Yemen Blocks Blogs

I have a tee shirt that says, "Ali Saleh is scared of a blog." And apparently he really is.

In a rather Stalinist reaction to growing civil unrest (a half million people demonstrated in South Yemen on Monday), Yemen blocked 1126 Yemeni blogs by blocking the hosting platform Matoob.

A variety of online newspapers and opinion sites were previously blocked. However the administrators of the Yemen specific news aggregator YemenPortal.org have devised a web-based SSL proxy for web sites in Yemen banned for social, political or religious reasons.

My article on internet censorship appeared at the Yemen Times earlier this month.
