RIP: Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Alexander Solzhenitsyn has died.

Perhaps the most complete account of the gulag system is Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago, but the enormity of the work makes it difficult reading. An easy afternoon read, and a better piece of literature, is his One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich which recounts the humanity of a single victim on a single day under the oppression of the gulag system.

As a young men returning from WWII Solzhenitsyn was sent to the gulag. His crime? He made a joke at Stalin's expense in a letter. Yes, really.

He will be missed. Thansk to Trollhammer.
