Tough decision, but the right one. (RETITLED AND UPDATED)
I posted about a hijacking in Colombia in September, here, though the link to the AP story is now expired.
It is an extremely violent society.
UPDATE: Which is pretty well irrelevant to this because the guy was a US citizen. Coming back from a mission trip to Ecuador.
This is tragic and I'm very sorry for his wife's loss. What an awful way to lose witness her husband's death, as she was unable to control him or make him calm down. But just as with another tragic mistake in England this summer, the policy is still the correct one. Here was a man running up and down the aisles claiming he had a bomb, and then he runs on to the jetway (toward the people in the boarding lounge at the other end) and reaches into his bag...
We have to shoot. We can't ignore those threats.
It was a very brave Air Marshal who tackled him. That guy was, as far as he knew, throwing himself on a grenade. I'm glad there are people in the air willing to take those risks for us.
