A reliable source has informed me that Condoleeza Rice has approved a new lexicon for State Department usage, absolutely forbidding the use of the terms "jihad" and "jihadist" by any State Department official.I'm not as outraged at this as you might presume. In fact, it doesn't bother me at all. The State Department is in charge of diplomacy. Diplomacy is the art of lying.
I expect the State Department to lie. I want them to lie.
My only concern is that that the institution itself might eventually believe the lie. I'm afraid that at the State Department, the lie often becomes conventional wisdom.
