Terror-tied ISNA Official *finally* Fired from Job Teaching Troops, Faces Investigation
Remember Louay Safi, a a top official for the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) who was conducting classes at Ft. Hood on Islam to troops about to deploy to Afghanistan in the days following Nidal Hassan's act of terror? Well, military ties with Safi have finally been severed and an investigation into him has been opened:
Safi now faces a criminal inquiry by the military but has never been criminally charged. He denies wrongdoing. He also has described post-9/11 counterterrorism crackdowns as a "campaign against Islam."You say ISNA, I hear Muslim Brotherhood. We have much more on Safi's Islamist views here.
Safi, for his part claims he's not an extremist but a moderate Muslim. I believe him. Unfortunately being a moderate Muslim does not put one into the mainstream of modern secular thought. Most moderate Muslims in this country who really are moderate by the measuring stick of American values are liberals when compared to the likes of Safi. And it's why the term moderate is meaningless when applied to Muslims in the West.
It's not moderate Muslims vs. radicals. Nor is it about liberals vs. moderates. The real test is commitment to secularism: Muslims vs. Islamists. Islamists are our political enemies, even the moderate ones.
