Vice President Ron Paul??

In a stunning statement to The New York Times, Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain announced today the strong possibility he will choose Ron Paul as his running mate.

In his statement to the press, McCain said there was a short list of potential running mates, with Paul at the top of the list.

This has caused some consternation among more liberal elements in the Republican party, who find Paul's policies to be isolationist, however even these acknowledge the boost this will give to McCain's numbers (and war chest) for the general elections.

McCain also suggested Mitt Romney as a potential vice-presidential running mate, however bad blood still remains between McCain and Romney after a robust Republican primary campaign, and most Republican strategists do not believe this can be overcome.

In spite of Ron Paul's poor showing in the republican primaries, his grass-roots organization was wildly successful in their fund-raising efforts and in disseminating Paul's message through new media outlets, such as the YouTube, MySpace and an assortment of blogs.

It is believed that Paul's numbers, while statistically low, are sufficient to give a winning edge to a McCain-Paul ticket, and woo undecided voters from the democratic camp.
