So it is an extremely big deal that NATO and Afghan troops announced today that they found 500,000 pounds of the stuff — along with 5,000 improvised bomb components — in a Kandahar compound.

The fertilizer, ammonium nitrate, is illegal in Afghanistan. “This find will undoubtedly save many lives,” NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Vician said in a statement.

He’s right; more than 70 percent of coalition casualties are now caused by improvised bombs.

Sweet haul.
