Flight 253 Bombers Claims al-Qaeda in Yemen Links (Updated-Video Image of Abdulmutallab added)

alqaedafailflag2.jpgBBC:

A Nigerian reported to have links to al-Qaeda is being questioned after an attempted act of terrorism on a plane arriving in the US, officials say.

They say the 23-year-old man was trying to ignite an explosive device as the jet approached Detroit from Amsterdam.

He was overpowered by some of the 278 passengers and 11 crew. Reports say he burnt his leg. No-one else was hurt.

Police in the UK are conducting searches and inquiries into the man, believed to be a London student.

...The suspect's name (Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab) was in a database indicating "a significant terrorist connection" although it did not appear on a "no-fly" list, said Mr King.

Mr Abdulmutallab reportedly told investigators he had links to al-Qaeda and had received the explosives in Yemen.

Hmmm, I wonder how this man was already on a "database"? Internet maybe? I sure hope we don't find later that this joker had been identified on forums like the Ft. Hood shooter and was judged not to be a threat.

Yesterday I was rather dismissive of this moron's failure. After all he did fail.

But after reading The Beeb's description of the device it struck me.

Officials have described the device as a mixture of powder and liquid which failed to go off properly.
I received a copy of this video the other day. The 23rd to be exact. It was the subject of some chatter on a the boards talking about "Was it really safe to fly". No kidding.

If you click through and watch the video its clear there was a potential danger.

AN. EFFING. SERIOUS. ONE.

We can just be thankful that...

A. Mr Abdulmutallab is an idiot.

B. Baby Jesus was watching over us.

It seems to me to be likely that if the mixture had been allowed time to set propely the device may have worked and al-Qaeda would have been able to claim a large number of murders on Christmas.

Update II: Aaron was onto this three years ago

He has more here:

Discussion: I first observed discussion of binary explosives on the al-Firdaws forum in January of 2007. In light of recent events I will post here my archive:

Also CBS reports the explosive used was PETN via Free Republic.

The suspect in the attempted bombing of Northwest Flight 253 used a highly explosive substance called PETN, a law enforcement official told CBS News Saturday.

The explosives were carried in a soft plastic container - possibly a condom - though much of the packaging was destroyed in the fire, the official said.

Now it looks like this man's father warned US authorities about him months ago. AND NO ONE DID A FREAKING THING.
The terror suspect who tried to blow up a Detroit-bound plane is the son of a Nigerian banker who alerted U.S. authorities to his "extreme religious views" months ago, it was reported Saturday.

The father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, a former minister and chairman of First Bank in Nigeria, is shocked that his son was even was allowed to fly to the U.S., family members told the Nigerian newspaper This Day.

We're scraping by on the skin of our teeth here.

Must be Booshmchellibacon's fault.

Update III from The Old Man:

ABC News adds details regarding the explosives (80 grams of PETN plus a syringe of liquid badness) and this as well:

According to the authorities, Abdulmutallab says he made contact via the internet with a radical imam in Yemen who then connected him with al Qaeda leaders in a village north of the country's capital, Sanaa.

I'm sure there's a cruise missile laying around here somewhere with Anwar Awlaki's name on it...
