"America Serves", The New "Slaves"?
President elect Obama's new government website has a section titled "America Serves"
Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.A commenter at Gateway Pundit brought up an interesting question:
This is a direct violation of the 13th Amendment, I believe. It mentions specifically the abolition of "involuntary servitude"..WhereasI thought this guy was a "Constitutional Scholar"?
The Thirteen Amendment to the United States Constitution officially abolished and continues to prohibit slavery, and with limited exceptions, such as those convicted of a crime, prohibits involuntary servitude. It was adopted on December 6, 1865.
Under his plan, Obama has said [insert college] students would be required to "serve" in order to keep their scholarships.$4,000 tuition tax credits.
I realize the amendment was to abolish slavery but would requiring students to serve fall under "involuntary servitude"?
Nothing to see here, move along.
Update: Rusty disagrees with this in saying - "A lot of colleges have the some kind of community/civic service requirements for graduation. It is not servitude, just another federal mandate"
He is against it but my theory/question is "odd". Hey, I was just curious.
I guess I better go find a nekkid picture of a babe to appease him.
