Iraqi's Reaction To Teh Speach
First off, let me say that I am sick of the term "surge" to the point of upchuck every time I see or hear it. It's like a few years ago when the media went ga-ga over the word "gravitas." Whatever happened to good old "reinforcements?"
I'm starting to feel like the Knights Who Say Nee! whenever they heard the word "it." "Oh no! He said it again! Now I've said it!"
Anyway...
Amir Taheri in the New York Post pens this:
"A sigh of relief!"So one resident of Haifa Street, in the heart of Baghdad's badlands, reacted to the new plan to secure the Iraqi capital with the help of thousands of additional American troops.
"Maybe the Americans aren't running away after all," said the resident, a Sunni Arab, over the phone moments after President Bush unveiled his new plan. "The message seems to be that the United States will remain committed as long as Bush is in the White House."
Some 70 percent of Baghdad's violence is concentrated in five neighborhoods, where both Shiites and Sunnis have been the targets of rival death squads for months. Other Baghdadis say the population of those areas will greet the American troops with sweets and flowers.
Of course, it will be some time before we see how this pans out. I certainly hope it does as Mr. Taheri describes. However, I don't expect the lovely folks at crAP, MargaReuterVille, or any other MSM outlet to report it that way. I foresee many "wedding parties" being exterminated in the coming months.
IF, and only IF, the reinforcements arrive with a change in the Rules of Engagement, that is.
In related news, not all Baghdadis are too enthused about the new influx of American forces.
Oh, and as an aside, could someone please tell me WTF "put 'em on the glass" means? I missed that in blogger class.
