Courts Union, "the best thing that happened to Somalia in the past 16 years." He is also a supporter of Hamas, writing on his personal blog a post entitled, "Hamas victory is a victory for democracy and peace!" And as Rusty noted back a few weeks ago, Arman is also an open advocate of the imposition of shariah law.

Prior to being named envoy for a foreign government, Arman was the president of CAIR-Columbus, the same group that was banned last year from speaking at the Columbus Police Academy after warnings from counterterrorism officials about the group's extremist ties.

But don't worry. The Columbus Dispatch assured its readers a while ago that Abukar Arman was not a terrorist. To their credit, the Dispatch editorial page editor took Arman to the woodshed in an editorial on Arman's attempts to suppress the free speech of critics.

UPDATE: No sooner had I published this then I did a search only to find that "reporter" Mark Ferenchik at the Columbus Dispatch published an article today giving the airbrush treatment to Arman's extremist views and his demands for amnesty for Al-Shabaab terrorists. Instead we're treated to the "moderate" Muslim and "interfaith" leader narrative. The one source for Mr. Ferenchik's article? One of Abukar Arman's friends and business partner. He notes in his article that Arman worked for the Columbus Public Schools, but forgets to mention that he was fired by the school district as soon as his extremist views were exposed.

Has the Ohio media turned Stalinist or something, where they just airbrush out anything controversial related to their Islamist friends? Apparently so. But considering the treatment that fellow reporter Meredith "Hijab" Heagney gave to the Rifqa Bary story, no one should be surprised.

The car bomb exploded outside a guesthouse popular with Indians while a team of attackers that included suicide bombers stormed another guesthouse frequented by Britons and Americans, starting a firefight with Afghan security forces that lasted for more than 90 minutes.

- The Obama administration may expand efforts to ease the housing crisis by banning all foreclosures on home loans unless they have been screened and rejected by the government’s Home Affordable Modification Program.

The proposal, reviewed by lenders last week on a White House conference call, “prohibits referral to foreclosure until borrower is evaluated and found ineligible for HAMP or reasonable contact efforts have failed,” according to a Treasury Department document outlining the plan.

“It is one of the many ideas under consideration in the administration’s ongoing housing stabilization efforts,” Treasury spokeswoman Meg Reilly said in an e-mail. “This proposal has not been approved and there are no immediate planned announcements on the issue.”

Today we were sent your story of February 14, 2010. The “unknown” Canadian is our son Danny. He is a 23-year-old soldier from Vancouver, Canada.

Your photographs were extraordinary and have impacted so many people here in Canada. There has been an outpouring of affection for the Americans who helped Danny in his moment of need. For that, we thank you for recording these acts of kindness into history.

Danny's injuries were the result of an explosion on February 12, 2010. Four Canadian soldiers were injured and tragically one Canadian soldier was killed. Within 20 minutes of the explosion, Danny was airlifted by helicopter to Kandahar. Upon arrival he received emergency surgery that saved his life and prepared him for the flight to Bagram that you were on.

After landing in Bagram, Danny was again airlifted by a US transport aircraft to the US Army run Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. There he underwent additional surgery that closed up his wounds. Once stabilized, the Canadian government dispatched a Challenger jet to bring him home. This afternoon in Vancouver, the shrapnel that did all the damage to him was finally removed. Danny is now recovering in hospital. [ rest...]

"The report finds that not all individuals are ensured full enjoyment of their rights irrespective of their positions on government policies," the human rights panel said. "The commission also finds that the punitive power of the state is being used to intimidate or punish people on account of their political opinions. Authorities are searching for 270 Somalis believed to have entered the U.S. illegally with the help of a Virginia man who admitted contacts with an Islamic terrorist group.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent said his agency had yet to locate any of the suspected illegal immigrants.

According to an affidavit filed in Alexandria's federal court, Anthony Joseph Tracy told authorities that he came in contact with the Somali terrorist organization Al-Shabaab, which announced an alliance with al Qaeda earlier this year.

ICE Agent Thomas Eyre testified during a hearing that authorities are "concerned" about the 35-year-old's dealings with the group.[no shite Sherlock]

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a member of the Taliban's high leadership council, and the other prisoners are "accused of criminal acts" in Afghanistan and will be extradited, according to a statement from the office of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Baradar and other Afghan militants will be extradited under a prisoner exchange agreement that is still being hammered out by both countries, according to Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik and an Afghan interior ministry spokesman.

Malik, who met with his Afghan counterpart and FBI director Robert Mueller on Wednesday, told reporters after that meeting that a treaty on the exchange would be completed in coming days, and that both nations were comparing prisoner lists and setting up a committee to oversee the process.

WASHINGTON -- A year ago, U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick was appointed to the House Intelligence Committee, a prestigious post she had long sought.

There, top-secret briefings unveiled truths about homegrown terrorism she had only suspected. And won't reveal.

"I can't tell you. I'm not being coy," Myrick said in an interview. "There's a threat out there to our security. ... It's worse than I thought."

Myrick, a Charlotte Republican and former mayor of the city, contends that extremists are working their way into U.S. Muslim communities, infiltrating government institutions and influencing American citizens to attack their own country. Her activism earns plaudits from some conservatives - but criticism from Muslim constituents who fear that her tone endangers a community 3 million strong and deeply imbedded in the nation's fabric. Tonight, months after pledging to do so, Myrick will meet with Charlotte's Muslim community.

The allegations damaged already sore relations with the Muslim community, said Larry Shaw of Fayetteville, national chairman for CAIR and a North Carolina state senator.

"It's looking like she's taking on a tinge of McCarthyism," Shaw said. "She's becoming a hatemonger."

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, Congress' only Muslim member, said he hopes tonight's meeting opens a dialogue.

"Some of the things that Rep. Myrick has said are deeply offensive and upsetting," said Ellison, a Democrat from Minnesota.

The son of one of Hamas’s founding members was a spy in the service of Israel for more than a decade, helping to prevent dozens of Islamist suicide bombers from finding their targets, it emerged yesterday.

He tracked down suicide bombers and their handlers from his father’s organisation, the Haaretz newspaper said.

I'm a Christian. Theologically, I'm a liberal. So much so that some theologically conservative and orthodox Christians would say that I'm not a Christian, but a heretic or something.

I do not take all of the Bible literally. Like the Genesis timeline. Or a worldwide flood. Or a hell that's literally filled with fire and brimstone and goes on forever.

Some parts of the Bible I do not consider scripture at all. I think the early Church Fathers just got some of the canon wrong. Like Song of Solomon. It's kind of hot, but it just doesn't work for me, even at the metaphor level. Like I really want to think of this dude as Christ, and his hot and lustful wife with nice hooters as the Church? Kinda creepy people. Kinda creepy.

I think my theology would fit in nicely with today's liberal Presbyterian church, which has long forgotten its Calvinist roots and today is more pick and chose.

So, I don't have a problem when Christians think differently than me on most subjects. I'm more of the type that thinks faith is shown through acts, not rigid adherence to theology.

But this? Come on. If the Bible is clear about anything it is the historical claims of the Jews to the land of Israel. You miss that and you've kind of missed 3/4 of the Old Testament.

We're not talking about minor points here. It's kind of a major deal.

So, can one be a Christian and believe that Israel is a historical fiction? I don't know for sure, but I'm inclined to believe no.

This kind of statement coming from an allegedly Christian church kind of reveals that it is no longer an organization run by Christians, but rather by liberal political activists.

A retired Saudi Arabian schoolteacher has been charged with providing the funds for the deadly attacks on two luxury hotels in Jakarta last July.

Al Khelaiw Ali Abdullah, 55, is accused of funnelling money through an internet cafe in West Java.

He is the fourth person to go on trial this month over the Jakarta bombings - along with the suspected driver, bag-man and helpers in the attacks.

The twin hotel suicide bombings killed seven people and injured 50 more.

The BBC's Indonesia correspondent Karishma Vaswani says that Mr Abdullah came to Indonesia from Saudi Arabia in November 2008.

Four civilians were killed when Taliban militants fired a rocket into a residential area of Peshawar in Pakistan's north-west, police said.

The dead included two brothers aged 17 and four, AFP news agency said.

Although rocket attacks are rare in Peshawar, the area has seen a spate of deadly militant attacks.

Yesterday Eric Holder held up the plea-bargain reached with al Qaeda trained terrorist Najibullah Zazi as a model of how the criminal justice system worked to thwart terror. He's right, in this case a subway bombing plot that could have killed hundreds was thwarted. And because Zazi is now cooperating several of his associates will probably go to jail.

Two friends from his Flushing, New York high school have been charged in connection with the plot. A Bosnian named Adis Medunjanin attended the al Qaeda camps with Zazi and an Afghan named Zarein Ahmedzay was also part of the plot.

But what Holder fails to mention is that the plot investigation was a botched one. By asking questions of Zazi's former imam, Zazi learned that the FBI was on to him. He was able to ditch the bomb making material and warn the others to do the same.

As Andy McCarthy notes over at NRO:

In any event, the positive development of Zazi’s guilty plea does not transform the case into a model. To the contrary, it remains a screw-up....

while the mistake does not condemn the civilian justice system, neither does the guilty plea establish anything conclusive about the effectiveness of the system. Even less does it demonstrate the system’s overall effectiveness against international terrorism....

Nobody is “trying to take this tool out of our hands.” Nobody is saying terrorism cases should never be tried in the civilian courts. The point of Bush counterterrorism was to correct the ineffective Clinton model, which treated international terrorism only as a crime, to be handled as such in all cases. It grossly oversimplifies the matter to say that the pre-9/11 error was to prosecute terrorism cases in civilian court. Rather, the error lay in (a) believing that we were dealing with mere crimes rather than a war, (b) therefore believing that all facets of terrorism, including atrocious acts of war, were fit for civilian prosecution, and (c) concluding that we could deter our enemies and protect our citizens with nothing more than civilian prosecution.

What the case does not do is inform us on how Khalid Sheikh Mohammad or any other Guantanamo detainee should be handled. We are fighting a war against al Qaeda and the Taliban. Congress has designated them the enemy. These enemies have been rounded up on the field of battle abroad by our military or intelligence agencies, or government's sympathetic to our cause. They are not common criminals who have been extradited by the Justice Department.

To treat those caught on the battlefield as criminals is to imagine that the hundreds of thousands of American men and women involved in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan were not at war.

Instead, they are just beat cops. Beat cops with tanks, but still beat cops.

We are at war. In war, the people you kill or capture are the enemy.

In no prior war have we transferred captured enemies back to the homeland. Even when those enemy combatants had committed war crimes -- as is clearly the case when speaking of Khalid Shiekh Mohammad and other al Qaeda members -- they have been tried over seas. After the war was over. By specially created war crimes tribunals. The Nuremberg Trials were military tribunals.

Personally, I favor Winston Churchill's idea of summary execution. It was a Democratic president, FDR, who suggested military tribunals. Oh how far the Democratic party has come!

The son of a jailed Hamas leader who converted to Christianity and moved to California has gone public to say that he spied for Israel.

Speaking before the release of a book about his life, Mosab Hassan Yousef made the assertion in an interview for Israel's Haaretz newspaper.

A former deputy head of Israel's Shin Bet intelligence service told BBC World Service he had been one of its agents.

But a Hamas leader dismissed the report as a slander on the Islamist group.

Mr Yousef, 32, is a son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a senior Hamas figure in the West Bank, who is currently serving a six-year prison sentence in an Israeli prison.

Carl in Jerusalem earlier noted this was just a "big show" and doesn't fully believe what Yousef is spewing. Either way, Hamas has doubts about their members.

My, I thought Sharia was only enforced in Iran/SA/etc.....silly me.

Fault one lies with France for actually applying the pressure necessary on Mali to release four al Qaeda members from their jails. I'm sure the four will go back to their peaceful lives of farming, fishing, and whatever.

But the second fault belongs to al-Reuters for calling the French hostage Pierre Camatte a "prisoner". Al Qaeda holds prisoners?

Camatte committed a crime, was prosecuted, and was serving a sentence as a prisoner?!?

He said he had thanked Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure for his handling of the crisis and pledged French support in the struggle against terrorism.

This is double maddening because the narrative put forth by al Qaeda and other Islamist groups is that all of the hostages they take are guilty of this or that crime. We take prisoners, they take prisoners. It's all the same.

Which is why they pronounce the hostages guilty before slitting their throats. If the hostage is Muslim, the "crime" is invariably apostasy (ie, working with the duly elected non-Islamist government of the country). If the hostage is non-Muslim, the allegation is over "war crimes" or "spying" (ie, driving a truck which supplies beer to the troops who may or may not be fighting al Qaeda; being non-Muslim).

Pierre Camatte's "crime"? Trying to bring humanitarian aid to Mali.

Of course we're happy that Cammatte is free. But when the four al Qaeda members now kill again, the guilt will be squarely on France and Mali's shoulders.

USS Farragut dispatched an SH-60B Seahawk helicopter to MV Barakaale 1 after it raised a distress call saying it was under attack from a gang on a skiff, the embassy said in a statement.

"The helicopter then stopped the ... skiff as it attempted to speed away, by firing warning shots across its bow," it said.

"A boarding team from USS Farragut boarded the vessel and the eight suspected pirates were taken aboard the Farragut."

Luke Air Force Base officials confirm that one man is dead and a second man was wounded after base security opened fire on two people in a stolen car that drove through a base gate.

The crash occurred at Northern Avenue and Litchfield Road at the entrance to the West Valley air base.

Thousands of Southern Yemenis marched in the funeral Monday of 28 year old Fares Zaid al Tamah, who died in police custody in Aden on January 30. Mr. al Tamah was allegedly tortured to death in the latest incident of escalating government violence against activists and protesters in Yemen.

Separatist sentiment is running high in southern Yemen where 70% of residents favor dissolution of the unified state. Activists claim they have been illegally occupied since 1994’s civil war while southern oil deposits and land were looted by the tribesmen and relatives of northern President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The deceased was arrested in Abyan in his Landcruiser, his relatives said, while he was listening to an audio of the singer Aboud Khawaga, whose material often includes political themes.

Mr. al Tamah was killed following three days of torture, activists allege. He was hung from the ceiling upside down for 12 hours, burnt with cigar butts and shocked with electricity, other prisoners in the Malla police station reported. On January 30, Mr. al Tamah was found dead on the floor in a pool of blood by visitors.

Stretching for miles, the funeral march began at Aljamohria hospital in Aden and concluded at the southern martyrs cemetery Radfan, Lahj . Mr. Al Tamah was buried alongside dozens of other southerners killed by Yemeni security forces.

Protests began in 2007 calling for equal rights and political inclusion and were met by mass arrests. Dozens of unarmed protesters have been killed by police in southern Yemen, Human Rights Watch found. A pattern of wide spread and brutal abuses characterized the state’s response to the growing protests, triggering a spiral of “repression, protests, and more repression.”

A report issued by a southern activist last week detailed 147 civilians killed by Yemeni security forces in the last year.

In November, Amnesty International issued a statement noting that "torture and other ill-treatment are widespread practices in Yemen and are committed, generally with impunity, against both detainees held in connection with politically motivated acts or protests and ordinary criminal suspects. Methods of torture and other ill-treatment are reported to include beatings all over the body with sticks, rifle butts, punching, kicking, prolonged suspension by the wrists or ankles, burning with cigarettes, being stripped naked, denial of food and prompt access to medical help, as well as threats of sexual abuse."

HOOD, a leading Yemeni civil rights advocacy group in Yemen, disclosed this week that it had obtained video evidence of prisoner torture at the Criminal Investigation Prison in Taiz province. Ammar al-Tayar, 23 years old, was in custody of the Shar'ab al-Salam Security after a family dispute on January 16, 2010. Al-Tayar alleged he was subjected to beatings, electric shock and burning at the prison by three men while he was blindfolded. The video tape revealed scars and other indications of the torture, which were on his upper region of the shoulders, back, fingers and different parts of his body.

The UN’s Committee against Torture found the “widespread practice of torture and ill-treatment” in Yemen. Yemen failed to appear as requested at the UN Committee’s examination.

Journalist Mohammed al Maqaleh described his four months of torture to a union representative in February as including severe beatings, mock executions and starvation. Amnesty International has repeatedly issued statements warning that southern editors Hasham, Hani and Mohammed Bashraheel are at risk of severe torture since their “arrest” in January.

three Sikh youths were beheaded by the Taliban in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) region after they allegedly refused to convert to Islam. Their severed heads were dumped at a gurudwara in Peshawar...

They were abducted by the Taliban militia. They were allegedly told by the Taliban to embrace Islam or face death. When the Sikh youth refused, their heads were chopped and sent to the Bhai Joga Singh Gurudwara in Peshawar.

I don't know a lot about the Sikh religion. What I was taught back in some undergrad college class or another was that the religion was started as a way to try to bring together Hindus and Muslims. That it aspired to be a middle ground between the intolerance of Islam for polytheism, and the unjust caste system of traditional Hinduism.

If this was a singular event you could easily set it aside as non-representative of what the Taliban and their traditionalist Hanafi version of Islam believe and practice. But it's not. The tradition of inviting people to Islam, and then killing them when they didn't goes right back to the example of Muhammad himself. And beheading people was one of his favorite ways of doing them in.

It is haraam to keep a dog unless it is for the purposes for which Islam permits keeping dogs. Whoever keeps a dog – except a dog for hunting or farming – his reward will decrease each day by one or two qeeraats.

The impurity of dogs is the greatest of animal impurities. The impurity of a dog can only be removed by washing seven times, one of which should be with earth. Even pigs, which the Qur’aan states are haraam and describes as an abomination (rijs) are not naajis (impure) to such an extent.

Dogs are impure and filthy, but unfortunately we find that some people are attracted to the ways of the kuffaar and their filthy habits, so they have started to keep dogs unnecessarily for no reason, keeping them, training them and cleaning them even though they can never be clean, even if they were washed with the waters of the ocean, because they are essentially impure.

Our advice to them is to repent to Allaah and to get the dogs out of their homes.

What happened to them? He ditched 'em:

Zazi — accused of receiving explosives training in an al-Qaida terror camp in Pakistan — told prosecutors that he was armed with bomb-making components while en route to New York City last year, but got rid of them along the way, the people said.

That last question being not so speculative. As soon as he got to New York he was pulled over and his car impounded. I suspect the FBI was looking for the bomb making components, but they found something which turned out to be of equal if not greater value: his laptop.

MIAMI - Mansor Mohammad "Mickey" Asad maintains his innocence despite pleading guilty Thursday to yelling anti-Semitic threats aboard a Delta Airlines plane at Miami International in January.

...It was a plead of convenience," Mr. Asad said by phone. "I've already been incarcerated over two months. I have children and expenses. I wanted to get back to ... Toledo."

Asad pleaded guilty Thursday in Miami-Dade Circuit Court to charges of disrupting a flight and quarreling with police. "I just decided to go ahead and take the plea and save money," he said.

Asad received three years' probation and was ordered to pay $27,500 in restitution to Delta. He also is to be placed on a federal "no-fly" list and will be barred from traveling by rail and other mass transport.

"He's not a terrorist. He's a family man, a good man. It just hurts what happened," Ms. Fruto said.

Ms. Asad, a Lourdes College graduate, called the charges against him "ridiculous," and said the allegations are not consistent with his personality.

"He's just a kind person and always looking out for others," she said. "I'm very upset. We're Arab and Muslim. I think he was singled out."

The win by the USA Men's hockey team over heavily favored Canada last night was pretty spectacular. But it doesn't remotely come close to the victory by the scrappy and vastly overmatched 1980 USA hockey team over the Soviet Union that occurred 30 years ago today - February 22, 1980. For those who were around to watch the game that Friday night, then watched the gold medal game against Finland that following Sunday morning, watching flag-draped goalie Jim Craig skating around looking for his dad in the stands afterwards and Mike Eruzione calling his entire team up on the tiny podium during the medal ceremony, you understand how magical that event was. That's why the Sports Illustrated cover that week (above) bore no text. No one in America needed to be told.

An anonymous tip led to the arrest of five men who allegedly planned to have DF’s Pia Kjærsgaard killed

Five men have been arrested in connection with death threats allegedly having been made against Danish People’s Party leader Pia Kjærsgaard.

Four of the five men were subsequently released by police, but the fifth remains in custody. The men are reportedly Somali and the man in custody is known to intelligence service PET, reported Politiken newspaper.

According to the Danish People’s Party (DF), a 500,000 kroner reward was offered in connection with carrying out the death threats against Kjærsgaard. The party indicated its head office received a letter written in English from an anonymous source with details about the planned hit and the suspects’ names.[..more]

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Administrators for the Lower Merion School District gave laptop computers to 2,300 students, each containing a remote-controlled webcam which allegedly allows spying on students at home.

One student's parents, Holly and Michael Robbins, have protested an incident of spying on their son, Blake, by filing a lawsuit in federal court.

"I don't feel that school has the right to put cameras inside the kids' home, inside their bedrooms and spy on children," Holly said.

The suit claims a Harriton High School official enabled the device, concerned the sophomore was "engaged in improper behavior in his home." An assistant principal later confronted the student, citing a photograph taken by the webcam as evidence.

"She thought I was selling drugs which is completely false," Blake said.

Nevertheless, privacy advocates are outraged and it's reported that the FBI is investigating for possible wiretap violations.

Megan Baumann

It seems Baumann liked her students a little too much. She was reportedly having relationships with multiple boys. So two girls, worried about her intimacy with a male student, ratted the teacher out to the principal.

But while Baumann apparently excels in the bed, she's not too good under interrogation. She was confronted and suspended that same day. She was also ordered to have no contact with the boys.

She apparently violated that order right away.

In another story this week, while Baumann was allegedly mixing it up with male students, it's alleged that a 26-year-old teacher and soccer coach in Wisconsin, Emily Patterson, rode the other bus.

Back to the Taliban vs. al Qaeda. Sure, the two are separate "organizations", but they share the same goals and the organizational boundaries between the two are fluid. From a strategic standpoint there is no real distinction of any importance.

Those who want to say that this is a "war on al Qaeda" -- like our current Sec. of Defense -- have really missed the entire point. In fact, the majority of jihadis in the West have been linked to other groups entirely. Especially Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. Both Pakistani groups with ties to al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Again, you can try to minimize the scale of the task ahead of us all you want, but doing so masks the enormity of it at the risk of national security.

Iraqi security forces have arrested an Al Qaeda operative suspected of recruiting women to carry out suicide attacks, the U.S. military and Iraqi security officials said Saturday.

"Intelligence reports indicate the cell recruits female suicide bombers, including women with mental illness. The cell is also believed responsible for making and distributing suicide belts."

Guy didn't even show up for his own immigration hearing to avoid answering questions under oath about his ties to Islamic terror groups. From NBC-Dallas/Fort Worth:

An immigration judge in Dallas on Friday ordered an outspoken Islamic leader deported after the U.S. government alleged he had ties to terrorist groups in the Middle East.

Nabil Sadoun, a Dallas resident and former board member of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, was deported to his native Jordan after he failed to appear at his immigration hearing. He entered the U.S. in August 1993.

Sadoun's attorney, Kimberly Kinser, said he was already in Jordan and was unable to return to Texas because the government had taken his permanent resident card, or green card.

She denied he was tied to any terrorist groups.

In the hearing, Judge Anthony Rogers of the Executive Office for Immigration Review, said Sadoun "made a decision to leave the U.S." and forfeited his right to fight his deportation. He said the decision was final and could not be appealed.

In court, the judge made vague references to the government's voluminous motion to deport him, including alleged involvement with Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. The judge concluded Sadoun lied on government forms when he denied he was a member.

The judge also indicated there was evidence Sadoun contributed to the Richardson-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, which was the largest Islamic charity in the United States. Prosecutors convicted the group of funneling money to terrorist groups and several of its leaders were sent to prison. In the case, CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator.

Two Americans and two Paraguayans in Florida have been busy aiding and abetting the organization that orchestrated the killing of 241 Americans, mostly Marines. The three were apparently part of a scheme to ship what would normally be considered benign goods -- such as Sony Playstation 2s -- to shops owned by Hezbollah in the tri-border region of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil.

Hezbollah has a long history of operating in South America -- especially in the tri-borders region where many terrorist organizations are said to have a foothold.

Agents from the bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and officers from the FBI and other federal agencies executed search warrants in Florida on Thursday and arrested Emilio Gonzalez-Neira, Khaled Safadi and Ulises Talavera, owners of three Miami-area freight forwarding companies....

“This international ICE led multi-jurisdictional investigation demonstrates ICE’s mission to identify, investigate, disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations that support designated terrorist entities and participate in the illicit trade of commodities that support terrorist activities and ultimately threaten the national security of the United States,” John Morton, ICE’s assistant secretary of Homeland Security, said in a statement.

The electronics shop in Paraguay is located within a mall known as Galeria Page, which the U.S. government has designated a terrorist entity for its ties to Hezbollah, according to sources.

"Hundreds of millions" of dollars were made from the scheme, and the money "goes directly to Hezbollah," one source said.

The Indictment also seeks the forfeiture of an amount equal to the value of the electronics that were illegally exported. If convicted, the individual defendants face up to 20 years’ imprisonment on the IEEPA charges, 10 years’ imprisonment on the smuggling charges, and 5 years’ imprisonment on the conspiracy charge. The companies each face up to five years’ probation on all charges, and fines of up to $1,000,000 on the IEEPA charges, and $250,000 on the smuggling and conspiracy charges, respectively.

On Feb. 18, 2010, ICE special agents along with agents and officers of CBP, FBI, DOC, OFAC and the Secret Service, executed arrest and search warrants as a result of this criminal investigation. Cedar owner Khaled Safadi and Transamerica owner Ulises Talavera were arrested in Doral, FL, Jumbo owner Emilio Gonzalez-Neira was arrested in Sunny Isles, FL, and Jomana Import Export owner Samer Mehdi is still at large. Safadi, Talavera and Gonzalez-Neira had their initial appearances today. Gonzalez-Neira was held in pre-trial detention, and Safadi and Talavera are being held in pre-trial detention pending their bond hearings, which are scheduled for Monday, March 1, 2010, at 10:00 a.m.

This investigation was initiated in 2007 by ICE, FBI, CBP and DOC, as part of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). According to the allegations in the Indictment, from at least as early as March 2007 through and continuing to at least January 2008, freight-forwarders Talavera, through Transamerica, and Gonzalez-Neira, through Jumbo, exported Sony brand electronics, including Playstation 2 consoles and digital cameras, to defendant Samer Mehdi, owner of Jomana Import Export, an electronics business located within the Galeria Page, a shopping center in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay. Safadi, through Cedar, was a distributor of the electronics to the freight-forwarders.

Since December 6, 2006, the shopping center known as Galeria Page in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, has been designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity by OFAC, pursuant to Executive Order 13224. Consequently, any transaction or dealing by a U.S. person with Galeria Page, including any transaction or dealing with an entity within Galeria Page, is prohibited. The OFAC designation banned trade with Galeria Page and all tenants located therein. At all relevant times to the Indictment, it is alleged that the defendants were aware that shipping to Galeria Page was prohibited.

To conceal the true destination of the prohibited shipments, the defendants created fake invoices that contained false addresses and also listed fictitious ultimate consignees on the required Shippers Export Declarations (SEDs), and other necessary export paperwork. Locations referenced in these false documents, as well as corresponding emails, ensured that the electronics would reach the prohibited intended destination. Additionally, wire transfer payments from Mehdi in Paraguay to the U.S.-based distributors were routed through various facilities to mask their true origin.

On September 23, 2001, pursuant to his authority under IEEPA, then President George W. Bush issued Executive Order 13224, and declared a national emergency to deal with the threat of acts of terrorism and threats of terrorism committed by foreign terrorists. The Executive Order empowered the U.S. Secretary of State to designate individuals or entities as having committed or as posing a significant risk of committing acts of terrorism that threaten the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States. The Order also authorized the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury to designate certain individuals or entities as owned or controlled by, acting for or on behalf of, or providing support to, foreign terrorists. Executive Order 13224 blocked the property interests of such designated entities and persons, known as SDGTs. This Executive Order was in effect at all times relevant to this Indictment.

To implement Executive Order 13224, the U.S. Department of Treasury, through the OFAC, issued regulations that, among other things, prohibited any transactions or dealings in blocked property, or any transactions with an SDGT by a U.S. person in the absence of a specific license granted by OFAC. No such licenses were granted to the defendants here.

U.S. Attorney Jeffrey H. Sloman stated, “The U.S. Attorney’s Office, along with our law enforcement partners, will continue to vigorously enforce OFAC regulations and federal laws designed to shut down financing to individuals or entities that pose a potential threat to our national security.”

Harold Woodward Director of Field Operations for Customs and Border Protection stated “The changing face of terrorists and other criminal groups pose an increased area of concern for CBP and by fostering relationships with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies and foreign governments we improve the total security of global trade and travel. Dismantling these criminal organizations plays a major role in insuring the safety of our homeland.”

“OFAC will continue to pursue aggressive enforcement actions against domestic and foreign entities that conduct business with terrorist-linked entities through the United States," said OFAC Director Adam J. Szubin.

Mr. Sloman commended the investigative efforts of ICE’s Office of Investigations in Miami, FBI, CBP, DOC, OFAC, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. State Department, Office of the ICE Attaché Buenos Aires and Office of the ICE Attaché Brasilia, and the cooperation of the Paraguayan and Brazilian governments. ICE’s Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Center and Trade Transparency Unit assisted in the investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Allyson Fritz and Russell Koonin, and Department of Justice Trial Attorney Mariclaire Rourke.

An Indictment is only an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

President Obama's new Muslim envoy Rashad Hussain admitted Friday to once defending a man [Sami al-Arian] who later pleaded guilty to conspiring to aid a terrorist group -- an admission that contradicts earlier claims from the White House that the quotes had been mistakenly attributed to Hussain.

Hussain, named by Obama as an envoy to the Organization of Islamic Conference, said Friday his comments at the time were "ill conceived or not well formulated."[BS..ed]

The Web version of the 2004 article in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs was later edited to delete all of Hussain's comments. Editor Delinda Hanley told Fox News last week she believed the change was made in February 2009.

Somebody Covering Up for Obama's OIC Envoy?

A special women's unit within the banned radical group Muslim Brotherhood is operating in Egypt and possibly other Arab nations, according to a counterterrorism report obtained by the Terrorism Committee of the National Association of Chiefs of Police.

The report states that the deputy chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mahmoud Ezzat, was arrested with other members of the al-Qaeda-affiliated group and that investigators uncovered evidence of a group of women who serve as "mules" to deliver messages and act as messengers for the terrorist group.

Twenty-four hours after this story first broke and we're starting to get a better picture of exactly what happened two months ago at the Army base in Fort Jackson, SC. Erick Stakelbeck has an update on the story:

This morning, I spoke to Army CID spokesman Christopher Gray and learned more details about a possible poisoning plot that I first reported here yesterday after CBN confirmed with Patrick Jones of Fort Jackson's Public Affairs Office and a reliable source with intimate knowledge of the investigation. Here is the latest on what we do know.

According to Gray, the Army is investigating allegations that a group of soldiers from the 09 Lima program (more on that later in this post) at Fort Jackson--which is based in South Carolina--had talked about poisoning food in the base's mess hall. The men were questioned about two months ago, around Christmas. Gray said that to protect the integrity of the investigation, he could not comment further. He stressed that the investigation is "open and continuing."

CBN News also spoke to a Department of Homeland Security official with knowledge of the investigation who wished to remain anonymous. The official confirmed that the investigation was ongoing and said that someone in the Lima 09 program overheard five Muslim colleagues talking about poisoning food at the base. The person then reported the men, who were brought in for questioning.

The DHS official stressed that after the terrorist massacre at Fort Hood, the Army is taking a zero tolerance policy towards any potential threatening statements and is now extremely sensitive about any allegations in that regard.

The "nothing to see here, move along" crowd have tried to pick this story apart to claim its not credible. The first item they point to is that both the CBN and Fox News reports last night said that the five guys had been arrested, not just questioned. But in both cases, that's what the Army told them. It took a while for the Army to get its story straight.

The second complaint they make is that the Pentagon is saying that there is "no credible information to support the allegations", which people have taken to mean that there is nothing to the story. But in fact, if you read the Associated Press report this morning, what there was "no credible information" was that they had not actually attempted to poison the food. There had only been some kind of discussions or communications about it, which someone had overheard and reported and which the Army spokesperson said they are taking seriously.

What isn't in dispute, and which all the reports appear to confirm, is that two months after the fact the investigation is still open and ongoing. [UPDATE: CBS is reporting that three of the five have been cleared, but two are still under investigation, making our point again. Report at Breitbart.] Seems to be more here than your standard assclown standing in line at the airport joking about bombing the plane. And except for the initial reports that the guys had been arrested, which is the official statement that both CBN and Fox initially received from the military, the story is holding up. No doubt we'll learn more in the days ahead.

The upside of this story is that the Army acted swiftly when the allegations were reported and appears to be taking a zero tolerance policy on this kind of stuff. That is a very welcome change after the Ft Hood massacre. But as we noted last night, the open question is why this information has taken two months to get out. If these guys had been neo-Nazis or evangelical Christians, the media would have been all over from the very start. When the investigation first opened, the Pentagon was still working on the Ft Hood report and would have seriously undercut their "see no Islam" approach. And after the murder of two US soldiers in Afghanistan last month by an interpreter, the information about the Ft Jackson incident would have raised even greater concerns about the integrity of the DOD's interpreter program at a time that the Pentagon and White House would not have wanted more scrutiny.

So until all the facts are known, a caution about making more out of this than what is known is certainly reasonable. But to dismiss the whole thing out-of-hand and claim that there is nothing to see here flies in the face of the fact that two months after this incident, there is still an open investigation. Bravo to CBN and Fox for making this investigation public and let's see what investigators actually turn up in this case.

MARJAH, Afghanistan — After a fierce gunfight, U.S. Marines seized a strongly defended compound Friday that appears to have been a Taliban headquarters — complete with photos of fighters posing with their weapons, dozens of Taliban-issued ID cards and graduation diplomas from a training camp in Pakistan.

Insurgents who had been using the field office just south of Marjah's town center abandoned it by the end of the day's fighting, as Marines converged on them from all sides, escalating operations to break resistance in this Taliban stronghold in southern Helmand province.

Marines from Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines fought their way south from the town center Friday after residents told them that several dozen insurgent fighters had regrouped in the area.

Throughout the day, small groups of Taliban marksmen tried to slow the advance with rifle fire as they slowly fell back in face of the Marine assault.

"They know that they are outnumbered ... and that in the end they don't have the firepower to compete with us conventionally," said Capt. Joshua Winfrey of Tulsa, Okla., commander of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines.

Amanda Kelly told a deputy that her dad, William Russell Kelly Jr., had shot her boyfriend Randall Carter at their home. The reason for dad's ire, according to the younger Kelly: "He hates him, dude."

The Department of Defense announced today(yesterday) the deaths of three soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device Feb. 13 in Zhari province, Afghanistan. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Killed were:
Staff Sgt. John A. Reiners, 24, of Lakeland, Fla.;
Sgt. Jeremiah T. Wittman, 26, of Darby, Mont.; and
Spc. Bobby J. Pagan, 23, of Austin, Texas.

A retired Lebanese police officer was sentenced to death Thursday for working with Israeli intelligence on a 2006 car bombing that killed two members of a Palestinian terror group.

Mahmoud Rafeh, who is in his 60s, showed no reaction as a judge read the sentence. Death sentences are not uncommon in Lebanon, but they are rarely carried out. Rafeh has two months to appeal.

Marines and Sailors with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, treat an Afghan child afflicted with dermatitus, due to lack of hygiene Feb. 17 in Marjah, Afghanistan. Several days after coalition forces launched an assault against insurgents taking refuge in the city, the fighting continues to manifest in sporadic outbursts.

Some really brilliant Muslims are claiming this bull says "Allah" and that it's a sign of the apocalypse. To me it sounds more like they were trying to milk the bull, and that he didn't mind.

On Feb. 9th, in a field near a road, an Afghan soldier squatted to relieve himself. He picked the wrong spot. A bomb exploded, blowing off a leg, and he died. Captain John Weatherly, Commander of Charlie Company of the 4-23 Infantry at FOB Price in Helmand Province, mentioned that in passing as he described the series of events that led to the death of Specialist – now Sergeant – Adam Ray, a vigorous 23 year old, born in Tampa, Florida. The bomb the Afghan stumbled upon was near the IED that struck Adam.[...]

In the war zone that is Afghanistan, life and limb depend on noticing normally mundane things like culverts. They are a favorite hiding spot for the Taliban to plant bombs intended to kill Americans driving the roads. Hundreds, even thousands of pounds of explosives can be stuffed inside, launching our vehicles into the sky, flipping them over and over, sometimes killing all. And so, in some areas, soldiers on missions must stop dozens of times to check culverts for explosives. Since we do this every day in front of thousands of Afghans, they know our patterns. In addition to planting bombs in culverts, they plant mines and other bombs near culverts, to get men who stop to check.

ISLAMABAD – The brother of senior Afghan Taliban commander Siraj Haqqani has been killed in a U.S. missile strike in northwestern Pakistan, Pakistani intelligence officials said Friday.

The death was the latest in a string of blows to militants operating in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, including the capture in recent weeks of the Taliban's No. 2 leader, that together are seen as the most significant strike against the insurgents in years.

Mohammed Haqqani and three other close associates of Siraj Haqqani were killed when missiles struck a house on Thursday night in the Dande Darpa Khel area of North Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan, two Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly to the media.

What's clear is that the Taliban and al-Qaeda are under heavy pressure on both sides of the border. Even leading to a suicide bombing this week by one group against the other.

They are having a very bad go of it here lately.

(Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) Following up on a previous entry, three Muslim women were recently caned at the Kajang Women's Prison after being sentenced in syariah court for engaging in illicit sex.

Reportedly, it's the first time that women have been caned in Malaysia and it's understandable that women's rights activists have expressed outrage.

In response, the Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association (PPMM) President Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar said that the women protesters are ignorant. He explained that syariah caning is not really a bad thing.

"It must be stressed again that the syariah caning is different from the civil caning. The syariah caning does not cause injury to the offender compared with the civil caning which leaves a scar," he said.

In any event, the debate regarding the caning of women remains heated in Malaysia. (More ....)

CBN News has learned exclusively that five Muslim soldiers at Fort Jackson in South Carolina were arrested just before Christmas and are in custody. The five men were part of the Arabic Translation program at the base.

The men are suspected of trying to poison the food supply at Fort Jackson.

A source with intimate knowledge of the investigation, which is ongoing, told CBN News investigators suspect the "Fort Jackson Five" may have been in contact with the group of five Washington, DC area Muslims that traveled to Pakistan to wage jihad against U.S. troops in December. That group was arrested by Pakistani authorities, also just before Christmas.

Coming as it does on the heels of November's Fort Hood jihadist massacre, this news has major implications.

Fox News is now reporting on it.

The U.S. Army is investigating allegations that soldiers were attempting to poison the food supply at Fort Jackson in South Carolina.

The ongoing probe began two months ago, Chris Grey, a spokesman for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, told Fox News.

The Army is taking the allegations “extremely seriously,” Grey said, but so far, "there is no credible information to support the allegations."

The suspects were part of a Arabic translation program called "09 Lima" and use Arabic as their first language, two sources told Fox News. Another military source said they were Muslim.

Grey would not confirm or deny the sources’ information.

This is a bunch of bulls**t. If there is no substance to the allegations, why are the guys in custody. And why did the DOD sit on this info until it broke in the media? [See my update at the bottom of this post. Both CBN and Fox were told the five were arrested, and they don't know if they are still in custody, but the AP says they weren't arrested at all.]

UPDATE by Rusty: Wow, just wow. I really hope this turns out to be untrue.

We only have two examples of Muslims soldiers betraying their country and trying to kill their fellow soldiers since 9/11: Nidal Hasan and Hasan Akbar.

In both of those cases the would-be terrorist worked alone. Anwar al-Awlaki encouraged Hasan, but he didn't plot with him.

But if this pans out -- and, again, I hope it doesn't -- that would mean that we had an active cell, a plot by would-be-jihadists, within the ranks of the U.S. Army. The number five may be small in the big scheme of things, but to have five Muslim soldiers plotting together? That is a scary, scary thought.

The five Muslims who went to Pakistan that they might have been in contact with would be these guys. All of whom protest that they were a) innocent b) tortured by the Pakistanis.

That the Pakistanis tortured them? Believable. Innocent? Not so much.

Clearly we need Muslims in the military as they are the group most likely to have the language skills that we need to win the war on Islamist aggression. And as I've remind readers over and over, there are a lot of Muslims who despise Islamism just as much as the next guy.

But given that it's also undoubtedly clear that Muslims are also far more likely to sympathize with terrorism and violent jihad, how do you balance that against the need for more Muslims to serve in our intelligence ranks?

The answer would be heightened security scrutiny -- the unspeakable and much hated profiling. Which might turn Muslims off from joining the ranks. A catch 22. Unsolvable?

Also, I'd really like this question resolved.

UPDATE: Fort Jackson is home to the Army's English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The program is for Arabic, Dari and Pashto speaking individuals who wish to become translators for the US Army.

We also learn they were part of the "09 Lima program". The "09 Lima program" recruits Muslims willing to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan, offering them an expedited path to citizenship.

So, these guys may have been foreigners.

UPDATE (Barbarossa): The Army seems to be putting out two different stories. Both CBN and Fox, the first to the story, were told the five guys were arrested/detained. The AP states that they were not arrested. Both can't be true, and its unlikely that both CBN and Fox lied about what the Army said. Both CBN and Fox say they don't know if they're still being held. Have they been returned to their units while the investigation continues? What is their status?

I'm sure we'll find out the coming days exactly what happened. To both CBN and Fox's credit, they only reported on what they could confirm with the Army before breaking the story. There are more questions than answers at this point, and some caution on speculating about what happened seems warranted. But all reports indicate that SOME kind of investigation is STILL open in this case, which smacks against they Army's " no credible information" comment to Fox and the "nothing here to see" blow-off to the AP.

One question stands out though: Why did the DOD sit on this story for two months? If these guys were neo-Nazis, do you think we would only be hearing about it now?

A small single-engine plane crashed into a building in Northwest Austin Thursday morning, sparking a fire.

The crash happened near MoPac and Highway 183.

Smoke could be scene pouring from the Echelon building on traffic cameras and in photographs send in by KVUE viewers and reporters.

KVUE’s Noelle Newton reports most of the windows are blown out. People were evacuated. There is so far no word on how many people have been injured.

Update 3: Another eyewitness was interviewed and he commented when training to fly that plane one slows down if in trouble. He said the plane hit the building full throttle.

The latest arrests took place late Wednesday and early Thursday when nine militants linked to al-Qaida were nabbed near Pakistan's biggest city of Karachi, where the Taliban's deputy chief Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar was picked up several days ago....

Communications intercepted by U.S. authorities played a key role in tracking and arresting the suspects, who were in Karachi buying bomb-making equipment, the officials said. They were taken to Islamabad for questioning....

Among those arrested in the three Karachi area raids were:

-Ameer Muawiya, an associate of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden who was in charge of foreign al-Qaida militants operating in Pakistan's tribal regions near Afghanistan.

-Akhunzada Popalzai, also known as Mohammad Younis, a one-time Taliban shadow governor in Zabul province and former police chief in Kabul when the repressive regime ruled Afghanistan, according to Mullah Mamamood, a tribal leader in Ghazni province.

-Hamza, who served as a former Afghan army commander in Helmand province, during the Taliban rule.

-Abu Riyan al Zarqawi, also known as Abu Musa, and his local facilitator, Mufti Kifayatullah. According to another Pakistani intelligence official, Zarqawi was involved in dealing with Chechen and Tajik militants operating in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt on the border with Afghanistan.

The two Taliban shadow governors — Mullah Abdul Salam of Kunduz province and Mullah Mohammad in Baghlan province — were arrested about 10 to 12 days ago in Pakistan, according to Afghan and Pakistani officials.

Pakistan identified two of the al Qaeda leaders as Abu Reyan Al Zarkazi, who is also known as Abu Musa, and Kifayatullah, Dawn reported. Abu Musa was described as “a known associate of Osama Bin Laden and was notorious for firing down US drones in Waziristan.” He also led foreign al Qaeda fighters in the tribal areas and “was notorious for firing down US drones in Waziristan.”

Pakistani police in Karachi also arrested Abu Waqas, a Taliban leader form the Bajaur tribal agency. Abu Waqas was in Karachi to “train 270 teenage girls aged between 13 and 16 for suicide attacks,” Daily Times reported. Waqas told police he had masterminded attacks against security forces and girls’ schools in Bajaur. The military has claimed it has secured much of Bajaur from the Taliban.

HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – When a 4-year-old Afghan girl named Azerha was struck by shrapnel Feb. 10, her brother Quassiam did the only thing he could think of – approach a group of armed Marines miles away and ask for medical assistance.[...]

Azerha had been struck in the chest by a fragment of metal from an improvised explosive device using 82 mm mortar rounds which detonated near her home. The wound had caused bleeding and breathing problems for Azerha by the time she arrived, Navy corpsman reported as they examined and began to stabilize her for a medical evacuation to a medical trauma facility.

While waiting inside the walls of a farming compound for a helicopter to arrive, corpsmen treating Azerha found that her lung was beginning to collapse. Between the time her flight was scheduled to arrive and her worsening symptoms, Casasflores, the senior corpsman on scene, decided they had to act quickly to stabilize their patient.

"Her vitals began to drop while we were waiting for the medevac and we had to do a needle decompression," said Casasflores, who was born in Lima, Peru, but calls Newark, N.J., home. "She wasn't bleeding very badly, but with almost any trauma to the chest, you have to do a needle decompression [to allow the lung to expand again]."

"She took it extremely well for a small child," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Adam E. Neep, a field hospital corpsman with Weapons Company, 1/3. "For taking a big needle through her chest, she barely fussed."

Hello Dad, I'm in jail!

Thanks to every one who tried to get me a copy of the second episode of the BBC's Generation Jihad -- we can't watch it on our side of the pond -- but it was our old standby AtheistMedia who uploaded it to YouTube.

I won't get to watching it until tomorrow afternoon, but I've been told that this episode focuses much more on British cyber jihadis, especially one Younes "Irhabi 007" Tsouli and how from the basement of his mom's apartment he became the central node connecting al Qaeda in Iraq with sympathetic Muslims in the West. Muslims who took up the cause and became terrorists or tried to become terrorists.

I got in on the Irhabi 007 hunt a little late in the game so he and I only crossed paths accidentally. However, at least four good friends had more direct dealings with Younes. One tracked him down, one turned down Younes' marriage proposal, and the other testified against him at his trial. The fourth? He was a victim of Younes' favorite hobby of using other people's servers to host the propaganda videos that he posted all over the forums.

I also hear there are a lot of parents in denial. My son a terrorist? Not Achmed!

So, yeah, I'm going to pop the popcorn before I sit down to watch this episode. Please tell me they have footage of Tsouli in Belmarish prison next to his cuddly cellmate "Bubba"?

A top Italian food writer has been suspended indefinitely from the country’s version of the television programme Ready Steady Cook for recommending stewed cat to viewers as a “succulent dish”.

RAI, the public broadcasting network, said that it had dropped Beppe Bigazzi, 77, for offering the recipe on La Prova del Cuoco, which is broadcast at midday on the main channel. Its switchboard was inundated with complaints from viewers and animal rights groups. Bigazzi said that casserole of cat was a famous dish in his home region of Valdarno, Tuscany.

“I’ve eaten it myself and it’s a lot better than many other animals,” he told viewers. “Better than chicken, rabbit or pigeon.” He said that for optimum flavour the meat should be “soaked in spring water for three days” before being stewed.

Said Namouh, who spread jihadist propaganda on the Internet and had visions of martyrdom, received a life sentence Wednesday. The Moroccan-born man will not be eligible for parole for at least 10 years.

It was only the second time in Canadian legal history - and, ironically, the second time in less than a month - that a person was sentenced to life for terrorism charges in a Canadian court.

Caning men and women for having sex out of wedlock. It's all the rage in "moderate" Muslim countries.

Malaysian authorities said Wednesday that officials caned four Muslim men and, for the first time, three Muslim women earlier this month on a conviction of having sex out of wedlock.

The move to cane the women under the country's Islamic Shariah laws has raised fresh concerns about the growing political and judicial influence of Islam in what traditionally has been one of the world's more moderate Muslim nations.

What's next for these Westernized moderate Muslim Malaysians, caning women for drinking a beer in a hotel? Oh, they did that already.

Pajamas Media says Obama's Sec. of Homeland Security met with three Islamist groups. I'm really only familiar with two of them, and they're much much worse than CAIR. The ISNA and the MAS are two organizations that espouse Islamist ideology -- including the adoption of sharia law.

You probably know about CAIR, but CAIR's recent crimes revolve mostly (mostly) around their complete denial that Muslims are far more likely to become terrorists than any one else. They are the right hand of the magician that distracts you from what the left hand is doing.

The ISNA and the MAS? They are the left hand.

Even better news? DHS is adopting a program in which they cooperate with the very groups espousing the ideology that terrorists adopt and only take to their logical extremes. And by cooperate I mean share information with.

Among the mix were three organizations directly associated with an outlawed terrorist entity — the Muslim Brotherhood.....

The program requires bringing in Muslim groups as “partners” in a two-way information sharing program....

One of the groups meeting with Secretary Napolitano was the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), which was created by members of the Muslim Brotherhood. ISNA was named in 2007 by the U.S. Department of Justice as an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal terror trial. The group was identified as a major financier of overseas Islamic terrorist organizations, particularly Hamas....

The Muslim American Society, another participant in the DHS meeting, was founded in 1993 by Jamal Badawi, an Egyptian-born Muslim Brotherhood leader. The organization was founded in Chicago as an American chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood with the goal of introducing sharia law into Muslim-American communities in the United States.

Theoretically this makes sense as it is more efficient. Instead of forcing your will on other actors you make your will their will.

The only problem is that cooptation works both ways. The goal is for you to be the dog wagging them, the tail; but sometimes the tail wags the dog, doesn't it?

For instance, the ongoing case of the al Qaeda connected would be terrorist Najibullah Zazi comes to mind. The FBI had reached out to Zazi's former imam who had cooperated with them in the past in hopes of getting a line on what Zazi was up to. Zazi's imam then turned around and warned Zazi's family that the FBI was looking for him.

And this was all, of, what? A few months ago. The imam was only indicted in October of last year.

We've speculated about this behind the scenes and hinted at it here, but I pointed this out to AllahP yesterday and he makes note of it today. It's worth another post because this LA Times piece seems to confirm -- or, at least, give some credence to -- our earlier speculation that the capture of an al Qaeda courier might have inadvertently given Mullah Baradar's location away.

Here's the key background information about the capture of Abdullah Saleh al-Eidan in Oman, alleged to be an al Qaeda "field commander" on his way from the Afghanistan/Pakistan arena to Yemen:

Even more noteworthy, the [online] postings -written by a fellow Al Qaeda "brother" - reported that Al Eidan had with him 300 "important phone numbers" as well as pictures, names and documents from Afghanistan.

"The brother requested that this information reach the commanders in Yemen and Afghanistan as soon as possible," read one of the postings, which appeared on a web forum known as Fallujah Islamic Forum. "He also asked the commanders to change their places of residence and mobile phone numbers as soon as possible."

But in light of this brought to us via AllahP? Well, it seems that it might have been connected to even bigger news:

U.S. and Pakistani officials said Tuesday that the capture of Baradar was driven by a rare intelligence break that enabled American spy agencies to pinpoint the Taliban military chief and help Pakistan's intelligence service organize on short notice a daring operation to arrest him.....

Officials provided few specifics Tuesday on the nature of the intelligence that led to the capture. U.S. spy agencies have been tracking Baradar's communications and activity closely since December, officials said, but even so, the intelligence that enabled the raid in Karachi involved an unexpected break. "Fortune played a role," one U.S. official said.

Coincidence? Maybe. But I question the timing.

Also, to address AllahP's concern about why the capture of an al Qaeda courier would compromise the location of the Taliban's top operational commander? It's simple: the distinction between the Taliban and al Qaeda is superficial, at best.

I know it is in vogue now in the White House and has been in certain circles foe much longer than that to try to distinguish between the two groups, but at a practical level there really is no distinction. Sure, there are different command structures and what not, but bin Laden has always coordinated with Mullah Omar and vice versa. The level of distinction between the two groups may be real, but is at the level where only organizational theorists would be interested.

To think otherwise is to believe that which is convenient for convenience sake -- that while al Qaeda can't be talked to we can end the war with the Taliban at the negotiations table.

If my little hypothesis is true, one can only hope that we had enough resources on the ground and the Pakistanis willing to cooperate at a minimal level (something they seem capable of every third Tuesday, or so) that we actually find, capture, or kill some other big whigs. Mullah Omar or Ayman al Zawahiri would be nice. Alas, it is too much to hope that Osama bin Laden's location was in the courier's files. I presume no one knows where he can be found. Not even his second in command.

UPDATE: Even as I was writing this Howie brings us news of a second top Taliban commander caught at about the same time as Mullah Baradar. More evidence?

Another leader of the Afghan Taliban has been captured by authorities in Pakistan working in partnership with U.S. intelligence officials. Taliban sources in the region and a counterterrorism officials in Washington have identified the detained insurgent leader as Mullah Abdul Salam, described as the Taliban movement's "shadow governor" of Afghanistan's Kunduz province.

Taliban sources told NEWSWEEK's Sami Yousafzai that Salam was grabbed by Pakistani security forces in the city of Faisalabad about a week ago—close to the same time that Pakistani forces, again with American support, captured the Afghan Taliban's No. 2 leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, in Karachi. The Taliban sources said that Mullah Salam was arrested with three other militants.

A panel discussion on the threat posed by "Islamic supremacism," Shariah and political correctness has been scheduled for this week's Conservative Political Action Conference, stirring complaints from some American Muslims that the exercise amounts to Muslim-bashing.

The two-hour session, titled "Jihad: The Political Third Rail," is set for Friday morning, right in the middle of the three-day annual summit of conservative icons and activists in Washington, D.C.

Scheduled to speak are Steve Coughlin, a former Pentagon specialist on Islamic law who was fired two years ago, allegedly under pressure from pro-Muslim officials, and Wafa Sultan, an author and prominent critic of Islam. The discussion is billed as a window into Islam's "war on free speech," the "encroachment" of Shariah -- or Islamic law -- in the West and efforts by the Muslim Brotherhood to infiltrate American society.

"What a spectacle"
The Obama administration revealed a major plank of its Iran plan this week at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. While Iranian dissidents are dying on the streets, locked up in torture chambers or corralled into show trials, the president is desperate to seem to be doing something.

What better venue for keeping up appearances than the UN? Hence, during a concoction called the “universal periodic review” (UPR), Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Posner gave a speech on Monday critical of various Iranian abominations – for a grand total of two minutes.

The UPR process is touted as the centerpiece of the operations of the Human Rights Council, the UN’s lead human rights body created over Bush administration objections in 2006. Posner did not use the occasion on the world stage to mention by name the American citizens now being held hostage in Iran or to demand their immediate release.

The whole UPR spectacle is structured so as to focus on one country for three hours once every four years. The country under consideration is allotted one of those precious three hours. In Iran’s case, the delegation, headed by Mohammad Javad Larijani, secretary general of the High Council of Human Rights, used the UN-provided opportunity to spend over an hour regaling the world about its glorious human rights record. The delegation included two women wearing heavy chadors who were permitted to exalt women’s rights in Iran, and a Christian brought in to applaud the situation of non-Muslims.

In addition, 54 states raced through their two-minute remarks, having time to do little else than line up pro and anti the regime’s behavior.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney stormed the beachheads of the liberal US media again today with a fiery performance on ABC’s This Week. He offered a stinging rebuke to current VP Joe Biden’s ludicrous claim that Iraq may end up as one of Barack Obama’s “great achievements”, as well as blistering criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of terrorist suspects. He also launched a strike on Biden’s recent comment that another 9/11 scale attack was “unlikely.”

“I just think that’s just dead wrong. I think the biggest threat the United States faces today is the possibility of another 9/11 with a nuclear weapon or a biological agent of some kind. And I think al Qaeda is out there — even as we meet — trying to do that. You have to consider it as a war. You have to consider it as something we may have to deal with tomorrow. You don’t want the vice president of the United States running around saying, ‘Oh, it’s not likely going to happen.’”

The Daily Telegraph was right to name Cheney America’s most influential conservative in its recent ranking of the top 100. He was the first opposition figure of weight to seriously dent Barack Obama on national security issues when he unleashed a ferocious attack on the president’s policies last May in a major speech at The American Enterprise Institute.

MARJAH, Afghanistan — Taliban insurgents are increasingly using civilians as human shields as they fight allied troops trying to take the militants' southern stronghold of Marjah, an Afghan official said Wednesday as military squads resumed painstaking house-to-house searches.[...]

With the assault in its fifth day, insurgents are firing at Afghan troops from inside or next to compounds where women and children appear to have been ordered to stand on a roof or in a window, said Gen. Mohiudin Ghori, the brigade commander for Afghan troops in Marjah.

"Especially in the south of Marjah, the enemy is fighting from compounds where soldiers can very clearly see women or children on the roof or in a second-floor or third-floor window," Ghori said. "They are trying to get us to fire on them and kill the civilians."

So, when we don't give them a jury trial they get pissed. And when we do give them a jury trial and they're found guilty they get pissed.

What's the lesson here? Shoot to kill.

Robin Simcox voices something that's been bothering me for some time about those in the government who proclaim just what Islam is and isn't. In this case the post is addressed toward Obama's chief terrorism adviser John Brennan who is apparently an expert on just what jihad means and who declares that terrorists are not jihadists since jihad means inner struggle and what not.

Here's Simcox's objection:

The problem is that I have no idea why the deputy NSA feels he has to try and be a theologian, and what makes him qualified to rule on the naunces of jihad. It is not the role of government counterterrorism officials to instruct anyone what Islam – or any religion – is and what it isn’t.

The truth of the matter is that there is no such thing as "authentic Islam". Just as there is no such thing as "authentic Christianity" or "authentic" any non-hierarchical religion.

John Brennan is no more qualified to tell us about authentic Islam than is Osama bin Laden.

During the question-and-answer session, Brennan welcomed a question from Omar Shahin. He identified himself as the head of the “North American Imams Federation.” What he didn’t mention was his role as the chief ringleader of the infamous flying imams....

In coordination with the unindicted terror co-conspirators of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Shahin and his radical delegation attempted to shake down the airline with a discrimination lawsuit and bully the citizen “John Does” who flagged the imams’ security-undermining behavior.

But it's even worse because Brennan's answer seemed to be that we should be more concerned about backlash against Muslims then about very real terrorist attacks, such as Fort Hood.

Backlash?

There has been zero backlash against Muslims since Fort Hood. None. Zero.

As well there shouldn't be. But even if there was some "backlash" (notice the quotation marks) if you define "backlash" as people saying mean things, then how the hell can you compare people dying at Fort Hood with Muslims having their feelings hurt?

Yesterday, Justice Anthony Whealy sentenced five Muslim terrorists , who conspired to blow up a few objects here and there just to show us the right path to Allah.

Unfortunately for the five wanna-be jihadiis, Khaled Cheikho, Moustafa Cheikho, Mohamed Ali Elomar, Abdul Rakib Hasan, and Mohammed Omar Jamal – the jail terms are rather hefty.

The 44-year-old ringleader of the group received the most severe sentence of 28 years with at least 21 years to be served behind bars.[..]

The jailing of the men was challenged by members of the Muslim community, with cleric Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali saying the case had the "scent of hysteria", and the five had "no connection to acts of terror whatsoever"

THEIR smiles said it all. Moments after judge Anthony Whealy ordered the five Sydney terrorists to serve jail sentences ranging from 23 to 28 years, the men looked calmly around the courtroom and smirked.

If nothing else, their reaction seemed to confirm the judge's assessment that not one of the five had any remorse for plotting violent jihad on Australian soil.

In fact, the judge said, the men seemed to "wear their imprisonment like some kind of badge of honour", seeing it as "a test of their faith and a burden willingly borne as a duty arising from their fundamentalist religious conviction".

A Saudi prince was last night being quizzed by police on suspicion of murder after one of his servants was found battered to death at a top London hotel.

Officers were called to the five-star Landmark Hotel in Marylebone, Central London, after a 32-year-old Saudi Arabian man was found dead in one of its suites.

The victim, believed to be part of the royal's entourage, suffered severe head injuries in the attack. [More here]

The Taliban released a video Sunday of two French journalists kidnapped in Afghanistan in December pleading for their government to negotiate with their captors.

The video was posted on a Web site and the link was provided by Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid. On it, the two journalists plead for their release and urge French President Nicolas Sarkozy to negotiate quickly with their captors.

The pair disappeared Dec. 30 along with two or three Afghan employees while traveling in Kapisa province northeast of Kabul. French soldiers in the region are fighting the Taliban and other insurgents as part of NATO's mission in Afghanistan.

In the video, one of the reporters said there was a third hostage, though only the two Frenchmen appeared on tape. They spoke sitting on the floor of a dark room, with a flowered sheet hung behind them. Both were unshaven and appeared tired, but the two reporters both said they were in good health and had been well treated. They said the days and weeks felt long and they were eager to go home.

As an active coalition of self-described Tea Party Patriots we were confused and when we learned about this development. We are an active part in the Tea Party movement and we have NO IDEA who these people are. It didn’t take long to quickly learn that the patriots who have built the Tea Party movement aren’t the people behind the Nevada Tea Political Party.

First of all the name “Tea Party” doesn’t belong to any one faction of the conservative movement. It encompasses a whole decentralized movement of angry, dedicated American patriots who have different ideas and values but have united to stop the liberal march towards socialism and blatant political corruption.

This campaign is working together with multiple “tea party groups” to put together a unique candidate event and we are working hard to travel the country with the Tea Party Express. For one faction of the movement to register the Tea Party as an official political party without consulting the patriots who have worked to build the movement, reeks of either arrogance or dirty politics. If this is a legitimate Tea Party group then they are acting without any sense of what it takes to win a real election.

Oddly, Khattab frantically removed all evidence that he and "ooklepookle" were friends (archive here) shortly after the MSM picked up on his praising of Nidal Hasan for murdering his fellow soldiers. A few weeks after we showed that he and "ooklepookle" were friends and that Hasan himself may have been one of his followers, Khattab announced his retirement from "Revolution Muslim" and now claims to be living abroad.

In a gunbattle this week, the 21-year-old from Casper, Wyoming, took a sniper's bullet square in his forehead as he fought from the roof of a compound seized by U.S. Marines taking part in an offensive targeting the Taliban hotbed of Marjah.

Knocked back by the blow, he felt for blood from what he was sure was a head wound.

The keynote speaker ... Michael Keefer, a professor of literary theory at the University of Guelph .... described 9/11 as a "planned demolition" run by Americans, and the Toronto 18 bomb plot, which led to convictions and guilty pleas, as a "police frame-up" over "nothing of significance."

Speaking of Islam's alleged peacefulness, Canada's willingness to play host to those who believe all this terrorism is just so much nonsense, and the massive Zionist plot to make Islam look bad, has any one heard from Canadian "journalist" and Taliban-sympathizer Beverly Giesbrecht lately? Last heard being held hostage by the very same Taliban she went to Pakistan to help?

In the same building, they found a large cache of documents, one of which was a detailed insider account of a recent attack on a top-security U.S. military installation in which a number of American soldiers had been abducted and then murdered.

The report not only named the commander of this audacious raid - who was tracked down and killed by U.S. forces a month later - but also showed that Iranian Revolutionary Guards had approved the operation.

Other memos found at the house listed attacks on British bases and payments made by the Iranians to insurgents ranging from $750,000 (£479,000) to $3million (£1.9million)...

His name was Ali Mussa Daqduq, and for more than 20 years he had been an active member of Hezbollah, the militant islamic group in his homeland. Because of his long experience with roadside bombs, Tehran had hired him, sending him to Iraq as a 'management consultant' in terror. His job was to raise the game of those fighting the British in Basra.

He described how he travelled from Lebanon to Tehran and then made four trips into Iraq to help insurgent groups. He also took groups of Iraqis back into Iran for further training.

The debriefing of the captured Hezbollah officer was the clincher, proof positive of Iran's direct involvement in the brutal fighting in Iraq and the deaths of Coalition soldiers....

An 11-member hit squad, composed mostly of UK passport holders, was responsible for the killing of a leader of the Hamas armed wing in a Dubai hotel room last month, the country's police chief told reporters yesterday.

Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim showed a news conference surveillance video of the alleged assassination team arriving on separate flights to Dubai the day before Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was found dead by staff at the Bustan Rotana hotel...

And al-Jazeera lets us know about two Palistineans who have been arrested for providing logistical support to the 11-member team.

Police said that the killers used an electronic device to enter Mabhouh's room and lay in wait for him.

"He was strangled after receiving maybe an electric shock," Khalfan said on Monday.

Then Haaretz tells us about Ireland's determination that the passports used by 3 of the assassins were conterfeits.

Dubai will soon issue arrest warrants for the 11 suspects, but Tamim said Monday that he had still not ruled out Israeli involvement. While he did not accuse Israel directly, Tamim did say it was possible that "leaders of certain countries gave orders to their intelligence agents."

"We do not rule out Mossad, but when we arrest those suspects we will know who masterminded it. [We have not] issued arrest warrants yet, but will do so soon," he told a press conference on Monday.

Tamim revealed surveillance video of the alleged assassination team arriving on separate flights to Dubai the day before Mabhouh was found dead; the suspects also checked into separate hotels. They paid for all expenses in cash and used different mobile phone cards to avoid being traced, he added.

WASHINGTON — The Taliban’s top military commander was captured several days ago in Karachi, Pakistan, in a secret joint operation by Pakistani and American intelligence forces, according to American government officials.

The commander, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, is an Afghan described by American officials as the most significant Taliban figure to be detained since the American-led war in Afghanistan started more than eight years ago. He ranks second in influence only to Mullah Muhammad Omar, the Taliban’s founder and a close associate of Osama bin Laden before the Sept. 11 attacks.

Mullah Baradar has been in Pakistani custody for several days, with American and Pakistani intelligence officials both taking part in interrogations, according to the officials.

A school superintendent in Rhode Island is trying to fix an abysmally bad school system.

Her plan calls for teachers at a local high school to work 25 minutes longer per day, each lunch with students once in a while, and help with tutoring. The teachers' union has refused to accept these apparently onerous demands.

The teachers at the high school make $70,000-$78,000, as compared to a median income in the town of $22,000. This exemplifies a nationwide trend in which public sector workers make far more than their private-sector counterparts (with better benefits).

The school superintendent has responded to the union's stubbornness by firing every teacher and administrator at the school.

Sen. Scott Brown thinks Vice President Joe Biden was “off base” when he suggested Sunday that the Massachusetts Republican get his facts straight on the legal procedures for military tribunals.

“It was insulting,” said Brown, who frequently jabbed the administration during his Senate campaign for giving suspected terrorists legal representation.

On CBS's “Face the Nation” last weekend, Biden shot back that he doesn’t “know whether the new senator from Massachusetts understands: When you get tried in a military tribunal, you get a lawyer, too.”[...]

Brown said he is particularly incensed by Biden’s remarks because he’s served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for more than 30 years and is currently the Guard's top defense attorney in New England.

“I know the military rules and regulations and procedures from A to Z,” Brown said.

With renewed focus on al Qaeda threats emanating from Yemen, the US is substantially increasing support to several branches of the Yemeni military. However, Yemen’s military and security forces are often involved in for-profit ventures, on both overt and covert levels. The task of building up Yemen’s Coast Guard demonstrates such difficulties.

Last year, the Coast Guard complained several times to the Interior Ministry that the Border Guard was complicit in criminal activity and “aiding smugglers as smuggling takes place in an organized way,” the Yemen Post reported. The Border Guards prevented the Coast Guard from searching boats suspected of smuggling, sometimes resulting violent clashes between the forces’ members.

The diversion of US aid into private pockets is another area of concern. US support to Yemen’s Coast Guard began in 2003, and it seems a worthy investment in light of the wide variety of criminal networks operating in Yemeni waters.

Piracy is a global priority when 20% global shipping passes through the Gulf of Aden. Tens of thousands of Somalis are smuggled across the narrow Bab al Mendab to Yemen annually. Traffickers carry weapons and other contraband to Somalia on the return leg of the trip. Diesel subsidized by the Yemeni government is smuggled out as enormous quantities of illegal narcotics and counterfeit pharmaceuticals are smuggled in. Yemen’s 1900 km coastline makes it easy for al Qaeda terrorists to slip into and out of the country. Counter-terror operations become more pressing with Somalia's al Shabab terrorists coordinating with Yemen's al Qaeda.

The problem for the US arises when the Coast Guard neglects these concerns to hire itself out as a private security contractor to shipping lines.

The Yemeni firm, Lotus Projects, was established "based on the demand of various official bodies for professional intermediaries to act between government bodies and private or public entities overseas." Lotus’s website further highlights the firm’s “close working relationship with Yemeni Governmental Security Organizations” including the Coast Guard.

Lotus’ UK based franchise, the Gulf of Aden Group Transit (GoAGT), reports that it has a “unique agreement with Lotus Projects and the Yemen Navy which means you are guaranteed the protection of highly trained military personnel and the Yemen Government in the event of an attack.”

Indeed, “For $35,000 for a three day transit, GoAGT will supply an armed team of six serving Yemen military or coastguard personnel to embark on and protect a vessel between the GoAGT transit coordinates,” Marinelog.com reported.

The US has been training the Yemen Coast Guard since 2003. The US delivered 24 vessels to Yemen in that time. In 2009, the US Coast Guard awarded a $28.2 million contract to build two 87-foot Protector-class Coastal Patrol Boats for the Yemen Coast Guard. The vessels “will assist the Yemen Coast Guard in addressing an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden that is strategically important to U.S. interests,” the USCG said in announcing the contract.

But those anti-piracy missions will likely profit of a private company. And other important patrols may be abandoned altogether in favor of lucrative contracts with foreign shippers.

GoAGT promises “a dedicated escort by a heavily armoured 37.5 metre Yemen Navy Austal patrol boat." Yemen only has ten Austal vessels, delivered in 2005 at a cost of about US$ 5 million dollars each. The boats, now tasked as merchant escorts, were built to engage in “general police missions in coastal waters, customs control and anti-terrorist operations at sea, offshore protection and tracking, surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone, defence and protection of national sea areas and operations within integrated task forces,” Austal reported.

Stars and Stripes, an independent news source for the US military community, reported on the controversy. Lt. Col. Bakill Hamzah, operations officer for the Aden District of the Yemeni coast guard, and manager of the country’s National Anti-Piracy Center said to the paper that Yemen considers hiring out Yemeni Coast Guardsmen to commercial companies as an “appropriate” and “good” solution to counter piracy.

Not all agree.

“It slightly smacks of vigilantism to me," said Tony Mason, secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping and International Shipping Federation.

On a broader level, one of the leading causes of instability in Yemen boils down to the widespread appropriation of government resources byindividuals for profit or personal goals.

Scanning the headlines of the Indian press it seems that the Indians are convinced that American Daood "David Headley" Gilani had a hand in the attack late last week that killed 9 (that's up from the initial estimate of 8) at a restaurant frequented by foreigners and near a Jewish center.

Unfortunately many of the stories take on a conspiratorial air speculating that Headley was a double-agent for the CIA. This speculation is based on .... well, nothing. Not even uncomfirmed rumors. Just speculation that since Headley probably was a DEA informant that, well, I'm not sure how those two get conflated in the minds of those in the developing world, but they do.

Laying aside the conspiracy theories about Headley, it is more than mere speculation based on nothing to suggest that he had a hand in the attack. We know he helped do recon work for the Mumbai attack. We also know that Headley spent time in Pune doing precisely the same things he did in Mumbai.

Hindustan Times:

Home Secretary G.K. Pillai Monday said there was a link between Saturday's Pune blast that killed nine people and the recce missions conducted by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) suspect David Coleman Headley, and the government was trying to get access to him.

"The Pune blast investigations are at an initial stage. We are pushing for access to David Headley. We cannot rule in or rule out a foreign hand," Pillai told NDTV news channel.

"There is a Headley link. It is too close to the Osho Ashram. We have no idea about who did it. We need some more days. The footwork is on," he said.

The home secretary also indicated the LeT's Karachi project used Indian Muslims for the attack on German Bakery, a popular eatery in Pune, Saturday.

SYDNEY — An Australian court Monday sentenced five Muslim extremists to prison terms of 23 to 28 years after convicting them of preparing for terror attacks on unspecified targets by stockpiling explosive chemicals and firearms.

Justice Anthony Whealy of the New South Wales Supreme Court said he had little hope that the men, aged 25 to 44, could be rehabilitated, saying they were motivated by "intolerant, inflexible religious conviction" and had shown contempt for the Australian government, its leaders and laws.

The men were found guilty last October on charges linked to preparing for a terrorist act between July 2004 and November 2005. The men — Australian-born or naturalized citizens with Muslim immigrant backgrounds — had all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Yeah, I'm pretty much just ripping stories off Jawa related stories from Hot Air today. This is good, though. You'll notice that the source of the story is the al Faloja forum. Somehow they knew that an al Qaeda courier had been arrested in transit from Pakistan to Yemen.

Since the forum post turns out to be true, one must wonder out loud whether the naysayers who claim that the online jihad forums are no big deal, nothing to worry about, First Amendment! etc, etc, .... might not wish to rethink their untenable position?

While it is true that the relationship between forum users and al Qaeda is usually indirect (with al Qaeda reinforcing beliefs and inspiring some to action), sometimes the relationship is quite direct -- some members of these forums are also members of al Qaeda, other violent Islamist groups, or part of homegrown terror cells.

Declassified:

There has been no public announcement of the arrest. But in a possible indication of the operative's importance, just a few days later, two postings on a jihadi web forum suggested that Al Qaeda leaders were worried and wanted their "commanders" to take immediate precautions.

The postings stated that the "captured brother" -- identified as a "field commander" named Abdullah Saleh al-Eidan who went by the name of "Barud"- - was "on his way back from Afghanistan" and had been turned over to Saudi authorities.

Even more noteworthy, the postings -written by a fellow Al Qaeda "brother" - reported that Al Eidan had with him 300 "important phone numbers" as well as pictures, names and documents from Afghanistan.

"The brother requested that this information reach the commanders in Yemen and Afghanistan as soon as possible," read one of the postings, which appeared on a web forum known as Fallujah Islamic Forum. "He also asked.the commanders to change their places of residence and mobile phone numbers as soon as possible."

Strategic question: In light of this, are the forums better left open where we can monitor them and gain crucial intelligence? Or, is asymmetrical warfare different enough from conventional warfare that closing the forums creates even greater advantages? Such as forcing al Qaeda to use couriers rather than email.

I think of all the intel we gathered in WWII through monitoring German and Japanese communications traffic. Invaluable intelligence. But the command structure of al Qaeda is such that communications between central and field are much less important. So, while there is value in monitoring communications might there not be more value in simply denying them the tools they need to effectively communicate and coordinate?

Concerns about an American passenger prompted U.S. officials to bar a British Airways flight from U.S. airspace on Friday. The plane was heading from London to Mexico City when it was forced to turn around.

British press reports said Flight 243, a Boeing 747, had been airborne for two hours when U.S. officials discovered a “data discrepancy" involving a 55-year-old man who was traveling on a U.S. passport. The nature of the data discrepancy was not revealed, the Associated Press reported.

"This is the first time anyone can recall a British flight being banned from U.S. airspace," a security official told the British newspaper, The Sun.

British press reports said the incident shows how nervous U.S. authorities are following the attempted bombing of a U.S.-bound flight from Amsterdam on Christmas Day.

Not only did President Obama's envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference defend Palestinian Islamic Jihad's US representative Sami al-Arian, claiming that his prosecution was some kind of right-wing effort to quash dissent, the evidence of his views now seems to be disappearing down the memory hole. The story where he is quoted as defending al-Arian had been redacted to remove Rashad Hussain's statements.

President Obama’s newly appointed envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference [Rashad Hussain] was quoted in 2004 as saying an American who aided a Palestinian terrorist group was the victim of “politically motivated persecutions” who was being used “to squash dissent.” ....

On Saturday, Obama named the Texas-born, 31-year-old Indian-American as his envoy to the OIC, the 57-member bloc of Islamic states. The appointment is in line with the president’s goal, expressed in his speech in Cairo last June, to reach out to the Islamic world....

Around three years after the WRMEA article quoting Hussain first appeared, it was edited to remove all references to him.

A copy of the original 2004 article, retrieved via the Nexis news database, includes the following sentences:

Al-Arian’s situation is one of many “politically motivated persecutions,” claimed Rashad Hussain, a Yale law student. Such persecution, he stated, must be fought through hope, faith, and the Muslim vote (…) Along with many others, said Yale’s Hussain, Dr. Sami Al-Arian has been “used politically to squash dissent.” The Muslim community must speak out against the injustices taking place in America, he emphasized. Otherwise, everyone’s rights will be in jeopardy.

But in the version of the same story currently available on the WRMEA Web site those sentences – and only those sentences – have disappeared. An Internet archive search indicates that the edits were made sometime after October 2007.

The author of the story was contacted and claims she didn't make the changes. Which means someone at WRMEA is responsible. And since the group does seem to have an agenda, it's easy to see why they would be motivated to try and cover up Hussain's views.

Two new documents laying out the Obama administration's defense and homeland security strategy over the next four years describe the nation's terrorist enemies in a number of ways but fail to mention the words Islam, Islamic or Islamist.

The 108-page Quadrennial Homeland Security Review, made public last week by the Department of Homeland Security, uses the term "terrorist" a total of 66 times, "al Qaeda" five times and "violent extremism" or "extremist" 14 times. It calls on the U.S. government to "actively engage communities across the United States" to "stop the spread of violent extremism."

Yet in describing terrorist threats against the United States and the ideology that motivates terrorists, the review - like its sister document from the Pentagon, the Quadrennial Defense Review - does not use the words "Islam," "Islamic" or "Islamist" a single time.

A hardline Islamist group in Somalia has begun publicly whipping women for wearing bras that they claim violate Islam as they are ‘deceptive’.

The insurgent group Al Shabaab has sent gunmen into the streets of Mogadishu to round up any women who appear to have a firm bust, residents claimed yesterday.

The women are then inspected to see if the firmness is natural, or if it is the result of wearing a bra.

If they are found wearing a bra, they are ordered to remove it and shake their breasts, residents said.

A top Taliban commander who trains children to become suicide bombers has disproved reports that he was killed during a US Predator airstrike in mid-January.

Qari Hussain Mehsud, a senior lieutenant to Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan leader Hakeemullah Mehsud, spoke to a Pakistani news service on Feb. 14 to take credit for last week's deadly suicide attacks in Bannu. The dual suicide blasts targeted police in the district and killed 16 people, including Bannu's police chief and 12 other officers.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Doug Fieger, leader of the power pop band The Knack who sang on the 1979 hit "My Sharona," died Sunday. He was 57.

Fieger, a Detroit-area native, died at his home in Woodland Hills near Los Angeles after battling cancer, according to The Knack's manager, Jake Hooker.

Fieger formed The Knack in Los Angeles 1978, and the group quickly became a staple of Sunset Strip rock clubs. A year later he co-wrote and sang lead vocals on "My Sharona."

Fieger said the song, with its pounding drums and exuberant vocals, was inspired by a girlfriend of four years.

"I had never met a girl like her — ever," he told The Associated Press in a 1994 interview. "She induced madness. She was a very powerful presence. She had an insouciance that wouldn't quit. She was very self-assured. ... She also had an overpowering scent, and it drove me crazy."

With the leftist media atwitter about Texas Republican gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina's truther views, it also bears mentioning that one Democratic candidate and Houston businessman, Farouk Shami, espouses much the same views. In an interview last Friday with WFAA-TV (Dallas/Fort Worth), he not only openly expressed his truther views, but also his glaring racism against "white people":

Race became an issue in the Democratic primary for governor today.

Farouk Shami, the millionaire hair care products maker who's running, said he doesn't find many white people willing to work, so he says he hires Hispanics and blacks instead.

He made the comments responding to a question about whether the state should crack down on employers hiring illegal immigrants.

He also said he, too, would not disavow the conspiracy theory that the U.S. government was involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina said on Thursday that she has questions whether the U.S. government was involved in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, although she backpedaled from those remarks on Friday.

Shami declined at Monday's statewide televised debate to say if he backed a mandate on employers to use the E-Verify government database to check if new hires are in the country legally.

He was asked again during a taping of Inside Texas Politics.

Shami replied, “I find 80 percent of my employees at the factory are Hispanics. I don't find, you know, many white people really willing to work, you know, unfortunately.”

While still declining to answer the question, Shami said that at his Houston hair care products factory, Hispanics are vital to his business and the economy.

Asked to explain what he meant about not hiring many whites, he said they want special treatment. “A majority of the people are going to be Hispanic and African-American. You don't find white people who are willing to work in factories. And our history proves, you know, lots of time when they, you know, the white people come to work in a factory they either want to be supervisors or they want to be, you know, paid more than the average person. And unfortunately they exit.”

And then just a day after Medina, didn't reject the notion that the government was involved in the 9/11 attacks, Shami didn't either.

“I'm not sure. I am not going to really judge or answer about something I'm not really sure about. But the rumors are there that there was a conspiracy. True or not? It's hard to believe, you know, what happened. It's really hard to comprehend what happened. Maybe. I'm not sure.”

Ironically, he accused Democratic opponent and former Houston Mayor Bill White of racism just a few weeks ago. Shami hails from Ramallah in the West Bank and is a member of the notorious American Task Force for Palestine (along with White House party crasher Tareq Salahi). He has vowed to pump $10 million into his campaign for governor.

"Someone called in to say there was a person in another vehicle who pointed a weapon at them. Officers found that vehicle and tried to conduct a stop but that vehicle did not stop and as a result, officers conducted a pursuit," said Arlington Police Department spokeswoman Tiara Ellis Richard.

The chase went on for 20 minutes but came to an end when the truck spun out on Rosedale.

Officers took a man and a woman into custody.

WFAA has learned that the woman is Kimberly Homsi; she also goes by the name Asma Al- Homsi.

He expressed his disgust at being "forced to look at the backside of a woman who bends over in front of me in supermarket to pick an item off a bottom shelf". It is a health hazard, he says.

"Non-Muslim women do not use water to clean themselves when they go to the toilet." Thus, bending over in a supermarket could cause serious health risks.

Therefore, I'd suggest that Mr. Hassan's contention is unsupportable. It's probably a religion of peace and tolerance thing.

(The Hill) - Lobbyists enjoyed record revenues while the rest of the country was struggling amid a deep recession, according to a report out Friday.

Last year saw a more than 5 percent increase in lobbying expenditures as compared to 2008, said a new report released Friday by the Center for Responsive Politics, a campaign finance watchdog.

The economy stunk. Corporations slashed jobs. And some firms, once juggernauts of American industry, simply ceased to exist.

But for federal lobbyists, 2009 proved to be a year of riches unlike any other, a Center for Responsive Politics analysis indicates.

In all, federal lobbyists’ clients spent more than $3.47 billion last year, often driven to Washington, D.C.’s power centers and halls of influence by political issues central to the age: health care reform, financial reform, energy policy.

In the continuing cycle of violence in Yemen, police opened fire at a hospital, killing one and wounding six. Another person was killed later in a separate incident.

The latest deaths occurred today when a group of southern activists attempted to retrieve the corpse of a protester killed February 2. Police guards at Ibn Khaldun hospital in the town of Hutah opened fire on the group, wounding seven. Abdullah Muhammad Al-Baqery, 45, died of his injuries.

Police used live ammunition and tear gas to disburse the crowds that swelled with news of the al Baqery’s death. Saeed Abdullah Alcaoui was killed by police. Five protesters were arrested.

Hutah is in Lahj governorate, a hotbed of the independence movement in south Yemen. The Al Hirak movement is calling for the dissolution of the unified state. About 70% of southerners favor independence. The southern governorates witnessed escalating protests since 2007 often triggered by arbitrary arrests and violence against the unarmed protesters.

The arrests of journalists who report on the unrest are another trigger for clashes. Public outrage at the closure of al Ayyam newspaper in May was dwarfed by the outpouring when its editors were arrested.

Hashim Bashraheel, 68, and his two sons Mohammed and Hani were arrested in January. Amnesty International has repeatedly warned that the trio is at high risk for torture. Journalist Mohammed al Maqaleh was brought to court this week after four months of torture including beatings and mock executions.

Reuters makes sure to point out that the police in India are telling us "not to jump to conclusions". Okay, we won't. This isn't jumping to conclusions: violent Islamists did this. Beginning and end of story.

Probably Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), the group that brought you the Mumbai massacre, had a hand in it. You'll remember that many of the communications between Chicago's David Headley and his LeT handlers were for him to quit focusing on attacking Denmark and spend his time scoping out targets in India instead. In addition to helping do recon work for the Mumbai attacks, Headley spent time in many additional communities in India -- sometimes posing as a Jew himself in order to case Jewish targets.

Headley's passport showed that he visited Pune, the city where today's attack took place. This is a strong indication that LeT was behind the attack. While I'll admit it's speculation, the links between the LeT and Headley's visit to Pune at their behest are too glaringly obvious to overlook. Just like his "business trips" to Mumbai, odds are that Headley was in Pune with a view in mind of finding suitable targets for a terror attack by the LeT.

All of this suggests that:
a) LeT was behind the attack
b) that an American may have helped plan it.

[inserted update] A Times of India article linked by Robert Spencer (and not nearly as PC as Reuters) notes that while in Pune, David Headley stayed at the Ashram Center which is located adjacent to the restaurant which was targeted. The restaurant was frequented by the center's European visitors. /update

But if not LeT, India has its fair share of Islamist radicals. And the long border with Pakistan also make it a prime target for other Pakistani based jihad groups.

A bomb ripped through a packed restaurant in the Indian city of Pune on Saturday, killing at least eight people including one foreigner in the country's first big attack since the 2008 Mumbai massacre...

Police said the bomb was hidden in a bag left in the German Bakery restaurant, a favorite of Jewish and European visitors, when it was full of tourists on Saturday evening.

"We heard a big noise and we all rushed out. The impact was so much that there were tiny body parts everywhere," said Vinod Dhale, an employee at the bakery....

Debris was strewn all around the bakery, located near an ashram or religious retreat which is also frequented by foreigners, and a Jewish center.

NEAR MARJAH, Afghanistan – Helicopter-borne U.S. Marines and Afghan troops swooped down on the Taliban-held town of Marjah before dawn Saturday, launching a long-expected attack to re-establish government control and undermine support for militants in their southern heartland.

The assault on Marjah is the biggest offensive since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan and will serve as a major test of a new NATO strategy focusing on protecting civilians. The attack is also the first major combat operation since President Barack Obama ordered 30,000 U.S. reinforcements here in December to try to turn the tide of the war.

Marine commanders say they expect between 400 to 1,000 insurgents to be holed up inside this southern Afghan town of 80,000 people in Helmand province, including more than 100 foreign fighters. Marjah is the biggest southern town under Taliban control and the linchpin of the militants' logistical and opium-smuggling network.

"The first wave of choppers has landed inside Marjah. The operation has begun," said Capt. Joshua Winfrey, commander of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, which was at the forefront of the attack.

He warned that aerobics class moves could also spark sexual desire.

Yay, its not just me anymore. Now that the WaPo has an excellent article on the infiltration of al Qaeda to the Yemeni security and intelligence forces, I'm feeling a tad less lonely. Of course, some um, passport offices, financial exchange offices and other sensitive positions are currently held by "recently reformed" convicted al Qaeda operatives, not to mention the older bin Laden loyalists serving as governors and ambassadors, rewarded after the 1994 civil war. Jihaddis in ties, as I say.

There is one section of the Washington Post article seems to be getting a lot of play in Yemen so, just to be nice, I am posting the original entry from History Commons: first theres's 1990- 1998, Zawaheri frequently visits Yemen (Hello?) then as follows (PSO shelters Zawaheri) Spring-Summer 1998: Yemeni Officials Help Al-Qaeda with Knowledgeable Defector

Ahmed Nasrallah, a veteran al-Qaeda operative who has been in Yemen for several years, decides to defect and turn himself in to the Yemeni government. He discloses the location of al-Qaeda strongholds in Yemen and even gives away the location of al-Qaeda’s deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a southern Yemeni town. He describes al-Qaeda’s weaponry, security, and violent plans for the future. He offers to spy on al-Qaeda in Afghanistan or on a militant Yemeni group led by Zein al-Abidine Almihdhar, a relative of hijacker Khalid Almihdhar. (In 1999 Zein will be caught and executed in Yemen for kidnappings and killings.) However, two officials in the Political Security Organization (Yemen’s equivalent of the FBI) have radical militant ties and hand over Nasrallah to al-Qaeda operatives. These operatives plan to kill him for betraying their group, but he escapes to Egypt before they can do so.

Yemen as a stagnant political system has many, most of the same players playing now as in the 1980's and '90's. For example, Ali Al Ansi, head of the National Security, has been Saleh's office manager since 1982. Head of the PSO, Al Qamish also has been around forever. So the argument that these close ties to bin Laden were a decade ago doesn't reassure me much. The article I wrote early in Feb. 2009 referencing a deal between Zawaheri and Yemeni President Saleh was based on current reporting but fits quite nicely into the overall pattern.

The second terror attack on the South Korean's in March 2009 wasn't a result of a small leak, just one subverted guy passing information, which is why even the Parliament started complaining openly. OK here's a bit from the excellent WaPo:

"Al-Qaeda has a very aggressive effort to get whatever information they can from those individuals (in the Political Security Organization)," said a senior Obama Administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

In 2006, al-Qaeda militants broke out of a maximum-security prison in 2006. Today, senior Yemeni officials acknowledge that PSO officials with sympathies to al-Qaeda facilitated the jail break.

"It could not have happened without people deeply inside the PSO," said Abdul Karim al-Iriyani, a former prime minister and current political adviser to Yemen's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh...

Senior Yemeni officials said they do not believe that Surmi was an al-Qaeda infiltrator, but said he sought to abuse his position for financial again. Surmi, said Iriyani, was removed from his position partly because he ran a scheme in which, for $20,000 a person, he provided fake Yemeni passports and "shipped" non-Yemeni jihadists returning from Afghanistan to Europe or Latin America.

"He went to the highest bidder," added Iriyani. "He could easily have been hired by al-Qaeda."

Senior Yemeni officials publicly insist the PSO, which is responsible for day-to-day security in Yemen, is not infiltrated by Islamic extremists today.

"It's serving the country, and they are doing their job," said Mohammed al-Anisi, the nation's intelligence chief. (ed- this is another one, and his name is Ali Mohammed al Ansi). "These stories are totally wrong."

U.S. officials, though, remain concerned. And Yemeni counterterrorism officials are not taking chances. On Dec. 17, Yemeni forces, backed by the United States, launched an airstrike on suspected al-Qaeda militants in Abyan province as well as two raids in and around Sana'a. According to two senior Yemeni government officials briefed on the operation, the PSO was not informed of the operation until it was over.

Proving once again that if the choice comes down to bringing that super cool high quality samurai sword you bought from late night TV's The Knife Show -- because you never know when you might find an apostate or adulterer who needs beheading, and man, when you behead someone you might as well do it with style -- or that extra heavy parka that 14 year old wife #3 got you last year for Eid and keeps bugging you about because you never wear it; leave the sword, bring the parka.

The Global Post has an in-depth piece on al Qaeda's Somali affiliate, the al Shabaab. Of special interest:

Hardened foreign fighters have brought with them a radical ideology of global jihad and some — such as a white U.S. citizen known as Al-Amriki — have taken prominent field commander roles.

Foreign fighters and even suicide bombers have joined Al Shabaab from the Somali diaspora in the United States and Europe. More than 20 young men from Minnesota are believed to have joined Al Shabaab. One of them, 26-year-old Shirwa Ahmed, blew himself up in a suicide attack in the northern Somali region of Puntland in 2008.

The man responsible for another deadly suicide bombing in Mogadishu in early December 2009 was a young Somali man from Denmark. A former Al Shabaab fighter told GlobalPost he had met Americans while he was a member of the armed group.

This foreign influence is changing Al Shabaab from a local insurgent group with national ambitions into a growing player in the wider battle between Islam and the West.

In related news, the al Shabaab are again making a play at Mogadishu. As we speak, the al Qaeda linked group is fighting for control of the city. Scores dead in the past few days since the assault began.

All Praise and All Thanks are for Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) to whom we shall all return to be judged on The Last Day.

In the past year, we have witnessed yet again the arrogance of the kuffar, and yet again seen their aim of dividing us in order to make it easier for them to achieve their stated goal of changing Deen Al-Islam. For, not long ago, certain “scholars for dollars” asked Muslims to spy on their brothers and sisters on behalf of the kuffar.

Since the Jumaadi Al-Thaani attacks, the kuffar have made repeated attempts to recruit Muslims to spy on their brothers and sisters, as they often repeat their kaffir mantra that what the kuffar call "moderate Muslims" have a duty to report to the kaffir authorities any Muslim engaging in what the kuffar call "extremist activities", or expressing "extremist views".

Considering these on-going attempts, by the kuffar, to divide Muslim against Muslim and to get Muslims to aid the kuffar, it is important that we not only understand what the ruling is on spying for the kuffar, but also understand the Ploys used by the kuffar to try and persuade Muslims to work for them and aid them.

The Ruling on Spying:

It is haram for a Muslim to aid the kuffar against the Muslims.
Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab - Rahimahullah - gathered ten actions that negate one's Islam (Nawaqid ul-'Ashr), the eighth one of which states: "Assisting the disbelievers (against the believers) (Mudhaharatul Mushrikeen) and supporting them against the believers is one of the actions that negates of one's Islam...
"Whoever expresses Tawalli towards the disbelievers (Tawalli Kuffar) and supports and helps them against the believers, then such constitutes apostasy by one's (proceeding) actions. It is obligatory to apply the rules of apostasy upon such a person as is proved by The Book, the Sunnah and the consensus of the scholars." Sheikh Abdullah ibn Humaid: Ad-Durrar 15/479

Spying for the kuffar is aiding the kuffar, and is haram and any Muslim who does such a thing has negated their Islam. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says:
"Do not spy on each other, and do not complain about each other." 49:12 Interpretation of Meaning

It was narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet, Muhammad (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Do not give in to suspicion, for suspicion is a dishonourable kind of speech, and do not seek to find faults in others. Do not spy on one another..." Bukhari, Vol 8, Book 73, 92 (See also Bukhari, Vol 7, Book 62, 74)

It was narrated from Yahya from Malik from Abu'z-Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Prophet, Muhammad (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Beware of suspicion. Suspicion is a most dishonourable kind of speech. Do not spy on each other... Do not turn away from each other - rather, as slaves of Allah, be brothers." Malik, Muwatta: Book 47, Number 47, 4.15

It was narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar that the Prophet, Muhammad (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Because a Muslim is a brother to other Muslims, he should neither oppress them, nor hand them over to the enemies of the Muslims. Whoever helps his brother, then Allah will help him; whoever saves his brother from distress, Allah will save from distress, and whoever shields his brother, Allah will shield him." Bukhari: Vol 3, Book 43, 622
It should be understand that passing any information about a Muslim to the kuffar authorities, which may help the kuffar in any way, is haram. There are no exceptions whatsoever. Thus, even if a Muslim residing in Dar al-Harb knows some information about a brother or a sister, or has some suspicions about them, and disagrees with what that brother or sister is doing, or saying or planning, or is alleged to be saying, or doing or planning, then their duty, as a Muslim - their duty to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala - is quite clear: it is to speak honourably about that brother or sister, or to remain silent. For it was narrated on the authority of Abu Hariara that the Prophet (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:
"He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should either speak honourably or be silent." Muslim, Book 1, 75
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says:

"It did not concern you when you repeated that about which you had no [personal] knowledge, even though Allah regards this as a dishonourable thing." 24:15 Interpretation of Meaning

Being Muslim means being loyal to our brothers and sisters; it means saving them from distress; it means defending and shielding them, even if this gets us into trouble with the kaffir authorities, and even if we do not ourselves agree, for whatever reason, with what a particular brother or sister has done or is alleged to have done. A Muslim is more treasured to us than any kaffir.
"You are the best of people among all peoples, for you command Al-Maruf and forbid Al-Munkar, and you submit [in belief] to Allah." 3: 110 Interpretation of Meaning

Being Muslim means being honourable, and doing our duty to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and His Messenger (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says:
"The believers are as one family." 49:10 Interpretation of Meaning
"Be loyal and do your duty to Allah; fear Him and always speak with honour. He will direct you to do honourable deeds and will forgive your mis-deeds. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will achieve the greatest achievement of all." 33:70-71 Interpretation of Meaning

What some Muslims seem to have forgotten is that our first duty is to obey Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Our duty is not to obey the kuffar if the doing of such a duty harms in any way any Muslim. [See Note 1] Furthermore, it must be remembered that Justice - like honour - resides with and derives from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Justice does not reside in some kaffir law, or in some kaffir Court, and it cannot be obtained through some kaffir trial in such a kaffir Court of Law. On The Last Day we will all be judged by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala - we cannot escape this Day, this judgement, and the final verdict of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala knows all that we say and do.

It is this judgement, by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, which matters, not the so-called "justice" of the kuffar. When the kuffar talk about "justice", they mean their manufactured, fallible, justice. When we speak about justice we mean the perfect, infallible, inescapable justice of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. We do not look toward the rewards of this life - and certainly not to the reward or rewards which they kuffar may offer us to betray our brothers and sisters. Instead, as Muslims we look toward the reward of Jannah which Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala can bestow on us - for it is Jannah, and not the rewards and temptations of this world, which motivate us, or which should motivate us if we strive to obey only Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.
"Allah is the Wali of those who believe: from darkness, He leads them into the light, while those do not believe have, as their Wali, their Taghut so that they are led from light into darkness. For them, there is the Fire, where they shall dwell forever." 2: 257 Interpretation of Meaning

Ploys used by the kuffar to try and persuade Muslims to work for them and aid them.
The Kaffir Appeal to "Moderate Muslims":

That is, many Muslims are aware that the kuffar are striving to manufacture what they call "moderate Muslims" who adhere to an "Islam" which the kuffar find acceptable.

This "moderate Islam" - which the kuffar find acceptable and which they have the arrogance to tell us represents "true Islam" - is the so-called "Islam" which accepts and condones the kaffir invasion and occupation of Muslim lands, and which finds it acceptable to have a kaffir puppet government in such lands. This so-called "Islam" is the Islam which denies the duty of practical Jihad against invaders and aggressors, and which tolerates and even allows Muslims to hand over their brothers and sisters to the kuffar to be imprisoned, tortured or killed. This "moderate Islam" is the so-called Islam of the moderate Muslims who find it acceptable to spy on their brothers and sisters and who give information to the kuffar about their brothers and sisters so that those brothers and sisters can suffer distress, humiliation and dishonour at the hands of the kuffar. This "moderate Islam" is the so-called Islam of the moderate Muslims who find the manufactured kaffir concepts of the nation-State, and democracy acceptable, and who see no harm in accepting the overlordship of the kaffir manufactured organization the United Nations, and who think that the laws and treaties and conventions of that kaffir manufactured organization represent "truth" and "justice" and can and should apply to Muslims. This "moderate Islam" is the so-called Islam of those who imitate the kuffar.

Another ploy used by the kuffar in their plan to divide Muslims and so make it easier for the kuffar to implement their Zionist-Crusader so-called New World Order in the lands of the Muslims, is the appeal for us to "renounce hatred and violence".

As usual, the kuffar are being utterly hypocritical - for they are the ones using extreme violence against Muslims, as evident in the invasion and occupation of our lands; in their killing of Muslims. They are the ones who have a hatred, a contempt, of those Muslims who refuse to imitate the kuffar and who thus refuse to abandon their duty of Jihad, who refuse to bow down to the kuffar and the idols of the kuffar, such as "democracy", and who refuse to accept that the manufactured, fallible, values and laws of the kuffar are "universal" and must be accepted by Muslims. This hatred, this contempt, of the kuffar for us is so evident in the treatment of Muslims by the kuffar in the Land of the Two Rivers, in Sheeshan, in Afghanistan and elsewhere - in the torture of Muslims; in the humiliation of Muslims; in the imprisonment of tens of thousands of Muslims, world-wide.

Therefore, before they talk to us about "peace", about tolerance, about renouncing violence and hatred, let the kuffar themselves renounce violence and hatred - let them totally cease to interfere in our affairs; let their invading and occupying armies leave our lands; let them cease to install puppet governments in our lands; let them cease to keep the corrupt rulers of our land in power; let them cease to tell us how to behave; let them cease to dictate to us as to what Islam is; let them cease to imprison us, torture us. Let them cease trying to divide us by using their ploy of "extremism".

Furthermore, it was narrated by Abu Da'ud that the Prophet (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever loves for Allah, hates for Allah, gives for Allah, and withholds for Allah, is correctly striving for the Deen." [Refer to Sheikh ul-Islam ibn Tamayyah (Rahimahullah): Al Furqan bayana Awliya ar Rahman wa awliya ash-Shaitan, ch. 2]

As Sheikh ul-Islam ibn Tamayyah (Rahimahullah) said:
"Shahadah - to declare there is no god but Allah - requires you to love only for the sake of Allah, to hate only for the sake of Allah, to ally yourself only for the sake of Allah, to declare hatred only for the sake of Allah; it requires you to love what Allah has said should be loved and to hate what Allah has said must be hated." (al-Ihtijaj bil-Qadar, 62)

That is, hating our enemies is part of our Islam, just as fighting our enemies - using force to remove them from our lands - is part of our Islam. The tame, kaffir-imitating so-called "moderate Muslims" may not like this - it might not fit in with their kaffir-derived vision of life - but that is how it is, for those who refuse to imitate the kuffar and for those who submit only to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.

CNN: Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Four bodies, including two bound and gagged women, were found in a compound in southeast Afghanistan, officials said Friday.

The bodies of the two women and two men -- who were not bound and gagged --were found during a joint operation between Afghan and NATO forces in Paktia province Thursday.

Eight men were detained for questioning and ISAF and Afghan forces were investigating.

ISAF originally said that the bodies of three women had been found.

Later at home, Hill discovered that she had captured most of the incident on videotape and it was then that she discovered the power of internet blogs. She uploaded her video to the internet and asked for help in identifying the man shown in the tape.

A group of Muslim scholars says it supports airline safety, but it is "deeply concerned" about the use of airport scanners that show nude images of the human body.

“The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) emphasizes that a general and public use of such scanners is against the teachings of Islam, natural law and all religions and cultures that stand for decency and modesty,” the group said in a Feb. 10 statement posted at Islam Online.

"It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women," FCNA explained. The group noted that Islam emphasizes modesty, considering it part of the faith. "The Qur'an has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts" and to be modest in their dress.

While exceptions can be made in cases of "extreme necessity," FCNA indicated that passenger body scans do not rise to that level.

Earlier we noted that the Islamist forums were seething at a purported "fake image of Muhammad" which was reprinted in a Norwegian newspaper. Perplexing, since all drawings and cartoons are by definition "fakes".

Do I really need to elaborate on the death threats that accompanied the news? Which are only slightly more disconcerting than usual given that the person noting said alleged blasphemy about He-who-must-not-be-drawn calls himself "Pagan Slayer".

But it turns out by "fake" they meant, well, check it out for yourself:

There were concerns that this link could cause riots in both Norway and Pakistan. The story was illustrated with a screenshot. While the PST story was ignored, and various people are now claiming it was a non-issue all along, Muslim taxi drivers in Oslo went on strike twice to protest the Dagbladet story. Several protests are planned for tomorrow.
