Breaking: Three Americans May Have Been Kidnapped In Northern Iraq

WASHINGTON — The United States said Friday it was investigating reports that three Americans have been abducted in northern Iraq.

"Embassy Baghdad is aware of the reports and is investigating," State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood said, referring to reports he said were on Al-Jazeera Television, an Arab satellite station based in Qatar.

Astroturfing Sarah Palin

The little note about YouTube constantly pulling the video is annoying, but it's worth the watch.

To be honest, I was kind of scratching my head through some of this. Of course those who are constantly haranguing Sarah Palin aren't the "independents" the MSM portrays them as. But isn't this what partisans do? You know, engage in partisan politics. It will come as news only to those who are clueless about how "grassroots" campaigns really work.

But it's worth the watch if only to show that these so-called "independent" complaint-filers are nothing of the sort. They are partisans and more: left-wing activists.

The next time one of your buddies tells you that they saw a report on MSNBC last night about an "independent" investigation revealing more ethical lapses by Palin, considered yourself armed for battle.

Now, what I'd really like to see is some more evidence that David "Astroturf" Axelrod was involved in the coordination of this "independent grass roots movement" against Sarah Palin. Something that would color me least surprised man on Earth.

Paper Blows U.S. Military Beheading Gay Iraqi Civilians Scandal Wide Open

I'm pissed that the Washington Blade even reported these idiotic and baseless accusations.

Too. Pissed. To. Write. Coherently.

On cue, Daily Kos promotes the story.

Excuse me, there are a few heads that need smashing. Some over at the Blade, others over at Kos.

UPDATE: You know the thing that really bothers me? When you have an accusation this big, yet there is no evidence to support that accusation, even to run the story with big question marks in it is to reveal your underlying assumptions.

In this case, both the Blade and Kos diarists and readers reveal that they believe that this is what Red State America is like. Some of these nutjobs actually think that because you voted against Prop 8 that you would kill homosexuals were you given a gun and went unsupervised by your betters.

It's why people like me couldn't believe the accusations over abuse during the Abu Ghraib scandal -- because I didn't want to believe it and it didn't mesh with my underlying view of what people in the military are like.

On the other hand many on the Left were quick to believe the accusations -- before any evidence was shown -- that our military abused prisoners. And worse.

Same goes for accusations of our military murdering people. I want a lot of evidence before I'll even consider that the accusations might be true. On the other hand, the accusation is enough for some of these people. A full blown investigation should be launched, in their view, over ever allegation of abuse -- because such accusations mesh with their underlying view of what people in the military are like.

Killers. Anti-gay killers. Sadists. Misogynists.

Call someone a fag, and the next thing you know you'll cut their head off.

Investigate! Investigate! Investigate!

CODE PINK Protests Against Beauty Products

It's not clear exactly what Code Pink members are jazzed about but they have been protesting (pic) in bikinis against the Ahava Company, an Israeli company in Mitzpe Shalem settlement, which makes beauty products.

Code Pink contends that Ahava products violate the Geneva Convention. The protesters demand that the company stop selling beauty products.

How all this hubbub ties into Code Pink's purported antiwar philosophy hasn't been clearly explained. However, based upon my observations of Code Pink members, they could be allergic to beauty products. In fact, I've seen pictures of some members who appear to be allergic to soap.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela's top prosecutor insisted Thursday that freedom of expression in Venezuela "must be limited" and proposed legislation that would slap additional restrictions on the country's news media.

The new law would punish the owners of radio stations, television channels and newspapers that have attempted to "cause panic" and "disturb social peace," Attorney General Luisa Ortega said.

WASHINGTON -- The White House said Thursday it was reviewing what has turned out to be a wildly popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns the $1 billion budget for rebates for new auto purchases may have been exhausted in only a week.

Transportation Department officials called lawmakers' offices earlier Thursday to alert them of plans to suspend the program as early as Friday. But a White House official said later the program had not been suspended and officials there were assessing their options.

"We are working tonight to assess the situation facing what is obviously an incredibly popular program," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said of the Car Allowance Rebate System.

Oops. Sorry, President Obama, and the Democratic controlled Congress....

Diplomas w/o Exam for Special-Ed Students

(Sacramento, California) Currently, satisfactory grades on the California High School Exit Exam are required to receive a high school diploma, however, that will soon change. Pending legislation will eliminate the exam requirement for special education students. Reportedly, 16,000 special education students fail the exam every year and are denied diplomas.

Consequently, employers interviewing job applicants are in a pickle when seeing prospective new hires with high school diplomas from California. Either they know something, having passed the exit exam, or they received a diploma because they're special.

I suggest that the awarding of diplomas to students who don't pass the exit exam devalues all high school diplomas earned in California.

Warship Honors Marine Who Died Protecting Comrades

The Navy's newest destroyer bears a name that's familiar to Marines. The ship that'll be christened on Saturday at Bath Iron Works bears the name of Cpl. Jason Dunham, a Marine who jumped on a grenade to save his comrades in 2004 in Iraq.

Dunham's parents, Deb and Dan Dunham, will be at the Maine shipyard along with other Marines who served with him in Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines.

Nigerian Soldiers Capture Radical Muslim Sect Leader

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria -- Nigerian security forces captured the leader of a radical Islamic sect responsible for days of clashes which have killed more than 180 people, police in the northern state of Borno said on Thursday.

"Mohammed Yusuf has been arrested. He is now at the Giwa barracks," Borno state police commissioner Christopher Dega told reporters.

Bursts of gunfire rang out in the city of Maiduguri and helicopters hovered overhead as the police and army went from door to door hunting followers of radical preacher Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of the Boko Haram sect.

The violence erupted when members of the group, which wants a wider adoption of sharia (Islamic law) across Africa's most populous nation, were arrested on Sunday in Bauchi state on suspicion of planning an attack on a police station.

Oh, and his home and "mosque headquarters" were destroyed earlier. His followers were scattered all over the place, dead as doornails.

100 Dead Nigerian Taliban

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Security forces hunted door-to-door for Islamic militants in northern Nigeria on Thursday after storming the compound of a radical sect and killing more than 100 people.

A top rights group said the government forces had killed bystanders and other civilians. A military spokesman denied the charge and said it was impossible for rights workers to tell who was a civilian and who was a member of the Boko Haram sect, which the government blames for instigating days of violence in the mostly Muslim region.

...An AP reporter saw soldiers shoot their way into the mosque under fire and then rake those inside with gunshots...The reporter later counted about 50 bodies inside the building and another 50 in the courtyard outside.

The bodies of barefoot young men littered the streets of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, on Thursday morning... ...Police said most of the dead were fighters with Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sin" in the local Hausa language.

Now that's just good strategy. Kill em all, let Allah sort em out.

Scotland: A Film Showing A Woman Shoving Torn Pages Of The Bible Into Her Panties Sparks Protests

A queer exhibition which features film of a woman stuffing torn pages of the Bible down her underwear has sparked protests from Christians in Scotland.

The exhibition, Made In God’s Image exhibition in Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, is billed as an exploration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, and has also prompted visitors to complain after Bible artwork was daubed with graffiti.

Christian artist Jane Clarke invited guests to annotate a copy of the Bible with their names, stories and experiences in order to “write themselves in” to the text.

The gallery has now placed her exhibit, Untitled 2009, in a glass case to stop the Bible being defaced.

Clarke, a minister at the Metropolitan Community Church, a ministry aimed at LGBT people, the creator of the piece, said she is “saddened” that some visitors had chosen to deface her work.

“It was never my intention to offend anyone,” she said.

“I had hoped that people would show respect for the Bible, for Christianity and indeed for the Gallery of Modern Art.

Case Closed: Birtherism

I don't often bring up the fact that I'm a political scientist by training and profession, but reading Gabriel Malor's excellent piece on why the birthers just don't get it that the Constitution clearly gives the electoral college electors (which the states have seen fit to check by popular vote) and Congress the final say on who is fit to be President, is just way too good to pass up. Read it all. He's right.

It's why a vocal minority of Bush supporters were aghast at the whole Bush v. Gore thing: Congress, not the courts, are to be the arbitrators of elections. And since Republicans controlled both Houses at the time, we would have won no matter what the courts said.

After you're done reading Article II, sec. 1 and Amendment XII it might also do you some good to read Amendment XIV which explains why even the children of illegal aliens born in the US are "natural born citizens" -- all attempts by Congress to limit citizenship by law be damned.

If you don't like that fact then offer an amendment. I'd support it.

Don't try to bring up laws that haven't been enforced in decades about dual citizenship. Those laws are null and void because they are unconstitutional. You can't "automatically" lose citizenship as some claim. It's a formal process.

Don't cite the federal code either, because when laws cease to be enforced they are not "taken off the books". You might as well cite laws still on the books giving a man permission to beat his wife once a month, as long as the switch's circumference is no bigger than your thumb. Laws are what are enforced, not what are on the books.

So, even if you were correct about the vast conspiracy to cover up Obama's real birthplace --- which you're not, a Certificate of Live Birth is a birth certificate so Obama has already provided his birth certificate (let alone overlooking the vast conspiracy which would need to be involved with the falsification of newspapers dating back to the week that Obama was born in which his birth was announced in Hawaii) -- there is no judicial remedy to it.

There is only a political remedy. They're called elections.

It's not only a dumb issue it's a dead issue.

Congressional elections are just around the corner. It's time to get fired up about electing Representatives and Senators who will check Obama's disastrous fiscal policies.

It was signed off by Noordin Top, with the title of 'emir of Tandzim Al Qaeda Indonesia', a breakaway faction of the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) militant group.

The message said that a meeting hosted by American businessman James Castle at the Marriott was targeted specifically because its participants represented companies that exploited Indonesia's resources, the profits of which go towards helping 'infidel American soldiers' fight Muslims.

The Ritz-Carlton bombing, it added, was intended as a reminder to Indonesians not to idolise[sic] the Manchester United footballers, which it described as crusaders unfit for the respect of Muslims.

Pakistani Leader Who Created Militia to Fight Taliban Killed

The Taliban assassinated a tribal leader who organized resistance to the Taliban in the northwestern district of Shangla.

More than 50 Taliban fighters assaulted the home of Khalil Rehman, a tribal leader who raised a Lashkar, or local militia, to battle the Taliban in the isolated district that borders Swat and Buner. Rehman's son and two others were also wounded in the assault. Two Taliban fighters were killed after police and other security forces responded to the attack, Daily Times reported.

...The Taliban have viciously responded to efforts by tribal leaders to oppose the spread of extremism in the tribal areas. Tribal opposition has been violently attacked and defeated in Peshawar, Dir, Arakzai, Khyber, and Swat. Suicide bombers have struck at tribal meetings held at mosques, schools, hotels, and homes.

At first glance Yaghi's Facebook account seemed so ordinary. Hence why all his friends are shocked, neighbors all describe the ringleader's family as nice people, and the "banality of evil" reference. But on a deeper analysis of "hidden" information, it becomes clear that Yaghi had jihadi aspirations for some time.

Ziyad sees fit to respond to the martyr wish on June 8, only four days before he gets on the plane to Israel hoping to meet up with the "resistance" in Palestine, with an "inshallah" (God willing).

The finger in the sign of #1 is not what you think it is. The one finger signifies the unity of Allah. Ziyad is in fact mimicking a pose that is common to Islamist fighters. I've seen hundreds of similar pictures, many of them of mujahideen in Chechnya.

Obi-One certainly seems to be loosing that luster and confidence. He stutters every time he talks about "taxing Cadillac plans" so on and so forth as if he is ashamed or trying to hide that he's going to tax you. Like a kid finally admitting he threw the baseball though the window.

Six months out he looks to be in trouble almost desperate. He's chosen all the wrong issues. Now suddenly at a time when we have a black president, race is suddenly a hot topic.

Things just aren't working for him at the moment. He needs to make some changes and quick. Maybe make "teleprompter" chief of staff or something. I dunno.

The cold winds of 1977 may be returning to blow on the Obama Whitehouse this winter. Which is a damn scary thought, may God forbid.

Haldeman was a meticulous note taker who wrote in longhand on yellow legal notepads.

Phil Mellinger, a former analyst at the National Security Agency who has delved into the notes, reports, testimony and evidence relating to Watergate, said he had a “eureka” moment in October last year when he visited the [redacted]

An assistant brought them out but there were only two pages. They had four sets of holes in the top left-hand corner, suggesting that staples had been taken out and new ones inserted later.

“Wow — [redacted] the discussion of Watergate was ending,” Mellinger told The Times of London, “The first page of notes went right up to the time they started discussing Watergate. I [redacted] was about the last minute of the 18-minute discussion.”

Kenya Arrests Four Dutchmen Near Somalia Border

On suspicion of aiding Alqaeda linked Al Shabaab.

Bartamaha. MOMBASA, KENYA (Reuters) – Kenyan police are questioning four Dutch passport-holders who were arrested on suspicion of aiding Somalia’s al Shabaab insurgents, a local government official said on Wednesday.

The four men — three who were born in Morocco and the fourth in Somalia — were stopped by police on Monday while on their way to Kiunga on the Kenya-Somalia border.

“The al Shabaab group has been receiving humanitarian and technical help from foreigners and we suspect the people we have in custody were in that area to do exactly that,” Stephen Ikua, Lamu district commissioner, said.

Simone Bitton is a French-Israeli director who numbers among the 479 Israelis who called for a complete boycott of Israel during the Israel Defense Forces incursion into Gaza to stop rockets from exploding in Sderot.

Obviously, Bitton exempted her own endeavors from the call.

Bitton has now directed the film Rachel, a documentary on Rachel Corrie. If there is any doubt regarding Bitton’s politics or the film’s slant, note that the documentary tours film festivals along with Cindy Corrie, Rachel’s mother and a propagandist for the likes of Hamas and the International Solidarity Movement — groups committed to Israel’s destruction.

One would expect Bitton’s work to be showcased by the usual gaggle of progressives and ultra-liberal church groups intent on destroying the Jewish state.

But in the San Francisco area? The Jewish Film Festival shows Bitton’s work.

Peter Stein, the festival’s director, knew exactly what he was doing in selecting this film. Stein was familiar with both Bitton’s work and her politics. He invited the American Friends Service Committee, now helping with the boycott of Israeli goods, to participate in the showing.

Stein also had on his board Rachel Pfeffer, the interim director of Jewish Voice for Peace — a group committed to the destruction of the Jewish state. (Since Rachel Pfeffer’s outing as JVP director, her biography on the festival web site has been thoroughly cleansed.)

Banality of Evil: An Indicted Terrorist's Facebook Account

UPDATE: Okay, thanks to a friend in NC I've found a bunch of pics of Ziyad Yaghi playing jihad with his buddies on Facebook.

An indictment against Ziyad Yaghi, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and six others was unsealed earlier this week alleging that the ring had conspired to fund, facilitate, and commit acts of violent jihad -- including murder -- abroad. An eighth American tied to the group, Jude Kenan Mohammad, was arrested in Pakistan last year near the Afghan border carrying a laptop computer. He is still on the loose.

Ziyad Yaghi was the one who traveled to Jordan and Israel "to engage in violent jihad". Both times, it appears, he was unsuccessful.

As I've mentioned several times in regards to this case, they've probably left cyber tracks of their activities on the web. The majority of these types of Islamists keen on joining the "caravan of martyrs" to the lands of jihad start out on the forums.

This morning reader Tony found Ziyad Yaghi's facebook account.

In looking through Yaghi's 129 Facebook friends, I didn't find any accounts that overtly belonged to any of the other seven in the ring. A lot of what appeared to be relatives, friends from various colleges, and what seem to be friends who went to the same K-12 schools as Yaghi.

At least one of his friends from NC State can be seen with a Muslim Student Association t-shirt over his face. Was Yaghi a student at NC State and was he a member of the MSA?

In fact, his Facebook page seems quite ... unextrodinary.

It's a reminder othat Hannah Arendt was right in describing the great evils of this world as carried out by people who are by all measures ordinary. Hence, all the comments from Daniel Boyd's neighbors that the family of would-be jihadists seemed so nice.

Second Somali pleads guilty in al Shabaab terror case

salahosmanAhmed.jpgBack in February a federal grand jury had indicted Salah Osman Ahmed, 26, of Brooklyn Park, and Abdifatah Yusuf Isse, of Seattle on charges of providing support to terrorists and conspiracy to "kill, kidnap, maim or injure" people in foreign countries.

Abdifatah Isse had plead guilty in exchange for lesser charges. It seems that Salah Ahmed is following in Isse's footsteps. According to the AP article, Ahmed could face between 5 to 15 years in prison. AP

MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota man who helped build a training camp for a group of Islamic militants in his homeland of Somalia told a federal judge Tuesday that he had attended secret meetings in Minneapolis before he went back to East Africa.

Salah Osman Ahmed, 26, pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to one count of providing material support to terrorists. Ahmed told U.S. District Judge James Rosenbaum he went to Somalia to fight Ethiopian soldiers but ended up working with al-Shabab, which the U.S. designated a terrorist organization in March 2008.

Could Ahmed had attended the "secret meetings" at the Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center, the largest mosque in Minneapolis? The imam of the mosque, Sheik Abdirahman Ahmed, was placed on the national no-fly list back in 2008. Even members of the Somali community have accused the imam and mosque of brainwashing these kids to go fight jihad in Somalia.

Sad: 2 of 3 Brit Hostages in Iraq "Likely Dead"

There were altogether five British hostages being held by Iranian backed Shia Islamists, but the bodies of two of the hostages were found last month. Now the British seem to think that two more of the three remaining hostages are dead.

We've already let one terrorist -- a Shia militiaman named Laith al-Khazali -- out of US custody in order to secure the release of these hostages and in return we've gotten 2 corpses and will likely get two more.

How is that policy of engaging terrorists and acquiescing to their demands going for ya there?

Two of three British hostages being held in Iraq are likely to have died in captivity, British media reported Wednesday....

The BBC reported that Britain's Foreign Office informed the families of two security guards that they "very likely" had died.

I pray that the intel the Brits have is wrong and that all three will be returned to their families.

Confirmed: Eighth Traitor on the Lam in Pakistan (UPDATED: Traitor ID'd)

Yesterday I noted that if your read the indictment against seven home grown jihadis in North Carolina carefully, that there was reference to an unnamed eighth American traitor who had left for Pakistan last October ... with no mention of returning to the US.

Today the it was confirmed that an eighth American connected to the cell was still at large, presumably now working with the Taliban, al Qaeda, or any number of other related violent Islamist groups:

Also Tuesday, the feds said an eighth member of the alleged network is still at large. That person is believed to be in Pakistan, according to a law enforcement official who wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the investigation...

U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding declined to discuss the alleged eighth suspect's whereabouts but said the public should not be worried.

"Federal authorities hope to have him apprehended shortly," Holding said. Holding wouldn't identify the person, and the defendant's name is redacted from court papers...

The indictment says the unnamed defendant is a U.S. citizen who went to Pakistan in October 2008 to "engage in violent jihad." It does not say whether the person returned to the United States. Holding declined to discuss the person's whereabouts but said the public should not be worried.

Who is this mystery traitor? I'm assuming that the Feds wouldn't have arrested the seven without having number 8 already in custody. As with Bryant Neal Vinas who was arrested last year but who's indictment was only unsealed last week, it might be awhile before we learn of his identity.

Irony: Google Takes Over Islamist YouTube

Google is taking over YouTubeIslam.com. They guys who run the website claim they aren't extremists. I've no idea. But I do know that this pisses off the extremists over at Islam Awakening.

Anything that pisses those assholes off makes baby Jesus smile.

Let me start at the beginning . . .

Can you imagine my shock when I opened up an email telling me our website domain name (YOUTUBEISLAM.COM) is being taken over by GOOGLE and their video site - YOUTUBE?
Here is more or less what we were told:

NOTICE: Effective August 5th, 2009 Google (owner of YouTube.com) will take over your domain name: YOUTUBEISLAM.COM.

Although we have purchased the name "YOUTUBEISLAM.COM" and have renewed for several years through GODADDY.COM it seems GOOGLE has enough influence to just simply take our domain name from us - and by the way, we have even paid for it all the way through to next year.

First, their lawyers contacted us saying they were going to take our domain because we copied their logo. We didn't even come close to their logo. (look for yourself www.YOUTUBEISLAM.com/images/logo.gif)

They next came up with saying our name was too similar to their name. We changed the name and the layout to read:

Yo Utu Beis Lam.com and we even registered that as a trade name.

We changed the logo and the images to reflect the new name.

They said they went into "arbitration" (of course we were not invited to that meeting) and then our registrar (GODADDY.COM) notified us they are "transferring" our domain name over to GOOGLE.

And why would Google want to take over the website?
Maybe they just don't like Islam?

Or possibily they don't like seeing so many new people entering Islam from our work

It's a plot against Islam!

Perhaps the J-O-Os are behind it? Bwahahahaaaaaa!!!

Taliban Trying to Win Hearts and Minds of Civilians. And then Kill them.

More rules of conduct from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan -- the Taliban -- entitled: The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Rules for Mujahideen.

We've seen this before. Three years ago when the Taliban issued a set of rules, one of which was a warning to the mujahideen to stop having sex with young boys. I. Kid. You. Not.

It didn't work then, it won't work now.

The al Jazeera report keeps using phrases like "it is now clear" or "clear guidelines". One of the guidelines "made clear" is that hostages are not to be exchanged for money. Of course, this same "guideline" was given to Talib fighters 3 years ago. In the meantime, dozens -- if not more -- of hostages have, in fact, been exchanged for money.

As with buggering young boys, don't expect Mullah Omar's directives to be taken seriously. By anyone.

Except al Jazeera.

If any one has a translated set of these "guidelines" please let me know. I'd be interested to learn just what things al Jazeera conveniently left out of the report.

Massachusetts Border Cam Catches Sales Tax Avoiders

(Concord, New Hampshire) After New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signed a bill mandating that the state not release information on customers traveling from Massachusetts to shop in his state, a flood of Bay Staters crowded highways for New Hampshire's no-sales-tax stores. And, all the bargain-hunters are now caught on a live-feed webcam.

A Massachusetts Republican gubernatorial candidate is tracking shoppers to see if New Hampshire businesses are taking Bay State sales tax dollars.

Republican Christy Mihos has set up a camera that links to his Web site a streaming video of every car crossing the state border into Salem's Route 28 retail strip where shoppers pay no sales tax. This brings attention to the Massachusetts sales tax that on Aug. 1 will increase by 25 percent, from 5 percent to 6.25 percent.

Naturally, the disparity in tax rates between adjacent states will boost the economy in New Hampshire while stunting growth in Massachusetts.

Young Boys Rescued From The Cowardly Taliban

Sending children to do their splodey work.

Taragana - ISLAMABAD — Security forces have rescued several children forcibly recruited by the Taliban, allegedly to be used as fighters or suicide bombers, and there could be hundreds more of them, officials said Tuesday....

Lt. Gen. Nadeem Ahmed, who heads a special support group tasked with handling the return of people displaced by three months of fighting in the Swat Valley and surrounding areas, said he had met with nine boys rescued from the Taliban.

“What we are saying is that they are Taliban recruits. They are trained. They could have been used for any purpose,” Shahid told The Associated Press.

Ahmed said on state-run TV that the children had told him there were many more, possibly hundreds, like them.

“It seems that there are some 300 to 400 such children who the Taliban had taken forcibly or who they were training,” Ahmed said.

Maj. Nasir Ali, spokesman for forces in Swat, told AP that most of the several children who had been rescued were taken from a Taliban training camp in Swat after a firefight, although some had turned themselves in later. He did not say when the rescue occurred.

“The account we are getting from these boys is that there could be many more such cases, and we believe that most of them have dispersed among the public,” he said. “We have appealed, and we are appealing again and again to people, to parents that if they know any of such case, they should contact us. We promise that we will do our best to rehabilitate them.”

Ahmed said that a psychiatrist would examine the children to recommend how they should be reintegrated into society.

“It will be a big challenge” to reverse the indoctrination they received, he noted.

He said the boys had sometimes been lured by offers of food, but that they had been underfed and some had fallen ill.

Militant spokesmen could not be reached Tuesday for comment on the allegations.

Noted Trig Birther Upset Over Anti-Birther Bill Block

After spending much time 'just asking questions' about the circumstances of Sarah Palin's youngest child Trig's birth, Andrew Sullivan is now upset that one single Republican blocked a vote which included an anti-birther clause.

Sullie's writing is always incredibly unclear, but much of the post seems to be devoted to the notion that leading conservative voices are also birthers. He notes:

Yep, the other face of the GOP - after Coulter, Limbaugh, Malkin, Cheney and Inhofe - just blocked a resolution affirming the birthplace of Obama.
Did I read that right? Does Andrew Sullivan really think that Michelle Malkin and Rush Limbaugh are birthers?

That would be news to me if true. In fact, I've never once heard either of these two say anything that comes close to birthirism. I'm on a listserve with Michelle, and whenever a birther raises their ugly head and I and others shout them down, I've never once heard Michelle offer any support for the birther position.

I don't listen to Limbaugh the entire 15 hours a week he's on the air, but I've never once heard him even 'raise questions' about Obama's birthplace.

Sullivan, on the other hand, is a noted Trig Truther.

Also a problem? The guilt-by-association argument he uses to bring Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin, etc. into the birther nuthouse (ie, one Republican blocked the anti-birther vote. That one Republican must be a birther. What else could explain the procedural blocking? Malkin, etc are Republicans. Therefore Republicans are birthers) is complete nonsense.

Go to Think Progress, his source for the deranged accusation, and watch the video. From that you come to the conclusion that birtherism is rampant in leading Republican circles?

You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding.

Also a problem for the Think Progress / Andrew Sullivan argument: Bachman, the woman seen in the video, ended up voting yes on the anti-birther bill.

In fact, as a spokeswoman for Bachmann told Salon -- and C-SPAN video of the congresswoman's remarks on the House floor confirmed -- Bachmann supports the resolution.

After the postponement, on Monday evening the resolution passed -- unanimously. Bachmann was one of the "yea" votes.

When I applied for my US passport I didn't produce an original birth certificate. I produced a "certificate of live birth". Exactly what Obama has produced. That's what many states give you when you ask them for a copy of your birth certificate.

So, Barack's parents -- knowing that someday in the far off future the young chosen one would need to run for President -- called in to not one, but two separate newspapers to announce the birth of a child?

Muslim Woman Gets Caning for Drinking Beer

Women's rights activists and members of the public have expressed outrage, however, Islamic lawyers say she will be whipped with a thin cane which "does not cause severe pain."

Heh. So it came to pass that under Islam, lawyers tell patients how much pain they feel.

Alternatively, in the U.S. we expect patients to tell doctors how much pain they feel. Of course, if hopey-changey health care becomes effective in the U.S., bureaucrats will tell patients how much pain they feel.

7 Traitors Arrested in N.C. for Jihad Plans

Traitors falling out all over the place this week. First, it was revealed that a veteran named Bryant Neal Vinas had been held since late last year as a member of al Qaeda. And now seven more?

One of the men -- Hysen Sherifi from Kosovo -- arrested in the cell is here as a permanent resident, so technically only six of the men are American citizens and therefore traitors.

The ringleader? It seems to be Daniel Boyd. What a surprising name, eh?

The original indictments are in the link below. Click on them and notice something, er, unusual? Save for Daniel "Saifullah" Boyd's indictment, there's nothing in them. Other than a reference to the FISA court.

All the juicy details are in Boyd's indictment.

Daniel Boyd appears to be a veteran of the Afghan campaign against the Soviets. In recent years he brought his son to Israel with hopes of crossing the border into the Palestinian territories in order to teach Jr. about jihad.

The family that jihads together stays together, or so I'm told.

The kicker? If I'm reading the indictment right the Israelis turned him away at the airport.

Call it "profiling". The kind that works.

(Update: Aaron looked at the dates a little closer. It seems that they were in Israel a month and couldn't cross the border. )
Another interesting note (see 12c) is that the indictment actually cites the radicalization of younger Muslims into the doctrine of "fard ayn" -- that violent jihad is a personal obligation for Muslims. This is the first time I recall teaching violent jihad as a criminal act.

One other very interesting thing: one of those indicted appears to be unnamed.

For instance, here's a line from the indictment at #3:

On or about October 7, 2008, defendent [blank in the original] departed the United States to travel to Pakistan to engage in violent jihad.
That's it. No statement that this unknown defendant returned from Pakistan.

So, seven traitors down and one still on the loose?

Officials arrested seven residents of North Carolina Monday on charges they supported terrorism by recruiting people to fight overseas.

But read through the indictment against Saifullah. It seems he's been on the jihad bandwagon for a very long time. He attended the jihad camps way back in 1992.

Daniel Patrick Boyd, 39, Hysen Sherifi, 24, Anes Subasic, 33, Zakariya Boyd, 20, Dylan Boyd, 22, Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, 22, and Ziyad Yaghi, 21, have been charged with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists and conspiring to murder, kidnap and injure persons abroad, the justice department announced Monday....

Authorities surrounded Daniel Boyd’s home at 134 Lakeside Circle in Willow Spring Monday afternoon, according to someone close to the investigation....

The defendants were arrested at various locations Monday morning by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies...

Each of the defendants faces potential life imprisonment if convicted of conspiracy to murder, kidnap and injure people abroad. In addition, conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists carries a maximum 15 year sentence.

So, why the unsealing of so many indictments against homegrown jihadis lately? Part of Obama's promise to criminalize the war on terror? Coincidence? Something else?

To make the coincidences even more, er, coincidental -- yet another homegrown jihadi Ahmed Omar Abu Ali from Falls Church, Virginia -- was re-sentenced today.

No, not the bad kind of re-sentencing. The good kind. You know, where the judges gave him more time behind bars ruling that his earlier sentence was not harsh enough.

Somebody buy those judges a beer!

Is Nigeria the Next Somalia?

The Taliban in ..... Nigeria? Wow, I thought the fact that half of Nigeria was Muslim would insulate that country from evil groups like the Taliban. You know, since Islam is all about the love, peace, and harmony.

And just like the Afghan and Somali Taliban before them, this "Taliban" group has direct ties to al Qaeda and their propaganda machine.

I'm reading conflicting reports saying that the death toll is between a couple dozen all the way up to 150. The police say most of those killed are Taliban. The truth? Who knows.

Apparently they've been around since 2004. This weekend's attacks were apparently in response to the arrest of several bombmakers last week.

This is pretty troubling when combined with information I received from Chris over at Islam in Action that Nigerians were being spammed with emails directing them to view the recent release of a video from al Qaeda's Somali affiliate of an American inciting Muslims to jihad.

We know that recruitment of Americans to Somalia began years ago but that this was on no one's radar screen until last year --- after it was too late. One has to wonder the extent to which Islamists in Nigeria are reaching out to the diaspora in Europe, Canada, and the US? Not only on the recruiting front, but I'd be more concerned about how the diaspora is often tapped in fund raising efforts.

I hope somebody is watching this.

Good News: US Releasing Senior Iranian Terrorists

For awhile it seemed clear to every one that Iran had a big hand in training and arming the Iraqi terrorists "resistance". Not only were Iranian made ordinance being used for shaped IEDs, but Iranian agents were caught in Iraq on a number of occasions with members of the so-called "resistance".

And not just Shia groups. They also worked with Sunni groups out to oust the Great Satan and the popularly elected government of Iraq their "collaborators".

The Obama administration bumped US assistance to over 100 million in economic and military aid in 2010, but donors pledged $4.6 billion to Yemen in 2006 and it didn't help. Muslim Mob Attacks Newspaper Offices

(Gulbarga, India) Yesterday, a mob of angry Muslims attacked and ransacked the offices of Samyukta Karnataka daily newspaper, injuring three employees. The circulation manager, Vilas Deshpande (pic), suffered a significant head wound and is hospitalized in serious condition.

The Muslims reportedly were protesting because the newspaper "had published indecent allegations and used vulgar words" against a local Islamic leader known as Shaik-e-Deccan. The allegations published concerned some "undesirable activities" identified in a memo to the police.

Executive Editor of the newspaper Srikantacharya Mannur, who was an eyewitness to the incident, said that about 15 persons shouting slogans against the newspapers started assaulting the staff in the front office where the circulation and advertisement departments functioned.
Muslims also demonstrated at the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a letter demanding the newspaper be closed down since their religious sentiments had been hurt. In opposition, the journalists' union demonstrated with a demand that newspapers and journalists be protected.

Gulbarga is a city in southern India between Hyderabad and Mumbai with a population of approximately 500,000.

The short answer is Skip Gates acted like an asshole. He was uncooperative, he was talking shit. He was wasting the officer's time.

Just a little humility and a few "yes sir"s and it would have been a non issue.

And yes I always call the officer sir and/or ma'am and I'm a redneck. Try it, you might be surprised how much easier that makes the process.

To be fair, I've done it before. With the predicted result. So I learned this the hard way and so did Skip Gates.

Turkey Arrests 200 Hizb ut-Tahrir Members

Turkish police detained nearly 200 suspected members of the outlawed Islamic organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir in simultaneous raids in 23 provinces across Turkey, the state-run news agency Anatolian said on Friday.

In Friday's operation police said they confiscated a number of documents linking the suspects to the Islamist group.

Hizb ut-Tahrir seeks to unite Muslims into a pan-Islamic state but says its means are peaceful.

Witnesses said the naked girls in Bihar state plowed the fields and chanted ancient hymns after sunset to invoke the gods. They said elderly village women helped the girls drag the plows.

Yemeni Police Massacre Protesters- 16 Killed

In the largest single death toll to date, 16 southern protesters were killed in Zanzibar Abyan when police opened fire on thousands of demonstrators. Numerous reports indicated that the wounded were left on the streets with police shooting at those who tried to retrieve them. Dozens of others were treated at hospitals.

Telephone service has been cut and the province is surrounded by military forces, preventing any transit to the region. Since April, 38 people have been killed by security forces during protests and nearly a hundred have died since protests began in 2007. The protests began as demands for equal rights denied southern Yemenis after the 1990 unity of north and south. Southerners say the unified Yemeni state is illegal under international law. The protesters currently are calling for an independent state.

Thousands were arrested earlier in the month in an effort to disrupt a scheduled protest in Aden. Southern representatives claim more than six thousand are incarcerated. With the jails overflowing capacity, some prisoners are being held in military camps and others in shipping containers. Shocka! Former al-Qaeda Recruiter is Raaaycyst Against Whites

Hassan Butt is said to have yelled 'white redneck hooligans' at officers who arrested his brother over claims that he became aggressive during an argument over parking.

Florida Company Shilling for Canadian Taliban Supporters (sticky)

Of all of the unofficial websites devoted to spreading Taliban propaganda, TheUnjustMedia.com has long held the distinction of a) being the most directly connected to the internationally outlawed organization; b) being the most vile. Let me address these two issues in order.

First, of all the English language "unofficial" Taliban support websites I know of, this one seems to be the most directly connected to the actual Taliban. Like other unofficial websites, The Unjust Media posts official communiques from the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan". However, even when the official Taliban websites are down TheUnjustMedia continues to supply daily reports from our terrorist foes.

This suggests that the administrators of the website are in direct communication with the Taliban.

Because of this, many Islamist forums do not rely communiques from the Taliban on their official website -- which are often down due to our own efforts. Instead, they attribute the source of Taliban information to The Unjust Media.

Second, it is one of the most vile. Not that all Taliban support websites aren't vile, they are. But because it is so well polished in its weaving together a unified narrative of antisemetism, holocaust denial, and pro-terrorism. It's just good.

It started out with holocaust denial, but today focuses on the imagined relationship between world Jewry and the Zionist plot to control Muslim lands. Internationally recognized terrorist groups like the Taliban are presented as "freedom fighters" against this global plot.

Even though the site currently masks who is behind its operation, we know that it is operated out of Canada. The original version of the website was quite upfront as to its Canadian origins.

I'm not in favor of the Canadian Star Chambers that are the Human Rights Commissions, but instead of wasting their time hauling in patriotic Canadians for writing about the threat of radical Islam, maybe they could spend their time more wisely? Like hauling in Khurram Siddiqui (If that is his real name) for his overt support of the Taliban? Or maybe about his vile antisemitic writings?

The last time I checked Canada was still at war with the Taliban.

Town Manager Fired for Marriage to MILF Porn Star

The gist of it being that the guy was fired because his wife, Jazella Moore (pictured right), is a MILF pornstar. No really. Apparently she has starred in a number of MILF related videos, including "MILF Mania 3".

The city fathers of Fort Myers Beach, for their part, said he wasn't fired because of his wife's activities. No, he was fired because of all the hullabaloo that his wife's porn career was causing.

Too much distraction from the public outcry and what not. The distraction being caused by porn.

So, are MILF porn stars a protected class? And if so, does town manager Scott Janke have grounds for a lawsuit here?

Man Insults Islam with Predictable Results

And by "insulting Islam" they mean "boinking a married woman".

A married Muslim woman has been warned by police that she could be murdered after her lover was attacked with sulphuric acid.

The 24-year-old Muslim man had the acid poured down his throat and was stabbed and beaten with bricks by four men.

He is not expected to live after suffering 90 per cent burns in the London attack, which blinded him and left his tongue destroyed.

The Danish victim, who is of Asian origin, is said to have ‘insulted’ her strictly religious relatives, which includes women who wear the hijab.

Seven have been arrested.

Internet Key in Vets Treason UPDATE: Key in Arrest!

Not only is Bryant Neal Vinas a traitor, but he is also a veteran. So how does one go from a patriotic member of the armed services of the United States to joining al Qaeda and becoming a traitor?

Step 1: convert to Islam. Step 2: start hanging out at Islamist forums on the internet.

I'm sure there are other steps in the process, but today let's opt for brevity over precision.

Mr. Vinas worshiped at a mosque on Long Island, where he worked briefly as a truck driver and in a car wash, according to officials, one of whom said he had been largely “self-radicalized.” This official said that Mr. Vinas had met some people at the mosque, the Islamic Association of Long Island, but largely turned toward jihad on the Internet.

And look who used to go to Masjid with Vinas: Mujahideen Ryder. Perhaps MR could tell us if this is a picture of Bryant Neal Vinas?

Again, it looks like Vinas was on the forums before he left for Pakistan. He may have went by the handles "Ibrahim," "Bashir al-Ameriki" (alt: Bashir al-Amreeki; al-Amereki) or "Ben Yameen al-Kanadee" (alt: bin Yamin al-Kanadi). If any one ran across Vinas using these or other handles on the forums, let me know. I'd be interested to know what he was posting before he left.

He seems to have trained in the al Qaeda camps with several Europeans connected to Malika El Aroud's Minbar SOS forum, so that may be somewhere to start.

Four Dead In Suspected Honor Killing in Canada [UPDATE: Honor Killings Mounting in GWN]

Dan Riehl is following the story:

Three teenage girls and their mother. Allegedly, a man took two wives while living in Afghanistan but could only claim one as he's now living in Canada. Reportedly, he has seven children with his other wife. The woman reported receiving death threats and fearing for her life in emails to relatives. The car was found submerged with the women inside. Individuals who knew them and some family members are insisting it was an honor killing.

Biden: Gitmo Closes by January

In an interview with the BBC, Vice President Joe Biden said that the Guantanamo Bay detention camp will close by next January and decisions on individual inmates will be completed well before January.

Unfortunately, Biden's remarks are somewhat inconsistent with a statement made Monday by senior administration officials which indicated that a task force "would need another six months to complete a report" on closing Guantanamo.

Bin Laden Son reported killed in Pakistan

This report warmed my heart. My only hope is this asswipe died a worse death than one of those innocents forced to jump from one of the Twin Towers on the morning of 9/11.

U.S. officials believe Saad bin Laden — a son of Osama bin Laden — has been killed by an American missile in Pakistan.

Saad bin Laden reportedly spent years under house arrest in Iran before traveling last year to Pakistan, according to former National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell.

It's believed he was killed by Hellfire missiles fired from a U.S. Predator drone sometime this year.

A senior U.S. counterterrorism official tells NPR that without a body to conduct DNA tests on, it's hard to be completely sure. But he characterized U.S. spy agencies as being "80 to 85 percent" certain that Saad bin Laden is dead.

85% works for me.

We will get everyone of the bastards who visited such horror on our nation on Sept 11,2001.

American al Qaeda Member Arrested in Pakistan [Updated]

A 26 year old Muslim convert from Long Island New York has been arrested in Pakistan and has been indicted on a number of terrorism related charges. Missing from the indictment? Treason.

CNN:

Bryant Neal Vinas fired rockets at the military base along with others during a September 2008 attack, according to a federal indictment returned Wednesday....

In addition, prosecutors allege that Vinas provided al Qaeda with information about the New York transit system and the Long Island Railroad.

Vinas is charged with conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals, providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and receiving military-type training from a foreign terrorist organization....

NY News adds that Vinas is from Patchogue, NY.

The New York Times notes that Vinas was recruited by noted Belgian online jihadi Malika El Aroud. Which means that before he joined al Qaeda, he must have spent at least some time chatting it up with the "brothers" in the al-Minbar or other online forums.

Al Minbar was a French language forum. I'm guessing he's an English speaker. Which means he probably has left online tracks at other forums.

No relationship between online jihad and real world terrorists my ass.....

Has anybody seen the indictment which says Vinas went by the names "Ibrahim," "Bashir al-Ameriki" and "Ben Yameen al-Kandee"?

Okay, there are three specific charges against him.

1a - He and others attempted a rocket attack against a U.S. base in Afghanistan.

1b - He and others fired rockets at a U.S. base in Afghanistan.

[I guess the distinction being attempted attack vs actual attack?]

2 - Provided material support to al Qaeda by giving them information on the place where he formerly worked, the Long Island Railway.

3 - Received military training from al Qaeda.

Wow. Again, I ask, don't all of the above point to treason? The man is clearly a traitor, and should be treated as such!

After he was captured in November he provided investigators with critical information about a plot to blow up the subway systems, a law enforcement official said.

Based on his disclosures, Washington warned city officials around Thanksgiving that al Qaeda had discussed terror attacks on the city subways and other transit systems in September.

Vinas -- who also used the names "Ibrahim," "Bashir al-Ameriki" (Bashir the American) and "Ben Yameen al-Kanadee -- has been cooperating with investigators, both American and European, since his arrest.

Perhaps he's been spared the treason charge -- which carries the death penalty -- because of his cooperation?

Public records indicate lived with his father Juan Vinas in Patchogue, and was a registered Democrat who voted in local elections in 2005.
But I'm sure he voted Bush!

Vinas' father told the Los Angeles Times that his son began spending time at the Islamic Association of Long Island in nearby Selden. His son vanished, Juan Vinas, in September 2007.
So, he left two years ago. Anybody remember seeing this guy hanging around the Minbar SOS forum at that time?

More Non-Muslim Brits Heart Sharia Courts

Taragana - LONDON - An increasing number of non-Muslims are turning to Sharia courts to resolve commercial disputes and other civil matters.

A report in The Times has quoted the Muslim Arbitration Tribunal (MAT) as saying that five per cent of its cases involved non-Muslims who were using the courts because they were less cumbersome and more informal than the English legal system.....

Anti-Sharia campaigners, who claim that the Islamic system is radical and biased against women, expressed alarm at the news.

Denis MacEoin, who wrote a recent report for the think-tank Civitas examining the spread of Sharia in Britain, said: “You really need to ask why. What advantages could that possibly have for them going to an Islamic court? Any [Sharia] court is going to be implementing aspects of a law that runs contrary to British law, because of the way it treats women for example.”

Noted NY Terror Supporter Harassing Family of American Hostage

The New York Taliban and Osama bin Laden supporter formerly known as Joseph Cohen, Yousef al-Khattab, claims he has called the family of American hostage Bowe Bergdahl.

Thank God that the Bergdahl family didn't answer the phone, or they might have heard Yousef claiming that their son -- who the Taliban are threatening to murder -- is a "colonial occupier" fighting for the Zionists in Israel.

Here's what Kattab says over at Islamic Awakening:

The Taliban Mujihadeen have captured a American (USA) colonialist occupier, and USAF Ret. Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski had stated HERE that "The Operation in Afghanistan is rooted in Israel". This motivated me to call PFC. Bowe Bargdahl's family who did not pick up the phone. The next best person I tried to contact was Sheriff Walt Femling & was kindly given the oppurtunity to leave my questions for him on his voice mail.
Unable to reach the Bergdahl famlily, Khattab calls the Sherrif's office. He's posted a YouTube video of the phone call here. The visual message overlaid on the phone call is an apparent attempt to equivocate between US treatment of terrorist prisoners with the treatment the Taliban are giving to Pfc. Bergdahl. No mention of the fact that the Taliban murder their prisoners.

The Sheriff is not available to take the call as he's preparing for a press conference, but Khattab leaves a voice mail. In it, he identifies himself and says that he is calling the Sheriff's office because the Bergdahl's are not answering the phone and that the Sheriff is the closest person to the family that he knows of.

He quotes the retired Air Force colonel mentioned above linking Afghanistan to some grand Zionist conspiracy. He then asks the Sheriff three questions "about what the people in Idaho might think".

First, he asks the Sheriff if he looks at Bow Bergdahl "as a hero or as a colonist occupier of a sovereign nation".

Second, "What is your opinion now of the American Jewish population who Bow is facing a possible execution for furthering their interests."

Third, "Do you feel at ease knowing that Islam forbids torture. So we know that Bow will not be raped or waterboarded like the American terrorist regime in Abu Ghraib, Gitmo, or the secret detention centers wherever they may be."

Remember, this is a man who mocked Daniel Pearl and claimed he was glad Pearl had been murdered. He even prayed that the Taliban would murder a group of Korean hostages they were holding for the alleged crime of preaching Christianity.

Can you imagine the trauma of having a Taliban supporter call you while your son's life hangs in the balance at the whim of the Taliban?

His intention was apparently to ask these same questions to the Bergdahl family that he asked of the Sheriff. If that isn't an attempt to traumatize further an already traumatized family, I don't know what is.

Khattab is a traitor, a scumbag, and an all around piece of excrement. He lives and works in New York City.

Michael Yon the on the Positive Value of Propaganda

Michael Yon has one of his photos from Afghanistan of a man reading a military produced paper captioned this way:

Lithuanian and Croatian soldiers spent three hours walking around handing out 'propaganda.' In American patois, 'propaganda' has a negative connotation but it’s important for the military to disseminate its message. This man squatted for about 10 minutes reading (his lips were moving). One boy ran up to me to say in English that his photo had been in another such flier. He was very proud to have his photo published, and whereas I’ve seen people disregard such fliers in some places, here the people seemed to value them. One man zoomed in with a child on a motorbike and smiled, asking for a flier, which he then started to read. Whoever is making these fliers seems to be doing a good job.

Documentary: "We Are Half Of Irans Population"

This amazing film, produced by Iranian director Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, has documented how a wide coalition of women was formed in Iran, prior to the June 2009 presidential elections, in order to make their demands heard and to effectively influence the candidates. Among the the demands of the women was for Iran to join the U.N.'s Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

This documentary was prepared without taking sides in the elections. And once it had been completed, the four presidential candidates were invited to attend a special screening. All but Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accepted the invitation. The other other candidates, Mehdi Karrubi, Mir Hossein Mousavi, and Mohsen Rezaei, attended the screening along with their wives.

Young Men Living with Mommy and Daddy

(London, England) In a study of 8,000 men and women, researchers at the University of London have found that 20-something men who still live with their parents are prone to persistent violent behavior. It seems that delayed independence is at the core of irresponsibility. Having known a few individuals in this category, I tend to agree.

These young men, who are not paying rent or a mortgage or supporting dependants, have more leisure time and disposable income – which may spell trouble. They were more likely to get into bar fights with strangers than their more independent peers.
A key element is the fact that men aged 20 to 24 are no longer influenced by parents to conform to reasonable standards of behavior. It's easy to surmise that Islamists rely upon the delayed-independence 20-something crowd as a source of jihad recruits. (More)

Aussie & Afghan Troops Turn Sr Taliban Commander Into Pig Feed

Nothing like dead Taliban to put a smile on ones face.

The Chief of the Australian Defence Force says a senior Taliban insurgent commander was killed recently in Afghanistan's Oruzgan province by Afghan and Australian special forces.

Air Chief Marshal Houston says the dead Taliban leader, Mullah Amanullah Akhund, had been directly responsible for attacks on Australian and Afghan soldiers, especially through the use of improvised explosive devices.

The chief of Defence Force joint operations, Lieutenant-General Mark Evans, said that following the completion of a recent special forces operation, it could be announced that the Taliban leader had been killed after a combined Australian-Afghan National Army patrol was fired on by insurgents.

''Akhund was one of three men killed when the patrol returned fire,'' General Evans said.

Obama Motors Sales Fall 22%

Exhibit A in government's ability to "run" a business:

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors posted Wednesday a 22 percent global sales drop from a year earlier for the first six months of 2009 amid the economic slowdown and the automaker's slide into bankruptcy.

GM said its global first-half sales, which include brands the automaker is trimming from its lineup, fell 21.8 percent to 3.55 million vehicles. The automaker's sales in the second quarter fell 15.4 percent to 1.94 million vehicles.

We do not choose to fight all websites used by terrorists and their supporters, nor do we discount claims that such sites can serve a useful intelligence function. We, in fact, believe these concerns to be well founded. While we cannot publicly describe the specifics of our target selection process we can state generically that websites such as the ones listed below have little intel value but do a great deal in helping spread enemy propaganda.

Further, we have known about these official Taliban websites for months. In the case of the unofficial website, for years. The targets were not chosen on a whim and have been observed for some time now. It's time for them to go.

Yes, we know that they will probably pop up again in a few weeks, but so what? Kill one terrorist and another will take his place. That fact should not stop us from killing them. Because training a new terrorist takes time and resources and one never knows what this particular terrorist will do in the future. So too with setting up a new website. It takes time. It takes resources. And one never knows the extent to which propaganda will influence the next potential jihadi to become an actual jihadi.

The majority of us cannot kill a member of the Taliban, but you can play a small part in disrupting their propaganda operations.

This is Shahamat.org. It is one of several official websites run by the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" -- what the Taliban called Afghanistan when they were running it and the name they continue to use to make themselves seem like a shadow government. You will notice the Taliban's logo in the middle of the above screen capture. It is the same logo that appears on the Taliban video showing American hostage Bowe Bergdahl.

This particular website is affiliated with Mufti Abu Yasir (مفتي ابو یاسر ), the head of the Taliban's "information wing".

However, evidence found on the website suggests that it was designed and is administered by Taliban webmaster Adil Watanmal, from Pakistan.

Unlike previous Taliban websites, this one features a "private area". It's almost as if the Taliban had something to hide. I wonder what that could be?

Who is hosting the Taliban?

76.74.186.4 = Canadianwebhosting.com, but the information is physically being hosted by Peer 1 Network on the second floor of 75 Broad Street in New York, NY. That's right, the Taliban are being facilitated within spitting distance of Ground Zero.

In all likelihood the Canadian internet service which sold the space and is providing DNS service to the Taliban, nor the American company which is hosting it for them knows that they are facilitating and internationally recognized terrorist organization. These type of internet webhosting accounts are usually automated. But you'd think that it would not be too difficult to take a second look at websites registered from Karachi, Pakistan?

Bonus: email the Taliban (REALLY). Say whatever you want. Give them a piece of your mind. I really don't care what you say to them. No words could ever be as vile as their deeds.

This is www.alemarah1.org/, "The Voice of Jihad", the oldest of the Taliban's official websites. We've battled this one so many times -- and won -- that I've literally stopped counting. Adil Watanmal also once used the website to spread a computer virus. Sorry Adil, it didn't work.

The website is affiliated with two Taliban spokesmen, Zabihullah Mujahid and Qari Youssef Muhammad Ahmadi.

The website's registration info is masked by the Dutch company PrivacyPost, used most often by pornographers. But we know who is behind the website, the Taliban. There is no covering it up. They say so right on the front page of the website.

And if you don't believe me, just check out the banner flying at the English link.

Update II by Howie: I've used our prior posts on Taliban websites to collect up the various US laws, executive orders and UN sanctions and designations that will give your complaint a basis to stand upon. You can take the letter word for word or you can use the information below the fold to construct your own.

The main thing is that we all write as many polite business like complaints as possible. If that doesn't work well I have a few more tricks up my sleeve that I save for the stubborn ones. But please take the time to write your complaint. Rusty and I can sometimes get these things ourselves, but the volume of complaints can be critical.

Your emails are the most important factor if we are to be successful in this effort.

You are violating United States and International law by providing business services to "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan", better know as the Taliban.

The Taliban were declared specially designated terrorist entity by President Bush under executive order 13224, see here via Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Asset Control.

The Executive order recognizes the designation of the Taliban as terrorists by the UN resolution 1267 and directs the Dept of Treasury and State to treat them as such.

You can find more security council resolutions about the Taliban here on that mysterious thingy called Google.

Providing business services, even free ones, to the Taliban violates the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Each IEEPA violation of carries a fine of up to $250,000.

The following U.N. Security Council Resolutions prohibit any individual or company from doing any business with the Taliban: 1267 (1999), 1333 (2000), 1390 (2002), 1455 (2003), 1526 (2004), 1617 (2005), 1735 (2006) and 1822 (2008). Specifically, the resolutions order member countries to "freeze without delay the funds and other financial assets or economic resources, including funds derived from property owned or controlled directly or indirectly" of the Taliban. The Netherlands and Malaysia also have domestic laws implementing the above UN Resolutions.

Please archive all data relevant to the site, report that data to the proper authorities and remove the sites ASAP.

Rep. Keith Ellison wants Minneapolis Somalis fighting for al Qaida linked al Shabaab to return to the US

Rep. Keith Ellison wants to bring home the remaining Minneapolis Somalis who left to wage jihad in Somalia. After all, they're just naive youngsters who were tricked into going to Somalia to wage jihad for al Shabaab. Minnesota Public Radio

St. Paul, Minn. — Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison said the U.S. government is trying to ensure the safe return of some of the young Somali-American men believed to be fighting with a terrorist group in their homeland.[...]

At least four Somali-American men from Minnesota who left to fight in the Horn of Africa have died there in recent months.

What the article fails to mention is that one of the men, Shirwa Ahmed, was a suicide bomber. According to the FBI, he was radicalized at the Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center the largest mosque in Minneapolis.
Congressman Keith Ellison thinks the U.S. should try to retrieve the Minnesotan men who may have been misled into joining Al-Shabaab and want out.

"We can't have a knee-jerk emotional reaction," Ellison said. "We've got to have an intelligent reaction. If a young person says, 'I have been lied to. I don't like these people. I want to get away from them,' we should help them do that, as long as we know that does not create a public safety issue for Minnesotans and Americans."[...]

"If you've learned the truth about these exploitative organizations like Shabaab, who are so dangerous, then abandon them and then help tell the truth about what these groups are really all about," Ellison said.

We don't need people who fought for al Shabaab to tell us about the terror group. We at RoA have been warning about al Shabaab ever since we started this blog.
at least two men with Minnesota ties were able to escape Al-Shabaab, back in December 2007.

Court records released this week say Abdifatah Isse left for Somalia in hopes of fighting against the Ethiopian troops who invaded the country. According to the documents, only after Isse arrived in Somalia, he realized he joined a movement connected to Al-Shabaab. At the time, the U.S. had yet to declare Al-Shabaab as a terrorist group. Isse and another Minnesota man were able to flee Al-Shabaab soon after arriving.

A friend identified the other man as 26-year-old Salah Ahmed of New Brighton. The friend said Ahmed told the other Minnesota fighters that he needed to seek treatment for his allergies. Then Ahmed and Isse escaped to Kismayo, and eventually returned to the United States.

Again, the article fails to mention that Isse has pleaded guilty to "[providing] material support and resources, namely personnel, including themselves, knowing and intending that the material support and resources were to be used in preparation for and to carry out a conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim or injure persons in a foreign country". He trained with al Shabaab and helped build a terror camp.
These people are trained, perhaps over there. They become radicalized over there," Radsan said. "They are engaged in combat, and if those people can be put on that cycle, it's only another step before they might come back here to do bad things in the Twin Cities."
The men are 'radicalized' here in the heartland of the USA. That's why they left to wage jihad in Somalia.

Was Bergdahl a Deserter? Back to the Rape Analogy

Was the reason that Pvt. Bowe Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban because he was a deserter?

Short answer: I don't care.

Long answer: I don't care, he's an American (one of us) and the Taliban are our enemies in a hot war. They have one of our soldiers.

Even if the Taliban took Michael Moore hostage I'd have a similar response.

Michael Moore is a douche, but he's our douche.

No person deserves the fate of a hostage in the hands of the Taliban. I'm told by a friend that Islamists are having a field day over at a certain well known forum contrasting how well Bergdahl is being treated by the Taliban with how poorly the US treats its POWs captured in the War on Terror.

If you think they make a good point, you are a moral idiot.

I cannot say how well Bergdahl is being treated by the Taliban. Let us assume it's three squares a day and conjugal visits. So what? At the end of the day he will probably be murdered.

Not executed. Not killed. Murdered.

Bergdahl committed no crime. He was a soldier in war. He is not a POW. He is a hostage.

Whatever crimes he is accused of committing by the Taliban are fabrications. Crimes against Islam are no crimes at all. They are sins.

If you believe people should be killed for sinning then perhaps you would feel more comfortable living in Saudi Arabia or Iran?

As for the desertion claim that some are writing in to Michelle Malkin about, I have no idea. Passing along rumors as fact is a popular past time among soldiers of all stripes.

I think, perhaps, we may be confusing the term desertion with AWOL (Absent Without Leave).

Very few soldiers desert, but thousands of them go AWOL every year. The key difference being that a deserter leaves and intends never to return. Someone who goes AWOL simply leaves, but with the intention of coming back. Usually because there is some fun to be had. Say, with one of the local girls? Generally you don't get permission from your commanding officer to visit the local red light district. Especially in Afghanistan.

Most AWOL cases are simply errors of judgment. You can't put tens of thousands of college age men anywhere on Earth and not expect lapses of judgment.

The surprising thing is so few major lapses in personal judgment happen. There is something about the training and culture of the U.S. armed services that takes a group of otherwise irresponsible youth and molds the majority of them into men.

Desertion, itself, may also be a lapse of judgment. If there is any veracity to the rumor that Bergdahl wanted to go "to the mountains to find himself" then clearly the young man was not in his right mind. Nobody goes to the Hindu Kush to find themselves. There aren't any Buddhist monasteries there with wise yet surprising witty monks -- with hot daughters -- guarding sacred knives.

Someone deserting in Afghanistan is unclear on the concept.

So, let's reserve judgment on Bergdahl for now. He's an American soldier being held hostage by our enemies in a hot war.

Let's not make him a target for our frustrations when our anger should be reserved for the Taliban. He is a victim.

As I've said over and over through the years, hostages often exercise extremely poor judgment and put themselves in situations which lead to their captivity.

But so do rape victims. Putting yourself in a bad situation does not morally excuse the monsters who would take advantage of your poor judgment. The person who is raped is a victim plain and simple.

In the case of hostages it is even more troubling than after the fact analysis of other crimes where the victim exercised poor judgment. That we are talking about Bergdahl's role in his own victimization while that victimization continues seems pretty bad to me. I don't know what to call it. Call it bad manners.

It's one thing to say Jodie Foster really should have worn panties and not been so flirty well after the fact, but it's another thing altogether to sit in the bar corner and tisk-tisk her for being so slutty while the rape is happening.

Bergdahl is being victimized right now. The Taliban are threatening to kill him right now.

I don't care if he wandered off in search of booze, a good time with one of the local women, or even if he was deserting and had some odd notion that he could wend his way home to Idaho or find Nirvana high on a mountain top.

The bad guys in this story are the Taliban. Bergdahl is the good guy. A flawed protagonist? Maybe. Like Clint Eastwood in insert-name-of-all-Clint-Eastwood-movies-here. But the protagonist nonetheless.

We're rooting for you Bowe Bergdahl. You and your family are in our prayers.

RIP: Shifty Powers

For those of you who are fans of Band of Brothers I'm sad to pass on the news that Shifty Powers of the heroic Easy Company, 2-506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division, died on June 17th.

Blackfive has some info on the passing of Powers and his life story, including this:

Shifty Powers received two Bronze Stars and a CIB and fought in every campaign that Easy Company was in. He was severely injured on his way home in a truck accident (the irony is that the men of Easy rigged the lottery to go home so Shifty would be first, but he ended up being one of the last to get home after an extensive hospitalization).

Video: Pvt. Bowe Bergdahl Full Hostage Video

Here is the entire video showing Private Bowe Berdahl in Taliban captivity. The Taliban have threatened to murder him if the U.S. does not leave Afghanistan.

Until Bowe Bergdahl's captors are dead I will not rest. For those who speak of coming to some sort of agreement with the Taliban I would remind you of the kind of scum we are talking about.

I wasn't planning on coming back to the blog for a few days in order to sort my personal affairs out after a prolonged vacation went very very bad. To be honest I was questioning whether or not I would come back at all.

But it's as if I've been awakened from a slumber and I can't recall why I ever went to sleep. This video reminds me why I began to blog in the first place. I want these Taliban dead. Killed. Annihilated.

I'm back, and I declare war on the Taliban.

UPDATE: Since I haven't been back in so long, I had no idea who was covering this. Flopping Aces links a pretty good article on the violation of international law that this represents. I'll send you over there to read it.

The major issue to me isn't interntaional law -- only inasmuch as it reveals the hypocrisy of the far Left who constantly cite all of our minor infractions in an effort to equivocate between America and her enemies like the Taliban -- the major issue is that an American is being held hostage by America's enemies.

I want our hostages freed and our enemies killed. This is what patriots think. If that is not on your mind then, yes, I question your patriotism.

UK Bomb Plotter Sentenced

Isa Ibrahim.jpg(Bristol, England) A 20-year-old radical Muslim, Isa Ibrahim, was sentenced to prison this week after being convicted of plotting a suicide attack on a Bristol shopping center.

Police were alerted to the plot by a member of the Al-Baseera mosque after Ibrahim boasted of his plans. Police then raided Ibrahim's apartment and found that he was in the process of packing home-made explosives in a suicide vest.

The jury convicted Ibrahim, a former pupil of Downside School, near Bath, by majority of making an explosive. He was also found guilty of preparing terrorist acts.

Ibrahim was given an indeterminate sentence and told by the judge, Mr Justice Butterfield, he should serve a minimum of 10 years. "You were, in my judgment, a lonely and angry young person at the time of these events, with a craving for attention," the judge said.

Being lonely and angry is merely part of his problem. Reportedly, Ibrahim also had a drug-addled mind.
He started on cannabis at a young age, and became lazy with school work. So he got in trouble with his teachers – and maybe his parents – which led to a resentment of figures of authority. The drug habits worsened, and he became addicted to heroin and cocaine.

Eventually, radical Islam offered Ibrahim a way out. It gave him a sense of identity. It granted him a feeling of imagined acceptance in a community of outcasts. It even helped him to overcome his drug addiction.

So, at least anecdotally, it's claimed that radical Islam cures drug addiction. Forget the rehab clinic, my friend, just put on this vest. Helluva choice, eh? (Orig. for links)

Via Investors Business Daily: Congress: It didn't take long to run into an "uh-oh" moment when reading the House's "health care for all Americans" bill. Right there on Page 16 is a provision making individual private medical insurance illegal.

When we first saw the paragraph Tuesday, just after the 1,018-page document was released, we thought we surely must be misreading it. So we sought help from the House Ways and Means Committee.

It turns out we were right: The provision would indeed outlaw individual private coverage. Under the Orwellian header of "Protecting The Choice To Keep Current Coverage," the "Limitation On New Enrollment" section of the bill clearly states:

"Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day" of the year the legislation becomes law.

The Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center in Minneapolis keeps popping up in the investigation of the missing Somali men who went to wage jihad in Somalia.

Sheik Abdirahman Ahmed of the Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center, the largest mosque in Minneapolis, was placed on the national no-fly list back in 2008. Even members of the Somali community have accused the imam and mosque of brainwashing these kids to go fight jihad in Somalia.

Prosecutors said in their court filing that it was only after he arrived in Somalia that Isse learned he was brought there to work with al-Shabaab, an Islamic terrorist group.

"He always wanted to visit his grandmother in Somalia, but he was broke, so when they offered him cash and a passport, he took it," Jamal said. But after arriving in Somalia, Isse realized he was being closely watched and cooperated with the group until he could escape several weeks later, Jamal said.

Prosecutors said Isse spent "one to two weeks at the training camp" and then decided to leave with another person from Minnesota. Isse then visited family members in Somalia before returning to the U.S. in May 2008, their filing said. It appeared Isse had left the camp before the State Department in March designated al-Shabaab a foreign terrorist organization, it said.

Jakarta Hotels Bombed

(Jakarta, Indonesia) Near-simultaneous bombs detonated at the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott Hotels around 8AM Friday morning. Suicide bombers of the Muslim fundamentalist Jemaah Islamiyah are suspected but not confirmed.

One source reports four dead at the Marriott and four dead at the Ritz. AP reports nine dead and 50 injured.

The head of the Health Ministry crisis centre, Rustam Pakaya, said at least two people were seriously injured, including one New Zealander.

Debris and shattered glass littered the street outside the neighbouring hotels, which are in an upscale Jakarta neighbourhood, and ambulances raced to the scene.

The casualty count is expected to rise.

[Update 0700 EDT, 7/17/09] After the hotel blasts, a car bomb exploded on a toll road in north Jakarta, killing two people. It's not known if the blast was related to the hotel bombs.

Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists are still suspected as the perpetrators. In particular, the name of Jemaah Islamiyah bomb-maker Noordin Top has been mentioned.

Investigators allegedly found another bomb in one of the hotels that didn't explode.

Since the Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton are among the most secure places in central Jakarta, there is speculation that the bombers checked-in as visitors at the hotels. No terrorist group has claimed responsibility as yet.

Sixteen foreigners are reportedly being treated for injuries at local hospitals.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono suggested that the bombings are attempts to destabilize the government and terrorists have made him a target. The bombings came only a week after Yudhoyono was re-elected.

British soccer team, Manchester United, has canceled its visit to Indonesia amid the chaotic aftermath of the bombings. The team is currently in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Indonesian stocks have taken a dip due to uncertainty.

Gates and Tubs - Hurricane Killers

Bill Gates.jpgTired of weeding bytes in the keyboard colony, Bill Gates is using some of his Microsoft millions to fight hurricanes.

The scheme Gates is promoting consists of giant tubs (pic) in the ocean with two tubes descending to the depths. One tube "drains" warm water from the surface and the second tube sucks cooler water from the depths.

Microsoft founder Gates and a dozen other scientists and engineers have a patent pending for deploying such vessels, which they say would collect water through waves breaking over the walls of the tub. Some variations have the water moving through turbines on their way down, which would in turn generate electricity to suck up the cooler water.

As many as 200 vessels could be placed strategically in the predicted path of a hurricane, and they could be designed to be reused or to sink in place and decompose underwater. The vessels could be moved into place by towing or by dropping from airplanes.

A second patent application describes how part or all of the cost of building and maintaining the hurricane-killer ships could be raised by selling insurance to coastal residents whose risk would be reduced by using the new system.

So, the idea is to work fast to put out a bunch of tubs in the ocean when a hurricane is coming and then the storm is supposed to fizzle out. Good luck with the scheme, Bill. I'm skeptical.

In any event, I wonder if a correlation exists between winning the Nobel Prize and trying to control the weather. Both Al Gore and Bill Gates are giving it a shot. Unfortunately, nature is a mother. I predict both will fail.

Report: Swiss Paid Al-Qaeda Millions for Hostage

(Algiers, Algeria) Sources report that Switzerland paid millions of euros to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb for the release of the Swiss hostage, Werner Greiner.

According to Liberté, quoting informant sources, a Malian intermediary was to have delivered the 5 million euros to the terrorist group.

According to the Arab language newspaper El Khabar, the sum was set at 3 million, and arrived in northern Niger with a Tuareg intermediary.

Yesterday and official (sic) from the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Markus Boerlin, stated that "Switzerland did not negotiate with the kidnappers or pay the ransom".

So there you go. Readers have a variety of stories to believe. I lean toward thinking that a ransom of some amount was paid but not as much as reported.

It's noteworthy that Greiner was kidnapped in January along with Brit citizen Edwyn Dyer who was killed, reportedly due to London's refusal to pay a ransom.

(Sevastopol, Ukraine) Strangely, a biker club called the Night Wolves expelled a member because he rode his motorcycle with a topless girl riding in the back. Apparently, motorcycle clubs in Russia and Ukraine are affiliated with the church and it's taboo to have a topless girl with you on your bike.

The Hells Angels, Mongols and other American biker clubs are not believed to have similar restrictions.

Al Qaida paranoid of Predator Drone Attacks

For good reason too. Since the start of the year approximately 16 Predator Drone strikes have killed around 268 terrorists in Pakistan's North Western region where the taliban and al Qaida are holed up. So far in July over 70 terrorists have been killed by Predator Drones.

The latest Predator Drone strike possibly tagged a taliban leader and a Predator Drone attack in June just missed Baitullah Mehsud by hours.

Just the sound or sight of the Predator Drones causes panic. So much so that al Qaida terrorists have violently turned on one another out of confusion and mistrust.

Officials in Hamburg were reportedly unhappy at having a character with the same name as Sacha Baron Cohen's Nazi-praising Austrian journalist Bruno.

They also wanted something that would not offend the Muslim community, and so chose the Turkish name Aydan.

Interestingly, the book teaches about politics and democracy which, ironically, probably also offends the Muslims.

China Stalls Reporters on Uighur Conflict

(Xinjiang Province, China) Here's an interesting note regarding the suppression of the press by the Chinese government during the recent bloody riots between the Uighurs and the Hans.

During the past week, at least five foreign reporters were detained by the authorities. These were two Associated Press reporters, one South China Morning Post report, one Spanish newspaper reporter and one Japanese reporter.

These reporters attempted to interview Uighurs who were afraid of being arrested or attacked violently. As of yesterday, the authorities are asking the reporter to re-register themselves. Those without permits will be forbidden to gather news; those who are approved will be accompanied by official workers.

Obviously, one is encouraged to be skeptical of any official news coming out of China.

Latest Hamas Konspiracy: Israel dumping aphrodisiac gum on Gaza

GAZA CITY (AFP) — Hamas suspects that Israeli intelligence services are supplying its Gaza Strip stronghold with chewing gum that boosts the sex drive in order to "corrupt the young," an official said on Tuesday.

"We have discovered two types of stimulants that were introduced into the Gaza Strip from Israeli border crossings," Hamas police spokesman Islam Shahwan told AFP.

"The first type is presented in the form of chewing gum and the second in the form of drops," he said.[...]

"The intelligence services are aiming to corrupt the young generation by distributing these products among students."

The story came to light after a Palestinian man filed a complaint that his daughter had experienced "dubious side effects" after chewing the offending gum, Israeli media reported.

"Youths" riot in Firminy France

French youths set 317 cars on fire and wounded 13 police officers overnight during a series of riots on the eve of the Bastille Day holiday, police say.

Paris police said 240 people had been arrested, almost double the number held after unrest on the same day last year.

The injured officers are suffering from hearing difficulties caused by home-made explosives blowing up beside them.

Last week, the death of a young man in police custody caused three nights of riots in the southern town of Firminy.

Police said Mohamed Benmouna, a 21-year-old of Algerian origin, had died after trying to hang himself in a cell earlier in the week.

EU Considers "Further Action" Against Iran

(Brussels, Belgium) With the EU presidency rotating to Sweden, there's a new sheriff in town and, boy, he is angry.

Ambassadors from three European Union member states on July 7 visited the Iranian Foreign Ministry to call for the “immediate release” of a British embassy employee, a Swedish EU presidency statement said.

The EU was considering “further action” if the Iranian authorities did not release the employee, one of several British embassy workers arrested following controversial presidential elections in Iran.

"Considering further action" is a diplomatic code phrase which presumably dispatches a team of EU scholars to the university library in search of adjectives and verbs with stronger tsk-tsk effects.

Ironically, in a followup statement, the EU used the word "condemned" in protesting the arrest of French teacher Clotilde Reiss. Evidently the EU means business and the Iranians should prepare for a fresh set words being voiced against them.

Minneapolis man killed in Somalia fighting for al Qaida linked al Shabaab

jamalBana.jpgA Minneapolis man, Jamal Bana, a 20 year old who went to Somalia to wage jihad with al Shabaab was killed by government forces this past weekend. The man's mother learned of her son's death while browsing through Terror Free Somalia which had posted the story along with pictures released by the Somali government. Star Tribune

A third Minneapolis Somali man has been killed in his homeland, community leaders said Saturday, his family having learned his fate by stumbling onto a website that contained photos of his bloody corpse.

While the body was identified only as that of a "foreign jihadist" or "fighter," a closeup of the face left Jamal Bana's mother with no doubt. The young man had been shot through the temple.[...]

Abdirizak Bihi, a community activist who visited with Bana's mother at her south Minneapolis home Saturday, said that Bana's family learned of his death early Saturday while searching the web for news on the fighting in Mogadishu.

KABUL, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Some 70 Taliban insurgents have been killed since the military offensive launched in Helmand province, south of Afghanistan, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said Sunday.

"Since the beginning of the operation on July 2, so far 70 rebels have been killed and several others sustained injuries," Azimi told a news conference here.

Involving nearly 5,000 Afghan and U.S. Marines, the offensive was dubbed "Khanjar" which means "Strike of Sword" with the objective to restore the government's control in Taliban-held territories and so far, Khanshin district has been regained.

Iran To Execute 12 Sunni Muslims

(Tehran, Iran) Iranian authorities have scheduled executions this week of 12 Sunni Muslims belonging to the Jundallah (Soldiers of God) rebel group, including a senior leader of the rebels, Abdolhamid Rigi.

Jundallah militants are accused of regularly launching attacks against the Shiite government in the southeast province of Sistan-Baluchestan, bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan.

According to Hojateslam Ebrahim Hamidi, head of the Sistan-Baluchestan Judiciary, the 12 Jundallah members have been accused of being "mohareb" -- enemies of God. “They will be hanged, inshallah, by the end of the week,” said Hamidi.

Concurrently, the Fars news agency reports allegations of U.S. forces providing funds and collaborating with Jundallah in recruiting, training, infiltrating Iran and in methods of inflaming Sunni-Shiite sectarianism.

Oddly, the news comes despite the fact that Jundallah is historically linked to the Taliban and al-Qaeda and a recent report indicates that the Pakistani Taliban plans to join forces with Jundallah.

Frankly, skepticism is probably warranted regarding the U.S. collaborating with Jundallah.

Seven Beheaded in Somalia

Islamist Al-Shabaab continues to deny that it is a terrorist group despite actions to the contrary. From GaroweOnline:

Somali Islamist fighters on Friday beheaded seven prisoners accused of abandoning the Muslim faith and spying for the government in the largest mass execution since the Islamists were pushed from power two and a half years ago.

The public killings in the southwestern town of Baidoa followed weeks of fierce fighting as the Islamists try to seize Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, amid mounting concerns about the influx of hundreds of foreign fighters to the failed state.

The beheadings may be linked to the Islamists' failure to take Mogadishu after a 2-month-old offensive, said a senior analyst at global intelligence company Stratfor.

Al-Shabaab has still not decisively captured Mogadishu. Government and African Union peacekeepers remain in control of several key government buildings plus the port and airport.

Interestingly, it appears that abandoning the Muslim faith is a more serious offense than spying.

Apparently the episode so disturbed Bakri that he ordered his 15-year-old daughter Raya to cover up from head-to-toe. The instruction was sent long-distance since Bakri lives in exile in Lebanon after being booted out of England.

In the latest news, daughter Raya has disobeyed her father while also violating the strict Muslim code. Raya posted a picture of herself on Facebook in which she wears no hijab, no niqab and no burqa. Her face and arms are exposed.

A source close to the family said last night: "Raya's pictures on Facebook will make her father explode with rage.

"He's already been mortified by pictures of Yasmin half-naked."

Since Bakri praised the 9/11 killers and blamed the 7/7 London bombings on the government, one can only guess what he would do to his daughters -- if he could get to them.

In conclusion, Omar Bakri is experiencing rage, embarrassment and humiliation due to the behavior of his daughters. I, on the other hand, am feeling schadenfreude, delighted with the suffering of Omar Bakri. I know it's un-Christian but I can't seem to help myself.

Canadian sentenced for supporting al Qaida

Warsame, a naturalized Canadian citizen of Somali descent who lived in Minneapolis, was sentenced to 7 years in prison and three years of supervised release. Warsame was convicted on one count of conspiring to provide material support and resources to al Qaida. Back in May Warsame plead guilty to providing material support and resources to al Qaida and in exchange the Feds dropped three counts of making false statements to the FBI.

Iran Jails French Woman for Espionage

(Tehran, Iran) A French woman, Clotilde Reiss, 23, was arrested last week by Iranian police for alleged espionage. Reiss (pic) has been jailed in the notorious Evin prison.

Reiss was a teaching assistant at the University of Isfahan for several months and was detained at the airport as she was preparing to leave the country.

Iranian authorities claim that Reiss took part in the recent election protests and sent an email to a friend in Tehran that contained protest rally information. Sources say Reiss isn't political and she only took pictures of the demonstrations while not participating. Her emails have been portrayed as completely innocent.

The French Foreign Ministry has said the charge of espionage is "absolutely baseless" and demanded that Reiss be released. President Sarkozy also demanded her immediate release in a strongly-worded statement.

"Death to the Dictator" Protests in Iran

(Tehran) Despite government crackdowns leading to the arrests of activists, journalists, bloggers and opposition leaders, thousands of protesters chanted "death to the dictator" as they "streamed down the avenues of the capital" yesterday. Official reports indicate that 1,000 to 2,500 people have been arrested since the election, including a former vice-president and former cabinet members.

Witnesses said the protesters were assaulted by security forces firing tear gas and wielding batons.

Turning garbage bins into burning barricades and darting through choking clouds of tear gas, the opposition made its first foray into the streets in nearly two weeks in an attempt to revive mass demonstrations that were crushed in Iran’s postelection turmoil.

Iranian authorities had promised tough action to prevent the marches, which supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi have been planning for days through the Internet. Heavy police forces deployed at key points in the city ahead of the marches, and Tehran’s governor vowed to “smash” anyone who heeded the demonstration calls.

In some places, police struck hard. Security forces chased after protesters, beating them with clubs on Valiasr Street, Tehran’s biggest north-south avenue, witnesses said.

Women in headscarves and young men dashed away, rubbing their eyes in pain as police fired tear gas, in footage aired on state-run Press TV.

Predictably, Iranian authorities blame the protest on enemy nations and "counterrevolutionary networks" attempting to thwart the Ayatollah-certified election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Laboratory Sperm Created

(Newcastle, England) For the first time, human sperm has been created in a laboratory. It's being called a major scientific breakthrough.

Researchers at the Northeast England Stem Cell Institute, who made the breakthrough using cells from an embryo, said that with some minor changes, the sperm could theoretically fertilise an egg to create a child.
Frankly, I don't know what the big deal is. I've got a whole sack full of scientific breakthroughs which I've been making for virtually my entire life and none have needed "minor changes" to fertilize an egg.

US kills 25 Taliban in second Predator strike in South Waziristan

Bill Roggio is reporting a drone attack today on a covoy in Taliban controlled tribal area this one trying to take out a High Value Target.

The US was "gunning for a HVT [high value target]," or a senior al Qaeda or Taliban leader, a US intelligence official told The Long War Journal. "We believe there were some foreign al Qaeda fighters in that convoy."

The attack on the convoy was the second today, and the third in 24 hours. Earlier today, eight Taliban fighters were killed when Predators fired six Hellfire missiles on a Taliban training camp in Karwan Manza. The camp is run by Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud.

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – U.S. Marines trapped Taliban fighters in a residential compound and persuaded the insurgents to allow women and children to leave. The troops then moved in — only to discover that the militants had slipped out, dressed in women's burqa robes.[...]

On Monday, images from a Predator drone showed a dozen fighters and at least 15 to 20 civilians inside a mud-brick compound in the village of Khan Neshin, about 60 miles north of the Pakistani border.

Because of the civilians, the U.S. troops held their fire, and instead used a military translator and village elder to persuade the militants to free women and children.

Two groups — children and what appeared to be women in burqas — left the compound. When the Marines entered, they found no one. The fighters had clearly donned burqas and slipped away among the civilians, according to Marines who took part in the mission.

The Americans didn't have female Marines with them to search the robed figures and make sure no men were among them in disguise. And the new U.S. and NATO commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, has said he would rather see militants escape than for civilians to be harmed in battle; a declassified version of his new guidelines for troops were released Monday.

Note to Gen. Stanley McChrystal: you don't have to kill civilians to check if the taliban are hiding under the burqas of their women. It would be enough to screw the gender rule and allow the Marines to carry out their job.

Must Read: Cap and Trade POS and Your House

Seriously I wasn't going to blog today, but this just has to be read and read now.

Let me introduce you to a little section of the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill called the "Building Energy Performance Labeling Program". It's section 304 of the bill and it says, basically, that your house belongs to the state. See, the Federal Government really wants a country full of energy-efficient homes, so much so that the bill mandates that new homes be 30 percent more energy efficient than the current building code on the very day the law is signed. That efficiency goes up to 50 percent by 2014 and only goes higher from there, all the way to 2030. That, by the way, is not merely a target but a requirement of the law. New homes must reach those efficiency targets no matter what.

"Headscarf Martyr" Marwa Sherbini Incites Muslim World

(Dresden, Germany) This story out of Germany is creating shock waves throughout the Muslim world while the Western mainstream media are slowly catching up.

Marwa-El-Sherbini.jpgIn the summer of 2008, a 32-year-old pharmacist and native Egyptian, Marwa el-Sherbini, was insulted by an unemployed worker from Russia, 28-year-old Alex W. (aka Alex A.) for wearing the hijab. He had screamed that Sherbini was a terrorist and an Islamist whore.

In November 2008, Alex W. was found guilty of insulting and abusing Sherbini and consequently assessed a fine. Alex W. appealed the verdict.

Last week, while the case was being heard on appeal, Sherbini, now pregnant, and her husband, Elvi Ali Okaz, appeared in the Dresden court along with Alex W.

While Sherbini was testifying about the incident of insult and abuse in the summer of 2008, Alex W. walked across the courtroom and plunged a knife into her 18 times. As Mr. Okaz ran to save his wife, he was shot by a police officer who mistook him for the assailant. Sherbini died and Okaz is currently under intensive care at a Dresden hospital.

The death is being blamed on anti-Muslim hatred with outrage echoing across the Muslim world. The situation is being compared to the turmoil created by the publication of the Mohammad cartoons. Expect more on this story.

Imperial Good News: Abu Izzadeen Goes Back to Jail

The radical Islamic preacher Abu Izzadeen has been recalled to jail after breaking the terms of his release, prison sources said today.

Izzadeen, who is otherwise known as Trevor Brooks, was jailed last year for four and a half years for inciting terrorism but released in May this year after his sentence was cut on appeal.

...He was recalled after he swore at police officers who were checking that he was keeping to the terms set out when he was freed, the Sun newspaper reported.

Oh my, we just love that one.

This calls for a special imperial celebration.

Released Gitmo detainee leading taliban in Helmand province

Mullah Zakir, aka Abdul Qayum Zakir, also known as Abdullah Ghulam Rasoul, was a senior fighter for the taliban in the 90s and surrendered to US forces in 2001. He was transferred to Gitmo in 2006, transferred to Afghan custody in 2007 and released in 2008.

Now Zakir is the taliban commander in the Helmand province where our Marines just launched the much publicized offensive. More info at RoA

Victims' Memorial - July 7th Terror Attack on London (sticky)

(London, England) A £1m memorial to the victims of the July 7th 2005 terror attack on London will be unveiled today in Hyde Park.
Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall will join senior MPs, survivors and family members of the victims for the ceremony which takes place on the fourth anniversary of the terror attacks.

The Prince of Wales is expected to speak at the event, before laying a wreath and meeting bereaved families.

Sir Trevor Mcdonald has been invited to the unveiling, where he will read out the names of the victims before a minute's silence.

Each of the 52 victims is represented by a three metre high pillar, with the pillars arranged in four groups which represent the locations of the bombings.

A plaque with the victims' names has also been placed in the grass banks at the eastern end of the memorial.

The four bombings by Islamist terrorists occurred at Tavistock Square, Edgware Road, King's Cross and Aldgate.

Although it scarcely needs mentioning, many Americans share the pain of Britain's loss. And, for what it's worth, I'm just as sickened and outraged now as I was four years ago. Never forget.

PETA and Pig Excrement

(Columbus, Ohio) The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has requested permission to put 3,500 gallons of pig excrement and urine on the Ohio Statehouse steps accompanied with a fan to disseminate the smell.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board denied permission. PETA responded by sending a letter to the Statehouse Executive Director asking for a review of the denial.

The reported purpose of PETA's excrement project is to support its contention that pig farms produce swine flu and other diseases. No information has been reported on where PETA gets its 10+ tons of pig excrement.

In any event, there seems to be a bit of karmic justice playing out. Think about it. A group of PETA's more fanatical followers is forced to spend quality time being up close and neighborly to 3,500 gallons of pig excrement in the middle of summer. Like peas and carrots, eh?

Somali pirates smuggling al Qaida terrorists into Somalia

Al Shabaab is using Somali pirates in order to ferry in al Qaida terrorists into Somalia. But of course the Somali pirates are just volunteers who are protecting the environmental integrity of the coast of Somalia. Nothing to do with jihad and islam. Telegraph

The Taliban-style Shabab group , which has already siezed control of much of the lawless nation, has enlisted the pirates' services to smuggle in al-Qaeda fighters from across the Middle East, according to Somali government ministers. They claim that up to 1,000 have arrived in recent months, swelling the ranks of the Shabab in its bid to topple the fragile US-backed administration in Mogadishu.

The warning was issued by Somali's first deputy prime minister, Professor Abdulrahman Adan Ibrahim, during a visit to London last week. He is lobbying for Britain and other Western countries to give more financial help to stamp out the piracy problem along the country's vast 2,000 mile coastline.

"The Shabab are requesting the pirates to bring people in for them," Prof Ibrahim told The Sunday Telegraph. "Somalia's borders with neighbouring countries are now tightly policed, so the only corridor for them is via the sea. The pirates smuggle them, and if anybody stops them, they just say they are passing fishermen."

Laughing in Public Illegal in Gaza

(Gaza Strip) Out of fear of being tagged as fundamentalist, the Hamas government doesn't acknowledge the existence of the virtue and vice security force but the citizens know it exists.

A Palestinian female journalist complained over the weekend that Hamas policemen attempted to arrest her under the pretext that she came to a Gaza beach dressed immodestly and was seen laughing in public.

The journalist, Asma al-Ghul, said that the policemen instead confiscated her passport. Since the incident, she added, she has been afraid to leave her home, especially after receiving death threats from anonymous callers.

"They accused me of laughing loudly while swimming with my friend and failing to wear a hijab," Ghul told a human rights organization in the Gaza Strip. "They also wanted to know the identity of the people who were with me at the beach and whether they were relatives of mine."

In a phone interview with the Dubai-based Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya news Web site, the journalist said that the policemen who stopped her belonged to the Hamas government's Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice security force.

Reportedly in addition to banning laughing while swimming, the Hamas security force has also banned men from swimming topless. A Hamas spokesman said the security force operates "to prevent men from harassing women."

Most interesting to me in this report is that Hamas wants to hide the fact that Gaza is governed by radicals. Imagine that, extremists in government pretending to be rational.

America's Tea Party Drew Tens of Thousands to Southfork Ranch on Independence Day

The America's Tea Party event, held at Southfork Ranch in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, drew a crowd numbering in the tens of thousands. The event featured a full line up of speakers headlined by Michelle Malkin and Captain Scott O'Grady and also including a very funny stand-up routine by Stephen Crowder. The event also featured a full line-up of live music headlined by Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees.

Comedian Janeane Garofalo was also invited to attend, but didn't make it.

The event ran from 3 pm until midnight, climaxing in a huge fireworks extravaganza just before 10:00 pm. The event was livestreamed over the internet and has been viewed by nearly 500,000 people so far. (Baldwin, Wisconsin) Muslim activists called for removal of "Run Hadji Run" fireworks from store shelves because of "derogatory imagery."

On one side of the packaging for 'Run Hadji Run' fireworks (pic), men of Middle Eastern decent are riding on camels with a bomber plane flying above them.

On the other side is an angry-looking Uncle Sam yanking the beard of what looks like a Muslim man.

The fireworks were removed from the shelves.

Independence Day

It was a glorious morning. The sun was shining and the wind was from the southeast. Up especially early, a tall bony, redheaded young Virginian found time to buy a new thermometer, for which he paid three pounds, fifteen shillings. He also bought gloves for Martha, his wife, who has ill at home.

Thomas Jefferson arrived early at the statehouse. The temperature was 72.5 degrees and the horseflies weren't nearly so bad at that hour. It was a lovely room, very large, with gleaming white walls. The chairs were comfortable. Facing the single door were two brass fireplaces, but they would not be used today.

The moment the door was shut, and it was always kept locked, the room became an oven. The tall windows were shut, so that loud quarreling voices could not be heard by passersby. Small openings atop the windows allowed a slight stir of air, and also a large number of horseflies. Jefferson records that "the horseflies were dexterous in finding necks, and the silk of stocking was nothing to them." All discussion was punctuated by the slap of hands on necks.

On the wall at the back, facing the President's desk, was a panoply-consisting of a drum, swords, and banners seized from Fort Ticonderoga the previous year.

Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold had captured the place, shouting that they were taking it "in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress!"

Now Congress got to work, promptly taking up an emergency measure about which there was discussion but no dissention. "Resolved: That an application be made to the Committee of Safety of Pennsylvania for a supply of flints for the troops at New York."

Then Congress transformed itself into a committee of the whole. The Declaration of Independence was read aloud once more, and debate resumed. Though Jefferson was the best writer of all of them, he had been somewhat verbose. Congress hacked the excess away.

They did a good job, as a side-by-side comparison of the rough draft and the final text shows. They cut the phrase "by a self-assumed power." "Climb" was replaced by "must read," then "must" was eliminated, then the whole sentence, and soon the whole paragraph was cut.

Jefferson groaned as they continued what he later called "their depredations." "Inherent and inalienable rights" came out "certain unalienable rights," and to this day no one knows who suggested the elegant change.

A total of 86 alterations were made. Almost 500 words were eliminated, leaving 1,337. At last, after three days of wrangling, the document was put to a vote.

Here in this hall Patrick Henry had once thundered: " I am no longer a Virginian, Sir, but an American." But today the loud, sometimes bitter argument stilled, and without fanfare the vote was taken from north to south by colonies, as was the custom. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted.

There were no trumpets blown. No one stood on his chair and cheered. The afternoon was waning and Congress had no thought of delaying the full calendar of routine business on its hands. For several hours they worked on many other problems before adjourning for the day.

Much To Lose

What kind of men were the 56 signers who adopted the Declaration of Independence and who, by their signing, committed an act of treason against the crown? To each of you the names Franklin, Adams, Hancock, and Jefferson are almost as familiar as household words.

Most of us, however, know nothing of the other signers.

Who were they? What happened to them?

I imagine that many of you are somewhat surprised at the names not there: George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Patrick Henry. All were elsewhere.

Ben Franklin was the only really old man. Eighteen were under 40; three were in their 20s. Of the 56 almost half -24- were judges and lawyers. Eleven were merchants, 9 were landowners and farmers, and the remaining 12 were doctors, ministers, and politicians.

With only a few exceptions, such as Samuel Adams of Massachusetts, these were men of substantial property.

All but two had families. The vast majority were men of education and standing in their communities. They had economic security as few men had in the 18th century.

Each had more to lose from revolution than he had to gain by it. John Hancock, one of the richest men in America, already had a price of 500 pounds on his head.

He signed in enormous letters so "that his Majesty could now read his name without glasses and could now double the reward." Ben Franklin wryly noted: "Indeed we must all hang together, otherwise we shall most assuredly hang separately." Fat Benjamin Harrison of Virginia told tiny Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts: "With me it will all be over in a minute, but you , you will be dancing on air an hour after I am gone.

These men knew what they risked. The penalty for treason was death by hanging. And remember: a great British fleet was already at anchor in New York Harbor.

They were sober men. There were no dreamy-eyed intellectuals or draft card burners here. They were far from hot-eyed fanatics, yammering for an explosion.

They simply asked for the status quo. It was change they resisted. It was equality with the mother country they desired. It was taxation with representation they sought. They were all conservatives, yet they rebelled.

It was principle, not property, that had brought these men to Philadelphia. Two of them became presidents of the United States. Seven of them became state governors. One died in office as vice president of the United States. Several would go on to be U.S. Senators.

One, the richest man in America, in 1828 founded the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. One, a delegate from Philadelphia, was the only real poet, musician and philosopher of the signers (it was he, Francis Hopkinson - not Betsy Ross who designed the United States flag).

Richard Henry Lee, A delegate from Virginia, had introduced the resolution to adopt the Declaration of Independence in June of 1776. He was prophetic in his concluding remarks:

"Why then sir, why do we longer delay? Why still deliberate? Let this happy day give birth to an American Republic. Let her arise not to devastate and to conquer but to reestablish the reign of peace and law. The eyes of Europe are fixed upon us. She demands of us a living example of freedom that may exhibit a contrast in the felicity of the citizen to the ever increasing tyranny which desolates her polluted shores. She invites us to prepare an asylum where the unhappy may find solace, and the persecuted repost. If we are not this day wanting in our duty, the names of the American Legislatures of 1776 will be placed by posterity at the side of all of those whose memory has been and ever will be dear to virtuous men and good citizens."

Though the resolution was formally adopted July 4, it was not until July 8 that two of the states authorized their delegates to sign, and it was not until August 2, that the signers met at Philadelphia to actually put their names to the Declaration.

William Ellery, delegate from Rhode Island, was curious to see the signers' faces as they committed this supreme act of personal courage. He saw some men sign quickly, "but in no face was he able to discern real fear."

Stephan Hopkins, Ellery's colleague from Rhode Island, was a man past 60. As he signed with a shaking pen, he declared: "My hand trembles, but my heart does not."

"Most glorious service"

Even before the list was published, the British marked down every member of Congress suspected of having put his name to treason. All of them became the objects of vicious manhunts. Some were taken. Some, like Jefferson, had narrow escapes. All who had property or families near British strongholds suffered.

- Francis Lewis, New York delegate saw his home plundered and his estates in what is now Harlem, completely destroyed by British soldiers. Mrs. Lewis was captured and treated with great brutality. Though she was later exchanged for two British prisoners though the efforts of Congress she died from the effects of her abuse.

- William Floyd, another New York delegate, was able to escape with his wife and children across Long Island Sound to Connecticut, where they lived as refugees without income for seven years. When they came home they found a devastated ruin.

- Philips Livingstone had all his great holdings in New York confiscated and his family driven out of their home. Livingstone died in 1778 still working in Congress for the cause.

- Louis Morris, the fourth New York delegate, saw all his timber, crops, and livestock taken. For seven years he was barred from his home and family.

- John Hart of Trenton, New Jersey, risked his life to return home to see his dying wife. Hessian soldiers rode after him, and he escaped in the woods. While his wife lay on her deathbed, the soldiers ruined his farm and wrecked his homestead. Hart, 65, slept in caves and woods as he was hunted across the countryside. When at long last, emaciated by hardship, he was able to sneak home, he found his wife had already been buried, and his 13 children taken away. He never saw them again. He died a broken man in 1779, without ever finding his family.

- Dr. John Witherspoon, signer, was president of the College of New Jersey, later called Princeton. The British occupied the town of Princeton, and billeted troops in the college. They trampled and burned the finest college library in the country.

- Judge Richard Stockton, another New Jersey delegate signer, had rushed back to his estate in an effort to evacuate his wife and children. The family found refuge with friends, but a Tory sympathizer betrayed them. Judge Stockton was pulled from bed in the night and brutally beaten by the arresting soldiers. Thrown into a common jail, he was deliberately starved. Congress finally arranged for Stockton's parole, but his health was ruined. The judge was released as an invalid, when he could no longer harm the British cause. He returned home to find his estate looted and did not live to see the triumph of the revolution. His family was forced to live off charity.

- Robert Morris, merchant prince of Philadelphia, delegate and signer, met Washington's appeals and pleas for money year after year. He made and raised arms and provisions which made it possible for Washington to cross the Delaware at Trenton. In the process he lost 150 ships at sea, bleeding his own fortune and credit almost dry.

- George Clymer, Pennsylvania signer, escaped with his family from their home, but their property was completely destroyed by the British in the Germantown and Brandywine campaigns.

- Dr. Benjamin Rush, also from Pennsylvania, was forced to flee to Maryland. As a heroic surgeon with the army, Rush had several narrow escapes.

- John Martin, a Tory in his views previous to the debate, lived in a strongly loyalist area of Pennsylvania. When he came out for independence, most of his neighbors and even some of his relatives ostracized him. He was a sensitive and troubled man, and many believed this action killed him. When he died in 1777, his last words to his tormentors were: "Tell them that they will live to see the hour when they shall acknowledge it [the signing] to have been the most glorious service that I have ever rendered to my country."

- William Ellery, Rhode Island delegate, saw his property and home burned to the ground.

- Thomas Lynch, Jr., South Carolina delegate, had his health broken from privation and exposures while serving as a company commander in the military. His doctors ordered him to seek a cure in the West Indies and on the voyage he and his young bride were drowned at sea.

- Edward Rutledge, Arthur Middleton, and Thomas Heyward, Jr., the other three South Carolina signers, were taken by the British in the siege of Charleston. They were carried as prisoners of war to St. Augustine, Florida, where they were singled out for indignities. They were exchanged at the end of the war, the British in the meantime having completely devastated their large landholdings and estates.

- Thomas Nelson, signer of Virginia, was at the front in command of the Virginia military forces. With British General Charles Cornwallis in Yorktown, fire from 70 heavy American guns began to destroy Yorktown piece by piece. Lord Cornwallis and his staff moved their headquarters into Nelson's palatial home. While American cannonballs were making a shambles of the town, the house of Governor Nelson remained untouched. Nelson turned in rage to the American gunners and asked, "Why do you spare my home?" They replied, "Sir, out of respect to you." Nelson cried, "Give me the cannon!" and fired on his magnificent home himself, smashing it to bits. But Nelson's sacrifice was not quite over. He had raised $2 million for the Revolutionary cause by pledging his own estates. When the loans came due, a newer peacetime Congress refused to honor them, and Nelson's property was forfeited. He was never reimbursed. He died, impoverished, a few years later at the age of 50.

Lives, fortunes, honor

Of those 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, in each case with brutal treatment. Several lost wives, sons or entire families. One lost his 13 children. Two wives were brutally treated. All were at one time or another the victims of manhunts and driven from their homes.

Twelve signers had their homes completely burned.

Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one defected or went back on his pledged word. Their honor, and the nation they sacrificed so much to create is still intact.

And, finally, there is the New Jersey Signer, Abraham Clark.

He gave two sons to the officer corps in the Revolutionary Army. They were captured and sent to that infamous British prison hulk afloat in New York Harbor known as the hell ship "Jersey," where 11,000 American captives were to die. The younger Clarks were treated with a special brutality because of their father.

One was put in solitary and given no food. With the end almost in sight with the war almost won, no one could have blamed Abraham Clark for acceding to the British request when they offered him his sons' lives if he would recant and come out for the King and Parliament. The utter despair in this man's heart, the anguish in his very soul, must reach out to each and one of us down through 200 years with the answer: "No."

The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence proved by their every deed that they made no idle boast when they composed the most magnificent curtain line in history. "And for the support of this Declaration with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."

Sweden: Visit by spiritual leader of al-Shabaab

Xasaan Xuseen, the spiritual leader of al Shabaab, is scheduled to speak at the Bellevue Mosque in Sweden. Is this part of al Shabaab's recruitment of Somalis from the US, Candada, Britain and Scandinavia? Islam in Europe

The invitation of a man identified as the spiritual leader of al-Shabab by the Bellevue Mosque is disturbing many of Gothenburg's Swedish-Somalis. He brainwashes youth, says Yoonis Hassan.

Yoonis Hassan works as a supervisor at the Gothenburg tram. He is one of several Swedish-Somalis of varying ages who gathered in central Gothenburg to commemorate Somalian independence. Some of them regularly visit the mosque in Bellevue.

The youth in the room speak carefully about Xasaan Xuseen, who was invited to speak in a conference starting at the mosque today (Thursday). The older people have more to say: Yoonis Hassan says that he's calling Somalis home to wage war. People are concerned about this this, especially parents.

Most of those GP spoke with wanted to remain anonymous. Everybody is basically convinced that Xasaan Xuseen came to Gothenburg for two reasons: to collect money for al-Shabaab and recruit youth for the group's activities.

"He has supporters in Sweden," says Yoonis Hassan.

Widespread violence broke out in Mysore Thursday after somebody threw a dead pig into the compound of an under-construction mosque

Actually desecrating a real holy book, or someone's place of worship, not cool.

Iranian Police Torture & Rape Protestors

...His shoulder blades and arms were wounded. There were some slashes on the face. No bone fractures, but he was bruised all over the body. I wanted to take some photos but he did not let me. The doctor said only four of his teeth were intact, the rest were broken. You could hardly understand what he said.

Then the doctor told me what had happened. He had suffered rupture of the rectum and the doctor feared colonic bleeding. He suggested we take him to the hospital immediately.

Topless Babes Stall Construction Work

(Darwin, Australia) Called Watergape, a controversy has emerged regarding construction on the Darwin Waterfront Project.

Progress is being noticeably slowed by female European backpackers sunbathing topless and distracting the workers. Trade workers say the scantily-clad babes are purposefully distracting the men.

"They ask for it," one tradie told the Northern Territory News.

"They come and sit right in front of where the tradies are.

"They do it topless too - how do they get away with that?"

Darwin Waterfront development chief Pat Coleman was more critical and suggested that topless sunbathing should be banned.

However, a national topless women's group, Gotopless.org, has come to the defense of bare-chested ladies. Gotopless spokeswoman Veronique Chachay said, "Both men and women have nipples and both are natural, beautiful parts of the human anatomy." So there! (More)

Is Yemen Lying AGAIN?

Munir Mawari reviews the possible meanings of the divergence between Yemen and Saudi Arabia on the capture of "major financier" Saudi Hassan Alwan. Yemen says they captured him; the Saudis haven't heard anything yet.

Its quite a similiar situation to the seven Saudis that Yemen breathlessly reported captured in February. Tthe Saudis issued an official statement denying any knowledge. (See Oh, Seven Saudi Al Qaeda Weren't Captured in Yemen?) And it looks like they did it again:

Their often exaggerated or cosmetic claims of their anti-terrorist activities and victories are not as credible as claims made, for instance, by the Saudi authorities, who have a better history of credibility. The uncertainty surrounding the arrest of Alwan should cause any independent observer or analyst to have two hypotheses on the matter, each supported by evidence from openly available sources...

This Is What Liberal Media Bias Looks Like

Except in this case, it isn't just bias. It's activism.

They're acting as middlemen (while trying to wet their beaks in the process) between lobbyists (who Obama, their boy, pledged to have little or nothing to do with in his Administration) and the Administration itself, who they're in bed with.

When a doctor gives a lecture or presentation at a medical meeting, he has to list his disclosures and all relationships with industry in which he potentially stands to make money from the information he is presenting (standard conflict of interest law requires it).

I'm just wondering when members of the media will be disclosing their relationships with government officials, their political campaign contributions, and their votes in a consistent, open and forthcoming manner. Don't we have a right to know what the conflicts of interest of the self-appointed "fourth branch of government" are? Hence, when you donate money to Barack Obama or the Democrats, you are not allowed to cover their policies or their "beat," because you have a conflict of interest.

Minneapolis Somalis indicted for ties to al Qaida

At least three Somalis from the Minneapolis area have been indicted by a grand jury on terror related charges. The Somalis were recruited by al Shabaab, a terrorist organization with close ties to al Qaida.

One of the indicted is a man, 21 year old Abdifatah Ise, who went to Somalia to wage jihad with al Shabaab. Abdifatah Ise returned to the US earlier this year after fighting for al Shabaab but was arrested at the Seattle airport.Fox News

A federal grand jury has indicted a group of Somali-Americans on terror-related charges after more than 20 young men from the Minneapolis area were recruited to join an Al Qaeda-linked group in Somalia, according to two law enforcement sources.

The indictments have yet to be unsealed, but an announcement is expected in the next few weeks. One law enforcement source told FOX News the grand jury already has handed up indictments against at least three people.

Among those charged is a man from Minneapolis who went to war-torn Somalia and then, about four months ago, relocated to Seattle, according to the two sources and a leader in the Minneapolis Somali community. The man was then arrested in a Seattle airport and transferred to a jail in Minneapolis, where he is currently being detained, according to the law enforcement sources.

The law enforcement sources said the man, described as in his 20s, has been charged with providing material support to a terrorist group, in this case al-Shabaab, which has been warring with the moderate Somali government since 2006.

Bottled Health Care

bottle.jpg(Columbus, Ohio) One might liken government-run health care to bottled health care where lower-level bureaucrats, I'll call Smiths, control the cork. Smiths will decide when to cork the health care bottle, when to remove the cork and when to use the cork to throttle the flow of health care.

As an example, the city government Smiths decided to cork the health care bottle in Columbus for a full work-week. Everything is shut down. Go home.

Of course, there will be times when the Smiths throttle health care services due to limited resources. Typically, this is done by suspending certain medical functions and procedures for a defined period. Meanwhile, the public waits -- and waits.

Sadly, though, restricting health services and causing the public to wait has a significant downside. In Canada, while telling the patients to wait, the health care system also apologizes for their deaths - in the same computer-generated letter. At least the Canadian health care bureaucrats are efficient -- covering two equally-likely sets of circumstances with one piece of paper.

Fortunately, the Canadians have an alternative other than wait or die. They can travel to the United States for treatment. For now, that is.

Obama Stimulus Plan Saves or Creates 467,000 More Jobs

Oh, wait...did I say "saves or creates," as in, the imaginary voodoo number crunching the Obama Administration mistakes for "measuring job creation?"

Oops! I guess I did. In reality, which bears little resemblance to the utopian, unicorn-populated, sunshine-laden rainbow smiles of Obamaworld, we're down another 467,000 more jobs in June. The stimulus is working so well that government jobs are increasing as the private sector burns (adding to the cost of running the government, by the way, which will have to be paid for by...the private sector).

And now that it's officially OK to blame Obama (accoridng to WH press flack Gibby), we're allowed to attribute this to the failure of Obama's "economic" policies. All those other job losses? ENTIRELY BUSH. Only when the press flack for the WH decreed that Obama was now ready to bear responsibility was it OK to attribute any job losses occurring on the watch of the Democrat Congress and Obama to their 'economic stimulus' policies. Because he said so. Several days before the WH press flack decreed it OK to criticize Obama's economic policies, it was not acceptable to do so. Now? It's cool.

Way to go, Barry. You're doing a hell of a job. Remember when we (that is, those of us who didn't guzzle the Obama/Democrat kool aid for the last several years) said that the only thing you could HOPE! for during the Obama Administration was that you might have some CHANGE! left in your pocket once it's over?

How's all that HOPE AND CHANGE working out for everyone?

Soldier Captured

One US soldier has been captured by the Taliban in Eastern Afghanistan.

KABUL — Insurgents have captured an American soldier in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said Thursday.

Spokeswoman Capt. Elizabeth Mathias said the soldier went missing Tuesday.

"We are using all of our resources to find him and provide for his safe return," Mathias said.

Mathias did not provide details on the soldier, the location where he was captured or the circumstances.

I've looked around and bit and found no statement from the Taliban as of yet. Just the usual comments from Jihadi morons.

May God bless and protect this soldier and his family and may he be returned safely.

A Tale of Two Helens

Compare: Helen Thomas, in typical form, asking a routine rant question at to President Bush in July 2007 (just about two years ago).

Today: Helen getting miffed - the first time that Helen Thomas has acted like Helen Thomas during this Administration - at the notion that the Obama Administration is obsessed with controlling the media and manipulating the media to suit its political objectives.

What are they complaining about? These are their boys up there.

Maybe this is just muscle flexing by the old media, and this is their way of firing a warning shot across the bow of this power-hungry, young Administration. To me, when in reference to the Obama clan's attempts to control the news I hear Helen say things like"We've NEVER had that in the White House," that to me is a signal sent to Gibby and the Obama Administration (or at least it should to the attuned ear).

The subtext?

"Listen, you motherf*ckers. We made you, and we can just as easily break you. Don't forget who brought you to the dance, you miserable little twerps."

Yemen Post, Threatened by Govt for Reporting News, Doesn't Buckle

The Yemeni government has shut down seven independent Arabic language newspapers and established a new press court for trials of journalists. It is in essence bankrupting the free media in Yemen. Now the government is taking aim at the English language Yemen Post, warning the paper not to cooperate with international media- or else. This is the editor's reply.

Over the last two weeks, the Yemen Post received numerous threats from different sides due to its coverage of the foreigners that were kidnapped and killed. The Yemen Post was the main independent source for 90% of the international media. Its comments were even given priority over the government and what it announced.

Last week, meetings took place between the Yemen Post and leading figures of the government. In the meetings, The Yemen Post was firmly asked not to work with international media outlets and to limit itself to local media. Direct threats were given. The option on the table was to agree to cooperate with the government whether it was right or wrong in what they announce. In the end, the Yemen Post refused.

It is sad that these people don’t understand that the job of media is not covering what it is asked of it to cover, but to cover the truth.

Yemen has not yet understood the difference between independent and governmental media, and the Yemen Post has vowed to show everyone the difference.

What I clearly want to say is that the Yemen Post is doing what it was established to do, and that is lead Yemeni media, raise its standards, and through its sources throughout the country, be able to serve not only Yemen, but the international community with concrete information about what is really happening.

Even with the threats we are given, the Post will not soften its stance and will work to be the most trusted local and international news source in Yemen.

(Malmö, Sweden) Topless bathing has been made legal at public swimming pools in the city of Malmö. The city council capitulated to feminists' complaints of gender inequality regarding exposed breasts.

Feminists contend that male breasts are viewed without any sexual connotation and think it should be the same with female breasts. Frankly, feminists have nothing to fear. I've viewed topless feminists at protest events and sexual connotations were the furthest from my mind.

At The other McCain:

Just finished the Vanity Fair article by Todd Purdum (earlier comments: Part I, Part II, Part III) and discovered that Professor Glenn Reynolds had dubbed my recent blogging a "Palinpalooza." This would also include:

* My response to Ken "Wonkette" Layne;
* The related reply to Andrew Sullivan; and
* My examination of the obsessions of Dr. Andrew Sullivan, M.D., OB-GYN, chief obstetric resident at the Atlantic Monthly Memorial Hospital.

I was aghast when I read Sullivan's article today. It had to be the cheapest most self righteous load of crap he's ever written, and that says a lot.

I'm not sure what this obsession with Palin hate is on the left. It has to be driven be fear of her somehow. Rather than work on their messiah's issues, they spend their time obsessively bashing the Governor of Alaska?

I dunno, maybe one of the readers understands it?

Things That Worry Me

First of all you have to read Fausta's post on the removal of former Honduran president/aspiring neo-commie dictator Mel Zelaya here.

This is in direct violation of the country’s Constitution, which forbids the President from calling for changes to the Constitution. Articles 373 and 374 of the Honduran Constitution specifically state that ammendments to the Constitution be approved by 2/3 of the votes in Congress AND specifically forbid any President of the country from extending term limits. The Constitution also says these two articles can not be amended ...

OK, so to the what worries me part.

Just what does Mr. Obama have against term limits? I mean its obvious that Chaves has appointed himself President for life and Mel Zelaya was about to execute the same thing.

Does the president think that's a good thing? How would the President view extending his own term?

What would people say if George W Bush had began trying to extend his term seven months from the end of his last term, mmmm?

I think this is another time that Obama finds himself on the a side other than what America is supposed to stand for. You represent me Mr. Obama and no matter how much you love Hugo and neo-communism, you're hired to go out there and represent freedom. Not shill from some commie dictator wannabe.

The US constitution could be changed to allow unlimited terms for a President. 4 times this type of legislation was introduced while Bush was President.
Indeed that's what worries me, any more attempts to do that should go just where the rest went, nowhere.
