Post 9-11 "Support" From Europe
Hitchens had a great piece several days back supporting the celebration of the 4th of July, and also noted something quite profound (as if that is a surprise):
“The last time everybody said they liked the United States (or said that they said they liked the United States) was just after Sept. 11, when the nation was panicked and traumatized and trying to count its dead. Well, no thanks. This is too high a price to be paid for being popular.”
It just seems interesting to me that the only time since this war was foisted upon us that the Europeans actually gave a damn about the United States was when we were reeling and in greiving mode after 9-11-01. That fake “support” quickly eroded once it became clear that the United States damn well wasn't going to take that lying down and was going to respond militarily from a position of strength and not perpetual victimhood.
Not terribly surprising, but it is interesting to note that the continent whose sorry hides we saved with hundreds of thousands of our own men won’t support us as we stand up to defend ourselves. If there is any bright side, it is that we now can see what decades of unmitigated anti-Western press and socialist political culture will do to the collective psyche and strength of the nation-state. Namely, to emasculate and destroy it.
