Hurricane Gustav - West Bank Threat
According to Ivor van Heerden, coastal geologist at LSU's Louisiana Hurricane Center, large sections of the West Bank could see the surge flowing over parts of the yet-to-be-completed levee system.
Unfortunately, lower Jefferson Parish has some levees only five-foot high in sections which is substantially less than the 13 to 18 feet-high levees along Lake Ponchartrain.

Consequently, if there is a 12-foot storm surge as has been predicted, lower Jefferson Parish will be inundated with 12 feet of water. (more)
