Fallujah: Recruiting Iraqis to Fight Terrorism
Bill Ardolino's latest report from Fallujah is about police recruiting day.
Shortly after the U.S. freed Fallujah from its Taliban like "shura" government--which executed citizens for being too 'Western'--there were no police to keep civil order. Two years later nearly 700 police are in the city. That number continues to grow.
Each recruit joins to build a new Iraq at his own risk. The "mujahideen" will kill any person they can get their hands on who they even suspect works for the government. Their families are at risk, too.
When asked who the insurgents were and why they committed acts of violence, he offered two reasons: They want to control the economic levers of power — the police are paid too well — and Iraq’s neighbors were funneling money and resources into the country to destabilize the government.Don't miss out on the photos from recruiting day posted at Bill's blog.
